The Senior Saturday Festival for 2016 has come and gone and what a
success it was. There was a great turnout of visitors to the event,
fantastic weather and wonderful food and entertainment. Thank you all
who participated and I hope you enjoyed the day. Fall is promising to bring plenty of excitement to the center. The last
quarterly dance was a complete hit with a sold out crowd. 200 dancers
enjoyed the evening and ambiance of the room. Later this month on
October 29th will be the Annual Senior Surf Competition adjacent to the
pier. Come on down and cheer on the competitors as they brave the
waves to strut their stuff. At the end of the month will be the Big Band
Swing Dance on Monday October 24th. Grab your dancing shoes or
simply come to enjoy the music. Your Huntington Beach Council on Aging is a 501 c 3 Charitable

There is just one week until Kate
Mercer’s (Charlotte Rampling)
45th wedding anniversary and the
planning for the party is going well.
But then a letter arrives for her husband
(Tom Courtenay). The body of his first
love has been discovered, frozen and
preserved in the icy glaciers of the Swiss Alps. By the
time the party is upon them, five days later, there may
not be a marriage left to celebrate. 95 minutes. Rated
R for language and brief sexuality.
Set in the 1790’s, Love and
Friendship centers on beautiful
widow Lady Susan Vernon, (Kate
Beckinsale), who has come to her
in-laws estate to wait out rumors in polite
society about her dalliances. Whilst there,
she decides to secure a husband for herself
and her reluctant debutante daughter, Frederica
(Morfydd Clark). 92 minutes. Rated PG for some
thematic elements.
Marnie Minervini (Susan Sarandon),
recently widowed, has relocated
from Jersey to LA to be near her
daughter Lori (Rose Byrne), a
successful but still single screenwriter, to
smother her with motherly love. When the
smothering gets to be too much for Lori,
Marnie finds ways to channel her eternal
optimism and forceful generosity to change the lives
of others and find a new purpose in life. 100 minutes.
Rated PG-13 for brief drug content.
Genius chronicles the story and
eventual friendship of writer
Thomas Wolfe (Jude Law) and editor Max
Perkins (Colin Firth) as they work together
to publish Wolf’s epic novel “Look
Homeward Angel”. The two toil for years
on end to take Wolfe’s 5,000 page novel
and reduce it by over 90,000 words and turn it into a
best seller. 104 minutes. Rated PG-13 for some
thematic elements and suggestive content.

Greetings –
The numbers are astounding and it is official - the Senior Center in Central
Park is busy and an outstanding success! Since we opened, over 6,000 (Six
Thousand!) individuals have signed up for MySeniorCenter, our official
tracking software that lets us know how many people are using the center.
There have been approximately 600 sign ups in the fitness center, along with
hundreds of personal training appointments. We have had over 200 people
submit volunteer applications, and events such as Big Band Night, and
Dancing under the Stars have attracted great numbers of interested fans!
There is also a wonderful Wednesday walkers group that is receiving great
raves from everyone! Thanks to all who have been so patient, change is not
easy, and the transition from a quiet little senior center on the corner to a
bustling loud senior center has been quite the ride. We continue to get many
requests for new card games and other activities for the Game Room, as well
as presenting new lectures, screenings and workshops from our stakeholders.
A special thank you to the vendors and sponsors of Senior Saturday – all
who attended had a wonderful time. Both vendors and seniors found the
weather beautiful, and the event to be the best in years. Coming up in
October, please check out our special Saturday line dance event, as described
on the front cover. If you are over 50 and you surf, you should be riding the
waves in our Surfing Invitational on Saturday,
October 29. If Big Bands are your thing, and swing
dancing is your style, I hope to see you on the 24th,
our 4th Monday dance night. And what is October
without a Halloween luncheon – on Halloween!
As always, see you at the Movies!

Training Tip
Studies have shown that 10 minutes of cardiovascular
exercise should be the minimum goal for optimal benefit.
Also, performing three intermittent sessions of 10
minutes on a bike or treadmill is exactly the same as
doing one session for 30 minutes straight! So take your
time and try to do two to three 10 minute sessions of car-
diovascular exercise throughout the day.
Coordinator’s Corner Happy October everyone! As we transition into
the fall months I want to encourage you all to
maintain a healthy & active lifestyle. This time of
year it becomes more difficult to avoid those
sweet treats. Remember that the goal should
always be to treat yourself in moderation. Be especially
diligent and disciplined with your physical activity
routines and there’s absolutely no harm in indulging once
in a while this fall.
On Wednesday, October 12th we will be participating in
the Senior Citizens Advisory Council’s “Walk, Jog or
Bike Challenge”. I’m encouraging all of the wellness
members to allocate time that day to exercise and record
your distances. Let’s use the Wellness Pavilion’s bikes
and treadmills to promote community health and active
aging. Join the movement!

Broaden your Horizon
Kathy, a long-time front desk volunteer now
Assistant Volunteer Coordinator, joined Food
Distribution last month to learn the ropes. She was
amazed to learn how the canned goods got into the
bags that she had handed out from the front counter
each month. She joined the assembly line of
volunteers who open the cases of non-perishables
and pack one of each of 14 different items into the
200 individual bags that are given monthly to low
income residents. She had a great time with a great
group of volunteers and learned something new
about the center. If she can learn something new
after nine years, so can you.
If you are currently volunteering and are
interested in trying something new to give yourself
a greater perspective of the services we offer, you
are welcome to sign-up for a ride-a-long with
Meals or Transportation, shadow a front desk
volunteer, serve lunch, attend an HBCOA board
meeting, help with Outlook Assembly, Bingo, and
Food Distribution. There is no-obligation or long
term commitment. Just a look-see.
Kathy was just going to help once in case I
ever needed her to cover for me. But she had so
much fun, she plans to help every month. You
might find something new and fun to do too!
