Pro Bowl safety Michael Griffi n, Titans #33, visited Stoner Creek Elementary in Mt. Juliet last week, leading the Titans Caravan XII. Along with six-time Pro Bowl mascot T-Rac and the “Voice of the Titans” Mike Keith, Griffi n emphasized the need to stay healthy by exercising. Through the NFL’s “Play 60” program, the Titans will campaign throughout the 2009 season to get kids to spend at least 60 minutes each day in active play or exercise. The crucial message will be delivered in hopes of making the current youth the most active and healthy generation ever. Photo by Tomi L. Wiley

At fi rst glance, Savannah Hope Swandal looks like any other 3rd grader at Mt. Juliet Elementary. She is an outgoing, beautiful, 9-year-old little girl with an infectious laugh and a smile that will melt your heart. She enjoys being outdoors, playing with her family and friends, dancing, singing, riding her bike, listening to music and going to church. What makes Savannah unlike her fellow students and classmates at MJE is the fact that she’s fi ghting cancer for the third time in only 3 years. She was initially diagnosed in Feb. 2006 at the tender age of 5 with Stage IV metastatic alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma. This type of childhood cancer is very rare and aggressive with a poor medical prognosis. Savannah had to undergo 10 months of intense chemotherapy, 6 weeks of radiation & several surgical

procedures at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital in an effort to get rid of the cancer. In January 2007, she and her family were thrilled when she reached remission. She enjoyed almost 1 ½

years of being cancer-free until she relapsed in April 2008. Surgery to remove an abdominal tumor was performed and different chemo drugs were administered for 10 months to try to get rid of the cancer again. Luckily, she was told she had no evidence of disease in Feb. 2009. Unfortunately, her cancer returned after only 8 weeks off treatment. On April 6, 2009, she began a new chemo regimen that is given for 5 consecutive days every 3 weeks. Savannah is unable to go to school during each week of chemo and is homebound when her blood counts are so low that it is dangerous for her to be

out in public. S a v a n n a h ’ s immediate family consists of her mother and step-father, Robin and Bruce Landes, stepsister, Ashley Landes, father and step-mother, John and Taunya

Swandal, step-brother, Joey Fishbeck and half-sister, Emma Swandal. They feel blessed for each moment they’re given and request prayers of the community as Savannah’s fi ght is far from over. A booth is being provided by Arby’s in Hermitage, located at 3400 Lebanon Road near Stone’s River bridge, Kohl’s and Target, on Thursday, April 23, from 5 until 8 p.m. “Arby’s Savannah Spirit Night” is a kickoff to the YMCA

Country Music Kids’ Marathon and a time when you can eat with your family and support Savannah along with her Country Music Kids Marathon MJE Superstars. The event is endorsed by the Mt. Juliet Elementary PTO and a percentage of all food sales will go to the Savannah Hope Swandal Benefi t Fund. The Savannah Hope Swandal Benefi t Account is set up at Sun Trust Bank to assist the family with medical bills and expenses. Donations are greatly appreciated and can be made at any branch. You can follow Savannah’s progress and leave messages of support at www.caringbridge.org/visit/savannahswandal.

Charges of vehicular homicide have been fi led against a Mt. Juliet man who is suspected of striking a motorcycle driven by another Mt. Juliet man on Friday night. The victim, identifi ed as Bruce J. Holloway, 49, of Stewarts Ferry Pike, was killed in the accident which occurred about 6:45 p.m., Friday on Stewarts Ferry Pike. Trooper Raymond Gaskill of the Tennessee High Patrol said in his report that a 1999 Dodge

Dakota pickup truck, driven by Brian Jason Duffey, 29, of Corinth Road, Mt. Juliet, was traveling east on Stewarts Ferry Pike and allegedly passed several vehicles on double yellow lines as Holloway, who was operating a 2005 Yamaha XVA motorcycle was turning into a driveway. The motorcycle was stationary when it was struck, the trooper said, adding that Holloway was wearing a helmet. Duffey was not injured in the accident. He was wearing a seat belt. A passenger in his vehicle, a

male juvenile, age 9, was also uninjured. Gaskill noted in his report that alcohol was believed to be involved on the part of Duffey and a blood alcohol test was requested. Duffey has been charged with one count of vehicular homicide, one count of reckless endangerment and one count of driving on a revoked license. He was arrested and bond was set was at $56,500 which was posted and he was released on Saturday from jail. He is to appear in court on May 27.

