Keith’s Corner Unlock Keychain Leadership

Sharing Power with the Right People at the Right Time

In the book Growing Y oung, the first principle in engaging and helping young adults in church is displaying or promoting keychain leadership. The authors state, “Churches that grow young are brimming with staff, volunteers, and parents who demonstrate keychain leadership. Whoever holds the keys has the power to let people in or keep people out. Keys provide access to physical rooms, as well as to strategic meetings, significant decisions, and central roles or places of authority. The more power you have, the more keys you possess.” The keys the authors are referring mean capabilities, power, and access of leaders that carry the potential to empower young people. By keychain leaders, they mean pastoral and congregational leaders who are

* Acutely aware of the keys on their keychain; and * Intentional about entrusting and empowering all generations, including teenagers and emerging adults, with their own set of keys.

It’s important to remember when we got our first set of keys, whether it

was to a car, a house or apartment, a place of employment, etc. It’s also important to give young adults and teenagers access to keys at church.

Keychain leadership helps the church grow young. Whether we are

staff, a ministry volunteer, a member of a leadership team, or a parent, we have the ability to share our keys with young adults in need of access to ministry and decision making within the church.

No matter our role, here is what the authors want us to know: if we

are willing to entrust our keys to young people, they will trust us with their hearts, their energy, their creativity, and even their friends. Yes, it can sometimes seem like more work than it’s worth—but if you give them your access, you have the opportunity to touch a whole generation. …..continued to page 2

….continued from page 1 We need to remember who our keychain leaders were growing up

in the church. Who were the first ones to trust us and grant us access when we were young? Who mentored us and empowered us to serve and lead in the church? These are important questions as we seek to grow young as a congregation and to become keychain leaders who are connected to, identifying, and empowering young adults to become leaders in their own right within our church.

Grace and peace, Keith

Westwood Baptist Church

“Joining God in His Work” through missional living is the heart of who we are and what we are about at Westwood. Missional living is the ongoing process of ministering to the whole person by sharing the love of Jesus through both word and deed. It is about building relationships and meeting physical, tangible, emotional, and spiritual needs of people in our world in the name of Jesus. Throughout the year, Westwood offers mission education groups for children, youth, women and men. We also partner with a variety of local and national ministries and support them through finances, prayers, volunteers and other tangible resources.

We believe that every believer has been given spiritual gifts and natural talents that are to be shared and used for the growth of God’s kingdom. Westwood’s goal is to equip and encourage individuals to find their God-given passion and call to service and to live out that call by “Joining God in His Work.”
