INTRODUCTION
This publication provides administrative (admin.) phone operating instructions for the 5100-Series Building Communications Systems (BCS).
The publication is divided into sections according to type of operation for easy access to thevarious functions offered by the system.
• A Dialing Plan is located in the front. This plan lists the digits that you can legitimately dialto access functions within the system.
• The Basic Operation section details actual steps required to use basic operations from anAdministrative Station.
• The Advanced Operation section includes additional system functions. These functionsrequire a Level 2 or Level 3 Administrative Station* as well as a 5100-Series BCS OperatorDisplay.

SPEED DIALING
If your phone system is equipped with “speed” or “memory” dialing capabilities, you can storebasic 5100 operations in a speed dial location.
Examples:An emergency all call normally requires 3 key strokes (# # 0). When using the speed dialfunction, you can make an emergency all call by pressing a single designated key that is clearlymarked “All Call.”
An area or zone page normally requires pressing # 11 . . . # 34. However, if programmed in aspeed dial location, accessing an area or zone page requires pressing a single key.
Note 1: You may choose to store emergency telephone numbers in memory locations.However, memory dialing is provided only as a convenience. Simplex assumes noresponsibility for customer reliance on this memory feature.
Note 2: Speed dial numbers remain in memory 72 hours after telephone is disconnected.
Function Procedure
To Store Speed Dial Numbers 1. Lift handset or press [SPKR].Note: Brackets ( [ ] ) designate Receive dial tone.

Receive beep each time key pressed. To store dialing delay in phone number: Press [PAUSE] where delay needed. Each time [PAUSE] pressed, three-second dialing delay stored in dialing sequence. Each three-second pause counts as one digit. Memory locations can store up to 16 digits.
4. Press and release memory keywhere number stored. Receive twobeeps to confirm number storedcorrectly.
5. Hang up or press [SPKR] after number stored correctly.
Repeat steps 1 through 5 to store another number in memory.

ADVANCED OPERATION
The procedures described in this section of the Operating Instructions require a 5100Administrative Station and a 5100 BCS Operator Display.
• 5100 Administrative Station – An admin. station with a DTMF dial pad is used to selectoptions in the system. The station must possess Level 2 or 3 access (see page 1 for level accesslist).
• 5100 BCS Operator Display – The 5100 BCS Operator Display is a four-line by 20-characterliquid crystal display which is logically connected with an admin. station. The display willvisually list options and prompt the user through the system selection process.
Note: The 5130 System requires the 5100-Series Programming Tool for full programming.
DIAL PAD KEY ASSIGNMENTS
When using the 5100-Series System, various key combinations are required to perform specificfunctions. The key combinations consist of the “*” or “#” key followed by a digit. Figure 1depicts the key assignments of an admin. phone dial pad used to select various options.

DIAL PAD KEY USE
Movement Through the Screens
All menu selections are made by pressing a phone key - 1, 2, 3, ... 9 for the desired function(see Figure 1).
Pressing * 0 while viewing any screen will return the display to the previously displayed screen.
Scrolling
You may view menu and data screens with additional undisplayed lines by scrolling. Scrollingis accomplished with the center column of dial pad keys (2, 5, 8, and 0). A menu screen thatcontains additional entries will display a down arrow (↓) at the lower right corner of the screen.
• To view the previous line, press # 2; to view the next line, press # 8.• To return to the beginning of the list, press # 5.• To begin auto scrolling from the current line, press # 0.• To stop auto scrolling, press #.
Cursor Movement
Data screens that contain multiple fields or data positions allow left and right cursor movement.Cursor movement is controlled by the 1 and 3 keys on the dial pad.
• To move the cursor right to the next data position, press * 3.• To move the cursor left to the previous data position, press * 1.• To move the cursor right to the next data field, press # 3.• To move the cursor left to the previous data field, press # 1.
Some data screens require more than one line to display all the data. In which case, the cursorcommands will move the cursor to data locations on the next line(s)[char/field right commands] or on the previous line(s) [char/field left commands].
• Cursor movement is automatic in most cases during data entry.

GENERAL NOTES
(Use the Flowchart on Pages 10 and 11 when Configuring a 5100 System Via anAdministrative Station and an LCD Display Module.)
1. If you have questions about any box in the flowchart, refer to the number to theupper right of the box. Then:
A. Find that number on one of the subsequent pages.
B. Read the information associated with that number.
2. See ACCESS CODES FOR BOXES 2 THRU 62 for a listing of the codesrequired to access these boxes.
3. A 1/4 second long, 800 Hz tone indicates an accepted entry; a 1/2 second long,400 Hz tone indicates an unaccepted entry.
4. Press keys sequentially.
5. To scroll to the next field, press [#] [3]; to scroll back to the preceding field,press [#] [1].
6. When you read the terms “box [number] appears,” go to the box whose numberappears for further instructions.
7. To exit the program mode when:
the phone is off hook, hang up.the phone’s speaker is in use, press [ON/OFF] ([SPKR]).

