Castle Building & Remodeling, Inc. is a professional design/build remodeling company that specializes in residential remodeling. Castle is a second—generation family business with over 2,800 past clients and was founded in 1977 by Marty Schirber.

The 2015 Castle Educational Home Tour's purpose is to educate and inform the public on real everyday remodeling projects, not just the largest or most expensive projects like the luxury tours or Parade shows. On our tour, Castle will show the public what is attainable in today's budget. Remodeling is a huge investment and we understand people need to think about their decision for a long period of time. This tour is to help people understand what a realistic remodel involves as well as what is achievable within their budget to create a valuable investment in their home. This tour will help improve the industry as a whole and help people make better remodeling decisions regarding their home remodeling projects.

Use this guide book to learn more about the homes we are showcasing. It will direct you to the homes that will best help you in planning your project. In each home we have an expert ready to talk to you about the project you are visiting, your upcoming project and how Castle can help you achieve your remodeling goals.

Sincerely,

I SEE FIELDS OF GREENCastle Building & Remodeling partners with Field Outdoor Spaces to provide their clients with the best urban landscaping in the Twin Cities

While many companies shy away from the tight lots and challenging yards in urban spaces, Field Outdoor Spaces has made an art of it. For the last eight years and count-ing, Field has worked with homeowners in Minneapolis, St. Paul and other neighborhoods around the Twin Cities to maximize their outdoor living areas.

Most projects start with a design and the experienced designers, led by owner Jason Rathe, are especially good at listening and making sure that the end product gives you time to enjoy the space rather than just work to keep it up. Field design balances well-thoughtout living areas with plantings that give a sense of a natural and living environment.

Field projects are predominantly completed in typical urban front and backyards – spaces that are hard to get into and have layers of history and decay. A typical South Minneapolis or Mac-Groveland backyard is about 40’ wide by 30-40’ long. A project like this will often start with a patio and Field recommends wiping out the entire lawn and planting beds at the same time. This means that lots of compost can be added to all the areas and you can get a great start to your new lawn and beds. Field says the “hot” materials for patios are bluestone, clay paver and historic street brick.

We also incorporate landscape carpentry like pergolas, trellises and raised planters – the elements re-ally help break up the space and make it feel like an outdoor room.

Field prides itself on being up front on pricing. During the free consultation, the Field designer will walk through the scope of the project and listen to what you want to accomplish with your renovation. They then describe how

they would approach your space and for most projects, try to give a sense of what the budget might be right there. Using the example of a typical 40’ by 30’ backyard – Rathe figures that they can come in take everything out, install a bluestone patio, restore the beds and lawn and plant the backyard with a couple small trees and natural plantings for between $12,000 and $14,000.

Field offers thoughtful design, professional crews that build high-quality landscapes with minimal impact on your existing plants, structures and your neigh-borhood. Field would love to talk to you about your next landscape project.

Gardens On TourCheck out these 3 beautiful landscapes featured on tour this year:

612.789.9381 www.fieldoutdoorspaces.com

5336 York Ave. S., Minneapolis, MN 55410

Full yard landscaping for a Tudor-style house with front hillside and west facing backyard that was unusable due to blazing west sun. A small front wall and patio creates a calm sitting area to admire the wild area of nearby Minnehaha Creek. Plant selections throughout the property include many shrubs and evergreens that focus on foli-age color and lower maintenance requirements. The curving lines of the back patio, walkway and yard make each part of the yard feel finished and intentional.

H20

3841 Pleasant Ave. S., Minneapolis, MN 55409

Field took the design done by a friend of the owner’s and built this satisfying modern and natural backyard. The outdoor grill counters/prep stations were created in combination with Mill City Steel. The steel frames and hot-rolled steel counter surface are a great way to create a cost effective and hip outdoor kitchen. The separate gravel firepit area bordered in bluestone stone interlaces with planted berms. There is ample room for annual flowers in the steel planters next to the patio and room for vegies in the planters near the alley.

H21

5304 James Ave. S., Minneapolis, MN 55419

The design for this ultra small urban backyard includes a patio that doubles as a chess board and a chunky wood frame outdoor kitchen that holds a Green Egg and gas grill. The rough hewn wood look is carried through with posts for a hammock and two benches that sit on either side of a small firepit. Gravel and planting areas help get the most from every inch of this space.

Castle Building & Remodeling, Inc. is a professional design/build firm specializing in residential remodeling. Castle is a second-generation family business, started in 1977, with over 2,800 past clients. Marty Schirber started the company from his basement and watched it grow over the years. In 2005, Castle moved into its headquarters on Johnson St NE, and two years later Loren acquired Castle Building & Remodeling from his father.

Since then, Castle has seen two more locations open, one in St. Paul and the other in South Minneapolis. The unique design studios allow Castle’s interior designers to help clients plan anything from a not so big project all the way up to a whole house reconfiguration. In June of 2012, Castle merged with Camelot Builders, LLC and Aaron Johnson joined the ownership team at Castle as Operations Manager. With the addition of the Camelot employees, Castle can better handle all sizes of remod-eling projects. In March of 2014 Castle acquired The Natural Built Home Store and now works to incorporate eco-friendly materials in each project.

If you hire Castle you will find that our tag line “The Best Value in Professional Remodeling” is our way of life. Our professional team strives to bring a luxury service to the masses. A clearly defined process, direct buying relationships, time tested systems, and efficiency allow Castle to provide a better value and guarantee a better experience. Through our three pronged guarantee we hold ourselves accountable, so you do not have to.

There's a lot to consider when redesigning your home. Meet the team that will help you make all the right choices.

