Iwas trying to understand what this Go green is all about and the fuzz surrounding it. Go-greens commercial nt really be understated. Any product tagged Go green claims a premium price in the market as compared to its peers
ow this tag is being exploited by the business world would be a no-brainer. People have started talking about climate ch
obal warming, saving the earth, importance of growing more trees, recycling resources, conserving energy, leaving a better w
r our children and grandchildren like never before. Some scientists even claim that the pace at which the arctic glaciers
ould deplete entire land mass in few decades. Some other scientists refute the claims and there is a lot of debate on this iss
uldnt really separate the facts and the myths on this issue. So I decided to do some thinking, based on common s
rspective and write this article based on my research.
Let me share some basic understandings on Go Green, which simply means reducing the carbon footprint. Now w
arbon footprint mean. Carbon footprint is the total set of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions caused by an organization, eoduct or person. For simplicity of reporting, it is often expressed in terms of carbon dioxide. So what is a greenhouse gas? T
in simple terms, greenhouse gasesare a set of gases present in the earths atmosphere that aide to greenhouse effect
eenhouse effect is a process by which thermal radiation from earths surface is absorbed by the atmospheric greenhouse g
d is re-radiated back into the earths surface. This helps in maintaining the earths normal temperature that we live in. If no
ese gases and their effect on earths surface, the earth would have been uninhabitable because of relatively lower temperat
llowing are the four major greenhouse gases and their percentile contribution to the greenhouse effect: water vapor (367
rbon dioxide (926%), methane (49%), ozone (37%).
Greenhouse gases are emitted through the production and consumption of fuels, manufactured goods, materials, w
nstruction of roads, buildings, bridges and also through mining and land clearance. As the emission of greenhouse g
creases, the density of them in the atmosphere increases which in turn re-radiates more thermal radiation back into the e
rface thereby raising the surface temperature of the earth. This partly explains what is global warming.Lets get another perspective of this issue, going by recorded history; the population in the year 1804 is roughly abo
lion. The current population stands at about 7 billion. And we humans depend completely on the nature and its resource
ery walk of our lives. Especially our dependence on non-renewable resources is even more alarming, as you know; they ar
oing to be there forever. We consume a lot and we dispose a lot, unmindful of what we are doing to the environment that w
ing in. The more we consume and dispose, the more the greenhouse gas emission and the more the increase in temperature
ot everything about global warming and climate change can be discarded as myths. Our mindless consumption and dispo
titude have already started having its effect on our environment. Great Pacific Garbage Patch is a classic example of one
titude. Its a "plastic soup" that primarily has our disposed wastes which are floating in the Pacific Ocean. With our rut
nsumption, we are not only risking our eco-system, we are risking our planet and our ability to live on it.
Now I get some idea of what this go-green is all about, but how can we support Go Green. Well, it is an attitudinal shmindset change and it cant happen overnight. We cant really study every process involved in the making of every product
e consume, evaluate the amount of greenhouse gases in that process and decide whether to use it or not. But we can
aking our choices by using more eco-friendly product and by being shrewder with energy consumption choices. Taking a
ansport system instead of a car for work, taking our own eco-friendly bags for supermarket purchases, using low p
onsumption lamps, leaving your computers switched off at the end of the dayare some of the day-to-daygo-greentas
uld engage ourselves with.
Lets make our contributions for the better world, our future generations will live in, for what we have now was given
our ancestors. It becomes our duty to safeguard what we have and pass it on to our children for they have every right to e
tures wealth and beauty without harming her. Tomorrow may be too late!!
