Wildlife Vaasa Festival 2012:  BOOK OF ENTRIES (part 2) PART 1.  Childen and Youth film competition and media education projects   Overview Dear Friends and Colleagues,  

Over the  last ten years, animation and movie making at schools has been developing  in a very  fast pace and  in many countries, with  new  audio‐visual  technologies  allowing  nowadays  high definition  picture  quality  with  easy  to  use  equipment. Furthermore,  new  publishing media  have  now  been  available and  free  to  use  for  anyone  in  order  to  publish  films  on‐line. Under  such  circumstances,  media  education  has  started  to integrate more easy inside the  schools, where school classes are now well equipped with video cameras and video projectors available, allowing media educators to teach video editing and implement sound recording sessions into the classroom. In addition, the number  of  film  festivals  hosting  such  films  have  increased,  hosting  and  circulating  media education project works, on a global scale.    

Wildlife Vaasa  Festival  has  been  active  in  that  field  from  year 2004, when the Finnish Ministry of Education launched a project called  “Filmihillo”,  which  aimed  to  promote  media  and  film education  for  children  and  young  people  across  Finland.  Our festival  responded positively  to  that  call, by  adding  a Children and  Youth  Film  day  in  the  festival  program  and  a  second  film competition in its competitive sectors, which aimed to host only films made by children and young people. As a result, in this very 

first competition participated 44 films, most of them from Finland and Sweden.    

Two  years  later,  in  2006,  Children  and  Youth  film  competition’s number of entries and the number of countries started to  increase, reflecting  a positive  development  in  the  field  of media  education, until  2008,  when  our  festival  launched  its  own  media  education project, starting to implement film making projects at schools in the  south Ostrobothnian  towns  of  Kristinestad, Metsälä  and  Skaftung, producing there  2 documentaries and 6 shadow theatre animations.  The  project  continued  in  2009  in  Vaasa with  the  production  of  4 documentary  films  in  co‐operation  with  primary  schools  and  the city’s  young  foreigners  department.  The  same  year,  the  project received  a  significant  financial  support  from  the  Finnish  Culture Foundation,  in  order  to  expand  film  production  at  schools  in  the whole region.       

 

Therefore,  in  2010,  thanks  to  our  participants  motivation,  the project has been most successful with a total production of 16 film projects  that  year;  in  Vaasa,  Seinäjoki,  Isokyrö  and  Korsnäs, while the  festival’s  Children  and  Youth  Competition  in  2010  hit  a  new record  hosting  49  films  from  12  countries,  including  films  from Armenia, Greece and Taiwan. Meanwhile, some of these films were subtitled in English to be send to festivals in China, Armenia, Greece and Taiwan, while support from the Swedish Cultural Foundation  in Finland  and  the  Regional  Council  of Ostrobothnia  allowed  us  in  2011  to  start making  films  at schools situated in the Swedish speaking coastal area of our region, with the help of Finnish author and poet Mrs. Carita Nyström, who gladly joined our project and our production team from 2010, 

Carita  Nyström  did  a  fantastic  work  in  creating motivation among pupils, planning and coordinating shooting days and editing sessions and assisting with the  school  pupils  to  create  very  interesting  film stories  using  her  professional  techniques.  The combination  of  such  dynamics  brought  up  nature films  floating  with  culture  traditions  and  rich information  transfer  from  the old generation  to  the new. In addition, active involvement by teachers and adults has helped a  lot  to add more  strong  content 

and message into these productions.   

Apart  from  production  of  the  above  mentioned    films,  our media  education  also  includes  film  screenings  and  film  production workshops  for  adults who wish  to  develop  their audio visual skills to a higher  level – all courses are  'hands‐on' and taught by professional filmmakers and teachers as  Nik Van Eckmann who has more  that 30 years experience  in film production.  All those successful operations during the last 6  years  were  made  possible  by  financial  support  from  the Finnish Culture  Foundation's,  South Ostrobothnian  Foundation,  The  Swedish Cultural  Fund  in Finland, the Regional Council of Ostrobothnia, Child and Nature Foundation, the Ostrobothnian museum  and  Vaasa  City  and we  are  very  grateful  for  their  support  which make  this  project successful.  

Last year,  in 2011 another film project with young  immigrants from  Vaasa  was  very  successfully  implemented.  The  film “Mission  Possible”  is  reflecting  young  immigrants  and  their teacher’s  opinions  concerning  their  integration  to  Finnish society.  The  film  also  stresses  the  role  of  local  environment awareness through nature trips as an integration tool. For that, the film included a nature trip to Kvarken archipelago.    

