Polypropylene is a member of the polyolefinfamily and is used in a wide variety ofapplications from acids and alkalies to organicsolvents and even pure water. PP is one of thebest materials to use for systems exposed tovarying pH levels, as many plastics do nothandle both acids and bases well. It is notrecommended for use with strong oxidizingacids, aromatics and chlorinated hydrocarbons.PP is ductile at ambient temperature anddemonstrates good impact strength. It also hasgood thermal stability up to 90oC (194oF)especially in comparison to otherthermoplastics such as HDPE and PVC.
Polypropylene is available in two grades: • homopolymer (PPH) made from Type I resin
according to ASTM D 4101, produced from100% propylene monomer
• copolymer (PPR) made from Type II resinproduced from 94% propylene with 6%ethylene. Copolymer resins generally exhibitbetter impact strength.
Polypropylene (PPR and PPH) comply with therelevant food regulations (according OENORMB 5014 Part 1, FDA, BGA, KTW guidelines).
As a result of specific customer requirementsspecial blends of PP such as flame retardant andelectro-conductive PP have been developedand are available.
PPR, Black: Black pigment is added to the PPwhich gives it much better UV resistance.
PPR, Natural (unpigmented): Contains nocolour additives and can be used for high puritywater piping systems. This material is not UVresistant.
PPH-s: Additives make this PP more fireretardant. It also gives the PP higher stiffness sothis is well suited for ventilation. This material

PPR-el: Due to the high carbon blackcontent, PPR-el is conductive as well as UVresistant. Electro-static charges generatedby the flow of fluids or dust can arise inthermoplastic piping systems and this willenable a connection to ground.

Unpigmented Polypropylene is produced fromhigh-purity virgin random copolymer made upof 94% propylene with 6% ethylene accordingto ASTM D 4101 and DIN 16774 resulting in anextremely pure product. UPP shows excellentpurity levels when tested in standard staticleach tests (better than High-purity PVC) andhas a superior surface quality (Ra = 0.4 to 1.5µm), making it ideal for high-purity systems.
Unpigmented Polypropylene (UPP) complieswith the relevant food regulations (accordingOENORM B 5014 Part 1, FDA, BGA, KTWguidelines).

PVDF (Polyvinylidene fluoride) is anextremely pure fluorocarbon polymer thatdoes not contain UV stabilizers, thermostabilizers, softeners, lubricants or flame-retardant additives. It is particularly suitablefor ultra-pure water and for the transport ofclear chemical liquids in the semi-conductorindustry. It is recognized for its highmechanical strength over a large workingtemperature range, excellent resistance tomost corrosive chemicals and many organicsolvents, excellent abrasion resistance andexcellent against the effects of gammaradiation.
PVDF offers excellent fire protectionwithout flame-retardant additives (V-Orating according to the UL-94 vertical flametest) and during combustion has only aslight amount of smoke development.
PVDF is non toxic and imparts no odours ortastes into the fluid and conforms with FDAregulations as outlined in Title 21, Chapter1, Part 177-2510 (contact with food).

AirPro® piping systems are specifically designedfor compressed air. It is made of blue highdensity polyethylene (HDPE) resin. AirPro® isextremely ductile, light weight, corrosionresistant, and has minimal system pressuredrop. Installation is faster, more flexible andinstalled cost is lower than metal systems.AirPro® is not affected by condensate and moistenvironments which cause most metal systemsto scale, pit or corrode, resulting in increasedsystem pressure drop. It is chemically resistantto synthetic and mineral oils in the air releasedby compressors1.

The Chemline PE and PP Mineline piping features excellent abrasion resistance superior to thatof any other plastic, steel and lined/unlined concrete pipes in mining slurry applications. Anextended operating temperature range, chemical resistance and bonded layers of similarmaterials means that pressure ratings are met, abrasion is reduced and UV attack is minimized.Welding and installation is quick and easy, ensuring a long service life with very little down-time. Delamination and stress due to differential expansion rates are also eliminated.

Dual-containment systems are engineered toprotect our eco-system from the dangers ofexposed aggressive chemicals. They should bespecified in areas where there are chemicalstransported above work stations, undergroundor for any other potential safety hazards due toexposure to the media. Dual-Containment isavailable in PE, PP, PVDF, and ECTFE forcontainment (outer) pipes and carrier (inner)pipes. This mix and match feature allows systemdesigners to specify pipe material and ratingsbased on media and pressure changesthroughout an entire system.
Welding MethodsThe welding methods used depend on thecombination of the containment pipe andcarrier pipe.
Staggered welding is used when containmentpipe and the carrier pipe are made of differentmaterials and therefore have different weldingparameters (time, temperature and pressure). The carrier pipe will be welded first before thecontainment pipe.
Simultaneous welding is used when bothcontainment pipe and carrier pipe are made ofthe same material and therefore have similarwelding parameters (time, temperature andpressure).
System ComponentsContainment Pipe – Provides leak protectionCarrier Pipe – Transportation of the mediaAnular Space – Area between the carrier andcontainment pipes where leak detection takesplaceLeak Detection System – Sensor and indicator
Leak DetectionAn important aspect of dual-containmentsystems is the specification for leak detection, especially in buried systems. Pressurized systemsshould have automated leak detection wired toshut-off valves in case a leak is detected. Adrainage systems should have at least a manualleak-detection system in place.
Leak Detection Systems Types:
Manual – Manual operation, locates leaks withina zone, is cost effective and relatively simpleengineeringElectronic Low-Point – Automated operation, locates leaks within a zone, is cost effective andrelatively simple engineeringContinuous Cable – Precise automated detectionfor leaks and requires more engineering forinstallation
