PASTOR’S NOTES: In Jesus’ parable, he says that the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who hires laborers at different times of the day. He gives them the same compensation, not because they deserved it, but because he was generous. No one is more generous than God. If God wants to open the kingdom to one who repents at the end of a wicked life, we are to rejoice that we will have one more companion in heaven.

Reflection Questions for the Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary TimeWhen have you received great, undeserved generosity? Where/with whom are you challenged to greater generosity? How will I stop acting like a self-appointed judge of “latecomers” and begin serving as a member of God’s welcome wagon?

KNOW A SAINT: St. Matthew (Sept. 21) Little is known about St. Matthew, except that he was the son of Alpheus, and he was likely born in Galilee. He worked as a tax collector, which was a hated profession during the time of Christ. According to the Gospel, Matthew was working at a collection booth in Capernaum when Christ came to him and asked, "Follow me." With this simple call, Matthew became a disciple of Christ. From Matthew we know of the many doings of Christ and the message Christ spread of salvation for all people who come to God through Him. The Gospel account of Matthew tells the same story as that found in the other three Gospels, so scholars are certain of its authenticity. His book is the first of the four Gospels in the New Testament. Many years following the death of Christ, around 41 and 50 AD, Matthew wrote his gospel account. He wrote the book in Aramaic in the hope that his account would convince his fellow people that Jesus was the Messiah and that His kingdom had been fulfilled in a spiritual way. It was an important message at a time when almost everyone was expecting the return of a militant messiah brandishing a sword. It is thought he departed for other lands to escape persecution sometime after 42 AD. According to various legends he fled to Parthia and Persia, or Ethiopia. Nothing is recorded of Matthew's passing. We do not know how he died, if his death was natural or if he was martyred. Matthew is often depicted with one of the four living creatures of Revelation 4:7, which reads, "The first living creature was like a lion, the second like a bull, the third living creature had a human face, and the fourth living creature was like a flying eagle." Matthew was a tax collector and is therefore the patron saint of bankers. The Church established St. Matthew's feast day as September 21.

October is “Respect Life Month”, and Next Sunday, October 1st is “Respect Life Sunday”.   “We are called to show mercy, because mercy has first been shown to us”, is Pope Francis’ call to us to care for and respect God’s precious gift of all human life – from conception to natural death.   During October especially, let us offer prayers and fasting for an end to abortion, and take a stand to let our voices be heard in opposition to abortion, assisted suicide, and euthanasia.   God is on the move in the prolife movement!   This fall 40 Days for Life, a peaceful movement dedicated to prayerful witness outside of abortion facilities, will again be launching their campaign, in an effort to unite Christians in this time of crisis in our country, holding 40 Days for Life vigils all across the nation and around

the world, from September 27th to November 5th.  We are invited to participate in the local campaign held in Mankato, MN.   Volunteers who are able to sacrifice time to this lifesaving cause, please do so!  You are God’s hands and feet!  Visit www.40daysforlife.com/mankato to get involved, come to events, and most importantly, sign up for a time to come and pray!    Our Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (CCW) strongly supports this campaign.   You may participate by daily prayers for life, praying the rosary, fasting (giving up something of your choice), or by joining in the peaceful, prayerful presence at abortion facilities and Planned Parenthood clinics (the nation’s largest abortion provider).  A group from Gibbon will be traveling to Mankato to participate in the prayer campaign there on  Thursday , October 5th, leaving from St. Willibrord’s at 9 a.m. .   Anyone is welcome to ride along – please contact Berny Berger, St. Willibrord’s CCW president, if you can join us!    (507-834-6321)

St. Francis de Sales 75 th Anniversary : Letters to current St. Francis parishioners were mailed last week. Please, take time to sign up to help on a committee! (Sign-up sheets are hanging in hall across from the coat rack.) Invitations will soon be sent to former priests. As a parish, it will be our task to contact former parishioners about our celebration, as it would be impossible to send out invitations to all former parishioners. Meal Tickets will also be for sale soon! We will be promoting the celebration in a variety of ways including the newspaper, information to community churches, facebook, The Prairie Catholic, etc., but word of the mouth and personal invitation is always the best! Individual Committees should be meeting and began working out their tasks! Plan to come to the Hot Dish Supper after the 5:00 pm Mass at St. Francis on Saturday October 7th, 2017, for an update of the various committees! Questions: Call Pam Osborne 320-583-5206.

WANTED: Historical Items/Photos for 75 th Anniversary : PLEASE look through your photographs, especially if you have any older ones, for any photos of past confirmations, baptisms, weddings, photos of past priests/parishioners, parish celebrations, church buildings, etc. If you have a photo to share, please label the back with the name of the event, people in photo, date/year if known, and with your name, so the photo can be returned to you. Put your photo in an envelope labeled “Historical Photo, Please give to Dave/Lori Schauer or Pam Osborne,” and put it in the collection basket. Other historical memorabilia is also welcome, such as old newspaper articles, old church programs or worship aids, or any other item you would like to share. All items will be returned to you, so please label item in some way, unless you do not wish it returned. Time will go fast, so don’t delay too long!
