Its been a very eventful week . A number of committed people from Plett and the garden route who stand against cruelty to animals and dog fighting were at the court . The wedge competition saw some great action despite the lack of big waves. Lots of fun and excitement. The Peaceful protest against Jet Ski races during the Whale Season went very well. (See pics on hello plett facebook ) Our beautiful new day hospital in KwaNokuthula opened on Nelson Mandela Day Mandela Day celebration at Madiba’s Trees in Plettenberg bay was wonder-ful with a united loving enthusiastic spirit felt by all. (See pics on hello plett facebook)

And the weather has been absolutely fabulous. Those lovely sunny days we enjoy so during our Whale Season…. And the whales seem to be back in the bay. Hooray! Have a stupendous fun filled week in this Paradise called Plett.

3 minutes by the end of the day. Bridgetown-Zoutkloof Day 3: The Big One! 73km of which I had last seen it 7 years ago during the last Berg I did. After hitting a rock pretty hard in some rapid/broken weir (testament to the “bullet-proofness” of my awesome Knysna Racing boat) I noticed Robyn had fallen back. I kept up a nice solid speed, and worked out that if I maintained the quick pace I was sitting at (4:30) I could get this paddle over with in 3 hours. I managed to open up another 8 minutes on second place, an excellent day! Day 4: Zoutkloof to Port Owen 61km Finally, the homeward stretch. Cracking ice off my boat for the start did not get me excited, pretty soon though the sun had burnt through the mist and I was cruising along. This is not a race for sissies! The last few kilometres were really special, as all the people came out of their houses, or sat

Michele Eray wins 50th Berg River Canoe marathon We are all so proud of our Olympian Michele Eray who has just won the gruelling 4 day Berg River Marathon. This is some of her experience of the event as related on her blog Doing the 50th Berg River Marathon was always on my hit list of things to do. Any race that is celebrating its 50th edition has to be special. With a brand like Windhoek backing it (“100% Committment All the Way”) made for a perfect match, as once you got on the start line, there was only one way to the finish 244km down the river at Port Owen… 100% Committment. It’s hard to describe what it’s like, paddling more or less 60km every day, I can describe what it’s like to race it: “awesome”! To push yourself over those kinds of distances is a great challenge, and I thoroughly enjoyed every arm-breaking, blister-forming, butt-paining moment of it. For those guys who had epic 9 hour days, I can only salute you, and say “Well Done” that is a massive achieve-ment. “Nobody trips over mountains. It is the small pebble that causes you to stum-ble. Pass all the pebbles in your path and you will find you have crossed the moun-tain.” ~Author Unknown Day 1: Paarl – Zonquasdrift. 62km Day 1 was pretty smooth racing for me. I managed to get a solid 8 minute lead, which would come in handy with the women’s race format (being that each day you start in a women’s only batch, no elapsed time start). Day 2 Zonquasdrift-Bridgetown: 45.6km Day 2 saw us start not only after the 30 minutes of elapsed time guys, but alas after another batch of 25 or so men. Once again, luckily no major impact was felt (except I reckon some of the guys should go on a diet-their waves were massive!) I had a 50m lead, which I then extended to