Courtney Walker Remodeling DesignerInterior Designer, Allied ASID

Mark Benzell Remodeling Design Pro

Ashley Hansen Remodeling Designer,Interior Designer

Janneke Schaap Remodeling DesignerSustainability Specialist

Courtney got her start in interior design well before she had any formal training. She received a Bachelors of Science in Interior Design in 2011 from The Art Institutes International Minnesota, and has been with Castle since. She started out as a Design Intern and quickly worked her way up to doing her own projects. Starting out assisting other designers gave her the opportunity to really learn Castle’s process and observe the different design techniques individual designers at Castle use. With this strong foundation and the desire to always be improving she is excited to tackle any new opportu-nity Castle throws her way. When she is not at Castle, Courtney enjoys cuddling up with a good book and her cat, Carl or spending hours exploring the endless parks in the area.

Designing and crafting is something that has been engrained into Ashley’s char-acter through the influence of family and friends. The concept of DIY was taught to her early on. From years of practicing this, whether it be sewing clothes, sewing her comforter, making art, or upholstering furniture she developed a passion for de-sign. Ashley recognizes that designers are given a great responsibility and opportunity to redefine quality. Interior Design is an outlet in which she is able to share this belief knowing how the layout, selections and aesthetic ap-pearance of a space can truly impact people. Therefore she truly enjoys the opportunity to build relationships with clients and help them form solutions which consider both form and function and best accommo-date their lifestyle.

Mark started remodeling homes in 1978 and oper-ated his own design/build firm for 25 years. He has been a long time member of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry and served on the Board of Directors for the Minnesota Chapter of NARI from 1991-2007. In 1992, Mark’s company was chosen by Remodeling Magazine as one of their ‘Big 50′ contractors of the year. As President of the Minnesota Chapter in 1994, Mark was honored with the Industry Leader of the Year Award. In December of 2007, Mark was named as a founding Director for Minnesota GreenStar and served as the Minne-sota GreenStar Treasurer and Operations Manager through the end of 2011.

Surrounded by DIY parents and a houseful of broth-ers in the woods; Janneke grew up with a penchant for the hands-on and the playful, as well as a deep-seated respect for nature. At work, she resonates with crafting amazing spaces through creative use of resources and ap-proaches every project with an excitement that shines through the final product. She believes beauty in design is best achieved through high-functioning spaces, and refuses to be-lieve the two concepts are mutually exclusive.

Emily Blonigen Remodeling DesignerInterior Designer

Natalie Hanson Remodeling DesignerInterior Designer

Alyssa Oleinik Remodeling Designer

Natalie received her Bach-elor of Science in Interior Design in 2012 and has been actively working in the industry ever since. She attended an alternative high school at the Minne-sota Zoo called the School of Environmental Studies, where she developed a passion for environmental sciences. Right out of high school, she decided to pur-sue a career in Meteorology at the University of Okla-homa where she spent two years chasing tornados and attending Sooner football games. While this was ex-citing, she knew that it was not a lifetime career path for her. She has been interest-ed in art, architecture and interiors since childhood and settled on the field of interior design for her next educational adventure.

Emily Blonigen received her Bachelor of Science in Interior Design from the Art Institutes International Minnesota. One thing that she appreciates from her education is the artistic approach Ai takes to the Interior Design profession. Emily is currently studying for her LEED Green As-sociates Certification. Her main interest in the field is to find opportunities to cre-ate sustainable and healthy environments. Design may be achieved through trends, unique styles, colors and materials, but great design is found through consider-ing the users experience and the continuing future within that environment. With knowledgeable design practices and smart material selections, she is opening the doors of design towards a prosperous and more sustainable future that she is excited to be a part of.

During her ten plus years in the remodeling indus-try Amy has worked as a drafter, designer, project manager and store manag-er. She has achieved cer-tification as an Associate Kitchen and Bath Designer through the NKBA, as well as a LEED Green Associ-ate through the USGBC. At Castle and The Natural Built Home Store, she pitches in wherever need-ed. She works on keeping the showrooms up to date, assists designers with proj-ects, trains new employees and leads design work for the Save-A-Castle division. She develops, edits and maintains companywide processes and documents while also fostering con-tinuing education among the design staff.

Alyssa graduated in May of 2013 with her Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Min-nesota- Twin Cities. She studied abroad in the Spring of 2012 in Oaxaca, Mexico and came to ap-preciate the contrast in architectural style when comparing the courtyard buildings there to the high rises in the Twin Cities. Alyssa grew up in a fam-ily that enjoys flipping houses and was drawing floor plans in chalk on her grandmother’s driveway by age five. Alyssa loves skiing, hiking, camping and anything that will give a rush of adrena-line such as skydiving, white water rafting and zip lining. She has traveled to Europe and Central Amer-ica, and foresees plenty of adventure in her future!

Normally, when we do a kitchen remodel, the kitchen is out of commission for a few months. That was not the case with this project! This client chose to move the kitchen to an entirely different room. We removed an abandoned chimney and moved the kitchen to the existing sitting room. Now, the kitchen is much closer to the traditional dining room and front living room. Rather than a single wall of cabinetry, this homeowner now has more cabinetry than they know what to do with. We maximized space by bringing the cabinets all the way to the ceiling and incorporated shelving in the closet under the stairs for pantry/small appliance/cleaning supply storage. The carpet was removed and hardwood floors were refinished in the entire 1st floor. Care was taken to incorpo-rate and repair the existing antique light fixtures as well. A Corian countertop with integral sink and neutral tile back-splash provide a nice contrast to the darker oak cabinetry.

The kitchen is this 1996 built home, in an old section of NE Minneapolis, needed a refresh. Dropped soffits over the up-per cabinets restricted storage space and the Homeowners needed an upgrade from the laminate countertops and basic oak cabinetry. In addition, they wanted to open up a wall between the living room and dining room and add a three-sided fireplace.

