Kaleigh Quimby, a fresh-man psychology major from Tarkio, was one of the 700 volunteers from Central Methodist University who did their part on Thurs-day, April 7, 2016, to, in the words of the CMU mission statement, “make a differ-ence in the world.”

The University called off classes for its annual Service Day, when students, faculty and staff are encouraged to engage in volunteer activi-ties to support a variety of

causes. Event coordinator Matt Williams, associate director for CMU’s Center for Faith and Service, esti-mated CMU dedicated more than 1,700 hours this year. Quimby volunteered with the Psychology Club at a lo-cal home. The Service Day projects included yard work at various homes, work at the food bank in Columbia, volunteering at Fayette Head Start, sewing pillow cases for children who are battling cancer, and more.

Ag students attend Missouri FarmBureau attend Youth Leadership Day

It was a busy day for 425 high school students and their chaperones who were involved in the Missouri Farm Bureau Youth Lead-ership Day April 14, 2016. For 22 years, the event has brought students and their legislators together at the State Capitol. Youth Lead-ership Day is sponsored by the Missouri Farm Bureau Promotion and Education.

Students were able to vis-it when both the House and Senate chambers were in session. Some groups chat-ted with their senators and representatives in hallways just ouside the chambers. Others were introduced from the House and Senate floors. In many ways, the visitors found out how hec-tic and important the busi-ness of lawmaking can be.

President Blake Hurst. They also heard from University of Missouri students and Farm Bureau Ambassadors Austin Stanton of Centralia and Nora Faris of Concor-dia before a special talk by featured speaker Saman-tha Warner. Warner stated that almost everything is connected to what she calls Team Agriculture. “There are so many different op-tions in agriculture...Fol-low your passion, find your place, and find a place on the Agriculture Team that fits your passion.”

Students attending from Atchison County were Tarkio students Ethan Riley, Karlly Eyman, and Kris Riley with advisor Dustin Lambertsen, as well as Fairfax students Gage Crowley and Alyssa Beck with advisor Jeremy Palmer. Costs for the school trip are underwritten by county Farm Bureaus and the MFB Foundation for Ag-riculture.

Tarkio High School seniorspreparing for end-of-school events

The 2015-16 school year is nearing its end and with that comes end-of-school events for Tarkio High School seniors. The students will be extremely busy these last two months.

Jr./Sr. PromSeniors will be attending

their last Tarkio High School Junior/Senior Prom on Sat-urday, April 30, from 8 to 11 p.m. at the Tarkio Commu-nity Building. A promenade, which is open to the public, will take place at 7 p.m. at the Tarkio High School Gym. The promenade will allow for all parents, family, and community members to take pictures of all prom at-tendees.

BaccalaureateSeniors will participate

in a baccalaureate service, sponsored by the Tarkio/Westboro Ministerial Alli-ance, on Sunday, May 1. A dinner for the seniors and their parents and grand-parents will be held at the Tarkio Assembly of God Church at 6 p.m., followed by the service at 7 p.m. Se-niors are to wear their caps and gowns.

SPrING coNcertThe Tarkio Junior High

Band and Choir and Tarkio Elementary 5th and 6th Grade Band Concert will be held Wednesday, May 4, at 6:00 p.m. in the auditorium. The THS Spring Concert and Awards’ Night for the high school band and choir will also be on May 4, but will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium.

to don their caps and gowns again on Friday, May 6, for professional class and indi-vidual pics at 1 p.m. at the school. This day also marks the last day of school for the seniors.

SeNIor trIPOn Sunday, May 8, the

seniors will embark on their senior trip to Branson, MO. The students are to arrive at 7:30 a.m. and the bus will leave at 8 a.m. sharp. The students will return on Wednesday, May 11.

PractIceOn Thursday, May 12,

from 8 to 11:30 a.m., the seniors will practice their walk-ins into the THS Gym for the graduation ceremony. All seniors must attend this practice.

aWarDS’ aSSemBlYOn Friday, May 13, the

seniors will again meet in the gym at 8 a.m. for a walk-through before being treat-ed to breakfast at the Tarkio United Methodist Church. At 1 p.m., the senior awards’ assembly will begin in the gym. (seniors are to meet at 12:30 p.m. in Mrs. Wen-nihan’s room). Attendance is required by the seniors and family and friends are also invited.