All  these  new  films  produced  during  the  last  2  years  during  our project,  together  with  100  more,  taking  part  in  this  year’s competition,  will  make  another  record  of  104  films  from  11 countries participating this year. Most of them, will be screened and presented  at  Ritz  Theatre  on  Sunday  25th  November,  during  the Children  and Youth  Film Day day when we will  also  announce  the results and the winners of this year’s  film competition.  The award categories include:  

 

Nature films made by children 8‐12 years   

Nature films made by young people 13‐25 years   

Animation films made by children and youth    

Finally, we would like to thank all our festival participants, especially our festival partners Camera Zizanio Festival from Greece, SunChild Festival from Armenia and ShortShorts Festival  in Japan who are all very active in the field of media education and who sent their contributions this year.  We  are  very  proud  to  present  their works,  because  apart  from  integrating  and  disseminating media education  throughout  the world,  their  films  also depict  and  reflect  the new  generations points of viewing  their  future within  the  functioning of  their own  societies,  including  the  social aftermath of the latest economic crisis in Europe, a crisis that affects their dreams and their future together with the  future of our planet, as a result of human  interaction towards mother Nature and the well being of our planet Earth.

MEDIABUS PROJECT

A series of 16 short environmental films

by Children around Finland

produced by Maikki Kantola and her team

The Organization: Videootit ry VIDEOVANKKURI (Video wagon) project 

Videovankkuri (Video wagon) is a national hands-on media education project. It offers both video and photography workshops, whose aim is to teach children and youngsters to use media equipment. Videovankkuri also trains teachers and others who can apply these skills and knowledge in their work. Besides letting kids and young people have their voices heard, the project records Finnish folklore and local history through photography, video and animation. According to a fixed schedule, Videovankkuri visits Finnish schools, libraries, youth and culture centres, child welfare institutes, nursery schools and museums. Workshops last from 1-3 days. The instructors bring the equipment with them, but they also show how to use the existing equipment on location. The instructors are all qualified professionals from the registered association Videootit, which is an organisation consisting of people with long working history with children and youngsters and art and media education. Videootit thanks The Ministry of Education and Culture for their significant support.

The function of Videovankkuri

The pupils have an opportunity to learn about making documentaries, drama, animation and music or art videos. They can also explore both documentary and staged photos, and learn about content analysis. Other subjects of the video and photography projects besides the ones youngsters have thought of themselves can be based on local stories, beliefs and old tales.

Young people’s own thoughts

The project offers a medium to youngsters to express themselves. Through the films the participants can tell about things that matter to them. The topics can be funny or sad, but the aim is to deal with personal, subjective issues.

 

 

Recording folklore

In some places Videovankkuri produces videos and animations about Finnish folklore and local history. The films can tell about local stories, beliefs and old tales. If there is a museum or a building involved in the story nearby, it is possible to make a fictional film. We can also collect documentary material or create an animation based on the subject. We hope to cooperate with local cultural services and museums.

Special themes and cooperational partners

Videovankkuri works in collaboration with various organisations and partners. The workshops can be modified according to their wishes; for example, the workshop participants can make films about nature and environmental conservation.

Execution of a workshop

The maximum number of participants in a workshop is 25 people. If possible, a guideline and a set of orientation exercises are sent to the group in advance. It is easier to make documentaries and fictional films if their creators have had time to think about a subject in advance. When working in animation, the directors are given material both for planning the story and making the characters. A workshop will last one to three days depending on the size of the group and the genre of the films. Animations take longer than documentaries. The day begins with the discussion on the subject. We will examine either:

A) Film

We will plan the films, write screenplays and draw storyboards together. Then we will get acquainted with cameras, pedestals, sound recording and lightning. The pupils will be instructed on shooting the film and the general principles of film‐making. At the end of the process we will watch the films and go through the process in a feedback discussion. 

B) Photography

We will talk about ideas for the photos and make them more detailed by drawing. To orientate ourselves in the world of photography, we will study the subtle differences of staged and documentary photographs by looking at examples of both. Then we will examine how the camera and the pedestal work and what features the participants’ own cameras have, and carry out small photography assignments. If needed, we will build a small studio and learn to use it. The pupils will carry out their photography project, depending on the subject and style (documentary/staged), either in‐or outdoors. After the shoot the pupils are taught photo manipulation. When finished, the photographs will be put on display and discussed, as will the whole process.

 

 

 

Equipment: Videootit will bring the necessary equipment for the making of the films with them (four units of cameras and laptops with editing programs). Our collaborators need not worry about equipment; however, it would be practical if there are cameras, editing software etc. that can be used. It would be helpful for the photography assignment if the pupils brought their own cameras with them.  

