Lawful Order, never use a Direct Order.
Professionalism: Never eat, drink, smoke, dip, while doing your

HELPFUL COUNSELING TIPS
Eye contact. Maintaining eye contact without staring helps show sincere interest.
Occasional breaks of eye contact are normal and acceptable, while excessive breaks, paper
shuffling, and clock-watching may be perceived as a lack of interest or concern.
*Body posture. Being relaxed and comfortable will help put the subordinate at ease.
However, a too-relaxed position or slouching may be interpreted as a lack of interest.
*Head nods. Occasionally head nodding indicates paying attention and encourages the
subordinate to continue.
*Facial expressions. Keep facial expressions natural and relaxed to signal a sincere interest.
*Verbal expressions. Refrain from talking too much and avoid interrupting. Let the
subordinate do the talking, while keeping the discussion on the counseling subject.

HELPFUL COUNSELING TIPS
*Boredom. Drumming on the table, doodling, clicking a ballpoint pen, or resting the
head in the palm of the hand.
*Self-confidence. Standing tall, leaning back with hands behind the head, and
maintaining steady eye contact.
*Defensiveness. Pushing deeply into a chair, glaring at the leader, and making sarcastic
comments as well as crossing or folding arms in front of the chest.
*Frustration. Rubbing eyes, pulling on an ear, taking short breaths, wringing the hands,or frequently changing total body position.
*Interest, friendliness, and openness.Moving toward the leader while sitting.
*Anxiety. Sitting on the edge of the chair with arms uncrossed and hands open.

HELPFUL COUNSELING TIPS
If a soldier refuses to sign a DA Form 4856:
*Have the next Soldier in the NCO Support Channel or Chain of Command counsel the
Soldier and document the reasons the Soldier refused to sign the counseling.
*Have a witness (a disinterested person) come in and in the presence of the soldier
(witness should be senior in grade to the soldier being counseled and a NCO) have the
soldier state they refuse to sign the counseling. Then ask the witness write a statement
in the Session closing portion of the form. An example statement might read: soldier
refused to sign the counseling (witness) prints their name and initials their handwritten
statement. This prevents the soldier from stating the counseling did not take place. You
should also include a comment in the leader responsibility section clarifying whathappened and what action(s) you took.
*A soldier who refuses to sign his counseling now makes it harder for him to argue his
case. It would be a lot smarter for him to sign it, and check the disagree box and state
why he disagrees.

HELPFUL COUNSELING TIPS
Here are some tips for conducting a Verbal Counseling session
*Keep it short and to the point!
*Make a note in your leader book about the time/date of your discussion
*You may wish to annotate the item on the soldiers monthly counseling
*You may wish to keep track of it for future reference. Lets say the soldier is late to work
with no excuse. You verbally counsel and make a note. 3 days later the same thing
happens. You then type up a written counseling and in it, you state that you verbally
counseled the soldier for the same reason on blank date and time.
*Helps show that you have done your job as a leader and tried to correct the problem at
the lowest level
*Shows the soldier you care about them and that you are serious about them fixing the
problem.

HELPFUL COUNSELING TIPS
VERBAL COUNSELING VS WRITTEN COUNSELING
Verbal:
*It is not the preferred method because if you the soldier
commits the same infraction it is harder to punish him for it,
because now there is no proof that the soldier has committed thisinfraction before. It is a quick fix to the problem.
*The soldier is not able to see on paper what they have done
wrong or right.
*The soldier also is not able to see where there strong points are
and were there weak points are.

HELPFUL COUNSELING TIPS
VERBAL COUNSELING VS WRITTEN COUNSELING
Written:
*It is the preffered method because if a soldier does commit an
infraction more than one time then it is documented, if it is
documented it is easier to punish a soldier with documentation.
*Written also allows soldiers to see on paper where there
weakness and strengths are and they are able to read it for
themselves. This allows them to also talk with their leader on
how to fix there weakness, and it allows the leader to also make aplan that the soldier is able to follow.
