These poems are cut crystal – prisms of intelligence, with a perception that
travels freely in every direction. I feel a true kinship with this work, which draws
on Eastern poetry's aesthetics and intentions without being imitative of its means.

Prowcza*
The stream gabs gate gate para gate
parasam gate bodhiswaha, the chime
of sheep bells follows, a man
in suspenders beats a seeder
with a hammer to remove rust.
Clear sounds travel far and disappear.
*Prowcza is a stream in Bieszczady Mountains between two peaks. It is marked by many small waterfalls and plant life which form a unique landscape.

Prowcza
Potok gada gate gate para gate
parasam gate bodhi swaha, owcze
dzwonki wtórują, mężczyzna
w szelkach ostukuje młotkiem
siewnik z rdzy. Dźwięki są wyraźne.
Czysto rozchodzą się w powietrzu i znikają.

Along Wattle Fences
abysmal fog
comes all of
a sudden on late peonies
I teach my hands not to
thawing weirs freeze again
the wind carries scares
for crows – how much
of me down there
the keys get it wrong
herbarium absorbs rust
8
Wzdłuż opłotków
przepastna mgła
z nagła
na spóźnione piwonie
oduczam dłonie
kostnieją grząskie groble
strachy na wietrze
na wróble ile mnie
jeszcze na dnie
klucze się mylą
zielnik nasiąka rdzą

I Move
Snow
and a deer’s white rump. In the forest
animal paths lead
to a watering place. Tracks – clear
series of marks. A hawk. Motionless
wings suspended in cold waves of air.
Takuan asks Basho for one true word.
10
Poruszam się
Śnieg
i białe lustro sarny. W lesie
zwierzęce ścieżki prowadzą
do wodopoju. Tropy – wyraźne
wielokrotnie odciśnięte. Jastrząb. Nieruchome
skrzydła po falach mroźnego powietrza.
Takuana prosi Basho o jedno
prawdziwe słowo.
11
At Dusk
Little girl in a pink tracksuit rakes
leaves. Her straight fringe reaches
exactly to the middle
of the rake handle. I wonder
how she will cope with all this autumn.
12
O zmroku
Dziewczynka w różowym dresie
sprząta liście. Jej równo przycięta
grzywka sięga akurat do połowy
trzonka grabi. Zastanawiam się
jak sobie poradzi z całą tą jesienią.

You Carried This Tale Once White Orthodox church in Międzybrodzie*.
A madness of mosquitoes. The taste of black fruits
called morus alba. Sticky sweetness on the tips of fingers.
The writer and the written – equally helpless.
Their hesitant hold above the edge
of the raging river San – recurrence
of things and issues makes a person dizzy.
A dog carries a half-dead fish,
rays of the sun filter through strands of hair.
*Międzybrodzie (in Polish “between fords”) – a small village near the town of Sanok in south-eastern Poland. Its unique location between fords on the river San at the foot of the Słonne Mountains makes for very picturesque scenery
14
Już raz niosłeś tę opowieść
Biała Cerkiew w Międzybrodziu. Komary
jak oszalałe. Smak czarnych owoców
morus alba. Lepka słodycz, na koniuszkach palców
piszący i pisany – tak samo bezradni.
Ich niepewny uchwyt nad krawędzią
dołem wzburzony San – powtarzalność
rzeczy i spraw przyprawia o zawrót głowy
pies niesie w pysku śniętą rybę
słońce prześwietla kosmyk włosów.
15
Bird Cherry Will Bloom Without You crickets still drone
polished in bronze
something stalls squeaks
and shatters to pieces
how to emerge smoothly
from mushrooming in Jawornik
through crosses and blackberries
with a black hand on the tongue
*Jawornik – a village located on the stream Jawornik in Sanok County in south-eastern Poland. After World War II all inhabitants were resettled to another place, therefore the place is now deserted.
16
Bez ciebie zakwitnie czeremcha
jeszcze świerszcze
skrzypią szlifowane w brązie
coś się zacina
zgrzyta i rozpada
jak gładko z grzybobrania
w Jaworniku wychynąć
pomiędzy krzyże i jeżynę
czarną ręką na język
17
Winter
The wind overturned an old gean tree
in the orchard. Raven’s sticky sweetness
like spectre on film. The neighbours' dog
came over. Her snout grizzled.
18
Zima
Wiatr przewrócił starą trześni
w sadzie. Lepka słodycz kruków
jak widmo na kliszy. Przyszła
suka od sąsiadów. Z posiwiałym pyskiem.