Aim: The aim of making the films and photos, besides media education, is to help the youngsters to search for their identity and find their bearings in connection with their own cultural background. The project can also be considered as a social art project. The intention is to offer kids and young people new instruments for self‐expression and facing new experiences. The participants are given skills for dealing with media and information about photography and different genres of film. As a result of the project the youngsters will tell their own story. Other subjects will be both Finnish and foreign folklore. The workshops suit all groups of children and young people. Immigrants and special needs groups are especially important for us.

Distribution of the works: The organisers of Videovankkuri keep their eyes open for festivals, competitions and events. The intention is to distribute the finished works both through the Videootit Facebook pages and various events to the general public and as many viewers as possible.

Collaborators

Videovankkuri is happy to collaborate with both national and local media educators. It would be ideal to plan the operations together so that through working in cooperation with each other we could cover as much of Finland as possible. Our collaborators are the chosen schools, other educational institutes and cultural organisations we work with. They provide the space needed, and the instructors bring the equipment. It would be useful to know in advance what sort of equipment our collaborators have, as that would facilitate more effective instruction.

The Ministry of Education and Culture has greatly supported our work, but we are also looking for sponsors who would assist us financially when we are visiting their area.

Co‐operation between Wildlife Vaasa Festival with Köpings school in Malax ,

 SunChild Festival was established in 2007 by the Foundation for the Preservation of Wildlife 

and Cultural Assets (FPWC). The festival is a biennial event and the only environmental festival in the entire South Caucasus region. SunChild 3rd International Environmental Festival is scheduled for October 14 ‐ 18, 2011.The festival will take place at different venues throughout the city centre of Yerevan. The Festival is implemented by FPWC and its general partner VivaCell‐MTS. Wildlife Vaasa Festival co‐operates with Sunchild Festival from the year 2006. This year, the festival submttes the following entries:

 SunChild Eco‐Club of Sisian was founded in 2008 by FPWC as a part of “SunChild” Eco‐Club Network in the frames of “SunChild” Environmental Education Program. Kids of the age of 13‐16 attend this center of environmental education where they learn the most diverse range of environmental subjects. Under the supervision of professional filmmakers, photographers and artists the young members of the Eco‐Club learn to create nature and wildlife photos as well as to shoot films on the local environmental problems.

Yeghegnadzor SunChild Eco‐club was established in 2008. The Eco‐club regularly organizes cleaning of historical and cultural sites, garbage collection and tree planting in the region. In 2009 the Eco‐club members cleaned the gorge of Yeghegis bringing together the youth and school children of Yeghegnadzor.

ORIGIN: The European Meeting of Young People’s Audiovisual Creation – Camera Zizanio began in 2001 as an initiative of Youth Plan in the framework of the Olympia International Film Festival for Children and Young People activities. 

SPECIAL CHARACTERISTICS: Camera Zizanio shows films created by children and young people under 20 years of age. However, Camera Zizanio is not a Festival. As our name states, it is a “Meeting” which we believe is more important. For us to come together, see creations by young people, chat, have fun, make friends and plan for the future; a future common to all the people on this planet.

CAMERA ZIZANIO has gradually developed into a very important European meeting of young people’s audiovisual creation, with the overall aim to create a dynamic area for communication, artistic creation and exchange of ideas among young people with similar interests. Today, Camera Zizanio is the biggest Europe‐wide Meeting for the audiovisual creation of young people. Hundreds of children and educators from all over Europe and Greece meet every year, in order to present their work, made in school or other workshops or in private, to exchange ideas, to collaborate and to come to agreements for common activities.

1. China - Ya’an Panda Animal & Nature Film festival

1， ‘Elephanting’ : Running Time: 79’ Completed year:2009 Director: Xiao Wei Synopsis: While being a volunteer for forests protection,  Mr Xiaowei went to the tropic forests of the Pacific Ocean Islands. When he arrived in the “Eco Feeling” site belonged by the Boong people, he felt an unexpected horrific shock. Although, everyone knew that this 100‐year old “tree” will fall, for Mr Xiao, the death is not as terrible as waiting to die.. 