The basic layout of the kitchen stayed the same, but Castle added a lot more flair with cherry stained cabinets and a painted island cabinet. Cambria countertops and a maple butcher block top over the island cabinet accent the unique tile backsplash with a handmade bubble tile detail over the range. The same custom tile is used as a fireplace surround to tie the entire project together.

Kitchen Layout BasicsPlanning a kitchen remodel can be a complicated puzzle with many variables and peculiarities. Some considerations that Castle’s professional designers consider include: Finding the perfect placement for the sink, locating the dishwasher, spacing for an efficient work triangle, having ample walk spaces and good traffic flow, cabinet clearances and door swings, and a mix of storage and prep space. Below are drawings and diagrams from the National Kitchen and Bath Association that go into further detail on kitchen planning basics.

Having a well built, classic design, this 1965 home has been a space which the homeowners have enjoyed for about four-teen years. To extend that enjoyment for another twenty plus years, this family desired a kitchen remodel which would be utilitarian, low maintenance, and an overall timeless design. Wanting the new design to provide a more open flow from entry/living room a wall, which had separated the two, was removed. In addition, the “everyday” kitchen table area was replaced with extended cabinets and a large center island. The large island provides a welcoming space for guests to perch and chat with the husband who loves baking. While making the kitchen space more functional for everyday use, the dining room was also updated by adding built in cabinets to store seasonal items and display keepsakes. A lower cabinet beneath the window will dual function as both a seating bench and countertop for setting serving platters.

Things to Know About Cabinets

1) Wood Species - There are many types of wood species available.

2) Manufacturing Process - A good starting point in selecting your cabinets is to determine the options, availability and specialization your kitchen project time-frame and budget requires, then decide if stock, semi-custom or custom cabinets best suit your needs. Stock – These cabinets offer economical pricing, a wide range of standard sizes, styles and finishes and are often available the same day or within a few days of purchase. Semi-Custom – These cabinets offer more flexible options for storage, design and style as well as a wider selection of wood and finish choices. Semi-custom cabi-

nets offer more functionality. Custom – These cabinets are constructed by hand to fit your kitchen to your specifications. Custom cabinets make use of all available space and are an ideal solution when non-standard sizes are needed to fit irregular-shaped spaces. Delivery time can take up to nine or more weeks, depending on the cabinet maker’s schedule. Price varies based on size, materials and options. 3) Cabinet Box Materials - Cabinets are often constructed from other materials or combinations of materials. These materials are often combined to provide cost-effective, high-quality durability for the parts of your cabinet that are typically unexposed or behind the scenes. Materials commonly used for cabinet boxes and shelves include: Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) – An engineered wood made from fine wood particles and glue formed into sheets, MDF is often used as a backing material for laminates and other finishes. MDF is very dense, resists warping and has a smooth surface suitable for veneers, laminates and paints. Plywood – This engineered wood is composed of layers of veneers stacked and glued together with alternate layers oriented at right an-gles, providing strength in its length and width. Furniture-grade plywood is used in custom cabinetry. Because heat and moisture cause wood to expand and contract in the direction of the grain, plywood’s cross-grain pattern makes it more stable and stronger than solid wood. 4) Drawers – Make sure to check out the drawers and the hardware on the drawers. Is it soft close? Does the hardware mount on the sides of the cabinets taking up space and making the drawers smaller on the bottom?

6) Accessories & Add-Ons - Get the most out of your kitchen cabinets with accessories that help maximize storage, provide easy ac-cess to cabinet contents and reduce clutter on countertops. Pull-Out Shelve - Offer the convenience of quick access to everything on the shelf. Two-tiered Cutlery/Flatware Dividers - Store nearly twice as many utensils and flat-ware. Lazy Susans - Make items in corner cabinets accessible with one- and two-tiered spin-ning shelves.Pegged Plate Organizers - Slides out for easy access to plates with adjustable pegs for flexible storage

7) Door Design - Once you’ve selected the wood type for your doors, you can choose the design from literally hundreds of styles. While manufacturers offer a wide variety from which to choose, below are some of the most popular:

Slab - Offers a flat, clean canvas for hardware with a streamlined and minimalistic style ideal for contemporary designs.Recessed Panel - Similar to slab with a minimal style that adds depth and interest. Ver-satile enough to go with country or modern designs.Raised Panel - A classic style that blends well with formal classic, traditional looks.Shaker - known for its simplicity and favored for its warm and casual feel, the Shaker style is ideal for understated looks.

Door designs can be further enhanced by replacing wood panels with decorative glass, turning storage into displays, especially when paired with in-cabinet lighting.

This 1920 home had a beautiful master bedroom with large windows bringing in lots of sunlight… but it was missing one thing… A master bathroom! We were able to utilize space from the existing closet and only steal about 18’’ from the master bedroom. Although it has a small footprint, this bath-room is nothing less than luxurious. Running the floor tile into the shower with a frameless glass shower door helps create the illusion of space where there would normally be a division. The Kohler memoirs pedestal also helps achieve the open, spacious feel in the bath. The two recessed LED can lights in addition to the sconces on either side of the recessed medicine cabinet really brighten up the space. Finally, the marble basket weave patterned floor tile and subway wall tile stay true to the classic style of the home, while the gray grout adds a more modern touch. In addition to the bath, a new closet with double doors was also created alongside the bath.

We touched virtually every room in this South Minneapolis home. All three floors received significant remodeling. The lower level was turned into a wonderful family room for the owners and their grandchildren, while plenty of unfinished storage space was retained. The main level work included a larger kitchen, new mudroom/laundry room and the creation of a more open floor plan to the dining room and living room. The upper level increased in size with an addition over the main floor to add a private office. The master suite was gut-ted, enlarged and features a custom ¾ master bathroom.

