Yokai 妖怪

Yokai are a class of supernatural beings found in Japan and neighboring lands. The word itself means “out-of-this-world weird”. Most are the result of magical mutations – ordinary beings who have wandered too far into the realm of spirit magic. Others have no obvious origin.

Ashinaga-tenaga 足長手長

Ashinaga-tenaga is a type of Yokai with two bodies. The Ashinaga body has elongated legs (6m), while the Tenaga body has elongated arms (9m). They are always found together, unless one of the bodies has been killed. In this case, it is not uncommon for the other body to go mad with grief.

Ashinaga-tenaga are often found on seashores or near rivers, where they use their strange bodies to fish. The Tenaga body stands on the Ashinaga body's shoulders, then snares fish with its remarkable arms.

One of the pair is male, the other is female. They reproduce by having twins. Arranged marriages are the norm. During marriage, one part of a duo is switched with the corresponding part of another duo, a ceremony that seems to involve much emotional hardship.

Bakeneko 化け猫

Bakeneko are magical cats with split tales. Cats become Bakeneko when they reach 100 years of age of Their primary supernatural ability involves their appetites. Bakeneko have limitless stomachs, capable of digesting anything they can chew up and swallow. A Bakeneko can eat its body weight in 15 minutes, meaning they can easily eat a human sized body overnight.

Bakeneko have the ability to animate Zombies by jumping over fresh corpses. They can only have one such servant at a time and must control its movements through ritualized dance.

Though they are feared, not all Bakeneko are evil. They often repay kind deeds and are very loyal.

Bakeneko walk on their hind-legs, speak clearly and can jump great distances in their feline form, and assume human form at will. Those who grow to larger sizes (from Lynx to Tiger) are called Nekomata ( 猫股 ).

Enenra 煙々羅

Enenra are the ghosts of people who die in magical fires. If their bodies are consumed instantaneously, their spirits transfer to the smoke and ashes.

If an Enenra grapples an opponent, he suffers damage via smoke inhalation. Otherwise they have no ability to manipulate the material world.

Enenra often take human form, and they can talk. Unfortunately, most have been driven mad by their incinerations and spend their lives tormenting the embodied.

Enenra created from magical accidents, rather than attacks, tend to be more sanguine and approachable, even to the point of continuing their magical researches.

Futakuchi-onna 二口女

Futakuchi-onna are women who have a second mouth on the back of their neck, usually hidden by hair. Their hair is animate, capable of grabbing food and pulling it into their second mouth.

Most Futakuchi-onna are created when miserly husbands do not give their wives enough to eat. The second mouth will appear, often screaming obscenities that the wife is too polite to utter, then her hair will take on a life of its own and start shoveling food into the newly formed mouth.

Because they are feared by mainstream society, most Futakuchi-onna hide their supernatural features and try to live a normal life.

Over time, the Futakuchi-onna's hair will become more and more powerful. For every hundred years of life, another strand will animate. It is possible to attach barbs to the braids so that they can deal out real damage. At this point, they are properly refereed to as Harionago 針女子, and are predators who ensnare and kill beautiful young men.

Hone-bito 骨人

Hone-bito are living vampires that suck the life force from their victims. In their natural form they appear as severely emaciated individuals, but can shape shift into the form of attractive humans.

Even in human form, they suck the life out of nearby vegetation, causing it to wilt and die in a short period of time.

Hone-bito are created when a person suffers extremes of neglect or grief. They are tragic creatures, even if they are extraordinarily dangerous.

Jurogumo 絡新婦

Jurogumo are a type of spider spirit that has a spiritual relationship with a waterfall much as as Dryad does with her Tree. Their homes are behind the waterfall and can only be reached with their special magic.

Jurogumo are very lonely, but retain a spider's strange ideas of predatory love.

Some Jurogumo are known for protecting people how fall into their waterfalls or the pools beneath. Shrines are built at such places, and the priests who attend them may be the lovers of the Jurogumo.

Kappa 河童

Kappa are Yokai that resemble humanoid turtles. Their coloration ranges from yellow to blue, with scaly skin and webbed hands with short fingers. They have beaks and soft carapace on their backs. They stand about 1.5m.

The most distinctive feature of a Kappa is the saru, a bowl-like indentation on the top of its head. If all the water spills from the saru, the Kappa will be paralyzed and may even die.

Kappa behavior ranges from crude pranks to the truly malevolent. They are particularly fond of drowning domestic animals. On the other hand, they are also renown for their extraordinary politeness. The basic trick for dealing with a potentially dangerous Kappa is to bow deeply. The Kappa will be compelled to bow just as deeply, potentially spilling his saru. Of course, most Kappa wear caps atop their saru...

Some Kappa are openly benevolent. They are known to help farmers with their irrigation and are known to make gifts of fresh fish to hungry travelers.