FLOWCHART INFORMATION
Note: You can use any admin. phone to gain access to box 1 and boxes 3 thru 8; you can onlyuse admin. phones programmed for access 2 or access 3 to gain access to the remainingboxes.
• At initial system power-up, only the admin. phone on port 1 (Admin. Station # 501)is programmed for access 3.
To enter the Main Menu:
1. Pick up the admin. phone’s handset (or turn on the phone’s speaker by pressing[ON/OFF]).
2. Press [#] [9] [9].
• The Main Menu appears.
3. Select the desired menu choice by pressing:
[1] To select the Emergency menu (see box 2 below).[2] To select the Distribute Program Sources menu (box 3 appears).[3] To select the Set Up menu (box 9 via box 8 appears).
Use the admin. phone dialing plan ( # # 1 ... 4) rather than the emergency menu to issueemergency tones.
Note: The three audio sources (AM/FM tuner, tape deck, C.D. player, etc.) werejack-selected via the program monitor panel during system configuration, andconsequently vary between systems.
Select one of the three audio sources for control by pressing:
[1] To select audio source 1 (box 4 appears).[2] To select audio source 2 (box 4 appears).[3] To select audio source 3 (box 4 appears).
Select the actions to take with the previously selected audio source by pressing:
[1] To select the audio signal destination [Distribute Program X menu] (box 5appears).[2] To connect the audio source to the system.[3] To disconnect the audio source from the system.
Selects additional actions to take with the audio source.
1. Press:
[1] To remove all groups and stations from the distribution list (go to step 2).[2] To add all groups and stations to the distribution list (go to step 2).[3] To select Distribute Program X by Group (box 6 appears).[4] To select Distribute Program X by architectural room number (box 7appears).

Select the desired Set Up menu by pressing one of the following keys.

Select the desired manual system control mode by pressing one of the following keys.

This selection provides manual control of time schedules.
• It initially shows the current status of time schedule No. 1.• To view the status of time schedules 2 thru 8, either:
a. Scroll thru the schedules by repeatedly pressing [#] [8].b. Press the key representing the number of the desired schedule (2 - 8).
• The possible time schedule statuses are ON, OFF, and AUTO.• To change a time schedule’s status, press [*] [4] until the desired status appears. Then
either (a) press [*] [0] to return to box 10 or (b) exit the program mode.

Note: If ON, the daily schedule is overridden and signals sound in accordance withthe time schedule until midnight; if OFF, the time schedule is overridden andsignals do not sound at least until midnight. If AUTO, signals sound inaccordance with both the daily and the time schedule.
• Following an ON or OFF selection, the signals return to AUTO mode atmidnight.
This selection provides manual control of relays.
• It initially shows the current status of relay No. 1.• To view the status of relays 2 thru 8, either:
a. Scroll thru the relays by pressing [#] [8].b. Press the key representing the number of the desired relay (2 - 8)
• Possible relay statuses are ON, OFF, and AUTO.• To change a relay’s status, press [*] [4] until the desired status appears. Then either
(a) press [*] [0] to return to box 10 or (b) exit the program mode.
Note: If ON, the relay schedule is overridden and the relay remains ON untilmidnight; if OFF, the relay schedule is overridden and the relay remains OFFat least until midnight. If AUTO, the relay operates in accordance with therelay schedule.
• Following an ON or OFF selection, the relay returns to AUTO mode atmidnight.
This selection provides manual tone control.
1. Activate the time group(s) that are to sound the desired tone by pressing theappropriate key(s) (1 - 8).
• Only those groups whose numbers are displayed are active.• To activate an inactive group, or vice versa, press the number representing the
desired group.• Pressing [9] activates all groups.
2. Move the cursor under Tone by pressing [#] [3].
3. Select the desired tone by pressing:
[1] = 350 Hz [4] = 1250 Hz [7] = Single Chime High [2] = 440 Hz [5] = High/Low [8] = Single Chime Low [3] = 700 Hz [6] = Warble [9] = Dual Chime
4. Press the keys representing the desired signal duration (01 - 99).
• 01 - 98 = seconds; 99 = continuous
• Tones 3, 4, 7, 8, and 9 sound once, regardless of the duration entry.
5. Press [*] [4]. Then exit the program mode.
This selection provides a command for updating system time to that of an accurateoutside time source.
• The system must be connected to a modem and an operating outside line.
• Press [*] [4]. Then exit the program mode.
Note: When you press [*] [4], the 5100 dials the outside time source. The outsidetime source then updates your 5100 system’s time.

