The heat is on between PDEA, ex-DDB execA WORD war had just

erupted in the country’s twoanti-drug agencies.

Philippine Drug Enforce-ment Agency (PDEA) DirectorGeneral Dionisio Santiago toldformer Dangerous Drugs Boardvice-chairman Clarence PaulOaminal to keep his mouth shutand end his nonsense tiradeson tons of cocaine discoveredin December last year in theseashores of Eastern Samar.

Santiago blew his topagainst Oaminal for talking toomuch on missing tons of seizedcocaine which blemished thereputation of PDEA.

“Kanya-kanyang expertise‘yan. Hindi naman siya opera-

tor. Manahimik na lang siya.Huwag na siyangmakisawsaw,” said Santiagoclaiming that PDEA is theagency vested with anti drugoperations.

He added that Oaminal wasjust sour-graping after he wassacked from DDB last month.

“Dapat magpasalamat siyadahil sa pinagbigyan siyangmaka-pwesto sa gobyerno.‘Wag niyang bastusin angmga kasamahan na nasaserbisyo pa rin,” claimedSantiago who assured the pub-lic that the controversy will besettled soon for the Chinesegovernment, United StatesDrug Enforcement Agency

(USDEA) and PDEA are al-ready probing the disappear-ance of tons of seized cocaine.

Santiago was further an-gered by Oaminal for claimingthat the missing cocaine isnow on sale in the streets ofCebu.

He, however, admitted thatsome 2,000 kilos of cocainewere discovered in Samar, butonly 400 kilos were surren-dered to PDEA.

On the other hand, SecretaryAntonio “Bebot” A. Villar Jr.resounded the claim of Santiagosaying that DDB is just a policymaking body and PDEA is theagency empowered to operateagainst prohibited drugs.

Di nanagpaliguy-ligoy ang paring naturan sa kanyang nagingtugon na isang mariing – white lie o red lie, it’s still a lie!

ANTI-LAND GRABBING PROTESTMembers of the Asian Peasant Coalition troop to A. Roces Bridge in Manila to protest global land-grabbing. MARVIN BUSTOS

MATHAY: I’M NOT WITHDRAWINGQUEZON City mayoralty candidate

Mel Mathay, Jr. has slammed the blackpropaganda being hurled against himby his opponents and declared that hewould never withdraw from the race.

“Speculations that I am withdraw-ing from the race for the mayoralty ofQuezon City are not true. These arepart of a black propaganda campaignbeing waged against me by my oppo-nents,” Mathay said.

The former three-term mayor is run-ning as an independent.

Mathay said results of several sur-

veys, both privately commissionedand independent, show him to be atsolid second position behind ViceMayor Herbert Bautista.

“While we denounce the black pro-paganda against us, we assure thepeople of Quezon City that we shallconduct a campaign of principles andissues. We shall bring our platformof hope and our promise of progressto the people of the city,” he said.

“Quezon City is facing serious prob-lems. What the city and the peopleneed are not lies and mudslinging but

real solutions and genuine leader-ship,” Mathay explained.

Radio reports earlier this week al-leged that Mathay was supposedlywithdrawing from the race for theQuezon City mayoralty.

“These rumors are being spreadto try to confuse the people. They willnot work because the people ofQuezon City know better. My oppo-nents might be in for a rude surprisewhen they find out on May 10 thatQuezon City voters will reject thiskind of politics,” Mathay said.

THE Civil ServiceCommission reiterated itsreminder for all incum-bent government officialsand employees to submittheir Statements of Assets,Liabilities and Net Worth(SALN) before April 30.

CSC Chairman Fran-cisco Duque III cautionedofficials and employeesnot to overlook the impor-tance of filing the SALN,which he said is part oftheir “sworn duty to servethe public with utmosttransparency and ac-countability."

The CSC chief said theSALN is made “underoath," and reminded of-ficials and employeesthat “falsification of in-formation or failure tosupply the required datamay be subject to disci-plinary or criminal actionunder Republic Act6713 . "

Under RA 6713, allthose working in govern-ment are required to filetheir SALN yearly regard-less of their position.