To accomplish the items listed above, we built a two-story addition in place of an existing breezeway, modified the master suite space by enlarging the master bath and com-bining the master closets, and gutted the lower level. We really wanted the space to be a place for the owners to entertain, enhance the pieces they have obtained from traveling and other personal décor, be beautiful on their own, and last but not least be functional and unified.

Licensed, Bonded and InsuredThe contractor is licensed to practice in the State of Min-nesota and carries appropriate insurance coverage in case anything goes wrong with the project.

PriceThe contractor respects you and your budget and designs the project to fit within these parameters.

ReputationThe contractor has a good reputation with past customers, and his customers refer him to friends and family.

Completeness of the EstimateThe contractor gives you a detailed estimate and explains all allowances and other costs associated with your project.

The ContractAll the necessary facets of the project are spelled out clearly. You won’t have any surprises once the job is started.

Level of ExperienceThis is a combination of years in the business, typical proj-ects for the contractor, and whether the contractor has been in business long enough to know where their niche is and what they are good at.

Business LocationHow close is the contractor’s shop or office to you? Working within a defined area can allow a contractor to give more personal attention to each job. This becomes much more difficult if the contractor’s office is across town from the project.

Company HistoryCompany history refers to the strength of the business and the length of time doing the same business. Good busi-nesses sustain themselves and build while poor businesses struggle to find a niche and reinvent themselves.

Organization on the JobOrganization is a major part of a successful remodeling project. The plumbing and electrical work must be complet-ed before the cabinets and countertops can be set in place. Coordination of all the different trades will lead to a smooth project.

Design ServicesDesign services are most important when changing the shape or layout of a space. For a remodeling contractor to have a designer on staff shows that they are committed to creating the best and most suitable space for your project.

Size of the CompanyThe size of a company can affect the quality of the product. A company that has grown too quickly may not be able to provide the same quality, experience, and attention to detail as a smaller company who has retained the same employees for years.

Job ScheduleThe contractor is in charge of the scheduling of the job so your home is disrupted as little as possible. This involves ordering materials and coordinating subcontractors to get in, finish their part of the job, and get out.

Use Employees or SubsWhen a contractor works with his own carpenters every day for years, they get a very good idea of their strengths and weaknesses. Contractors who hire employees from a pool of laborers may get new workers on the job every day and he won’t know how experienced or qualified the workers will be.

CommunicationCommunication is very important to a successful remodel-ing project. A good contractor will be easy to get a hold of and will have systems in place to make sure your wishes are noted and followed. They will also make sure everyone on the jobsite knows what is going on.

Customer ServiceCustomer service is how well the contractor serves you and your family. This can include communication, keeping appointments, being punctual, and keeping the customer informed at all times. This may also include educating the customer about their options.

Creativity Creativity is an important skill in the remodeling business. Often a contractor is faced with a homeowner who doesn’t know what he wants. In this situation, it is up to the con-tractor to solve the problem and make the space “work.”

Guarantees and WarrantiesMinnesota law mandates that contractors warranty their work for a specified period of time, so technically all con-tractors have warranties. A good contractor will clearly spell out his warranty in his contract and will provide the homeowner with the expiration dates

CraftsmanshipCraftsmanship and attention to detail are very important to make a project fit into your home. Simple details like matching trim and windows can really make a project look like it has always been a part of your home.

Factors to Consider when Choosing a Contractor

Page 32: 2015 guidebook lowres

The old kitchen was partitioned into two separate spaces. Sometime after this 1936 home was built, an old breakfast nook was converted during a large addition to the rear of the home. Some additional cabinetry made the space into an extension of the kitchen. The combined space formed a long galley, but didn’t feel like a complete kitchen. Also, the dining room was separated from the kitchen by a swinging door. The Homeowner’s wanted to open up the kitchen to the dining room and combine the two sections of the kitchen into one, new, efficient kitchen with lots of storage, counter-top space and improved lighting.

Castle exceeded those desires with a fully integrated kitchen, tastefully connected to the dining room with an open archway and peninsula. A large window scape over the kitchen sink lets in tons of natural light to accent the rich alder cabinetry and hardwood flooring. The entire kitchen is connected by a unique and playful backsplash tile comple-menting the Cambria countertops.

Reconfiguring your Home

Reconfiguring the layout of a home can help solve a lot of problems. The typical problems we hear day after day are rooms being too disconnected or lack of mudrooms, offices spaces, family rooms, or enough bathrooms and bedrooms. Sometimes the solutions can be as simple as opening up a wall to make rooms feel more connected and larger. Think the relationship between kitchen and dining rooms or using two bedrooms to create one large master suite. Sometimes, relocating a doorway or win-dow can really transform a space and allow for better flow and storage or counter space in a kitchen. Oftentimes, unfinished space can be captured and finished to increase the amount of living spaces, bedrooms, or bathrooms in a home. We are contacted daily with homeowners inquiring about using their attic space or basements. We also find that reconfiguring just takes some getting used to think-ing about how you will use the house vs. how you do currently.

Having a designer out to your home allows for a fresh perspective. We can typically come up with alternate ideas right there on the spot. And during the design phase, with the help of our design soft-ware, we are able to create realistic 3D renderings. We find that this is a great tool in helping home-owners see what the newly reconfigured spaces will be like. Visualizing it before you buy it equals no surprises and allows you to explore all of your options. Design fees at Castle are typically 2-4% of expected construction costs and include 3d renderings.

