1 October 2015 What’s happening to Brighton Public Golf Course? Since the end of last summer Brighton Golf Club members have been questioning ‘What’s happening with the condition of the golf course?’. This question arises out of the difficulty experienced when driving up the centre of some of the fairways only to land in a dry or grassy divot. Landing in a bunker that hasn’t been raked or under a bush with low lying foliage represents playing a crook shot resulting in the obvious penalty - not so with the fairways. Surely a golfer that loves his sport and enjoys playing the game should expect to be rewarded when playing a good shot and is entitled to ask ‘What’s happening to the Brighton Golf Course?’ when his ball lands in an un-repaired divot or on a patch of ground devoid of grass. And of course they have every right to do so since the Golf Club is a Bayside City Council rate payer and every rate payer should raise questions when they become aware of the deteriorating condition of the community asset that we know so well - more so if it starts to affect the livelihood of a business relying on its good condition. This article is to inform members that the sub- committee formed to look into this matter has been actively engaged in strategic discussions, due diligence and meetings with LMS and Bayside City Council (BCC). Mindful of our excellent relationship with LMS we are keen to solve the problem jointly with LMS and all other stake holders. Our initial due diligence via a request for FOI from BCC and on-line council meeting archives revealed that Council had discussed storm water harvesting and an amount of funds had been put aside for the BPGC and Dendy Park. This has since been shelved until some future date. Recently the sub-committee met with representatives of LMS and a plan was put together to meet with the BCC as soon as possible. That meeting took place on Thursday 29 th October at the BCC . It seems from what was learnt at the meeting that money (of course) is the big issue. A short term solution to gain more water than is currently possible is to repair the pump system adjacent to Creswick Rd. using a possible $42k allocated by BCC for the problem. Agreement from Gary Bramich (LMS) and Council has been reached to try to sort the pit /dam drainage system and they are getting Kingsley’s drawings and arranging to meet. Gary and Kingsley Ferguson and Ground staff will be doing this investigation on site. In the mean time the sub-committee is working on new activities to lift this issue into the public profile to galvanise support. We will be designing a petition and flyers/doorknocks and will need the entire membership of this fine club to support the BGC Committee of Management in this endeavour. More will be advised as we move forward. Brighton Golf Course Condition - Sub-Committee

What’s happening to Brighton Public Golf Course?Since the end of last summer Brighton Golf Clubmembers have been questioning ‘What’s happeningwith the condition of the golf course?’.

This question arises out of the difficulty experiencedwhen driving up the centre of some of the fairways onlyto land in a dry or grassy divot.

Landing in a bunker that hasn’t been raked or under abush with low lying foliage represents playing a crookshot resulting in the obvious penalty - not so with thefairways. Surely a golfer that loves his sport and enjoysplaying the game should expect to be rewarded whenplaying a good shot and is entitled to ask ‘What’shappening to the Brighton Golf Course?’ when his balllands in an un-repaired divot or on a patch of grounddevoid of grass.

And of course they have every right to do so since theGolf Club is a Bayside City Council rate payer and everyrate payer should raise questions when they becomeaware of the deteriorating condition of the communityasset that we know so well - more so if it starts to affectthe livelihood of a business relying on its good condition.

This article is to inform members that the sub-committee formed to look into this matter has beenactively engaged in strategic discussions, due diligenceand meetings with LMS and Bayside City Council (BCC).

Mindful of our excellent relationship with LMS we arekeen to solve the problem jointly with LMS and all otherstake holders.

Our initial due diligence via a request for FOI from BCCand on-line council meeting archives revealed thatCouncil had discussed storm water harvesting and an

amount of funds had been put aside for the BPGC andDendy Park. This has since been shelved until somefuture date.

Recently the sub-committee met with representativesof LMS and a plan was put together to meet with theBCC as soon as possible.

That meeting took place on Thursday 29th October atthe BCC .

It seems from what was learnt at the meeting thatmoney (of course) is the big issue. A short term solutionto gain more water than is currently possible is to repairthe pump system adjacent to Creswick Rd. using apossible $42k allocated by BCC for the problem.

Agreement from Gary Bramich (LMS) and Council hasbeen reached to try to sort the pit /dam drainagesystem and they are getting Kingsley’s drawings andarranging to meet. Gary and Kingsley Ferguson andGround staff will be doing this investigation on site.