THE Philippine Federation of Bakers AssociationInc. (PFBAI) appealed on Sunday to Department ofHealth (DOH) and Bureau of Food and Drugs (BFAD)to issue at once an advisory whether the public shouldconsume Turkish flour or not.

Speaking at the Balitaan sa Tinapayan news fo-rum held in Sampaloc, Manila on Sunday, LucitoChavez, vice president if PFBAI, said there is needfor the DOH and BFAD to issue public advisory assoon as possible so the bakers would know whetherit is safe to use flour from Turkey or not in makingbread.

He said the issue matters for bakers themselvesbecause flour is the main ingredients in making bread.

He said there is a possibility that the issue onTurkish flour could be a “business strategy” so thegroup asked the DOH and the BFAD to give theircomment or stand regarding the issue.

According to Chavez, bakers preferred using Turk-ish flour because the government issued no warn-ing on it and that the imported flours are cheaper byP100 to P200 as compared to local flour.

Earlier, the DOH said samples of flour from Tur-key were sent for analysis to the Food and DrugsAdministration following media reports that theflours are potentially harmful to consumers’ health.

Inocentes justifies Metro greeningMETROPOLITAN Manila Development Author-

ity (MMDA) Chairman Oscar Inocentes defended the“greening’ of Metro Manila, noting it is the agency’sadvocacy of creating a greener environment and makeit a way of life for residents of the metropolis.

Inocentes reiterated the said move was not intendedto boost the campaign of administration presiden-tial candidate Gilberto Teodoro, Jr.

“Green is cool and refreshing to the eyes andsymbolizes vigor. It is just a mere coincidence thatit is also the campaign color of Gibo (Teodoro),” hesaid.

The MMDA chief explained that the Go GreenMetro project is in accordance with President GloriaMacapagal-Arroyo’s policy on “Green Philippines”.

He appealed to the public to look beyond the colorgreen and instead focus on what it truly signifies, which is caring for Mother Nature.

I“Our vision is to see a highly progressive me-tropolis with a competitive standard of living,” hesaid.

Villar tells rivals:Undergo psycho test

NACIONALISTA Party standard-bearer Sen.Manny Villar has challenged not only strongest ri-val Liberal Party standard bearer Benigno “Noynoy”Aquino III but all presidential and vice presidentialcandidates in next month’s elections to submit them-selves to a comprehensive physical and mental ex-amination to ascertain their fitness to occupy the high-est offices of the land.

The multi-billionaire said he has no problem un-dergoing a battery of psychological and physical tests.

“Noynoy cannot hide behind his claim to privacybecause the mental state of anyone who aspires to bePresident or Vice President is a matter of public con-cern,” Villar said.

“There’s a far more dangerous scenario than theblind leading the blind, and that is for a mentallychallenged person to lead a nation of millions,” saidVillar.

However, Villar claimed his party has nothing todo with the issue regarding the psychological testconducted on Aquino by the Department of Psychologyof Ateneo de Manila in 1996. Ateneo de Manila de-nied the authenticity of the report, saying Aquinodid not undergo psychiatric and psychological testsin their department. Andres Garcia

ASTRAL Productions, a new adventurous independentoutfit, has given young filmmaker Adolfo Alix, Jr. a respitefrom the real stories he has been churning out since hemade his directorial debut via Cinemalaya’s “Donsol,”which was followed by his acclaimed films “Kadin,”“Tambolista,” “Manila,” "Daybreak," and “Adela” to namea few. Unknown to many, Alix is also one of the writers ofthe smash comedy hit “D’Anothers” starring VhongNavarro. For a change, Alix now treats you to a screwballcomedy where anything goes and nothing is predictable.

“D’Survivors” is, as the title suggests, a take on thepopular reality show of adventurous, young people putin man-made survival and matter-of-life-and-death situa-tions and challenges to test one’s mettle, physical strength, human disposition and character. Interestingly, the presentmovie was shot in the very same islands where the “Sur-vivor” of other franchise countries are shot- in the pristineCaramoan Islands, CamSur.

On their way to Babuyan Island for a pictorial, a groupof models finally finds themselves stranded in an unknownisland. Chaos reigns as they try to survive there alongwith the other survivors.