See before photo and proposed 3D renderings of this project below:

Castle’s Design & Planning System: Castle’s system of building the project in a 3D design program before physically building the project removes the mystery for many home-owners. The ability to see the project in 3D before construction eliminates the need for our clients to be able to read blueprints and also leads to extremely accurate estimates. With detailed plans and even more detailed Line-Item Specifications, Castle’s customers have very few surprises during the project. Before

This very typical, 1947 built, story and a half home in South Minneapolis had a small ‘U’ shaped kitchen adjacent to a similarly small dining room, with a standard side entry access, no more than a landing at the top of the basement stairs. No place to hang coats or take off shoes, and very little space for an active family to prepare meals and to store all the items needed in a modern kitchen. Many years earlier, a small screened-in porch was added off the dining room, but was getting minimal use.

With a new, spacious, family room addition in the place of the old screen porch and a 5’ expansion off the kitchen and side entry, along with removing the wall between the kitchen and the dining room, this home underwent a total transformation from small cramped spaces to a wide open great room containing kitchen, dining and family gathering spaces. As a bonus, a bright and functional mud room was included to meet all of their needs.

This mid-50’s suburban home, still had the original kitchen cabinets, countertops and appliances and it was very overdue for a remodel. The Homeowners however, wanted to do more than just update their kitchen. Between the kitchen and a large living room and dining room were the basement stairs. Fortunate-ly, an earlier addition to the house included a second set of stairs to the basement, so this stairway was expendable.

By eliminating the stairway, Castle was able to ex-pand the kitchen and open it up to rest of the house. With sleek, contemporary walnut cabinetry, a built-in breakfast nook using walnut and hickory and unique countertop and backsplash tile materials, this is truly a one-of-kind remodel. This is a must see, so don’t miss it on your tour of Castle projects!

Mythic Paint - What’s New?

Mythic® Paint is a non-toxic, ultra low odor paint that provides the durability and coverage you expect from a premium paint without the off-gassing VOC’s and cancer-causing toxins that emit years after drying. Stronger, safer, smarter paint®. Now that’s a breath of fresh air. Mythic paint is available at The Natural Built Home Store.

Safe for PeopleSo we want to feel safe in our home, and we want it to be beautiful. Now we can have both. Thanks to Mythic Paint you can decorate your home in the highest quality, most durable colors and know that you are getting noth-ing more. No toxic gasses that leak off into your home up to six years after application. No VOCs that can harm your family and deplete the ozone – nothing but gorgeous colors and peace of mind. So now you can go inside and get some fresh air.Visit the Mythic Paint website:

www.mythicpaint.com

Safe for PetsSo your home is safe for your family, but what about your best friend? Fido, Felix and tweety deserve to breath easier too. It’s not just dogs and cats that can be affected by the poor air quality in your home - a quality that is reduced by toxins in common cleaning products, as well as the off gassing that comes from VOC containing paints. The off-gassing doesn’t just end when the new-paint smell wears off – up to 50% of the toxic gasses and carcinogens from VOC containing paints leak into your home up to six years after it dries on your wall. Fortunately for Fido, Mythic Paint contains zero-toxins, zero-carcinogens and zero-VOCs – so your home can be their sanctuary too.

Safe for the EarthIt is estimated that 10% of the ozone depleting substances in the urban United States come from paints and other surface coatings. The majority of these substances are VOCs or volatile organic compounds and they are the cause of not only thinning ozone but also the rise in global warming and increased respira-tory related diseases and cancer. Fortunately for the planet now we have Mythic Paint –the World’s first high performance, zero-toxin, zero-VOC paint. So now we can enjoy both our beautifully decorated homes and our beautiful planet.

Available at The Natural Built Home StoreMythic Paint is avaiable at The Natural Built Home Store in many varying colors. $36.74 for One Gallon of Mythic Classic Paint.

These homeowners purchased their dated 1941 home for the phenomenal location and knowing they planned to remodel extensively. The home had seen some questionable remodeling in the past (ask the designer about the windows!), so Castle was brought in for design and construction on what became a whole-home remodel and energy retrofit, with special focus on environmental sensitivity to reduce the re-model’s impact. In addition to a dramatically improved main floor and reworked upper level master suite, the project included a brand new kitchen and master bath, whole-house triple pane window package, spray-foam insulation throughout, beautiful durable finishes, many of which were salvaged and meticulously repurposed, and an incredible energy-efficient European skylight that you just have to see.

Making Your Home More Energy Efficienct

What is an Energy Retrofit? An energy retrofit is a whole-building analysis and construction process that uses “integrative design” to achieve much larger energy savings than conventional energy retrofits. Deep energy retrofits can be applied to both residential and non-residential (“commercial”) buildings. Home performance retrofit programs can also include advanced diagnostic tools and procedures such as infrared cameras, blower doors, and duct blaster testing.

Before you start to transform your home with an amazing remodel by getting rid of the dated items and picking pretty fixtures/furnishings or improving the layout, don’t forget about the behind the scenes/backbone of the house. While it’s not glamour-ous thinking about insulation or if your furnace, water heater, appliances, and light bulbs are as efficient as possible, you’ll save money in the long run. You’ll also improve your family’s comfort and live a more sustainable life.

What is a Home Energy Analysis?

A home energy analysis is the first step in the home energy retrofit process and typically takes between 2 and 4 hours. A professional building analyst will walk with you around your home to diagnose the root causes of energy loss and make individualized recommendations for the most cost-effective measures that will improve your home’s energy efficiency. This analysis will help you and us understand how your house performs as an integrated system. The analyst will use advanced diagnostic equipment (e.g. blower door) to locate air leaks, determine the effectiveness of your existing insulation, rate the effi-ciency of your appliances and measure moisture infiltration. Working with you, the analyst will make a prioritized list of home energy improvements and help obtain all available utility and govern-ment rebates.

Why can’t I just get solar panels?

