[25 marks]
Questions 2631 are based on the following passage.
1 There was once a time when driving to Sungai Buloh was a walk in the
park. Today, heavier traffic and the mushrooming of residential estates have
changed the pace. During weekdays, driving to Sungai Buloh which normally
takes about ten minutes on a Sunday is a nightmare. The roads are narrow in
parts and heavy vehicles squeeze one another for space. 5
2 Eighty years ago, a group of concerned citizens drew up plans for a self-
Contained village to house people suffering from leprosy. The 1926 Leper
Enactment Act saw the establishment of the Lepers Settlement in Bukit
Lagong Village, Sungai Buloh, in Selangor. For decades, Sungai Buloh had the
reputation of being a leper colony. Opened in August 1930 with about 2,000 10
patients, now there are only 340 patients, thanks to medical advancement to
eradicate the disease.
3 Sungai Buloh was named after the fast-growing bamboo but a visitorwould be hard put to find the plant growing on its sprawling green acres. Today,
with the Leprosy Control Centre superseded by a magnificent new hospital 15
directly opposite it, Sungai Buloh is rapidly shedding its old image. However,
its reputation for being one of the best places to shop for plants and flowers
remains intact.
4 A long-time nursery owner claims there are easily more than 100
nurseries though a more realistic figure would be 60. The nurseries have roots 20
going back to more than 40 years. The single-line paths that twist and turn
throughout the undulating land open up vistas of natural beauty. The
pollution-free atmosphere is taken for granted and the clouds embracing the
gentle slopes are like floating cotton balls constantly changing shapes.
Dotting the quiet and unobtrusive lanes beyond the bigger nurseries are 25

wooden houses that seem devoid of human presence. It seems to be a land
than man and time have forgotten. In reality, the population is pretty small.
There is a smattering of coffee shops with customers attired in singlets and
shorts. Strangers are given a cursory once-over and dismissed as harmless
curious onlookers. The charming environment with its tranquil ambience is 30
invigorating to most city residents.
5 Five years ago, there were plans for a facelift for Sungai Buloh. Large
portions of Sungai Buloh were cleared for the construction of new buildings
and modern amenities. Three years ago, there was an unsuccessful propo-
sal to the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage to gazette Sungai Buloh as a 35
national heritage site. Development blueprints are presently in various stages
of progress.
6 Sungai Buloh, once nicknamed the Valley of Hope, has vestiges of its
history represented by the half-dilapidated homes pockmarking the fertile
land. The backwaters of Sungai Buloh have wide swathes of nursery plots 40
that cater to visitors from far and wide whose desire is to beautify their
gardens. Within sight of a lonely Anglican church are several pieces of flat
land given over to the breeding of short grass.7 Sungai Buloh has four main schools. A KTM commuter station links
the town to the Rawang-Seremban line. With a population hovering round the 45
half million mark, Sungai Buloh, the Garden City, is earmarked for mega
projects. Plans are afoot to bring the town into the foyer of the 21st century as
is transforming the Sungai Buloh-Kepong Road into a six-lane dual carriage-
way. In the pipeline are an international convention centre and a batik centre.
8 Whatever the future holds for Sungai Buloh, as long as the flowers 50
bloom in the gardens of all the nurseries and the fragrances waft throughout
the Klang Valley, Selangor residents will continue to hold the charming little
town of Sungai Buloh close and dear in their hearts.