From Dream to Dream
The matter of the world is woven from a dream –
we cannot wake up in vain,
a floor creaks comely in a house
(before, there were dreams tasting of black
olives– insomnia, and those from depths of the ocean,
opalescent like a bloody pearl – oneiros.)
This time, layers overlap each other,
cracks more and more distinct – bones
or words shine through – from dream to dream.
20
Ze snu w sen
Materia świata jest utkana ze snu –
nie możemy się obudzić na próżno
w domu podłoga pięknie trzeszczy
(dawniej były sny o smaku czarnych
oliwek – insomnia i te z głębi oceanu
tęczujące jak krwista perła – oneiros ).
Tym razem warstwy nakładają się
szczeliny coraz wyraźniejsze – prześwitują
kości albo słowa: ze snu w sen.

Symballein
A woman with a hammer and a bunch of nails
In her left hand. Necessity is a state of existence
in which things cannot exist differently*. It’s none of our business.
A stone, a dog, a tree – always in its place.
Ready. And you’re next to this “fuck” on the wall
when you could’ve, if you could’ve, walked past the “Żabka” shop.
The choosing is the chosen. Dice rattle in a copper cup.
*My own translation from the Polish version of Cesare Ripa’sIconologia. I haven’tfound the English translation yet.
22
Symballein
Kobieta z młotkiem w dłoni i wiązką gwoździ
w lewej. Konieczność to taki sposób istnienia rzeczy,
że nie mogą one istnieć inaczej. I nic nam do tego.
Kamień, pies, drzewo – zawsze na swoim miejscu.
Gotowe. A ty obok tego "huja" sprayem na murze,
Choć mogłeś, czy aby na pewno, pasażem, gdzie Żabka.
Wybierający-wybierany. Grzechoczą kości w miedzianym kubku.
23
To Speak Differently In Cesare Ripa’s allegories, “Grammar” – a woman
holds in her hand a sheet of paper with the Latin inscription:
A learned and articulate voice spoken in a correct manner*. In her left
hand there is a whip. Milk pours from her breasts. Because
in mockery and making faces there’s something indecent,
contra naturam. And a sweet promise of return as well.
24
Mówić inaczej
W alegoriach Cezarego Ripy „Gramatyka” – niewiasta
z kartką w ręce, na której po łacinie czytamy: Uczone
słowo wyraźnie i należycie wymówione. W lewej dłoni
trzyma bicz. Z piersi obficie tryska mleko. Bo przecież
w przedrzeźnianiu i robieniu grymasów jest coś nieprzyzwoitego,
contra naturam. A zarazem słodka obietnica powrotu.
25
Talmud Wisdom
you open your eyes –
a little angel of formatting
puts his finger on your hippocampus
26
Light
Cat on a Ford bonnet. Licking
its fur. In front of a house
an old woman.
Hands on her knees,
a black blouse and a pale skirt.
From under closed eyelids – into the sun
I wish I could be in your head
to know if at the day’s end the light
becomes clearer.
28
Światło
Kot na masce forda. Wylizuje
futerko. Przed domem
stara kobieta.
Z rękami na kolanach
w czarnej bluzce i jasnej spódnicy.
Spod zamkniętych powiek – w słońce.
Chciałbym być w twojej głowie
wiedzieć, czy pod koniec dnia światło
staje się wyraźniejsze.