The City of Mt. Juliet’s strict Town Center Overlay District guidelines are playing an important part in the renovation of a building recently purchased by the City, which will have to make some major changes after construction on N. Mt. Juliet Road is completed in order to keep in compliance. Mt. Juliet Municipal-Regional Planning commissioners approved Thursday night requested variances to the Archer building, located at 2365 N. Mt. Juliet Road, with the conditions that parking remain the same until the road construction is fi nished, landscaping be applied to the building once the road construction is fi nished, and that it conforms to the Overlay District guidelines if those still exist at the time the construction is fi nished. Planning Commissioner Ed Hagerty abstained from the vote. The requested variances will be recommended by the planning commission to the city commission for approval. The guidelines are currently under review, and could possibly be removed, by a City committee. “We want to make sure City staff abides by its own rules,” remarked City Manager Randy Robertson of the variances. P l a n n i n g commissioners approved a major amendment to the Final Master Development

Plan for the Paddocks development on N. Mt. Juliet Road, which included a request to increase signage square footage per sigh and number of signs on the front façade for the Wal-Mart and Lowe’s building. The issue centered around changes made to the City sign ordinance, which decreased the size of a sign late last year. The size of a sign correlates to the square footage of the building, and the proposed signage for Lowe’s would be too small for the size of the building under the new sign ordinance. The original signage for Lowe’s was approved at the February 2007 planning commission meeting, according to representatives, and the new dimensions submitted are “consistent with the spirit of your sign ordinance.” The major amendment was approved by the commission as a positive recommendation to the city commission, with Hagerty and Planning Commissioner Lori Landry voting against it. Review of the Final Plat for the Mabry property, located on Lebanon Road, was approved. Also approved was the Site Plan for the Bond Memorial Chapel located at 1098 Weston drive. P l a n n i n g commissioners unanimously approved for a positive recommendation to the city commission a text amendment to the City Zoning Ordinance regarding sidewalk signs outside the right of way. Lebanon attorney

Jere McCulloch, representing the developers Bel Air at Beckwith, requested a work session to meet with City staff and work on a preliminary plat and PUD for approval.

Gov. Phil Bredesen released last week a fi nal list of projects to be funded with American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds (Recovery Act), proposed bridge bonds and TDOT’s regular funding mechanisms.

The three-tiered program represents more than 450 projects statewide touching every county in Tennessee. Included in the proposal, which has been presented to the Legislature, are 122 highway and bridge projects in TDOT’s Region Three alone. That number includes eight projects in Wilson County. “The Recovery Act is fundamentally about creating and retaining jobs during one of the toughest economic times our nation and state have faced since the Great Depression,” Bredesen said. “This three-tiered program represents a record investment in Tennessee’s transportation system. The Recovery Act, along with the bridge bonding and TDOT’s regular program, will put thousands of Tennesseans to work rebuilding and strengthening one of Tennessee’s largest economic drivers, our transportation system.” TDOT’s Region Three includes Bedford, Cheatham, Davidson, Dickson, Giles, Hickman, Houston, Humphreys, Lawrence, Lewis, Lincoln, Macon, Marshall, Maury, Montgomery, Moore, Perry, Robertson, Rutherford, Smith, Stewart, Sumner, Trousdale, Wayne, Williamson and Wilson counties. “Not only will these transportation projects help create or save tens of thousands of jobs for Tennesseans, the end result of this investment will be a more reliable transportation system,”

said TDOT Commissioner Gerald Nicely. “This three-tiered program represents a responsible, balanced and community based approach to transportation. Years of planning and study have gone into each of the projects funded for construction.” There are 50 projects in TDOT’s Region 3 that will be funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, including a project to construct a Bypass around Shelbyville which has received strong support from state and local leaders. Tennessee received $572 million in Recovery Act funds of which $85.8 million were distributed directly to the state’s eleven Metropolitan Planning Organizations and the City of Murfreesboro leaving $486.2 million for distribution by TDOT. Another 45 bridge repair or replacement projects in Region Three are funded through bridge bonds and another 27 projects are funded through TDOT’s traditional Three-Year Multimodal Work Program. The Legislature is currently considering the transportation budget for approval. TDOT will let to contract all Recovery Act projects in May and June. A complete listing of all projects identifi ed for funding is posted on the TDOT website at www.tn.gov/tdot. For more information on Tennessee’s transportation portion of the Recovery Act funds, visit www.tn.gov/tdot/recovery.

