III. The Division of Asia:
A.The British in India
1. The Sepoy Rebellion
-East India Co. = Brits had trading posts throughout India
-By 1857 = Brits controlled most of Ind.
- Sepoys (Indian Soldiers) – rebelled against Christianity
- Killed Rebellion = tightened grip on India
2. Indian Nationalism
- Brits built roads + RR + schools + irrigation
- Farmers told to grow cotton instead of wheat =
millions died
- 1947: gained indep. - Gandhi
B. China & the West
1. Unequal Treaties
- 1500 – 1800: China is isolated – Why?
- West trades Opium for Silk and Tea
- 1842: Opium Wars = Brits Win = Treaty of Nanking
- From treaty Britain got:- $- control of trade- Hong Kong
- Eur. + Japan also exploit China trading
2. Chinese Response
- Nationalism = but little unity
- Old ways vs. modern ways
- Boxers = attacked foreigners = western forces win
- Revolution of 1911
- people overthrow the dynasty
- China becomes a Republic
C. Japan
- 1857: U.S. Warships commanded by:Matthew Perry = demand trade
- Fearing war = Japan agrees to trade
- Samurai leaders adopt strategy:“Rich country, strong military”
- Japan = industrialized itself = no outside help
- Japan becomes an imperialist power = takes Korea as a colony