In the mean time the sub-committee is working on newactivities to lift this issue into the public profile togalvanise support. We will be designing a petitionand flyers/doorknocks and will need the entiremembership of this fine club to support the BGCCommittee of Management in this endeavour.

Secretary:Geoff Hergt (GH) referred to and discussed the BallotPaper and covering letter which, according to the clubrules, must be mailed to each eligible voting BGCmember. The point being that there were eight (8)nominations on the Ballot Paper and only five (5)positions available.

Four (4) male and four (4) female candidates havenominated. As there was currently only one (1)nomination for each of the positions of Treasurer,Secretary, Captain and Vice Captain should no morenominations be received by the deadline these fourcandidates will be declared elected at the 2015 AGM.

Our Rules require that each eligible voting club memberbe mailed a ballot paper. This will incur at a cost to theclub of circa $170.80 postage.

Captain’s Report:Club Captain John McCreery (JMcC) also mentionedthat at the Oct New Member Night four (4) new malemember applications were received being : JimWarden, Shane Pallant, Brad Canter & Tony Millard.Shane, Brad & Tony are joining under specialcircumstances to bolster our Scratch Pennant team.Moved successfully that these new members beadmitted to membership of the BGC.

Membership:See above. This increase to our Club membership inOctober is less than in previous years at this time andplaces enormous pressure on keeping the members wecurrently have and reducing resignations to an absoluteminimum.

Ladies Sub Committee Report:Oct Medal Day raffle netted $76 and all proceeds go tothe club. Play and Stay BGC club members going toRACV Healesville this year number 24. Severalprospective new lady members are anticipated beforeChristmas 2015.

Trivia Night:Date set of Friday Nov 27th for the Spring Trivia Night.See Flyer on page 9

House Sub Committee:Beau Roberts (BR) advised that:

● The long awaited bar fridge had been providedby member Ron Van Pelt. We thank Ron for hiskind generosity.

● He also recognised the efforts of Mark Pearsonin painting the table tops in the clubrooms. Paintused for this purpose was provided by Clubmember Colin Joel and we also thank Colin forhis support.

● Beau mentioned the inclusion of a variety of newlines available over the bar to assist members toobtain value by purchasing items on their HouseAccount.

Annual Affiliation Fee payment: GH referred to anextensive email he had sent to all CoM members. BRmade the point that the CoM should each year, at thetime the next year’s subscription components are set, increase the affiliation fee charged to members by anamount considered by the CoM to maintain a bufferbetween what the BGC charged members and what theVGL/GV/GA charged the BGC.

The issue is that the BGC does not know what theVGL/GV/GA charge per member will be until 15 monthsAFTER the BGC has charged and received that affiliationfee from our members.

We are charged in arrears on member numbers but arerequired to pay a current fee per member which bearsno relevance to the amount the BGC charged eachmember 15 months earlier.

It was agreed to adopt BR’s suggested option based onthe number of VGL affiliated BGC Club members as atSept 30th each year. Successful moved that the Affil feesto be set in Aug/Sept 2016 be increased by $5 peraffiliated member.

Variation in Junior age and Affiliation fees charged:GH drew CoM members attention to the fact that theVGL Juniors age range is up to 17 yo whereas the BGCJuniors age range is from 12 to 21 yo. VGL Affiliationfees for Juniors are circa $35.00 pa whereas BGC Juniorscan pay up to $70.00, the same as adults.

If we are to revert back to the VGL amount the BGC willhave to either carry the additional cost between whatthe VGL charge the BGC and what the BGC charge eachJunior or have two (2) separate Junior categories (andtherefore charges) based on age. No decision was madeat this stage as the number of Juniors was so low that itwas not a current issue but could become one if theJuniors numbers increased.

Ongoing VGL Delegate:John Sutherland (JS) agreed to carry on as Club Delegateand to offer his assistance in other areas even thoughhe is not standing for re election to the CoM beyond the2015 AGM.

President & Captains Day:Catering arrangements confirmed.

Member status: Life Member and Past President KevinSmith is very ill and Keith Williams is also unwell. Cardhas been sent to KW and a card will be sent to KS.