As the old saying goes, “a change will do you good,” and for one Wilson County entertainer a major transition has resulted in a new sound, a new partner and a new chapter in the long story of his life in the music business.

Keith Burns was a founding member of Trick Pony, a country band formed in 1996 that also included Ira Dean and Heidi Newfi eld. The band recorded and toured together for 10 years, putting out such hits as “Pour Me” and the Grammy Award-nominated “Just What I Do,” until Newfi eld announced in October 2006 that she was leaving the bad to pursue a solo career. Burns, who sang lead vocals on “Just What I Do,” and Dean briefl y replaced Newfi eld, but the group disbanded for good last year. “The thing about Trick Pony was that we, and I, always fi nd a niche, a door, and go through it,” Burns said last week. “This is something new for me, but it’s an established niche of country music – the duo.” The new duo is Burns and Michelle Poe, who has played bass with acts such as Dierks Bentley and Hank

Williams Jr. They were joined by producer James Stroud, and the connection between the two was instant and evident, Burns said. “She has these smooth and silky vocals, and mine are more rough and raspy,” he said. “I call it the silky and scratchy show.” And a show is what the duo offer, Burns said,

a true duet with the vocals split evenly between them. He likened their music and rapport to Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton, Sonny and Cher. The duo is touring with a four-piece band, which offers a more intimate and classic country sound. “It’s that kind of country music with new technology,” Burns explained. “Classic duo material with today’s modern sound.” Burns said it took around a year to write all of the songs on the new album. He co-wrote all of the songs, and Poe co-wrote six of them. He said they are focusing on their fi rst single, “It’s Always a Woman,” and crisscrossing the country in a grassroots tour. “We’re playing smaller clubs and music festivals,” Burns said. “We’re doing a two and a half month radio tour – just going to the stations, plugging in and playing. And with me and

Michelle, there’s a lot of back and forth, talking and carrying on during the show, that goes on and keeps it entertaining.” Burns said such a radio tour and face-to-face meeting is how Trick Pony started, and he said he still has a relationship with his former bandmates – he even co-wrote Newfi eld’s new

single, “What Am I Waiting For?” Burns has had songs recorded by a variety of other artists, including Hootie & the Blowfi sh, Anita Cochran,

Silver Springs Baptist Church, located at Lebanon Road at Benders Ferry in Mt. Juliet, begins four days of revival Sunday morning, April 26. The meeting times are 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Sunday morning, 6:00 p.m., Sunday evening, and Monday through Wednesday, 7 p.m. Preaching for the week will be W.D. Thomason, the former pastor of Green Hill Baptist Church (1987-1997. Because of attendance increase, under Bro. Thomason’s leadership, Green Hill built their current worship facility. He and his wife, Jackie, now make their home in Murfreesboro, Tennessee and Bro. Thomason continues to be active in ministry currently serving as interim pastor of First Baptist Church, Woodbury. After leaving Green Hill to serve in Columbia, Thomason returned to serve as an associate pastor at Immanuel, Lebanon, before “retiring” the fi rst time before being called back into service as the pastor of Lebanon’s Calvary Baptist

Church. Bro. Thomason’s service to Middle Tennessee began more than thirty years ago coming to First Baptist Church, Joelton after completing his education at Southwestern Baptist

Theological Seminary, Fort Worth, Texas. He was next called as pastor of First Baptist Church, Smyrna before coming to Mt. Juliet. It is so rewarding.” The Teacher of the Year Awards banquet honored the top 27 educators from area schools, ranging from kindergarten teachers to guidance counselors. Station Camp vs. MJ In the fi rst match-up this season between these two squads, the Bears got off to a slow start at the plate and in the fi eld. They found themselves in the unusual position of trailing on the scoreboard midway into the contest. Trailing 7-5 in the bottom of the sixth inning and time expiring, Kevin Combs led off and was hit by a pitch. Brady Cole followed with a single. The speedy Mikey Brown then lined a rocket over the left fi elder’s head for a triple tying the game. Austin Dyer’s third hit of the day, a one out infi eld single scored Brown from third for the go ahead run. Mt. Juliet vs. Gallatin The fi rst game of Saturday’s twinbill was a classic pitcher’s duel. The contest was tied 0-0 going into the third when MJ’s lead-off hitter, Eric Owens drew a one out walk and advanced to third on Forrest Goodwin’s single. Owens was thrown out at the plate on a passed ball that took an unusually hard bounce directly back to the catcher. Kevin Combs followed, hitting the ball very sharply and deep, but directly at the right fi elder ending the scoring threat. The lone run for Gallatin came in the bottom of the fourth when their batter advanced to second on an overthrown ball at fi rst. He then took third on a wild pitch, scoring on a sacrifi ce fl y to left. In the sixth, with two