Solar panels do reduce your depen-dence on non-renewable energy. How-ever, if you install solar panels without retrofitting your home, you end up wastefully pumping clean energy into a leaky house. Most of a home’s energy loss comes from its basement and attic, which is why a home energy retrofit is the best way to seal the energy leaks and reduce energy consumption.

What are the benefits of doing a Home Energy Audit?

• Lower energy bills• Improved home comfort• Increase home resale value• Lower environmental impact• Revealing hidden problems in the Home

Will retrofitting affect the aesthetics of my home?

Castle specializes in remodeling older homes restoring them to their former glory. Fortunately, the home energy improvements we do are entirely invis-ible. Our main services, air-sealing and insulation, do not change the appear-ance of any part of your home.

What is a blower door test?A blower door is a diagnostic tool designed to measure the air tightness of buildings and to help locate air leak-age sites. A blower door consists of a calibrated fan for measuring an airflow rate, and a pressure-sensing device to measure the air pressure created by the fan flow. The combination of pressure and fan-flow measurements are used to determine the building air tightness. The air tightness of a build-ing is useful knowledge when trying to increase energy conservation or decrease indoor air pollution, or control building pressures.

After living with a less-than-ideal kitchen for two years & considering an addition to expand, these homeown-ers hired Castle for design & construction on a full kitchen remodel within the existing home footprint that now feels spacious & like it’s always been. The previ-ous kitchen’s layout was cramped, dark & unwork-able for more than one person. A wall was removed between kitchen & dining to increase usable counter space & functionality. This allowed room for stunning locally-built Douglas Fir custom cabinetry that maxi-mizes every possible inch of storage, pristine quartz countertops & Japanese tile backsplash, large triple pane windows custom-designed to let in maximum light, spray-foam insulation & improved ventilation throughout the space & a mid-century lighting pack-age to bring this home up to date while respecting it’s 1940 roots.

Every project has a starting point and with this kitchen that piece was the vintage sink. Inspired by the traditional style, the kitchen features matte white painted inset cabinets from Crystal Cabinets. The matte texture is continued in the PaperStone Gunmetal coun-tertop which provides a nice contrast to the white cabinets. Finished off with traditional cup pulls from Colonial Bronze this project is a great blend of traditional style with modern conveniences.

Wood from the Hood

Wood From The Hood produces high quality lumber and other wood products from the Twin Cities area “Urban Forest”. By reclaiming trees in our local area, WFTH can produce high quality products from a sustainable resource and take one more step toward environmentally sensitive building and remodeling. They offer custom kiln drying and milling to your specifi-cations, in addition to stock lumber and flooring. Unique projects utilizing thick, thin, book matched and wide single boards are their specialty. Products from flooring to millwork, furniture, mantles, picture frames, cutting boards and artistic wood crafting are only some of the uses for this rich resource that until recently, may have been in front of your home. All of their lumber can be tracked to the zip code where it was harvested from. In special cases it can be tracked to a specific address.

Eco-FriendlyCountertop Options

Butcher Block countertops are fur-niture made to last a lifetime. This traditional countertop is often used for utility tables for kitchen workspaces and are highly customizable with many species of wood and looks available. Durable and long lasting butcher block remains popular.

PaperStone

PaperStone® is a sustainable composite material made from 100% post-consumer recycled paper, their own PetroFree™ phenolic resins and natural pigments. As PaperStone® ages it will assume a pleasing, lustrous, seasoned appearance that is an inherent characteristic of the material. This is a natural progression of a natural product, resulting in a beautifully soft, rich patina. The aging process takes time and, much like fine hardwood, a deep luster will develop in areas of heavier use.

Nuxite is made from crushed walnut shells suspended in a zero VOC resin binder. Walnut shells are a sustain-ably grown and renewable byproduct of annual walnut food crop harvests which impart their characteristics of high density, low absorption, and light weight to Nuxite.

Dakota Surfaces and Rust Brother produces and installs environmentally friendly custom countertops made from crushed, recycled glass in a zero-VOC epoxy resin. Design your own countertops with 100% customizable glass, aggre-gate, and background colors to choose from.

Looking to add more living space for this growing family, Homeowners of this 1923 St Paul home made the decision to finish their basement. A full new floor plan was designed to include a long list of must haves. The new space included: a new bedroom, family room for the kids to play, an additional room for guests and/or study, new 3/4 bath, easy access for bicycle storage in laundry, low pile carpet that is comfortable for the kids to play, and warmth for the MN winters! A great floor plan was designed that integrated the family room and guest bed/study that also creates wonderful sight lines and a great flow. The basement was updated with all new windows including two egress windows. Beautiful rainglass pocket doors were installed to the bath and laundry to continue the flow of natural light from room to room. Custom natural oak millwork and beautiful door knobs by Rejuvenation Hardware were installed throughout. To match the charm of the home, subway tile and hex tile floors were installed in the new bath and shower. The bath was finished with a stock vanity, mirror, lighting, and Kohler plumbing fixtures.

The main living area in this 1956 home in Mendota Heights needed some updating. The homeowners’ decided to go with the Mid-Century Modern design style that they love and that fit the style of their home. The most dramatic change happened when we removed the wall between the Dining room and Kitchen. After this was complete we installed new hickory hardwood floors in the Living and Dining room, and slate tile on the floor in the Kitchen, Entry and down the Hall-way. We took advantage of the new open layout by adding a large center island with a cooktop, seating on the Dining room side and a heater in the toe kick that helps keep the Kitchen tile warm on cold days. Custom walnut cabinets by Nest Woodworking were installed along with Cambria quartz countertops and glass mosaic tile from Mod-Walls on the backsplash. The project also features a few custom pieces built by Castle’s carpenters that include a walnut and black iron railing and a walnut veneer on the loadbearing beam that drops down on the ceiling above the island seating.