Congratulations went tothe team of Glenn Thomas, Stephen Pap, Brad Munroand Colin Joell who like Hawthorn won back to backtrophies for this event.

Following the round of golf it was good to see 70 – 80people in the Club House enjoying the atmosphere. Thisrepresented an almost full field and the Pro Shop wasable to top up any vacant spots with public players. Most of the players were able to complete their roundin under 4 hours leaving plenty of time for any footballarrangements.

The day was further enhanced with Club Member andsponsor of this event, Innes Ireland from The House ofGolf, donating gift vouchers for every player to use in hisBentleigh store. A raffle for a donated golf bag raised$270 for the Club that will go into the Future Fund.

V.G.L. Seniors & Veterans ChampionshipsThe VGL Men’s Seniors and Veterans Championshipswere held at the Brighton Golf Course on Thursday, 8th

October. While the greens had been cored and sandedrecently the ground staff mowed the greens on the dayto give the players the best surface to putt on given thecircumstances for the event.

Brighton had 10 entrants in the field of 68 and we werenot let down as two of our members took out majortrophies. Congratulations go to Kevin Pearce who wonthe Veterans Championship with a round of 75 beingthe best scratch score and Ken Brown had the best nettscore in the Veterans with a 62.

Many of the visiting players were disappointed with thecondition of the Brighton course when compared totheir own. Hopefully, something can be done withregard to watering of the course this coming summerbefore the course deteriorates even further.

Each year the Annual General Meeting (AGM) is thebest time to exercise your right and vote.

This year, amongst other things, we will be decidingwho manages our club for at least the next year and“Your Vote Counts”.

This is your opportunity, even obligation, to activelyparticipate in deciding who makes the decisions thatwill affect you. If you don’t vote at this November’s

AGM no one will know what you really think let alonebe able to support your thoughts.

So, attend the AGM – it is likely to run for about 30minutes, exercise your right to vote and make yourthoughts known.

Just remember - You have a vote and Your Vote Counts.

This November 17th (Tuesday) 7.30pm at the clubrooms.

See you there!!

Geoff Hergt Hon. Secretary/Public Officer BGC Inc.

This month I want to discuss Relief......How many times have you walked past a bunker andseen the rake up against the edge or placed like thephotos above?

Do you realize that if your ball rolls into a bunker andrests against the rake it may make it difficult for you oryour fellow players?

Yes you may remove the rake but if the ball moves, itMUST be replaced in the position it was originallyfound.

This may not offer you a stroke or it may be very difficultto play. For this reason, many courses ask players toreturn the rakes into the sand, facing the line that thefairway is oriented. This then allows any unfortunateplayer to at least have a shot (Please see next Issue).

Please consider this next time you walk past a bunker.

The other week I found 2 rakes on the 18 holes I walkedthat would have been acceptable. Kingsley, playing inthe group in front of me, placed his rake perfectly. Thanks Kingsley!

The next relief that concerns me is on the 5th and 7th

holes. Do you realize what the white paint on the treesmean?

If you read the ‘Local Rules’ sheet you will see that thisdefines an area of GUR. This means that relief can beachieved by taking the line of the painted trees anddetermining the nearest point of relief outside thisboundary and then allowing the one(1) club length fora dropping zone.

The problem I have though, is the overhangingbranches from a tree within the GUR are alsoconsidered to be GUR. So if you are in an area on the 7th

and an overhanging branch from such a GUR treeaffects your stance or swing, relief may be taken.

Again find the nearest point at which a stance andnormal swing can be made, allow the one(1) club lengthto determine the dropping zone and achieve relief. Youshould remember that you don’t have to take relief soif the best dropping zone you can take places you in aworse position, you can just elect to play it as it lies.

Finally, because it is GUR, if you are certain the ball islost in this area, you can play a new ball from theposition of relief that would have been best determinedfor where the ball would most probably be andcontinue without penalty.

Note: If you have other golf rules questions a member of theBGC match sub-committee will be pleased to assist.

The reason for the change to the provision of food arose because of the cost of providing catered food of areasonable quality and price and the impracticality of catering provided by BGC. We hope that the idea ofbringing your own food is acceptable and not inconvenient for members and guests.