2, ‘Out of the Rock comes the life’ Running Time: 53’ Completed year: 2010 Director: Luo Xiaoyun Synopsis: 

The film tells the story of two panda babies who survived the great earthquake in Sichuan province back in 2008, The film depicts the relationship between feeders and panda babies, showing also how Pandas go back to the nature for the first time. However, Uncle Zhang, who used to live in Wo‐long, the home place of Giant Panda and who lived with Giant Pandas in the nature, he still prefers to stay in the mountains. In order to move to a new house and give up his land to Pandas, Uncle Zhang proposed 3 conditions…

Synopsis: This is a story about the relationship between human and nature. A swallow nest was built on the electric wire, near Wang’s house. The rain has caused the short circuit. In order not to disturb the swallow, Wang managed to repair the line despite the darkness at night. A swallow baby then was born, as Wang considers it as his own family member, creating harmonious environment and space for the swallow …. 

4, ‘FeiFei’s Story’ Running Time: 14’35’’ Completed year:2009 Category: Documentary Director : Lin Yizhou  Synopsis: This film tells us a story about the grown‐up experience of a Thamin, called “Feifei”. The Thamin is the national protected animal in China. In Hainan city, there is a natural reserve area of Thamin. The film also raises the awareness of wildlife protection, stimulating the general public to pay attention to wildlife conservation. 

5, The story of Yaya and Anan (animation) Running Time:2’30’’ Completed year:2011 Category:Animation Director : Liu Zhong  Synopsis: The story starts with the fairy tale——Nvwa Mending the Sky. A magic stone turns into a cute panda, who guides us to a series of beautiful scenery in the city of Ya’an . We could see all these places, and get  the opportunity to know further about the Tea and Rain culture in Ya’an.  

6, Moonbear Running Time: 46’ Completed year:2012 Director : Xiong junhui, Chen yuanzhong  Synopsis: The film is the first documentary in China that reveals the brutal truth behind the practice of extracting bear bile. It brings to the fore the tragic plight of the “moon bear” which has endured such imperceptible torture in China. It presents in turn rescue operations and cruel behaviours, and unites the thought with the fact, faithfully recording humanity’s ruthless practice of taking things from animals from a humanistic perspective. The film is characterized by its theme of animal protection, thrilling undercover investigation and solemn exploration.

1. Kosi: Injustice with Millions of Villagers and Revolt by Kosi River  by Vishaal Nityanand,  (INDIA 2011) 27min 

Film Synopsis The film tells the story of the River Kosi and the issues associated with it. The history of the Kosi barrage and its embankments is the history of the problems associated with the Kosi. The premise is a proposal made in 1953 which stipulated that embankments would be made on both sides of the Kosi ‐ the Indian and the Nepal region. The canals exist. But the embankments resulted in restricting the flow of water in a smaller area as compared to a wider area earlier. Around 15 lakh people (from the Indian side and Nepal region) live within the embankments. Fifty five families were promised relief land. They say none have been given. When the river is in flood, the people must bear its wrath  

Filmmaker’s Biography Vishaal  Nityanand  signed  his  first  Hindi  feature  film  "Aarambh"  as  lead  actor  directed  by Hyderabad‐based  director  Smitha  Sashidharan  in  2006. He  is  chief  executive  in  Cinematic  Arts Productions Pvt Ltd, Delhi and involved in several cinematic projects as producer/director/artist. 

 2. Rajaji ‐ A Forest by the Ganges by Praveen Singh (INDIA 2009) 28 min 

Film Synopsis "Rajaji: A Forest by the Ganges" explores the bio‐diversity of the little known Rajaji National Park situated in the Dehradun and Haridwar districts of Uttaranchal. Commissioned by the Uttarakhand Forest Department, the film seeks to bring to viewers the amazing bio‐diversity of Rajaji National Park, the challenges the park faces for protecting its wild‐life and forest corridors and the urgent need to conserve this haven of a unique and rich eco‐system, vital for people living in the plains of northern India.  The film‐makers spent over 150 days in the park over a period of a year‐and‐a‐half to film the park in all its splendour and beauty, across different seasons.  

Filmmaker’s Biography Praveen Singh started out as a reporter with the Panda‐winning series, "Living on The Edge" and has since done extensive production co‐ordination for the Paramount Television distributed reality wild‐life series, "Wild Things". His work profile includes "Indian Leopards ‐ The Killing Fields", his first independent documentary. As producer/director and cameraperson, he made 'Science Safari". As field producer, his documentary "The Future Beneath our Feet" received the UKEFF. His other major works include "The Asiatic Lion ‐ On a Roll Call", "Rajaji ‐ A Forest by the Ganges" and "Living for the Dead".  The multiple award‐winning director's photographs and videos are part of the Asia Trail Exhibit on Red Pandas at the National Zoo, Smithsonian, Washington, D.C. Singh is Director, Signature Infotainment Pvt. Ltd. 