on boats in the Port Owen marina, and cheered us on. I had a police escort boat travel with me from the old finish at the bridge all the way , keeping other boats from speeding around me! Very cool. I had goose bumps as I saw the finish, and my first Berg win! Thanks to my mom for sec-onding me, and to all my sponsors for backing me (especially Janine and Richard at Thule and Albert and Hub at Knysna Racing Kayaks for the awesome K1 and paddle). That 244km would have been a lot longer without those caffeine filled chocolate energy gels from PVM Well done to Robyn on holding off my old K4 partner Jen for 2nd, and Jen on converting from sprinting just a few weeks ago to take 3rd in an ultra-distance event! Well done Hank on your 8th win, you really are a legend! Snippets for the Week Thank you to Johannes and The Round Table for donating so generously. It is much appreciated. Also, to everyone who continues to help keep the charity shop well stocked. As I do road for road in Kwanokuthula daily, I still see things I have never seen before. This week I found a puppy of about 4 months old, with a "kattie" wired around his neck. The top parts went way past his head and the bottom stick was so long, he couldn't put his head down to even drink water. The wire was so tight on the back of his head. I know they use this method in the rural areas to keep the cattle from going through fences and straying. Never could I imagine that this method could possibly be applied to keep a dog from going through a fence. We learn every day. A Pitbull puppy, now 3 months old, bred and sold for R600.00, by one of our breeders in New Horizons, is having the following treatment: 1. He is chained up on a very heavy chain 2. He is put away from sight and has human contact only with his owner 3. He has a wheel rim of a trailer, attached to chain, to pull around 4. He has not been vaccinated, as his owner cannot afford 5. He is excercised daily I cannot help but wonder why this puppy is being treated this way? Zuki is a booklet about a Pitbull's life. It is available at Marine Way Animal Hospital and the charity shop. Bitou Business Buzz WHERE THERE IS LIFE…there is hope. Hoping that the airport situation is going to be resolved at last. I have lived in this beautiful part of South Africa for the last thirty one years, during this relatively lengthy period I have listened to and partaken in many discussions about this very much needed commodity. Everything seemed on track when an well-known airline offered an appreciated service and took the initiative of flying the whole council to a successful airport located in a town similar in size to ours. BUT… as years went by less and less activity took place but more and more money was spend on improvements such as the upgrading of the runway and erecting an expensive security fence. Hopefully, the latest advertising for tenders dealing with the management of the airfield produced seventeen replies, two were considered promising by an evaluating committee together with the opinion of an independent evaluator. It seems likely, keeping fingers crossed, that our airport could become a reality within a short time. Many facets of our community’s life would show vast improvements…there is the hope! The agenda of the last council meeting included an item on the election of ward committee members . The previous criteria is considered as a guide to nominate ten members of the community whose opinions recorded at the ward committee meetings is recorded and tabled at the Council meeting. After many teething problems the structures are starting to bear fruit and will be of immense value to a council willing to consider them. Advertisements will shortly appear in various publications indicating the procedure to follow…give it some serious thought! Greetings, Ald. Life in Plett THE GLASS-THE DOG AND THE HOLES I also have a little bone to pick with my readers because after I discovered my half letter, I thought “Oh well no-one would notice if I just stopped all together”. You know one needs a little encouragement. Last week I sent my column in two pieces – the one was the story of the glass that had a wonderful time chatting to my washing in the industrial machine and came out in better condition than my dishwasher washing, which, mostly has to have two sessions. One in the dishwasher then a whole bunch (mainly glass) has to then be