This attic project started from a blank slate. The home is a typical one and a half story Cape Cod that had an exist-ing stairwell to the attic space. The floor plan was created accommodating city building codes and to maximize ceiling height and storage space. This new master suite offers ample closet and storage space – a luxury in an older home such as this. The ¾ bathroom offers a spacious tiled shower with bench, a large custom vanity, and plenty of lighting for a clean, fresh feeling. The bedroom is large and light filled thanks to the addition of a skylight as well as replacement of the 2 existing windows. The challenge was to create a space that was efficiently conditioned – so the space was spray foamed and a separate heating and cooling unit was installed specifically for the master suite to avoid overloading the current system on the main floor and basement levels. In the end, the space is light, airy, relaxing and functional for the homeowner to enjoy for years to come.

Typical Costs for a soaking tub range from $1,000 - $4,000.

It’s really more like a radiator used to heat the room that you can also hang your towels on. This space saver can make your bathroom feel larger and give you warmth and comfort unparalleled.

Typical Costs for a heated towel warmer / radiator $1,600.00. Requires removing a radiator, drain boiler, installing new tubing & pump on the boiler, and re-fill system after the towel bar is installed.

Adding another shower head is a luxury that’s getting more popular. Whether the extra shower head will be used to help clean the shower, or just to create a more relaxing shower, you won’t be disappointed with your decision.

Typical Costs for an additional shower head: $450+.

*Note: sometimes this can require larger water lines to be run to your bathroom to support the added water flow.

This kitchen project started out as a kitchen refresh with the intention of painting existing cabinetry. Upon further budget analysis, the client decided to do a full remodel in order to get the space properly insulated and get fully functioning cabinetry with all the bells and whistles. The client knew for sure they wanted a black countertop, craftsmen elements, classic tile backsplash and a splash of burgundy, since it is her favorite color. The end result is the same layout but with cabinets that utilize all of the space they take up and are more functional through features like lazy susans, spice cabinets and more. We were also able to add a bench and pantry area by the back door for more organized storage. In the end, there are traditional craftsmen elements that are made modern by splashes of color and a little fun by doing two-toned cabinetry. The updated lighting in the space enhances the updated but classic feel and makes the space much lighter and brighter than before.

Working with an Existing Floor Plan

Often we receive inquiries from potential clients who are considering adding on to their home to enlarge their kitchen. Although this is sometimes the best scenario, other times it can make more sense to work within an existing space. Removing a wall / open floor plan = larger feeling space

Typical Project Costs – A kitchen remodel that opens up the home is typically a little over half the cost of adding on.

Kitchen Remodel - Classic

Update an outmoded 144 sf kitchen with afunctional layout. Includes:

- Removing the wall to adjacent room and installing an arch or cased opening.- Provide and install 18 linear feet of Chelsea custom wood cabinets,- Cambria Quartz countertops- Kohler undermount double-tub porcelain sink with single-lever faucet- Ventilation system- Built-in microwave- Appliance install- Custom lighting.- Two custom size wood insert type replacement windows- Add new tile or hardwood flooring- Finish with tile backsplash, painted walls, trim and ceiling.

* Please note, these project prices include premium finishes and all labor and materials. By completing some of the work yourself, such as demolition or painting and choosing moderate finishes, you can expect to reduce costs by 10-20% or more.

Kitchen Remodel - Classic

Add a 108 sf 18-by-6-foot addition to kitchen anddining room over a crawlspace. Includes:

- James Hardie pre finished fiber cement siding- Aluminum soffit and 30 year architectural shingles

The addition will enlarge the kitchen and dining room.

Includes:- Removing the wall to adjacent room and installing arch or cased opening- Provide and install 18 linear feet of Chelsea custom wood cabinets- Cambria Quartz countertops- Kohler undermount double-tub porcelain sink with single- lever faucet- Ventilation system- Built-in microwave- Appliance install- Custom lighting.- Two custom size wood insert type replacement windows- Add new tile or hardwood flooring- Finish with tile backsplash, painted walls, trim and ceiling.

This 1 ½ story home was ready for some updates. The family was looking for a bit more space, so initially looked into mov-ing; After seeing options on the market that would also require remodeling, they decided to restore their home and add some additional space so it would function better for the family. At first, Castle worked on a few layouts for a full 2nd story addition with 3 bedrooms and a bathroom; however, after additional plan-ning we decided it didn’t make sense to tear out two perfectly good bedrooms and only add one additional bedroom and bath. Instead, we kept the two original dormer bedrooms and added a dormer bathroom for the kids rooms. This saved significant cost and allowed for a 2nd small mudroom addition off the back of the home. Although the addition was small, it allowed for a much more functional kitchen layout and spot for the essential Minnesota winter coats and boots. The first floor bathroom was also redone, textured walls in the living room and dining room were sanded and skim coated for a smooth finish, and floors in the dining and living rooms sanded and refinished. All of these improvements have really brought the house back to life so it seems like new!

Moving Out vs. Adding On

“Not a big deal, you just have to plan the rest of your life” – Loren Schirber – Castle’s Sarcastic Owner

The decision to move, or stay and remodel and add on can be a tough decision that affects the rest ofyour life.

Stay and Remodel

There are a variety of ways to invest in your home, and countless reasons to do so. In our 35+ years in the remodeling business, we’ve seen why our clients have chosen to remodel their homes in lieu of moving. Here are some of the reasons they’ve mentioned to us:

“We love our neighborhood/neighbors.”“The location is perfect for work, life, and our daily activities.”“Our children are well established in the school system.”“We’ve looked at new construction and have realized that there is more value in staying and remodeling.”“We love the charm and character of our older home”.