 3. Earth Witness: Reflections on the Times and the Timeless  by Akanksha Joshi (INDIA 2011) 60 min 

Film Synopsis Four people ‐ a teacher, a farmer, a shepherd and a father ‐ find themselves on the frontline of Earth's biggest, most complex crisis: climate change. Belonging to India's ancient tribes, they bear witness to the science behind the changes that affects their day‐to‐day life. Living in diverse climatic regions ‐ the mountains of Nagaland, the grasslands of Kutch, the Gangetic delta and the forests of central India ‐ they use this challenge to battle courageously, making weapons of wisdom and compassion, and the strategy deployed in any respected battlefield ‐ flexibility to adapt to changing situations. Their lives journey through the dark labyrinths of the multi‐dimensional crisis, reflecting stories of our times: of trees, mining, monkeys, logging, rivers, seeds, waterfalls, flowers, and the spirit of the timeless.  

Filmmaker’s Biography Akanksha Joshi is an independent film‐maker. Her work ranges from short films made for television to long documentaries. "Passengers", a critically‐acclaimed film made during and after the 2002 Gujarat carnage was one of her first films. Her short film on the river Ganga addressing the global issue of climate change is regularly featured on national television. Joshi's film on India's largest coastal lake, "Chilika Bank" has been appreciated and awarded in many festivals, including the Livelihood Award in the 5th CMS Vatavaran festival. For highlighting the issues in Chilika, Joshi has been honoured with the Karmveer Puruskar, National People's Award for Social Justice and Citizen Action. 

 4. A Pestering Journey  by K R Manoj (INDIA 2011) 66 min 

Film Synopsis A voyage through two pesticide tragedies in post‐Independent India, "A Pestering Journey" is an attempt to interrogate the legitimate forms and technologies of killing available in a culture. The journey blurs the boundaries of nature and culture, of self and the other, of life and death and many other comfortable binaries we inhabit. It tries to ask how much regard for life a culture should have to ponder over the question, "what is a pest?" The film unravels the interwoven layers of culture and agriculture and foregrounds the logic of the green revolution. It challenges and changes the idioms of pesticide and genocide and reveals the claims over knowledge and expertise which pushes a pesticide like Endosulfan to a dubious position between poison and medicine. 

Filmmaker’s Biography  K R Manoj started his career as a journalist and gradually moved to the world of films, under the influence of Film Society Movement in Kerala. He is a passionate film society activist who thinks it's crucial to keep the non‐metropolitan nature of the movement alive in the contemporary times. He was editor of the journal, Drisyathalam, which introduced the language of critical film studies to Malayalam readers. His first production venture was a television series on Kathakali music for Doordarshan. He has co‐produced and directed the short film Agni (fire), 2003 and the documentary "16mm ‐ Memories Movement" and "A Machine" in 2007. Both won critical acclaim on several platforms including International Film Festival of India, (IFFI), and Goa. 

 5. The Miracle Water Village  by Rintu Thomas and Sushmit Ghosh (INDIA 2010) 14 min 

Film Synopsis As the world reels under the threat of unrelenting climate change, erratic monsoons and fast depleting groundwater reserves, "The Miracle Water Village" narrates the inspirational story of the impoverished farming community in India that reversed its fortunes through its visionary model of water management. Lying in one of the worst drought‐prone regions of India, the village of Hiware Bazar battled many decades of sparse rain and failed crops. However, 20 years ago, the entire village came together to script a silent revolution by designing a rainwater‐harvesting model that saved every drop of the scanty rain they received. Today, the village is literally an oasis in the middle of the desert, boasting of bumper harvests, dairy co‐operatives, millionaire families and visionary farmers. 

Filmmaker’s Biography Rintu Thomas and Sushmit Ghosh are documentary film‐makers who run an independent media outfit ‐ Black Ticket Films ‐ and have produced and directed award‐winning films that explore issues of gender and sexuality, HIV AIDS, disability, street children and climate change. Their films have been screened in film festivals across the world and also premiered on the National Geographic Channel and NDTV. They also conduct film appreciation and film‐making workshops in various educational institutions in Delhi. Their independent films include "The Miracle Water Village" (2010), "In Search of My Home" (2010), "Children of the Night" (2009), "Flying Inside My Body" (2008), "Bullets and Butterflies" (2007). "The Miracle Water Village" won the Best Film Award at the 4th Cine Water to Drink / 4o. Cine Água de Beber, Amazon, 2010

Film Synopsis Asiatic wild dogs or dhole are one of the most fascinating pack‐living predators in the Indian forests. Until a few decades ago, they were branded as bloody killers and were mercilessly slaughtered to near extinction. Senani, a wildlife film‐maker and naturalist, tracked a dhole in the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve of south India, for over fifteen years. He finally manages to enter their private lives, and unravel their secrets. This is the story of Kennai, the red dog, who becomes his particular fascination. When Kennai was very young, her mother was killed by a tiger. Kennai decides to leave her natal pack, in search of her future. This fascinatig series is a gripping story of a great survivor, backed by a several hair‐raising sequences, hitherto unknown pack dynamics and never‐before‐filmed behaviour. 