arrested. As it is in Summer my male retired neighbour has to permanently stare out to sea only, when he is in his garden or be totally disillusioned by women. This week We got a rather unusual phone call in the middle of the night. Friend Helen – hysterical – needed beloved to come and rescue her golden retriever that had managed to get herself firmly stuck in the burglar bars. Beloved duly set off and found the household in a state including two sets of guests. (She has a B & B). After calming the dog down, they tried coating her vaseline, cooking oil you name it but no moving. Meanwhile doggie was now quite calm with all the attention and patting and loving, so, Beloved started to saw her out of her dilemma. Guests all oohing and aahing in German. All of a sudden hound number two, Georgie, discovers an opening she has been waiting for, for years. So she started her own private game of jumping on her sisters back, crawling under her, chewing her tail, nipping her and just generally everything she could think of that normally was impossible. Finally hound number one took off and funnily now shows no interest in burglar bars, in fact, will walk miles around to get in or out of the house. (We – the girls ) went for lunch last week at a very well known restaurant (no names) and one of the ladies only drinks cocktails – unlike the rest of us who do justice to bottles of wine. Anyway she asked for a ‘Cosmopolitan’ and with all the eagerness and seriousness of a new waiter, he asked ‘The latest magazine madam’? Needless to say he also eventually saw the reason why we were rolling around on the floor. I see Plett is very kindly outlining the potholes in yellow paint so that we can see them well in advance and plan our route around them, like across ‘Mr. Brown’s’ pride and joy lawn. Some years ago myself and Hollywood all had breast implants to Enhance our great beauty, but, yesterday after a visit to the doctor I have discovered that mine have capsular calcification. This does Not perturb anybody except me it seems. No money, no removal. So I will just have to sit back and see whether I am sneakily turning to stone, then I can replace another statue-to-be on one of Plett’s new roundabouts. I was on the telephone to my lady from Plett Properties – no I am Not selling up she looks after the interests of our “Estate”. She Wanted to know whether they could come and cut the grass on the Empty plots, so we went from that to the birdlife I am cultivating here and so need to be present. From there we went to the weather And how delighted she is now that she has thawed out. Letter via the Editor Main Street Parking: Dear main street business owners (and side streets). Do you realize that business is a bit slow lately? Where is your car parked? In main street perhaps? Do you not think that the bays you and your employee’s cars take up could be more productive if it was designated for visitors to our town? I look left and right and only see CX registrations. No GP,CA etc. Do you think this is wise? More importantly, do you realize hat most of the parking bays are I hour parking bays? Lets bring more visitors to town’s Main street. There is a hug property below Pletts municipality which could be utilized for parking, then there is the parking bays designated behind your buildings, please make use of those! A traffic officer has informed me that they will be issuing petty fines for disobeyers of the law. So best you all save some money! Concerned main street business owner. We couldn’t agree more. Perhaps a deal could be made with the two big centres in the CBD to have their top stories or part thereof given over to local workers’ parking . It would benefit all businesses. As I do road for road in Kwanokuthula daily, I still see things I have never seen before. This week I found a puppy of about 4 months old, with a "kattie" wired around his neck. The top parts went way past his head and the bottom stick was so long, he couldn't put his head down to even drink water. The wire was so tight on the back of his head. I know they use this method in the rural areas to keep the cattle from going through fences and straying. Never could I imagine that this method could possibly be applied to keep a dog from going through a fence. We learn every day. A Pitbull puppy, now 3 months old, bred and sold for R600.00, by one of our breeders in New Horizons, is having the following treatment: 1. He is chained up on a very heavy chain 2. He is put away from sight and has human contact only with his owner 3. He has a wheel rim of a trailer, attached to chain, to pull around 4. He has not been vaccinated, as his owner cannot afford 5. Conservation Corner Cape clawless otter (Aonyx capensis) Found along the south coast with at least two know family units in Plettenberg Bay. This sleek and lithe animal is found in salt or freshwater habitats. It is named clawless as it lacks ‘claws’ but has nails on their fingers and toes. They have thick strong tails, their hind toes are webbed and fore toes are very sensitive for finding their prey. They feed predominately on fish, crustaceans, octopus, molluscs, birds and insects. They can grow as large as 110-160 cm in total length and between 10-21 kg. They will have cubs once a year and between 2-3 cubs per litter with a gestation period of 60-65 days. The are generally most active early in the mornings and late in the afternoons but may be seen hunting at any time of the day or night. Conservation Corner Cape clawless otter (Aonyx capensis) Found along the south coast with at least two know family units in Plettenberg Bay. This sleek and lithe animal is found in salt or freshwater habitats. It is named clawless as it lacks ‘claws’ but has nails on their fingers and toes. They have thick strong tails, their hind toes are webbed and fore toes are very sensitive for finding their prey. They feed predominately on fish, crustaceans, octopus, molluscs, birds and insects. They can grow as large as 110-160 cm in total length and between 10-21 kg. They will have cubs once a year and between 2-3 cubs per litter with a gestation period of 60-65 days. The are generally most active early in the mornings and late in the afternoons but may be seen hunting at any time of the day or night. Letter via the Editor Hi all, I don't know about you but I certainly can’t afford to have any more of my hard earned money ploughed into Eskom's mistakes and poor management. Please - we have to try and fight this. It is shocking to think that South Africans are just going to sit back and take this. This is very important, we need everyone to add to our list; otherwise we are all going to pay another 53% on our electricity bills. I am already paying double after this last increase on the 01 July. This is everyone’s prob-lem. Take note, eskom has stopped load shedding until after the rate hike comes in, so that we can accept the hike without too much moaning. We have until the 19th to petition and there has been a poor response. Petition against Eskom's rate hike of 53% people, please. We have to stand together (if only this once) on the eskom issue. Die kinders het saam met Josephine en Stella wat beurte gemaak het om die biblioteek te beman, Susan Swartz (Aunt Susan soos die kinders haar noem), Goran van Spotlight, vullis in en rondom die biblioteek opgetel. Vir die kinders was dit ‘n aardigheid om met vullissakke rond te trippel en vullis op te tel. Hulle was verskriklik entoesiasties. Na die groupie hulle 67 minute nuttig spandeer het, was hulle op ‘n koeldrankie getrakteer wat die Groot Meneer van Spotlight gesponsor het. Hulle dag het nie daar opgehou nie. Letter via the Editor To whom it may concern: The ocean was made for everyone to enjoy. Surfers, paddlers, swimmers, fisherman and yes jet skiers as well. On any given day in December there are at least 5 jet skis enjoying themselves in the waves. The recent compo held off central beach was held as far as I am concerned in an orderly way. Safety was a priority and there were plenty marshals and officials around. Yes, maybe the timing due to the whales being in the bay was wrong. But if there is so much concern then we should look at the bigger picture. Lets stop boat based whale watching in Plett. Many years ago when boat based whale watching was in its prime, i can recall seeing up to 4/6 blue boats and 3 red boats all day everyday doing their thing. There are plenty whales to see. Since then there has definitely been a decrease in whales. I say that being a previous employee of a boat based company in Plett. After leaving I did some temp work on weekends. On a particular day, we approached a whale up to 50m. The whale did not want us there and decided to leave. There are guidelines for skippers to follow that have been drawn up by the powers that be. Seeing that the whale had moved on, I decided to look elsewhere . But unfortunately there was nothing. Arriving back at the shop I was shunned upon by the guide and others. (The tip that was hopefully going to be received was not and that upset some.) But I followed the rules and did what is supposed to be done. May I add that ± 70% of the passengers arrived on a bus, did the trip then left Plett to the next destination not spending any money in Plett. If you look at Agulhas and surrounding areas were there is no boat based whale watching the whales are

Especially Kwanokuthula since June up until last week was about 3 funerals on the same grave yard, this is very painful to all of us. On that situation there’s nothing we can do because only God decided about our deadlines, everything depends on Him, His the beginning, the end of our life. We are all His children.
