MAYOR'SMUSINGS

by Mayor Debra Button

Spring at last! Although last winter wasn’t too bad (cer-tainly not as brutal as the one before), I’m sure we’ve all hadquite enough of that cycle of hot-cold, hot-cold that we wentthrough for awhile. I don’t want to jinx anything but I thinkwe can feel confident that the warmer weather is here to stay.

The arrival of spring means that it’s time for us to startgetting the city in shape for visitors and for all of us to enjoy.Earlier in May, we got this kicked off with Mayor’s SpringClean-Up Day. This event saw City Council and City Hallemployees helping to clean up the downtown area, doingchores such as picking garbage, sweeping sidewalks and pre-paring flower beds.

Of course, Spring Clean-Up Day was just a symbolic firststep. There’s no way we could clean up the whole city in oneday. The process of keeping our city attractive is ongoingand we all have a part to play.

The arrival of spring also means that we can start enjoyingall the natural beauty surrounding our city. On June 13, wewill be celebrating International Trails Day by holding abarbecue at River Park. In addition to the food, there willalso be entertainment provided by local dancers from LalitaMaya Belly Dancing, Marley's Dance Effex, The Dance Zoneand the Ukranian Dance Club. The festivities will run from1-3 p.m. and we would love to see everyone come out toenjoy the fun.

Looking further ahead into the summer, we look forwardthis year to unveiling the new Pioneer Woman statue. Aroundthe time that the Tommy Douglas statue was unveiled, somepeople around town noticed that we have very little – ifanything – to commemorate the many women who helpedbuild Weyburn. The problem was: to whom should we dedi-cate the statue? It is hard to come up with a single identifi-able historic figure. In pioneer times, the role of women wasso routinely ignored that we have few records of the namesof our female pioneers or their accomplishments.

For this reason, a volunteer committee came together withthe idea of building a statue to commemorate pioneer womenin general. I would like to thank long-time community vol-unteer Ross McMurtry for his vision and dedication in driv-ing this project forward as well as all the volunteer commit-tee members who worked so hard to raise money for it.

The City is proud to support the project by offering land forthe statue cite. We look forward to continuing to work with thevolunteer committee to bring the project to completion.

On a more serious note, there have been a number ofsafety concerns raised about the 5th and King Street area. This intersection, which is right on the way out of town, is inboth a high school and elementary school zone. The Cityand the police will be monitoring this area over the summerto establish effective speed limits that will help keep our chil-dren safe. I would like to ask the public for their coopera-tion with this monitoring project.

Speaking of safety, the warmer weather inspires us all todo more outdoor activities – camping, hiking, boating andso on. These all have many healthy benefits but they eachalso have a number of risks that should be kept in mind. You’ll hear this message many times over the summer but letme be the first to say – play safe!
