Course Description: Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is an academic elective course that prepares students for college readiness and success, and it is scheduled during the regular school day as a year-‐long course. Each week, students receive instruction utilizing a rigorous college preparatory curriculum provided by AVID Center, tutor-‐facilitated study groups, motivational activities and academic survival skills. The course emphasizes rhetorical reading, analytical writing, collaborative discussion strategies, tutorial inquiry study groups, preparation for college entrance and placement exams, college study skills and test-‐taking strategies, note-‐taking and research. The eleventh grade AVID Elective course is the first part in a junior/senior seminar course that focuses on writing and critical thinking expected of first-‐ and second-‐year college students. In addition to the academic focus of the AVID seminar, there are college-‐bound activities, methodologies and tasks that should be undertaken during the junior year to support students as they apply to four-‐year universities and confirm their postsecondary plans. Performance Outcomes and Skills: Tutorials: Once a week, the students will be expected to bring specific questions from their content classes and work together in groups to solve them. All students will be expected to present their point of confusion, participate in collaborative inquiry, and reflect on their learning. Some students may serve as a tutor on a rotating basis. The role of the tutor and group members is not to provide answers, but to help and guide students to find the answers themselves.
Critical Thinking Skills: Students will be engaged in activities designed to develop the learning process. These activities include close reading, writing assignments, Socratic Seminars, Philosophical Chairs Debates, group problem solving, and in class projects. Community Service: Each student will be required to complete community service hours every semester. These hours will be logged and signed off by a parent or guardian.
Academic Achievement and Integrity: Students are expected to perform at their fullest potential in all classes. Students will receive monthly grade checks. Students who do not maintain satisfactory academic marks will be placed on academic probation and must attend after school tutoring. Students are expected to complete all assignments with considerable effort and academic integrity. There is a zero tolerance policy for plagiarism and/or cheating as well as allowing others to plagiarize and/or cheat.

Classroom Procedures
1. You must bring your required materials to class each day. These materials include: • AVID Binder with pencil pouch • Weekly Calendar/Planner • Lined Notebook Paper • Pen or Pencil • Highlighter • iPad
All borrowed materials must be returned and will affect your work habits grade. You are responsible for replacing textbooks, notebooks and supplies that are lost, damaged or stolen.
2. Each class begins with a warm-‐up and ends with an exit slip. Start the warm-‐up as soon as the bell rings. Warm-‐ups and exit-‐slips cannot be made up due to absence or tardiness. If you are tardy, you must submit a tardy pass and sign and begin classwork immediately and without interruptions. Warm-‐ups and exit-‐slips are turned in at the end of every week.
3. You will keep track of assignments and due dates in your student calendar/planner. An outline of each day’s agenda, including assigned reading, classwork, projects and homework will be posted in the classroom. It is each student’s responsibility to complete each assignment when it is due and to maintain a record of points earned for each assignment.
4. Absences do not excuse you from any required assignments. When you have been absent, it is your responsibility to check the calendar for what you have missed and to turn in all assignments.
5. Make-‐up work, tests or quizzes must be done before school, after school, or during nutrition/lunch periods. It is your responsibility to schedule a date and time to make up an assignment, test or quiz.
6. The teacher dismisses class; not the bell 7. If you need to leave class (restroom, nurse, etc.) you must receive permission and take the classroom
pass. Only one student is allowed to leave class at any given time. No passes are issued the first 15 minutes or last 15 minutes of the class period.
8. Cooperation/Work Habits grades are earned for being prepared, participation in class activities, as well as exceptional student work and/or behavior. Being unprepared, refusing to participate, as well as inappropriate student work and/or behavior will result in an unsatisfactory mark on the grade report.
9. Electronics will be used for instructional purposes only. When not being used, students are expected to have their iPads face down on their desk. No cell phone usage or charging is allowed.
Teacher Availability I am available before school, during lunch, and after school for any student who wishes to stop by for questions. Tutoring is also available after school, if needed. Although this course is rigorous and challenging, I have confidence that every student can and will succeed. I’m looking forward to a year of achievement, success and learning.
I truly believe in your potential. I want you to believe in it, too! Have an awesome year!