GraDuatIoNThe graduation ceremony

will take place on Sunday, May 15, at 2 p.m. in the THS Gym. The seniors are to meet in Mrs. Wennihan’s room between 1 and 1:30 p.m.

around goofy senior girl, Candace Campbell! If you really know her, you already know that her favorite ex-pression is “Seriously?” Candace is the daughter of Jason and Ruth Campbell of Tarkio. Candace has one sibling, Dylan, who is a fifth grader at Tarkio Elemen-tary. Candace wanted to mention her grandmother, Becky Campbell, too. She also wanted to give a shout-out to Jordyn Swalley, Ally Harkrider, and Paige Agnew, her best friends. I asked her if she wanted to include any-one else and she said her dog, Max. She just can’t get over how much he loves to escape from his pen.

Candace has been in the Tarkio R-I School District since she was in Honey Tree at the Tarkio United Methodist Church. She has played a huge role in our class from the very begin-ning. Most of our class mem-ories are because of her! Speaking of memories, Can-dace states that her favor-ite childhood memory was helping her grandma Becky cook delicious food. Candace has been involved in the lo-cal Special Olympics team, The Shining Stars, for four years. She enjoys playing basketball and is successful in her track event, throw-ing. She likes to brag about all the medals she receives after kickin’ butt.

Candace can be found rocking out to her favorite singer, Justin Bieber. She even got the opportunity to see J.B. perform live a few weeks back. She recalls it was the “greatest time of her

life.” Candace and her best friend, Jordan, like to hang-out on their free days and play dolls until the sun sets. She also told me that she likes to write in her diary when she is by herself. Can-dace is just like any modern-day teenage girl who enjoys her favorite television shows and movies. She likes to “hang out” with Sheldon and Penny while watching her favorite T.V. show, The Big Bang Theory. Her favorite movie is Brats and of course her favorite kind of music is any music that comes from Justin Bieber. Candace likes to munch down on mashed potatoes while watching the K.C. Royals or K.C. Chiefs with her dad. She has al-ways been about reading and her favorite series is the Goosebump books. Even though scary movies gives her goosebumps, she doesn’t mind scaring herself while reading a good book. Can-dace couldn’t pick out a fa-vorite memory from high school because she has way too many. After a few ex-amples, she decided that the Justin Bieber concert was her all time favorite (go fig-ure). She will also never for-get the time when her best guy friend, Connor Shaw, asked her to her senior prom. She told me that that was a dream come true. Talk-ing about Connor, her most embarrassing moments are when her best friend Jordan teases her about Connor.

Candace’s plans after high school are still unde-cided, but she is looking for-ward to graduation. After talking about the last few days of her senior year slow-ing down, she was all smiles

and said she was nervous, but excited. I asked Candace about some very irrelevent questions to get some funny responses out of her.

The Tarkio R-I School Board met Thursday, April 21, 2016, at Tarkio High School. The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. Present were Tarkio R-I Superintendent Dr. Pat Martin, Tarkio High School Principal Luke Cox, Car-rie Livengood, Steve Klute, Bruce Lang, Jamie Barnett, Lydia Hurst, Rachel Graves, Chris Yates, Corey Lesher, and Amy Fast.

Districts obligations were approved. The board mem-bers also approved summer school tutoring. The meeting

moved into closed session at 7:04 p.m. and came out of closed session at 9:11 p.m.

Rachel moved and Lydia seconded to terminate Amy Fast’s contract: Rachel - yes, Lydia - yes, Steve - yes, Corey - yes, Chris - yes, Ja-mie - yes and Bruce Lang abstained. Rachel moved and Bruce seconded to ap-prove Dr. Deborah Taylor as the new elementary princi-pal for the 2016-2017 school year. The motion carried 7-0. The meeting adjourned at 9:45 p.m.