1. Alter the selected audio group by pressing:

• Box 22 appears (showing the time, time group membership, type and duration of theschedule’s first event).
Note 1: To examine the schedule, scroll thru the entries by pressing [#] [8].Note 2: To delete an entry, press the keys representing the time of the entry to be
deleted. Then press [*] [6] [*] [7].
To Change an Entry
1. Press [*] [5] (box 23 appears).2. Press the keys representing the hour and minute of the entry you want to change
(box 22 reappears).3. Follow the procedure that applies:
• If changing the entry’s time group affiliation:

To Add an Entry

reappears).3. Move the cursor under GROUPS.4. Press the key representing the time group the tone is to be affiliated with (1 - 8).5. Move the cursor under the 1st TONE field.6. This selection allows you to change the time a relay is to turn ON or OFF.
• Select the relay (1 - 8) whose ON/OFF times are to be scheduled (box 25 appears).
1. Select the functions the relay is to take by pressing:
[1] To select Track Time Group (box 26 appears).[2] To select Track Time Schedule (box 27 appears).[3] To select duty cycle operation (box 28 appears).
NOTE: The above selections require a serial card for operation.

Admin. Phone – A telephone connected to one of the four administrative ports used to answercalls from staff stations and to program the various features of the system.
All Call Page – A page distributed through all the speakers connected to the system.
Automatic Daylight Savings Time Parameters – The information required so the 5100 willknow when daylight saving time begins and ends, and if the system should correct the timeaccordingly.
Call Forward – Allows calls directed to one admin. phone to be sent to another phone.
Call Pick Up – Allows calls directed to one admin. phone to be answered at any other phone.
Call Waiting List – List of calls in the queue waiting to be answered by an admin. phone.
Cursor Movement – The cursor on the LCD of the Operator Display is moved to theappropriate location for programming by the keys on the admin. phone.
Dialing Plan – List of the numbers (codes) used to access functions within the system.
Distribute Program – The ability to distribute a program source, (for example, radio, tape,CD, etc.) to various stations in the system.
Emergency All Call – An emergency page distributed through the entire system; interrupts allother system functions.
Emergency Tones – Tones for emergency situations, distributed through the entire system.Examples: fire, tornado, emergency, all clear.
Hook Flash – Pressing the handset’s hook and releasing quickly (not held). Enables holdfunction for putting calls on hold.
Holidays – The system should use the holiday time schedule on these days instead of a normaltime schedule.
Main Menu – The first menu that appears when the correct access code has been entered fromthe admin. phone.
Manual Time Synch – The ability of the system to synchronize the internal time clock to anexternal contact closure from a time clock.
Off Hook – Lifting receiver of an admin. phone.
Operator Display – A four-line by 20-character liquid crystal display which is logicallyconnected with an admin. station. The display visually lists operations and prompts the userthrough the system selection process.

Page Groups – Specific groups of stations pre-programmed by the user to receive pages.
Program Distribution – The ability to define in software where a program source should beconnected.
Queue – List of calls waiting to be answered by an administrative telephone.
Relays – Electromechanical devices that provide contact closures for control of devicesexternal to the 5100 system (for example, bells, fans, inside and outside lights, and thermostats).
Relay Schedules – Schedules that control the relays in the system.
Schedule Events – A time on a time schedule when an event is supposed to occur.
Scrolling – Moving forward or backward through a list on the Operator’s Display.
Staff Station – A station from the 5100 system equipped with a speaker, call switch, or handset.Capable of placing and receiving calls from an admin. phone.
Temporary Page Group – A page group that is programmed from an admin. phone for theplacing of a one-time temporary page. It is removed when the page is complete.
Test Room – A room where exams or tests are conducted.
Time Schedule – A schedule directing pre-programmed events to occur at a specific time.
Transfer – The ability to take a call that has arrived at one admin. phone and connect it toanother admin. phone.
Track Relay – Assigning a relay to operate and release according to the times designated in atime schedule.
Zone Page – The ability to page a certain group of speakers in a specific zone. For example,the North Wing or Third Floor would be considered zones.