Move

At the same time some decide to move and that remodeling isn’t the right option for them. Here are some of the common reasons they’ve mentioned to us:

“We’re not fans of neighborhood/neighbors.”“We really want to be in _____ neighborhood by our friends.”“We want to move our kids into a better school system.”“Financing our remodel isn’t going to work.”“Remodeling our home isn’t practical or fea-sible or is cost prohibitive”“Our home isn’t the greatest and we don’t re-ally like the style”.

Below: our clients decided to stay and remodel. These before and during photos show a birds eye view of an attac dormer being added for a master suite addition.

After years of making due with a mere 3’ of countertop on either side of the sink, this baker and chef craved a functional kitchen. The layout initially had a standalone stove, standalone fridge, and one small bank of cabinetry by the sink. There was a cute breakfast nook, but it was underutilized as storage for cook-books and cookware that had no place in the kitchen. The nook was also home to the roll-away leaky dishwasher that the home-owner mentioned wanting to attach to a trebuchet and catapult out of the kitchen! By simply rotating the top two steps of the basement staircase 90 degrees and taking down the walls from the breakfast nook, we were able to create a new layout that ac-complishes all of the homeowners needs. Not only were we able to gain about 14 lineal feet of countertop, but also added tons of storage. There was even room for a wine fridge! The homeown-ers chose more traditional cabinetry so the kitchen would fit the style of their bungalow, and added some more modern touches including recycled glass countertops and green accent tiles. The kitchen is now ready to prep hundreds of delicious meals!

H18: 1528 Pascal St. NWhat is a Professional Remodeler?Castle’s professional approach stems from the understanding of how difficult it can be for our clients to live through a remod-eling project, as well as the emotional roller coaster ride that remodeling can cause. We believe that how our clients’ experi-ences are managed is as important as, or more important than the actual finished remodeling product.

Castle Building & Remodeling uses a team approach that pairs an experienced Castle Interior Designer with a Castle Proj-ect Manager. You will begin by working with a trained Interior Designer who helps you plan the space. After this phase, the team works together to create a detailed set of specifications and proposal. During the production phase, a Project Manager becomes the eyes and ears on site to ensure that the project is executed as planned. Castle has created an industry-leading system to retain control over the process.

Mobile Communications: Each Castle Project Manager is equipped with a smart phone and tablet computer. This unique technology allows instant access to client and trade partner information and ensures that clients can reach their project manager.

Detailed Specification: Our detailed specification serves as a road map for the project and has proven to be extremely reliable and accurate. This system leads to improved com-munication and helps our customers and craftsmen to deliver an as-designed project with less problems and re-work than our competitors.

Design & Planning System: Castle’s system of building the project in a 3D design program before physically build-ing the project removes the mystery for many homeowners. The ability to see the project in 3D before construction elimi-nates the need for our clients to be able to read blueprints and also leads to ex-tremely accurate estimates. With detailed plans and even more detailed Line-Item Specifications, Castle’s customers have very few surprises during the project.

Change Order System: Our documented change order system is easy to follow and leads to accurate tracking of additional costs and cred-its. Change orders can be e-mailed for review and convenience.

Contractual Documents: Castle’s professional and balanced contractual documents protect both parties involved. Building Performance Guidelines: Castle provides all clients with a very thorough set of building performance guidelines that clearly lay out what to expect from your home and what to do if a warranty issue arises.

Job Start Binder: At the start of large projects, Castle’s cli-ents receive a 3-ring project binder with information on the care and maintenance of the products used in their project. The Job Start Binder also provides a place to keep plans, invoices, change orders, and other project materials. This binder is designed to answer questions before they arise and helps to keep the myriad of project paperwork organized and tidy.

Educational Resources: Over the years, Castle has built a library of educa-tional resources relating to remodeling and older homes. Our in-office library was started to help educate employees but is open and available to the public and custom-ers. We believe in education and have educational resources available on our website as well.

Lifetime Warranty: Castle’s long-term view of serving the client and building a lifetime relationship differs from many contractors who are just trying to survive and only offer the state mandated war-ranty. Our philosophy is to do things right the first time. Castle’s one-of-a-kind lifetime warranty encourages quality from the start and guarantees that if there is

a problem with workmanship, it will be fixed.

No Unforeseen Change Order Guar-antee: You can sleep well knowing that there will be no unforeseen or unexpected costs for your project. Because Castle Building & Remodeling plans so thor-oughly we can actually guarantee this. Compare this with many companies in the industry that utilize a system based on allowances that fluctuate wildly after the contract is signed leaving clients un-sure of project costs and unable to plan financially.

Guaranteed Completion Date: We’re fast, guaranteed, or we pay you. Once again because we plan your entire project well in advance of starting we can guarantee substantial completion to a forecasted completion date. This takes the worry out of the nightmare project that never ends and creates an incentive for Castle and our partners to get your home remodeled quickly so you can get your life back to normal as quickly as possible.

This 1940’s Bungalow located in the Como neighborhood of Saint Paul was ready for a Kitchen remodel that not only improved the look, but also the function. To enhance the work flow in the room the refrigerator was moved and a peninsula was added for additional work/storage space. The back wall of the Kitchen was also opened up to the home office and new glass panel barn doors were installed. On the opposite wall of the office a new triple panel sliding patio door was also added which gave the Kitchen a great view of the backyard. All new custom cabinetry went in with a few modifications like upper and lower pullouts next to the range. Recycled glass countertops were then installed with a copper, undermount, apron front sink. The original hardwood floors were uncovered in the eating area of the Kitchen, so new hardwood was installed in the rest of the Kitchen to match and then all of the hardwood floors on the main level were refinished. Along with the Kitchen updates some of the original character of the home was restored when the arches were added to a few of the main floor doorways that had been modified at some point in the past.
