My kids used their cards at the IRN-BRU

Carnival at Christmas and saved a lot of

money. We all had a ball and were able to

afford to go back in the new year. Ive got

3 kids so it all adds up. Great discount.

    Nicole, South Glasgow

My daughter is always comparing our household to her friends'

and gets envious when their parents take the kids to a local

buffet place as a treat. My husband and I can barely afford to

pay for everyday food, so my mum suggested introducing 'Pizza

Night' where we make our own. The ingredients are cheap and

it allows the kids to get involved and decorate their pizzas with

their favourite toppings. We turn our kitchen into a 'restaurant'

making a big cardboard sign with the name of our restaurant

("Niall's Italian Kitchen") So every Friday night the sign goes

up, we put music on usually One Direction and we have

our own little pizza party. The whole family loves it and it's

within our budget. When it's sunny we'll take it outside.

I hope my neighbours like 1D!

    Elaine, Maryhill

  • Wee Star of the SeasonMy daughter Eve is amazing. She had

    just

turned 7 when her eye suddenly turned.

She got a brain scan that showed she

had Neuronal Migration Disorder. She is

now wearing glasses and more tests have

been done. She is just so brave and always

smiling. She does Acro Gymnastics, has

moved up to the Penguins group in her

swimming lessons and she is also an orange

belt and two tabs in her karate. I am so

    proud of my little star.

DID YOU KNOW? Healthy eating can make

you feel better, more confident, happier, less stressed, sleep better and be more energised.

Getting kids to eat healthier from a young age can help them avoid major illnesses later in life.

There is strong scientific evidence that physical activity and a healthy diet can protect against many of Scotlands leading chronic diseases including heart disease, diabetes and some cancers.

The Eatwell Chart highlights the different types of food that make up our diet, and shows the proportions we should eat them in to have a well balanced and healthy diet.

    EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

With the 2015 World Gymnastics Championships coming up this October, we spoke to Team Scotland and Team GB Artistic Gymnast, Daniel Purvis about what its like to be one of the sports brightest stars!

    Daniel Purvis

Youve had an impressive career, which has so far included winning a Bronze medal at the 2012 Olympic Games as well as a Gold, Silver and Bronze medal at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. Tell us how it all started for you?Born in Liverpool meant that as a kid I had to play football and was keen because my brother spent several years at the Everton Academy. But I didnt shape up too well at that! I loved sport in general but no specific game / activity. Needing to channel my increasing hyperactivity, mum and dad located a local gymnastics club and enrolled me into their recreational classes on Saturday mornings. I was 7 at the time and Southport YMCA Gymnastics Club was soon to become my second home for many years. It felt like gymnastics was what Id been born for and couldnt imagine being happy doing anything else.

Whats a typical day like for you?I have a light breakfast at 8am and Im in the gym for 9am. Theres lots of fitness and strength training involved as well as basic practice across most apparatus. Then its a nutritious lunch at 1pm with rest until 3pm, then back in the gym till 6pm working on new moves and routines. Theres maybe some physio after that then after dinner its a bit of relaxation and I always have an early night!

Glasgow is hosting the 2015 World Gymnastics Championships this October which is a qualifying event for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Are you feeling pressure to deliver great performances in order for you to be chosen to compete? The Glasgow World Champs are hugely important and the pressure is building to make sure we qualify in style in front of huge Glasgow support.

Its going to be a huge task to make the British Team for Glasgow. Its my main aim for the next few months with several competitions before then to try and grab a place in the Team. This sort of pressure isnt easy to deal with and can affect you even when you feel confident. Im just hoping that the depth of experience Ive had over the years will serve me well at the crucial moments that are coming between now and October.

    Interview

You are an artistic gymnast, competing in Parallel Bars, Vault, Horizontal Bar, Floor, Pommel Horse and Still Rings. Most athletes dont have this many disciplines. Is it difficult to perfect your technique across all of these?Being an All Around (6 piece) gymnast is hugely important to me and its why I started gymnastics in the first place. It is tough to match world class standards because they are constantly being raised. Most World/Olympic medalists train/compete on only 2 or 3 pieces. The demands of doing 6 mean that you have to be really disciplined to work hard for 35 hours over 51 weeks per year and try to live healthily so that your body doesnt let you down. Do you have any rituals before you compete? No but I do believe in Karma which helps keep my head in the right place at competitions. Do you get recognized in the street?Quite often but I always welcome it. People ask me if Im the Ginger gymnast from the London Olympics! They usually have a child or relative involved with the sport and its great that gymnasts are being recognised in Britain more. Up-coming gymnasts get real inspiration knowing that their sport is gaining such popularity in a country that hasnt really embraced gymnastics until recent years.

What do you like to do in your spare time?Going to the pictures to catch the latest movie is probably my favourite pastime but chilling at a nice restaurant with my girlfriend comes close. Every now and again I manage to catch up with the lads I grew up with and that also helps to ease any pressures. Whats next for you? Its all about making the Team for Glasgow 2015. With such great talent coming through there are few guaranteed places! Thats everything to me but it all starts this February at the Scottish Championships where I hope to kick start my year.

QUICKFIRE Q&ALast film you saw at the cinema? Taken 3 (Good!)

Favourite meal? Roast duck dinner (with trimmings!)

What song gets you up on the dancefloor? Daft Punk (One More Time).

If you werent a professional swimmer, what occupation would you choose? Stuntman.

Who was your last text from and what does it say? From my personal coach, Jeff Brookes. He wasnt happy cos I hadnt messaged him this week to say how training was going at Lilleshall.

This year we have performed at the Glasgow Burns Association Wreath Laying Ceremony in George Square and at the Burns Society Annual Dinner.

What are your proudest achievements? We got to sing and dance while playing instruments on STV Glasgow. We came second for Senior Choir in the Burns competition this year and have won many other awards.

Whats the groups favourite song to perform? We love performing a wide range of songs and adding dance moves to the more upbeat ones. Our current favourites include Queens Dont Stop Me Now, Rule the World by Take That and Aviciis Wake Me Up.

    Thorntree Primary School

  • Local Vocals31

What is the groups favourite song to perform? Our favourite song last year was The Deil Came Fiddling Through the Toon which is a song by Robert Burns. We liked this song because its fast and jazzy and we all enjoy it.

Tell us something our readers might like to know?We have a lot of practices and we love to work in choir to learn a lot of new things e.g. how to read music. For a lot of students music is a quite big part of their life.

What tips can you give people who want to join a choir? If you want to join go ahead. It's a very good experience and its very simple to join. Our teacher, Mr Fraser told us everything we needed to know about music and vocals. Its very easy to join.

Are you a pupil at Thorntree Primary and fancy joining the choir? Here are some more details...Choir is on every Tuesday up until the end of each term. There might be some days off but Mr Fraser will inform you if anything like that happens. If youre interested please come along.