outs, Zach Tompkins lined his second hit of the game into centerfi eld. Brandon Henson drew a walk. Caleb Chowbay hit a grounder between fi rst and second that looked certain to go to the outfi eld which would have scored the tying run from second. Chowbay went the distance for Mt. Juliet throwing a no-hitter and in one of the rare ironies of baseball, having the win go to the opposing pitcher.

Beech vs. Mt. Juliet The fi nal game of the day found the Bears trailing 3-0 midway into the contest. Coach Johnston decided to roll the dice and in the most exciting play of the day, sent Bates on an attempt to steal home. As Bates came racing down the line, the Beech pitcher lost composure and balked allowing the tying run. The game remained tied until the bottom of the seventh when Brett Smith drew a walk and stole second. Catcher Brendan Wright then drew an intentional walk. A passed ball allowed the runners to advance setting up Brandon Henson’s well executed game winning bunt single. Austin Dyer took the win on the hill for the Bears in relief of Brady Cole. “It was obviously disappointing losing the second game of the tournament 1-0 with such a good effort on the mound and a couple bad breaks costing a chance at playing in the championship game,” Coach Johnston said. “I was very happy with how our team bounced back in

the second game to beat Beech.” The JV squad will wrap up their season with fi ve games this week against district foes Gallatin, Wilson Central and Beech.

Freshman Zach Tompkins is airborne in a close call against Beech. The MJHS JV squad competed last weekend in the “White House JV Tournament.” The team is comprised of 21 freshman and sophomores. Photo by David Wright

Glass Half-Full Versus Glass Half-Empty Is there any benefi t in looking at a glass as half full over a glass as half empty? I think there is. I believe it is always best to live life to the very fullest in a positive manner. It is extremely easy to get down, depressed and frustrated over the small things in life and view life as a half empty glass. My challenge is for you to start looking at the glass as half full all while attempting to fi gure out how to fi ll the glass until it runs over. For example: I recently had someone tell me how frustrated they were to fi nally have places to shop, eat and be entertained only to have to sit in traffi c for 5 to 10 minutes to get there. Like a bolt of lightning it hit me, I suddenly came back with an actual reasonable thought. I advised the person who was frustrated about sitting in traffi c to compare it to what they had to do in years past. Think about it this way. Before we had all of the shopping, eating and entertainment options here in great Mt. Juliet we would all fi nd ourselves having to travel to Rivergate, Hickory Hollow, Cool Springs, Bellevue and beyond. All of these locations required at least a thirty minute or better drive, not to mention the gas usage and wear and tear on you and your car. Now we can simply drive anywhere in our own community, sit in just a little traffi c for now, and get to our destination in as little as 5 to 10 minutes. So what used to take us 30 plus minutes to get to now only takes 5 to 10 minutes on a bad day. Now think of how easy this process will be when our roadway is widened. It only gets better when you put things into perspective. Another example: When I was a kid it took forever to make popcorn. You would have to get out the iron skillet, oil and popcorn, heat the stove and oil. Then you would put all of the ingredients together and work yourself to a frazzle to make simple popcorn. It took like twenty minutes or better to make popcorn not to mention a big mess. Now you just simply pop a bag in the microwave and wait less than 3 minutes for popcorn. The message here is that if you stand in front of the microwave and watch the timer it will seem like an eternity, when in reality it is only taking less than 3 minutes. That can be the way sitting in traffi c for 5 to 10 minutes may seem, but it’s still better than a thirty plus minute drive. Life is better when we look at life as a full glass. We are blessed in so many ways; we just have to take time to realize it. So now when you are sitting in traffi c for 5 to 10 minutes, think of all the time you are saving, not to mention what you are doing for you and your community. In closing, your glass is now nearing the top…would you like a lid or bigger glass?