Kappa may be male or female, though there are no distinguishing characteristics. Their young spend their first 100 years as ordinary turtles.

Kappa do not like sesame or ginger, but have a well known fondness for cucumbers.

Kamaitachi 鎌鼬

Kamaitachi are three magical weasels that share a single consciousness. They have wickedly sharp claws and a taste for blood. The first body attacks with a ice storm, the second with a fire bolt and the third with lightening.

Despite their taste for blood, they have something of a conscious. After knocking a victim unconscious and drinking some of his blood, they will often bind their victim's wounds.

Kamaitachi can come together and take on a human form. Sometimes Kamaitachi live openly as warriors, but they are more often bandits.

Kiyohime 清姫

Kiyohime are people (traditionally women), who turn into fire-breathing snake monsters in moments of extreme stress. They are particularly provoked by jealousy. The change is uncontrollable, and the monstrous form will attack the source of the distress mercilessly.

Nue 鵺

Nue are demonic chimeras. They have the bodies of raccoon dogs, limbs of tigers, heads of monkeys and snakes for tails.

Nue can transform into black smoke. In this form they can inflict diseases on their victims.

Nue are intelligent monsters – in fact, they are noted for their cunning. They love inflicting harm, especially in the high and mighty.

Nuppeppo

A Nuppeppo is an amorphous ball of stinking flesh that rolls through towns, causing a huge inconvenience to everyone. They are very lonely creatures and kind-hearted. They can speak, but their speech is slurred and very difficult to interpret.

Nuppeppo are notoriously wealthy, carrying their money in an interior vacuole. They have been known to pay generously for the comforts of a bath house.

Nuppeppo are not defenseless. If attacked, they will attempt to roll on top of their attacker, with similar effects as a constriction attack.

Rokurokubi 轆轤首

Rokurokubi are people who have been cursed for their obsessive interest in other people's lives. Mostly they are supernatural peeping toms.

A Rokurokubi's neck can stretch to truly extraordinary lengths. Most Rokurokubi can successfully conceal their supernatural nature, so long as they stay single. Unfortunately, they give themselves away while they sleep.

Samebito 鮫人

Samebito are the shark-men that serve the Dragon Kings of the Sea. They have inky black skin, faces like a demon, eyes green as emeralds, and a beard a dragon. Contrary to their ferocious appearance, most are mild mannered, even gentle.

Samebito need to fully immerse themselves in water at least once per day, but this need not be saltwater.

Samebito cry blood tears, and when their tears strike the earth they become rubies. They are fully aware of this special power and will not allow it to be exploited. Every minute of crying produces $500 worth of teardrop shaped gems.

Satori 覚

Satori (which means “consciousness”) are, to put it succinctly, psychic sasquatches. They live in remote mountain ranges, emerging from their forests only to mock travelers. They have the fantastically annoying habit of using their mind reading ability to speak other people's thoughts aloud. Otherwise they are mostly harmless.

Sazae-oni 栄螺鬼

Sazae-oni are shellfish ogres. Their natural form is that of a clam or snail. They use their powers to transform themselves into beautiful women then pretend they are drowning. Once aboard a ship, they seduce the crew one by one and steal their testicles. This attack is completely painless, and the victim may not notice for several hours.

The Sazae-oni may keep their prizes, or sell them back to their owners. If returned, the testicles reattach automatically.

Shojo 猩々

Shojo are sea sprites that resemble orangutans. They are devoted partiers, more than happy to welcome travelers to their sea-side festivities.

Kitsune 狐

When a fox reaches 100 years of age, it grows another tail and becomes a Kitsune. For every century of life, an extra tail is added.

Kitsune are charismatic and highly adaptable. Their curiosity leads them to involve themselves in human affairs, often leading to trouble.

Kitsune are clever shapeshifters. Whereas other Yokai have human forms, Kitsune can imitate specific persons. Sometimes when Kitsune are drunk, they partially lose control of their abilities, allowing their tails to be seen.

There are two paths that Kitsune can follow in life. They either associate themselves with the Celestial Bureaucracy and become Zenko, or the succumb to their baser nature and become Yako.

Tanuki 狸

Tanuki are raccoon-dogs that have acquired supernatural powers, most often through age. They look like squat dogs with a raccoon mask. Tanuki always wear hats and frequently carry sake bottles. For those who care to look, Tanuki sport enormous testicles, which they can stretch into raincoats, boats or a variety of other shapes.

Kitsune are clever shapeshifters, Tanuki are masters. They can disguise themselves as inanimate objects, taking on forms limited only by their imagination. The two races do not get along, leading to much comedy.

Tanuki are tricksters by nature, and their morphing ability gives wings to their desire. They also love to party and drink. A drunken Tanuki is a disaster waiting to happen.