The current spoof boasts of a breath-taking locale, aparadise island of blue waters, white sands and lush greenvegetations; and a handful of beautiful people, mostlysupermodels, and talented comedians, who all let theirhair down, so-to-speak, and came up with a real-funnyrib tickler.

Brazilian heartthrobs Akihiro Sato, Daniel Matsunaga,Fabio Ide with Pinoy hotties Rocky Salumbides, LemuelPelayo, Don Mendoza, Jubail Andres, Aaron Tuiza, andKerbie Zamora star with newcomer Darlene Anderson andwith brilliant support from seasoned comedians K Brosas,Divine Tetay, theater veteran Marife Necessito and com-edy royalty Evelyn Vargas, who’s making her comeback.

When I have asked suffering people, “Who helpedyou?” not one person has mentioned a PhD from aprestigious seminary or a famous philosopher. All ofus have the same capacity to help those who hurt.

No one can package or bottle the “appropriate”response to suffering. If you go to the sufferers them-selves, some will recall a friend who cheerily helpeddistract them from their illness. Others think such anapproach insulting. Some want honest, straightfor-ward talk; others find such discussion unbearablydepressing.

There is no magic cure for a person in pain. Mainly, such a person needs love, for love instinctively detectswhat is needed. Jean Vanier, who founded the L’Archemovement for the developmentally disabled, says:“Wounded people who have been broken by sufferingand sickness ask for only one thing: a heart that lovesand commits itself to them, a heart full of hope forthem.”

Such a love may be painful for us. But real love, the apostle Paul reminds us, “Bears all things, believesall things, hopes all things, endures all things” (1 Cor.13:7).

As is so often His pattern, God uses very ordinarypeople to bring about His healing. Those who sufferdon’t need our knowledge and wisdom, they need ourlove. — Philip Yancey

Margarito could be next for PacquiaoTOP Rank Promotions big boss Bob Arum

said a fight between the Filipino boxing iconManny Pacquiao and Mexican AntonioMargarito is a more realistic possibility thanthe eagerly awaited bout with FloydMayweather Jr.

Arum recently said with all the obstaclesin the way of a mega fight with Mayweather,a fight with Margarito would make moresense. Arum went on to say “Margarito de-serves the fight with Pacquiao.”

But the blunder stamped on the foreheadof Margarito and trainer Javier Capetillo, whose licenses revoked in February 2009 bythe Nevada State Athletic Commission(NSAC) a few weeks after it was discoveredthat Margarito used “loaded” hand wraps, still hound the boxing scene.

Margarito, when he fought Shane Mosleyin his first defense of the WBA welterweighttitle, had been found that his hand wraps

had been coated in a substance resemblingplaster.

Margarito is due to make his return to thering on May 8th after a year-long suspen-sion against Roberto Garcia at Aguacalientes,Mexico. Many insiders have different opin-ions on Margarito’s return to the sport; talkof a fight with Pacquiao will only fuel thedebate.

“I love to get that fight (with Pacquiao). Ithink everybody’s talking about that. It’s agreat possibility. We’re both with Top Rankso the possibility is always there,” SaidMargarito

If negotiations to secure a Mayweather fightbreak down, then Andre Berto, 26, must beconsidered next in line. The undefeatedAmerican currently holds the WBC welter-weight strap and currently resides just be-low the aforementioned in any rankings thatmean anything.

THE famous “arnis,” the traditional Fili-pino martial art, will be given top honors inthis year ’s staging of the Palarong Pambansa, the country’s largest youth sports event heldannually under the watch of the Departmentof Education (DepEd).

According to DepEd spokesperson andAssistant Secretary Jonathan Malaya, Repub-lic Act No. 9850 has declared “arnis” as thecountry’s national martial art and sport.

President Arroyo signed the Arnis Lawon Dec. 11, 2009, under which arnis will beone of the sports to be played annually inthe Palarong Pambansa.

The law also mandates that arnis be in-cluded in the school sports curriculum, un-like before when arnis was only offered in afew schools as an elective physical educa-tion subject.

“Actually, arnis has been in the roster ofgames of the Palaro for the past two years, but this time it’s different because it’s goingto be played as the national martial art andsport so our school sports officials are reallypushing for it,” said Malaya.