  

Filmmaker’s Biography Senani Hegde is a wild‐life film‐maker/director/cameraman by profession. He has to his credit more than 40 photo‐essays on natural history, in Kannada and English. He has contributed over one thousand 35mm colour transparencies to leading books on birds, world over. His film "The Pack" became the first‐ever Indian film to win Animal Behaviour Panda award at Wildscreen Film Festival 2010, Bristol, UK. His previous film "Wild Dog Diaries" has won multiple international awards ‐ the Best of Festival Grand Award at Japan Wildlife Film Festival (2007), Best of Festival Award at CMS VATAVARAN, India (2007), Best Nature Documentary Award at Festival de l'Oiseau del la Nature, France (2008). In 2006, Hegde was awarded Karnataka Rajyothsava Award and in 1999, the Karnataka Sahitya Academy Award for the book "Jeeva Jala".  

7. Home ‐ Our Garden of Eden  by Suresh Elamon (INDIA 2011) 29 min  

Film Synopsis The film "Home ‐ Our Garden of Eden" reveals the wonders of nature which exist in the backyard of our homes. The film tells the story of a father who is a wild‐life enthusiast and his two children. Inspired by the several jungle stories they have heard from their father, they pester him to take them to a sanctuary. He agrees on the condition that they should first look out for the natural world in their garden and backyard. They readily agree. When they learn that one of the unusual garden spiders they saw in their backyard happens to be an entirely new species of the Comb‐footed spider, they realise their backyard is indeed a veritable Garden of Eden!  

Filmmaker’s Biography Suresh Elamon, writer, naturalist, wild‐life photographer and film‐maker, has been studying, photo/video documenting and writing about the biodiversity of southern Western Ghats for the past thirty years. He has published photographs and written articles in several magazines and journals like The Indian Express, The Hindu, The Frontline, Reader's Digest, Swagat, Namaskar, etc. His book for children, Butterflies, bagged two state awards for best popular science book. He has also published Birds of Periyar, a book illustrating 150 bird species of Periyar Tiger Reserve. His film "In Quest of the Frogmouth's Nest" was finalist at BBC Wildscreen 2002. Another film on the butterflies of Periyar Tiger Reserve, "Angels in Tigerland", bagged award for Best Cinematography, CMS VATAVARAN 2007. It also won Best Film Award, Vasundhara Wildlife Film Festival 2009. 

8. The Fall of Jataayu  by Siddharth M P and Kyriakos Stylianopoulos, (INDIA 2009) 25 min 

Film Synopsis As in the Hindu mythology Ramayana, Jataayu, the great vulture king, and his kind have been once again, in modern times, dealt a cruel blow. Can his kinsmen climb back from the depths of uncertainty? From the captive breeding center at Pinjore, all the way down south to the last stronghold of vultures in Wynad, "The Fall of Jataayu" is a journey through belief, culture, and the struggle of a few dedicated scientists in their attempts to save a dying species.  

Filmmakers Biographies Siddharth M P Siddharth's interest in wild‐life goes back to the time when he was just an inquisitive 5‐year‐old, following his father C Sashikumar, a renowned ornithologist, on his ornithological expeditions. As he grew older, he combined his interest in wild‐life with his passion for film‐making to promote nature conservation. He now works at the Natural History New Zealand (NHNZ) company and Fortune theatre in Dunedin, New Zealand.  Kyriakos Stylianopoulos Kyriakos Stylianopoulos is a skilled cinematographer and a trained deep‐sea diver from Athens, Greece. Kyriakos has learnt to successfully combine the two to create magic on screen with his underwater film sequences. He now works as co‐director and cinematographer at a production house in Athens. 

  9. Shelter  by Raghu Gopalan, (INDIA 2010) 4 min (Animation) 

Film Synopsis The film tells the story of a man is in search of shelter from the heavy downpour. He finds protection under a tree. The need for more comfort leads him to carve a space within the tree trunk. Later, he carves a room, in order to be more comfortable. His family expands. He now has a wife and children. With them grows the need as also the desire for greater luxury. The home expands within the trunk. As it grows beyond the capacity of the tree, the shelter, finally, gives way. Once again, they are exposed to the vagaries fo nature. The family gets soaked in the rain, now deprived of a shelter. The film effectively conveys how our greed for materialistic comforts is destroying the natural world.  

