Group Activity - “I’m not a Math Person”
1. Select an envelope from the center of the table and in partners, work together to solve the problem.
2. Remember there may be more than one way to solve a problem.
3. Once you have completed your puzzle, use the blank template in the center of the table to create your own puzzle.
4. Now let’s reflect!

Where did it all begin?
➔ Math education to become more focused and coherent➔ Provide clarity and specificity rather than broad general
statements➔ Stresses student understanding of key ideas, but also by
continually returning to organizing principles such as place value and the laws of arithmetic to structure those ideas

Introducing the NJ Student Learning Standards
What are Standards?
Standards are the learning goals for what students should know and be able to do at each grade level.
● Teachers know what to teach● Parents know what children are expected to learn● School districts (and teachers) know what to assess
A teacher decides how best to teach students to achieve this goal.K. Scussa 2017
This is where we were...
Jamie had a bag of 24 jellybeans she wanted to share with her two friends. She shared the jellybeans equally. How many jellybeans did each person get?
24 / 3 = 8 8 jellybeans
Write a number model to show your answer.

This is where we are now...
Karen had a bag of jellybeans. She gave one-eighth of them to Jenny and then one-fourth of the remaining jellybeans to Jon. Karen had 21 jellybeans left in the bag.
Let’s work in groups to solve this problem.
How many jellybeans were originally in the bag?
How many different ways can be used to solve this problem?

Thank You For Coming!
In the past we assigned problem solving...now we are saying, we need to teach problem solving. We need to teach students to be thinkers.
