The planned partnership has looked at how schools canincrease sustainability in their schools and communities, and how energy costs could be reduced. Our finalwebsite includes helpful teaching resources to worksustainability through a cross-curricular approach bydifferent subject teachers. Thus, each school analysedtheir curriculum to work out resources taking into accountthe diversity and different abilities among the students tofit the project interdisciplinary and sustainably. This included environmental, economic, social andcultural dimensions of sustainability. Themes like NaturalDisasters, Ecological Footprints, Green Buildings,Renewable Energy, Waste & Recycling, Healthy Eatingand growing, Environmental Problems and Loss ofBiodiversity, and Consumerism and Lifestyles (FairTrade, Organic, Free Range, Made Locally, Bio, FoodMiles) were included to create and share WebQuests, quizzes, surveys, digital presentations, essays, and anenvironmental calendar which includes pictures selectedafter research, sharing and discussing finds, a logo(chosen by a competition), and photos of localenvironmental problems. European seeds were plantedat school allotments to work on food miles and beingorganic leading to recipes. A weather station was used ineach school to share data.Students exchanged opinions through e-mails, essays, blogs and projects set on e-twinning and digital platforms.World Cafes evaluated the process in the mobilities.During the second year students designed sustainablebrochures, videos with tips to save costs at school, homeand the wider community. Their future commitments wererecorded in videos and joint in a presentation. Studentsdesigned a dress, a table and a chair with recyclingproducts. The final products include a web page and ane-magazine. This is the second part: Year 2.

GOODNEWS!!
Coming back to schoolwith such good news inSeptember
September was going to be a very hard month. We had to getready to host more than 40 partners in the Basque Country. We had to check that all the visits we had chosen were fullyplanned and that all members were ready to go on working. However, the beginning of the school year was different. Whenteachers told their students that we would go to Brussels, theycouldn’t believe it. Those who had read it on Twitter or Facebookkept the secret and it was a real surprise for the oldest studentsin Agurain. The products they had produced for the Comeniusproject had won the Fist Consumer Classroom Competition

the event
During the visit to the European Commission on 25th
November, students had the chance to ask the
European Commissioner some questions. This is Neven
Mimica, Member of the EC in charge of Consumer
Policy.
The first question we posed was related to our
Comenius project:
1. We are working on a Comenius project and
researching about reducing energy costs at school and
at home. We have held a meeting with our partners
from France, N. Ireland, UK and Germany, and we
have seen that there are differences among us when
we talk about implementing Directive 2009/72/EC.
There is a big concerned in our country due to the high
cost of electricity. The consumers in the Spanish State
pay the most expensive energy in Europe. We have
undergone several reforms, but it seems
competitiveness never arrives. Is there a way not to
dismantle the renewable energy sector? We learn at
school that renewable energy should be promoted and
used, but then, the sector is at risk. How can we
understand this? How are we going to meet the target
20-20-20 if renewables cannot be implemented in our
country because of the reforms in the sector?

About the video
Students speak about sustainable consumption and the prize theywon. It was explained that the poster had been designed as aresult of our work for Comenius project. It is a pity the videodoesn’t include all the clips the ‘paparazzis’ recorded for threedays non-stop. Still, we got to highlight how to important it is towork connecting subjects and cross curricularly. This is the results of two subjects working together: MGZ (Sciencein Society) and English and two school years: 1 Batx and Year 4

Itinerary shared with ourpartners and plannedvisits
After meeting the host families on Sunday, on the following day weshowed our school and town to our parents. We had prepared thetour to be the guides during the visit with the help of the historyteacher. A reporter came with us and she published a doubled-pagereport on the regional paper. It was just the start of the coverage ofthe visit, as two more news were to appeared: one in the historicalterritory of Gipuzkoa and another one in the Basque newspaper soldall over the country. The group work in the morning
included some presentations from
different countries and getting
ready for the displays and stands.
Partners had researched on the
whys of the Green Capital, the do’s
and dont’s of the European award,
so we wanted to listen to their
opinions.
It was stated that the activities
started late and that not
educational resources had been
offered to schools outside the City
even if they were as close as 20km
away.
After lunch we
visited the Nestle
ice cream factory.
Many parents work there, so we
saw them at work. We wanted to
know how the factory optimises the
environmental performance of
products along the value chain. The
environmental performance of a
product starts with good ecodesign,
so it is important to know the
impact of its lfe-cycle.
The factory aims at improving the
efficience in the use of resources as
well as at closing water cycles and
reducing waste towards Zero Waste.
‘Mitxarro’ Nature Interpretation
Centre in Araia, Asparrena.
We learnt about
‘Mitxarro’, an edible
dormouse, after which the centre
has been named. It is a small
mammal rodent which is in danger
of extinction. We watched a video
sitting at the ancient kitchen and
heard stories of local
people talking about
the animal and the
local fauna. The
panels and photos
gave us an idea of the flora we can
find at the Natural Park of Aizkorri-
Aratz.
We also saw how the mini
hydroelectric plant works and learnt
that it produces enough energy
from water to supply the town.
There is also enough energy left
which can be sold.