Ruta Ponders (A CertainWoman) To Jean Follain
She spreads a fan in the window
of a nonexistent house.
Should we think
of her at this precise moment
when other wrists
so white and limp.
Olive trees tremble motionless in the heat.
The wind rises – you don’t recognize
single leaves.
30
Ruta rozmyśla (o pewnej kobiecie)
Jeannowi Follain
Rozkłada wachlarz, w oknie
nieistniejącego domu.
Czy powinniśmy
myśleć o niej teraz właśnie
kiedy inne nadgarstki tak
białe i wiotkie.
Drzewa oliwne drżą
nieruchomo w upale.
Zrywa się wiatr – nie rozpoznajesz
pojedynczych liści.
31
Ruta Looks Out For The First Star On Christmas Eve
When Ruta laughs,
dimples appear on
her cheeks. Cuddled close
to a cold window – they become pink.
Beyond the ring of breath
there is whiteness.
So much whiteness – Ruta thinks
and looks at her hands.
White, they lie evenly on her knees
like wild animals ready to flee.
32
Ruta wypatruje pierwszej gwiazdki
Rucie, kiedy się śmieje
robią się w policzkach
małe dołki. Przytulone
do zimnej szyby – różowieją .
Po drugiej stronie, za obręczą
oddechu – jest biało.
Dużo tej bieli – myśli Ruta
i patrzy na swoje dłonie.
Białe – leżą równo na kolanach
jak obce zwierzęta gotowe do ucieczki.

Make Me
Crates of Egremont Russets. So absent
and so distant as if somebody else
had carefully stacked these apples up for winter.
This evening, in my place,
I felt acutely my shoulders, stars and the dog, tired
after a long walk. I pushed myself
into infinity in boots covered
with mud and grass.
I didn’t expect to discover
a way of living by being
interpreted.
34
Opowiedz mnie
Skrzynki szarych renet. Tak nieobecne
I dalekie, jakby ktoś inny układał
troskliwie na zimę. Tego wieczoru
na swoim miejscu, czułem dotkliwie
barki, gwiazdy i psa zmęczonego
dalekim spacerem. Pchałem się
w nieskończoność w butach
z resztkami błota I źdźbeł trawy.
Nie podejrzewając, że odkryję
sposób istnienia polegający na byciu
interpretowanym.
35
Apocryph Or A Postcard
A bit sorry. Your absence hurts.
From the point where I am, dear
roadsradiate.
38
Apokryf albo widokówka
Odrobinę żal. Twoja nieobecność boli.
Z punktu, w którym jestem, drogi
rozchodzą się promieniście.
39
Walking In My Shoes
Sleep doesn’t come. You, who read, are reached by the eye, too. Amid elm’s arms – shadow of a blurred streak – a black squirrel.
40
Walking in my shoes
Sen nie przychodzi. Ciebie, który czytasz,
także dosięga oko. Między konarami wiązu –
cień rozmytej smugi – czarna wiewiórka.
41
Nothing Happens
What can’t be named won’t happen
and everything that can be named will happen
sooner or later. In naming clouds
we’re on our own. Without our participation
nothing happens – dogs doesn’t growl, physicality
of trees rather dubious, even the girl
in the red dress waits patiently
at a street crossing. Look, we’re entangled
in the same magic.
44
w czerwonej sukience czeka cierpliwie
przed przejściem. Patrz, jesteśmy uwikłani
w tę samą magię.
45
Tracks
The ginger gleam
streaked out of the whiteness
(after all it’s December)
just for a moment. My boy, forget
this delight. It is fatal.
At the edge of the forest
you can hear the beaters.
48
Tropy
Ruda połyskliwość
wychynęła zza bieli
(mamy przecież grudzień)
tylko na chwilę. Zapomnij,
chłopcze, ten zachwyt. Jest
śmiertelny. Pod lasem
słychać nagonkę.
