New show of artwork on display at the Parma Public Library

The Parma Public Library welcomes back artist Len Ippolito for an all new show of paintings created in the past two years. His show in the Parma Public Li-brary Gallery will continue through the month of April.

Len’s professed love for painting in oils is evident in his work. He has brought ex-amples of his new limited pallet paintings in both gray scale and sepia tones. Len retains a deep respect for form as well as a soft backlit quality in his paintings that lend subject and place an ethereal quality.

Distanced since 2009 from his earlier career of teaching physics and technical instructing, Len is now enjoying an almost forgotten love that he had for drawing

and painting. He says that he is fortunate to have found several groups in Western Monroe County that offer him advice, training and encouragement. He mentions the Parma Public Library’s Passion for Paint program, the Stony Point Art Studio in Ogden and the Skoog Farm Workshop in Brockport.

Len’s show is the forty-sixth in a series of exhibitions hosted by the Parma Pub-lic Library featuring local area artists and photographers. For more information or to inquire about showing your work call Rosalind Lipomi, Adult Services Librarian at 585-392-8350 or visit us on the web at www.parmapubliclibrary.org

NEW!

“Raise a Glass for Reading” and help fund Holley’s summer reading programCommunity members will have the opportunity to

taste wines and meads, shop with local farmers and entrepreneurs, listen to music, have fun with friends

and support the Summer Reading Program at the annual “Raise a Glass for Reading” Wine Tasting and Farmers’ Market at the Community Free Library in Holley on Friday, April 24 from 7 to 9 p.m.

This sell-out annual event, held on the last Friday in April, provides funding for the library’s summer reading program for children. Because of the success of previous wine tastings, the Library has been able to double the number of programs offered to children throughout the summer, going from six to twelve. Each child who attends five or more programs and documents his/her summer reading will receive a free book. This year’s theme is “Every Hero Has a Story” and will incorporate everything from superheroes to everyday heroes.

The 2015 event welcomes the two new stops on the Niagara Wine Trail- the Salamaca Estate Winery (Albion) and the 810 Meadworks (Medina). Salamaca Estate Winery features a selection of traditional wines ranging from dry viniferas to sweet native varieties. 810 Meadworks will be offering a selection of meads (honey wines) fermented in 55-gallon drums.

Also being featured are the gold-medal winning Leonard Oakes Estate Winery (Medina) known for its Steampunk Cider as well as award-winning wines and The Victorianbourg Wine Estate (Burt) known for its chocolate wines, fruit wines and other varieties.

As a Farmers Market, this event will provide

attendees with the opportunity to try Kirby Farms venture into honey and herb products, as well as obtain hanging baskets, bedding plants, and seasonal produce from Penna Farms.

The event also provides a showcase for local entrepreneurs. Harry Beaver of Woodturnings by HNB will bring an assortment of handmade wooden bowls, while Sue Johnson of Susi’s Hot Sauce will offer tasting samples.

Guests will be able to listen to jazz, classical and Broadway music by Sound Foundations, featuring Wendy and Sean Williams, and their sons Brannon, Charlie and Owen.

Tickets are $15 each and can be purchased at the Community Free Library. For questions, contact Sandra Shaw, Library Director, at 585-638-6987.

The Brockport Central School District (BCSD) will again offer a grant-funded Universal Pre-Kindergarten (UPK) Program. The program, with a strong focus on early learning, will start in September and follow the school calendar. Children will attend school five days a week for two and one-half hours a day during morning or afternoon sessions. Since the grant requires a collaborative effort between BCSD and area childhood education agencies, some children will attend private schools in addition to the majority of students attending Brockport’s Ginther School. All sites will use the curriculum developed by the UPK Advisory Board and will be taught by a certified teacher.

To be eligible for the UPK program, children

must be four years old by December 1, 2015 and be a Brockport Central School District resident. Families are responsible for making their own transportation arrangements, as transportation is not part of the State Education Department grant.

Names for the available slots will be selected through a lottery process. If a child is not yet registered to receive pre-K related mailings, call the Registrar’s Office at 637-1857. The Lottery application due date has been extended to April 20. The lottery will be conducted on April 24.

Frequently Asked Questions about the program may be found on the District’s website at www.bcs1.org/upk. Call 637-1816 for additional information.