Filmmaker’s Biography Raghu Gopalan was greatly interested in lines and colours as a child. He grew up to become an illustrator in a leading Malayalam daily. His profession exposed him to a huge universe waiting to be explored. These explorations took him to new frontiers and he ended up in a leading animation company in the capital city of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram.  Gopalan was amazed at the possibilities and opportunities that animation presented to him.  Gopalan is chief Visionary Officer and Creative Director of Vyga Animation Systems Pvt. Ltd. 

   

10. Land of Widows  by Aarti Shrivastava (INDIA 2011) 21 min Film Synopsis 

'Land of Widows" focuses on the unsustainable working conditions of mine workers in the state of Rajasthan, India. Set in the Bhilwara district of Rajasthan, this film captures the exploitation the workers have to go through on a daily basis to work in illegal mines a dollar a day. Blending investigative journalism with helplessness and dark humour, the film tells the stories of average sandstone miners victimised by corporate greed and political corruption. It examines how sandstone mining has affected local communities’ adn also people occupied with this occupation. The stories of struggle and visions of hope open a door to the complex issue that is threatening the future of mine workers and their families.  

Filmmaker’s Biography Aarti Shrivastava is a young emerging entrepreneur focussed on media for social change. She started her career as a news reporter and anchor for local community news network in Mumbai, bringing social, political and economic issues to larger audiences, working with CNBC. Her passion for cinema, arts and culture led her to create television shows around human stories and their emotions and aspirations. Shrivastava has covered and documented issues of poverty, illiteracy, unemployment and inhuman conditions that engulf Rajasthan and its mining communities, issues regarding water, continuing to dedicate her career to the cause and change of social infrastructures and support systems in these areas. She has worked with multinational organisations such as CNBC, World‐bank, UNICEF, BBC, World Bank, UNICEF, Indian National Congress and several others around the globe. 

  11. Public Service Announcements on the Protection of the Commons  by Amar Kanwar (INDIA 2011) 1 min  

Film Synopsis This short film is part of a series of seven pubilc service announcements to understand common property resources and the importance of protecting them in india. The emphasis is on understanding the need to live in harmony with our natural resources, and not merely see them as money‐spinning, commercial assets. This message: recognise communities like manganiyor falk musicions and thar desserts our commons.  

Filmmaker’s Biography Amar Kanwar is a Delhi‐based film‐maker. His films have been screened in several film festivals. He is recipient of the St Edvard Munch Award for Contemporary Art from Norway; an Honorary Doctorate in Fine Arts, Manine College of Art, USA; Golden Gate Award, San Francisco International Film Festival; Golden Conch, Mumbai International Film Festival; first prize, Torino Internation Film Festival, Italy; Jury's Award, Film South Asia, Nepa; Grand Prix at EnviroFilm, Slovak Republic; Golden Tree at the 1st National Environment and Wildlife Film Festival, Delhi. He has also participated in Documenta 11(2002) and Documenta 12 (2007), Kassel, Germany.

 

12. Back to the Roots  by Rishu Nigam (INDIA 2010) 46 min  

Film Synopsis India's Northeast has a rich heritage of sacred natural sites that have been preserved for generations because of the faith of local communities. Today, science is recognising these sites as rare hubs of bio‐diversity. The film captures the beautiful traditions of the Khasis of Meghalaya, the Meteis of Manipur and the Vaishnav monasteries of Assam, and brings to fore the ancient and increasingly fragile link between human cultures and biodiversity.  

Filmmaker’s Biography Rishu Nigam has been associated with TERI's film and television unit since 2001. As part of TERI, Nigam has spent several years producing documentaries on issues of sustainable development. Mostly set in India's countryside, they have brought to fore the challenges faced by marginalised communities and their resilience in coping with the business of life. She has also directed a series of films on sacred ecological traditions of India's tribal communities, including those in the central Himalayas, the Northeast, the Western Ghats and Rajasthan. Nigam is also associated with a children's quiz show on the environment, TERRAQUIZ, aired on National Geographic Channel. Her work has also involved guiding a small hill community in Mukteshwar, Uttarakhand to produce radio programmes for Kumaon Vani, TERI's community radio station.

