As Christians, our life can only haveits proper direction if it is guided by the Word of God and if this Word islived accordingly. In the Old Testa-ment this guidance was madethrough the mediation of Moses and

has its center in the Ten Command-ments. In the New Testament, it ismediated by Jesus Christ. He doesthis through the Sermon on theMount. This did not replace the TenCommandments of the Old Testa-ment but rather deepens it.

In the Old Testament times, theJews were ordered by Moses to takethis word of God to their hearts. So,to say, to wear them on their wristsand foreheads. But some of themtook this injunction literally; thus,

the presence of phylacteries in theirwrists and foreheads. The troublewith this was that some Jews did notallow the word of God to sink deepinto their hearts. To wear phylacter-ies was easy but to live by the wordsthey contained wasn’t easy. Thispeople could be likened to the manwho built his house on the sand.

Jesus did his part by teaching us theproper “Way of Life”. By the way Helived his earthly life He gave us theexample of how it means in concrete

term. At the end of the Sermon onthe Mount, Jesus gave a stern warn-ing to His listeners against the dan-ger of failing to do so. The Kingdomof Heaven is reserved for those whoDO the will of the Father. It is only through this way that we can makethe teachings of Jesus the “rock foundation” of our life like that manwho built his house on the rock.

In the early days of the Church, St.Paul while he was in Rome, waitingfor his audience with the Emperorencountered almost the same prob-

lem. He had the same complaintconcerning the followers of the“New Way”. He told them that a

mere external observance of the law without the firm foundation of faithwas no security for salvation. Hewas not referring to faith as an in-tellectual assent to the divine rev-elation. The faith which St. Paulmeant is the total commitment tothe person of Jesus Christ in fulltrust and obedience.

Today, we are also challenged by Jesus to make our faith in Him asthe “rock foundation” of our lives.We are being asked by Him not tohave a convenient life but a securelife. It is easy and more convenientfor us to build our life on the shift-ing sands of compromise, excuseand pretense. We can find an excusefor anything we want to do by ad-justing our conscience to suit our ac-tions rather than directing our ac-tions according to the objectivemoral norms. We can say that wecan accept any forms of sacrificeGod demands from us as long asthese demands are not present re-alities.

How can we brave the storms of lifeif we are not built on firm founda-tion? How can we stand against thewinds that God may allow to buffetour life? What will be our attitude if we are facing a strong earthquakecaused by a loss of job and we arefacing a huge hospital bill? How canwe accept the unexpected death of our love one(s) or an accident thatrenders us or our loved ones debili-tated? Is our faith foundation firmenough to tell God, “Your will bedone!”

The time to prepare for the storm isnot during the height of its strengthbut during the lull before it comes.In the Mass we hear the word of God. We must then pray that thisword will penetrate our being. It isnot enough to have the name of Godin our lips. Let us make the will of God be the power to direct our lives.Now is the time to prepare for thefuture security by making the wordof God the “rock foundation” of ourlives.

CATHOLIC CHURCH

On Saturday, 19 February, the 2011 Annuario Pontificio [PapalYearbook] was presented to Benedict XVI by Cardinal TarcisioBertone, SDB, Secretary of State, and by Archbishop FernandoFiloni, Substitute of the Section for General Affairs of the Sec-retariat of State.

The new Yearbook was edited by Mons. Vittorio Formenti, Headof the Central Office of Church Statistics and by Prof. Enrico

Nenna and by other collaborators.The complex process of printing the text was supervised by Fr Pietro Migliasso, SDB, by Mr Antonio Maggiotto, SDB, and byMr Giuseppe Canesso, SDB, respectively General Director,Commercial Director and Technical Director of the Vatican Press.The book will shortly be on sale in bookshops.

The Holy Father thanked them for their tribute, and showedkeen interest in the information the Yearbook provides. He alsoasked them to convey his warm gratitude to all those who workedto produce the new edition of the Yearbook.

The book publishes certain changes that concern the life of theCatholic Church in the world from 2010. In this year the Popeestablished 10 new Dioceses, one Apostolic Exharchate andone Vicariate Apostolic; he raised one diocese to the rank of Metropolitan See, two Prelatures to the rank of Diocese, andtwo Prefectures and one Apostolic Administration to the rank of Vicariates Apostolic.

The statistical data which refer to the year 2009 provide a con-cise analysis of the main dynamics regarding the CatholicChurch in the world’s 2,956 ecclesiastical circumscriptions Bap-tized faithful increased from 1,166 million in 2008 to 1,181 in2009, with a clear increase of 15 million faithful: equivalent to1.3 percent.

The distribution of Catholics on the continents differs consider-ably from that of the population. America, with regard to its popu-lation, from 2008 to 2009 maintained a stable incidence out of the total on earth equivalent to 13.6 percent. In these two years,however, the percentage of Catholics rose to 49.4 percent of the world’s Catholic population.

In Asia the growth was from 10.6 to 10.7 percent, but it is con-siderably lower than that which the continent has with regard tothe world population (60.7 percent).

The percentage of the European population is three percent-age points less than that of America, but its incidence in theCatholic world is almost half that of the American countries (24percent). For the countries of Africa and Oceania the percent-age of the population out of the total is similiar to that of Catho-lics, (15.2 and 0.8 percent respectively.

The number of bishops in the world increased from 5.002 to5.065. from 2008 to 2009, with a 1.3 percent increase. Africa isthe most dynamic continent (1.8 percent) followed by Oceania(1.5 percent) while Asia (0.8 percent) and America (1.2 per-cent) are below the overall average. The increase in Europe isof 1.3 percent. The number of priests continued to grow steadilyin 2000, after a long period of disappointing results. The num-ber of diocesan and religious priests in the past ten years in-creased from 405.178 in 2000 to 410.593 in 2009 (or 1.36 per-cent world wide).

In particular, in 2009, priests increased by 0.34 percent in com-parison with 2008. This figure represents a decrease 0.08 per-cent of religious clergy, and the increase of 0.56 percent of thediocesan clergy. The percentage decrease concerned Europealone (0.82 percent for diocesan priests and 0.99 percent for religious), given that they have increased overall on the other continents. There has been a decline instead in the number of religious clergy everywhere except Asia and Africa.

Permanent deacons have increased by more than 2.5 percent,

from 37.203 in 2008 to 38.155 in 2009. The number of deaconsin Oceania and in Asia is rapidly increasing. In Oceania, wheredeacons do not yet account for one percent of the total, theyincreased by more than 19 percent, to a total of 346 in 2009.And in Asia they are registering an increase of 16 percent.

Deacons are also increasing in the areas where they are morenumerous. In America and in Europe, where about 98 percentof the total population lived in 2009, deacons have increased inthe past two years, respectively from 2.3 to 2.6 percent.

There has been a downward trend instead among professedwomen religious. In 2008 there were 739,068 in the world, andin 2009 their number had fallen to 729,371. The crisis is still feltdespite increases in Africa and Asia. The number of candidatesto the priesthood in the world has grown by 0.82 percent, from117,024 in 2008 to 117, 978 in 2009. Most of the increase maybe attributed to Asia and Africa, with growth rates of 2.39 and2.20 percent respectively. Europe and America have registereda decrease of respectively 1.64 percent and 0.17 percent in thesame period.
