In photography, reality is revealed through reversed colors, as if the photographic process which changes the reality could make it clearer. That’s probably what gives the photographic art its strength: it shows reality in a very efficient way.

Mainly dedicated to documentary photography, the Yangon Photo Festival (YPF) celebrates in 2014 its sixth anniversary (8thJanuary – 28thFebruary 2014). The Embassy of France which strongly supports this festival organized by the French Cultural Center (Institut français de Birmanie) in partnership with International Media Support (IMS) is very grateful to Daw Aung San Suu Kyi for having accepted to be the patron of the festival for the third year in a row. We are very honored by her presence during the Photo Night as the president of the Grand Jury that will select the best photo essays of the year.

TheYPF offers a unique window in Yangon on the work of internationally acclaimed artists as well as Myanmar photographers. This year’s theme is “METTA, THE PATH TO PEACE”. “METTA” induces notions such as “Nyein Chan” (Peace), “Karuna” (Compassion) and “Mudita” (Joy) which have a specific echo in present Myanmar.

Thanks to the training they received during previous festivals, several former students be-came professionals. Some of them have been trained in Arles (France), often described by ar-tists and amateurs as the “world capital of photography”. The transfer of knowledge through free trainings in France and Myanmar is the core of our cooperation strategy based on mutual understanding. This year former students will organize their own exhibition and workshops for the young generation.

The YPF was made possible thanks to the implication of both public and private institutions and of individuals who are eager to support young talents in Myanmar. Myanmar photographers will compete for the Best Photo-Essay Award of the Year.

Their works will be screened in the gardens of Institut Français de Birmanie in front of the public and

a jury presided by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.

Prizes worth a total of 100 lakhssuch as professional Canon cameras and photo workshops in France

If Metta rarely appears in their work, photographers sometimes pay with their life their ef-forts to testify about its antithesis: prejudice, intolerance and cruelty. The famous French war photographer Gilles Caron was only 30 when killed by the Khmer Rouge in 1970 after reporting the horror of the battlefields in Indochina, Israel and Biafra. His scrapbook reflects how exceptional his short career was. In contemporary Myanmar, the new generation of photo-journalists feel that it is their duty to tell the stories of intolerance and discrimination that led to the death of hundreds of innocents. Soe Zeya Tun and Minzayar courageously reported on the Rakhine State and Meyktila communal riots and massacres. Their work shows that Metta is the only path to Peace. Today Syria is one of the conflicts where inhumanity seems to be the rule. “What is really terrifying there, says war photographer Marc Roussel, more than in Lybia or even in Afghanis-tan, it is the feeling of a death lottery. Anything can happen, any time, because the conflict opposes multiple parties and leads to barbary.” Yet, Roussel was able to photograph a strong story in Aleppo of compassion inside a hell hole. This is the story of Jacques Bérès, a 72 year old french surgeon risking his life under the bombs by doing surgery and saving lives of the injured rebel fighters.

METTA, THE PATH TO PEACE

The Buddhist notion of Metta - loving kindness - is central in Myanmar culture. For photojournalists and documentary photographers, Met-ta is certainly one of the most subtle and difficult concept to convey. This is why the exhibit of Italian photographer Fausto Podavini about the fight of a loving wife against her husband’s Alzheimer’s disease is particularly poignant. At 72, French surgeon Jacques Bérès still spends all his free time trying to save lives while risking his own under the bombshells. Photographer Marc Roussel accompanied him clandestinely in the besieged Syrian city of Aleppo. “I want to be useful,” simply says this compassionate atheist who is a co-foun-der of the humanitarian NGOs Méde-cins Sans Frontières and Médecins Du Monde.

During a three-month residence at the French National School of Photography, Mayco Nai has continued her work on multi-ethnic couples. She photographed love and friendship in La Roquette, an old quarter of Arles where Gypsies mix with North African immigrants and a new population of young professionals and artists.

Gilles Caron was only 30 years-old when he disappeared in Cambodia in a zone controlled by Khmer Rouge guerillas. Nevertheless, his short five-year career spent covering wars in the Middle East, Indochina and Africa for the famous Gamma Photo Agency produced enough remarkable work to engrave his name at the pinnacle of photojournalism.

In the classic Chinese tradition, the Paper Men are dressed up as ancient scholars to provide company to the deceased in their afterlife. Yan Changjiang imagines a metaphorical story of Paper Men in the world of the living. When discovered by locals, discrimination against the Paper Men leads to conflict.

Photographer Yan Changjiang was born in Wuhan on the banks of the Yangtze River, his father named him after this river which is one of Asia’s longest waterways. This explains partly the special bond he has with the river and as soon the Three Gorges Dam began displacing people and raising wa-ter level, Changjiang started his photographic project. From 2002 until today, he has completed three series of work, in the last series, he pays tribute to all the lost souls and cultural relics buried under 175 meters of water.

The best works produced during the workshop will be shown to the public and jury presided by Daw Aung San Suu Kyi on February 15 during the Yangon Photo Night. Prizes worth 100 lakhs will be awarded.Candidates will be selected on 27-28 January based on their motivation and ideas for the photo-essays (bring your portfolio on USB key).

Bachelot - Caron workshop

In EnglishThe daughter of famous war photographer Gilles Caron, Marjolaine, will be at the Ins-titut français de Birmanie during the festival to present an exhibit about her father’s life. She and her husband Louis Bachelot are ce-lebrated artists (http://www.bachelotcaron.fr). They get their inspiration from criminal cases found in the news. Like in a movie, they stage crime scenes in order to photo-graph them.