Completion date: 2011 Runing time: 5:02 Country of origin: Japan Original program format: HDCAM  Director: Maya Yonesho  Synopsis : This is an animation made by two colleagues in Kyoto. After deciding the motifs that Kyoto is famous for, they drew in relay and each shot the film, with director Maya Yonesho working on the editing. Looking at what was drawn for each, the differences in illustration style gives flavour to the attractions.

Christos N.  Karakassis  is  a  Film Director,  Script Writer  and Producer. He was born in Athens. He studied Film‐Theatre‐TV Direction,  Information  Science  and  Music  and.  He  is  the founder  of  both  KOYINTA  Production  Company (www.kouinta‐production.gr) and KOYINTA Cultural Society. He has supervised,  technically supported or produced many 

audiovisual events, presentations, adverts, video art projects, festivals.  As  a  Producer‐Director  he  is  active  since  1992.  His  films  have  been  screened  in Greece and abroad. He is a member of Greek Directors' Guild and also a member of the Film Directors‐Producers Guild of Greece. He is a Founding Member of the Greek Documentary Network and of the DOCFRIENDS Artistic Movement. He is the Artistic Director of Athens Digital Short Film Festival in Athens (www.shortfilmfestival.gr).  

INTERNATIONAL JURY MEMBERS 2012  Mr. Nik J. Van‐Eckmann (Chairman) (South Africa‐Finland)  

More than 30 years experience in film and television production worldwide. Companies include:ORF Austria ‐ Malaysian Television ‐ ZDF Germany ‐ Channel 9 Peru ‐ NBC New York – RTL France ‐National Geographic Television and the BBC.  His first discipline is in Sound Design but has expertise as cameraman ‐ editor ‐ writer ‐ producer and director; other skills include: actor and narrator for television and the music industry. He has university degrees in Science, Education and the Arts and is currently researching, designing and developing new techniques for 

recording wildlife sound. This wealth of professional and academic knowledge means that he is in great demand as a lecturer, teaching the very young through to university level at establishments in Finland, Sweden, India and the UK. He has also been an important partner of Wildlife Vaasa Festival and the chairman of the festival’s International Jury.  

Ms. Ulrike Reetz (Germany)  Living  in  Hamburg  she  did  her  jobs  as  a  graphic  designer,  a  teacher,  a median  expert  on  a scientific experience about the use of films in schools. Later on she switched over to various TV production companies such as Studio Hamburg. Her job: production management. At least she succeeded in becoming a permanent part of the NDR Naturfilm team. As a freelancer now she is still  responsible  for entries  in Wildlife Film  Festivals worldwide. Since 2008  she  is  involved  in festivals  personally  as  for  example  she  has  been  a member  of  the  International  Jury  of  our festival in 2010. 

 Ms. Oksana Lazareva (Russia) 

Representing the new generation of filmmakers, Oksana studied five years at St. Petersburg‐State University of Culture and Arts and after graduation she has been working as a wildlife and environmental conservation film producer, editor and administrator from 2001(Documentary Film Studio "FILM‐TRANZIT"). Since 2005 she has been working at Studio "Nikola Film" editing full length and fictions movies. Since 2008 she works as film editor ‐ freelancer with different film studios (Svarog‐Afterburners Films (joint American‐Russian film production company), "Pushkin Pictures", ''Green Film" and others. She has been associated with our festival since 2004. 

 

Mr. Juhani Koivusaari (Finland) Phil.lic.(zoology), worked as a special researcher / for West Finland’s Regional Environment Centre in Vaasa. An old‐school biologist who has devoted his work and life in developing the conservation and studying of the white‐tailed sea eagle. He has published a lot of research material in his fields of speciality and he has written a book as well. In addition, he has produced a TV film about white‐tailed sea eagles together with his fellow researchers and filmmakers from Vaaasa making nature films in the Kvarken area. He has been granted scholarships in the study of environmental toxins threatening the life of the white‐tailed sea eagles. He has been associated with Wildlife Vaasa festival from the time of its conception in 2001, also a self made humorist?  

 

Ms Lena Karlsson (Finland) Representing the audience this year, Lena is our new International Jury member specialized in information graphics and technical illustration currently employed by the city of Vaasa. She started studying Arts during her upper secondary education and continued along that path to Kensington open College in London and later on at Kymenlaakson Opisto (College), deepening her skills in graphics design and finally ending up at the University of Lapland in Rovaniemi. Although photography was naturally more vital  during her studies, many aspects of film making were included as well . Having grown up alongside with modern media, Lena is no stranger to the 

development of audio‐visual communication dominating our culture today. She knows well media‐history and respects tradition but she's also excited about new styles and movements. To balance her career in graphics, Lena is also a wilderness guide and has worked as a tourist guide in Finland and abroad.