Azti-Tecnalia
Pasaia is the second most important harbour in the Basque Countryand one of the most important ones in Spain. It is located in theOiartzun estuary (SouthEastern Bay of Biscay). The recovery of the water quality has been a strong aim. That’s whywe contacted Azti-Tecnalia and arranged a visit. Azti-Tecnalia workson stopping the negative impacts of future changes along the coastand in the marine environment. They contribute to the developmentof the economic and social environment using and promotingTechnological Innovation. Azti-Tecnalia transforms science intobusiness, and finds solutions for institutional managers and agents, the fishery sector, sea users, food sector and consumers, and thescientific community.Although technicians were really busy and they couldn’t affordopening the centre to every body every day, they were very kind withus. They found the Comenius project very interesting and we werewelcome to do some measuring with two of the technicians. We even saw a yellow submarine!!!
Last year, just a month previous to our visit, AZTI-Tecnalia explored for the first time the inside ofocean eddies located off the Basque-Cantabriancoast. READ MORE on their web page. The datagathered will provide more knowledge about thistype of oceanic structures and the effect on themarine ecosystem, including larvae of the species inthe area. The big group split into two to go on a trip boat andattend the civic reception. The press covered theevent and the article was published in the mainnewpaper of the territory of Gipuzkoa. The previous day we had covered how green energyis produced. Now we were going to see how it couldbe supplied in a cooperative way. We were going tomeet Goiener and exchange our European views onthe topic.

Towards Zero waste: the Door-to Doorcollection has led to reduce by 80% theamount of waste that goes to landfillsand prevented the construction of anincinerator.People who sign up tocompost at home receive a 40 percentdiscount on the municipal wastemanagement fee.
A port of call!
The members of the council welcomed us and we projected the video we had created
about their town. Afterwads, Goiener (non profit energy supplier cooperative) explained us
their project and we had a very interesting discussion about renewable energy generation
and purchase. Although their is a European law about renewables, it is not applied the
same
way in
each
coutry.
It is more difficult to buy green energy and to start up projects which generate renewable
energy in the Basque Country and Spain than in the countries within our partnership
because of the oligopoly companies and the tariff deficit it is said Spain owes. More
information about Goiener in English. Their web page..
We told them that we would ask the European Commissioner in charge of Consumer Policy
about the tariff deficit on our visit to the European Commission, and so we did:
QUESTION 2: On the other hand, when we check our bills, we see that we are paying for
a tariff deficit which seems to have no end. We are told that we owe 28.000 million euros
to five energy suppliers. However, these energy companies seemed to have earned
40.000 million euros in the last 10 years. Is there a way to audit these 5 big energy firms?
An audit would let us see if we are really paying such big amounts of money because of
the distribution and transportation costs, capacity payments, incentives for renewable
energy and domestic coal, the cost of non-mainland generation, repayment of previous
deficits, and other costs of the system.

About Elos
Elos seeks to promote the European andInternational dimension in education. The Elosconcept defines the learning outcomes forstudents, describing the various dimensions forstudents participating in a European andinternational context. These outcomes are statedin the Common Framework for EuropeCompetence (CFEC). The CFEC offers acomprehensive and unique set of developmentalcompetences that students gain by studying at anElos school and which prepares them to study, work, live and thrive in an internationalenvironment. The Elos school standard describesthe requirements for a school to call itself an ‘Elosschool’.
Twenty two teachers from Elos schools in tendifferent countries attended the training course atthe Global Language Immersion Centre inGloucester. It was a very productive weekdeveloping understanding of the Elos concept andresources, strengthening the Elos network ofschools across Europe and making lastingfriendships. Collaborative project
We used the products we created for the Comeniusproject to meet other students in Europe. We sharedthe work with another school in Germany and wemade up new friends with another Elos school. Therefore, we disseminated the work thepartnershop was doing another school and workedtogether for the Consumer Classroom Competitionfrom February to April. We got to be finalist, but thevoting system didn’t help us. We cannot usefacebook at school and that was how it had to bevoted.

ABOUT ÖHRINGENRecylcing an article to rewritethe information we had aboutÖhringen. We also usedprevious presentations we hadcreated a year before to tell theparents and school mateswhere we were going andwhat we were going to do.Students researched on theGerman Educational Systemto find differences and find outwhat they would like to bringback to their schools form thatsystem.During the mobility studentshad to write a diary and at theend of the experience they hadto create a collaborativepicture canvas to share theirmemories.
Oehringen is the biggest cityin the Hohenlohekreis district,in the north eastern part ofBaden-Württemberg. Thecity’s history goes back to theRoman times and thesettlement of “VicusAurelianus.Located in the land of Ho-henlohe, the valleys are sur-
rounded by vineyards, hills, forests, lakes and the riversKocher and Jagst. There are nearly 23,000inhabitants and 6,000students.
The area is known as the"Land of Castles and Palaces"because of the number of
historic buildings found in theland. The houses, themedieval buildings and thehistorical sites have beenpreserved in good conditions.
Many students don’t live inÖhringen. They get up veryearly, around 06:00, to travelto school.

Monday, a new week ahead.
What do you usually eat at schoolas a snack? Do you wrap up yourfood with aluminium foil?Cultural differences: timetablesand meals. Snack, lunch andbrunch are not the same in ourcountry because our timetable isdifferent.
Questions in the morning: ‘Whattime did you get up?’ Was it 5:45,6:00, 6:30 or 6:45? ‘How long did ittake you to get to school?’
The Principal and the schoolengineer were ready to meet us totour around the school.
Do you wrap up your snack?

DAY 1AROUND THESCHOOL
The school is 4 years old, there are 90
teachers and 1048 pupils study there.
There are also three different areas: the
first area is for people who want to be
primary teachers; in the second area, they
work on agriculture; and in the third area,
they study common subjects. Besides,
students have metal, wood and agriculture
workshops.Students grow their vegetables in the
garden to use them for cooking lessons
After lunch we met for the icebreaker”
session. We got to meet each other and
practised English. Then each group met
together to get ready for their work and
project presentations.

It was a good idea to play some games to
meet each other. Sometimes, we are too
shy and we need some ice-breakers.
We had to adjust ourselves to understand
the Irish and English. It was hard at first, of
course, but they were very friendly and we
got to understand each other easily.
Those who had not registered for the
Agenda 21 Conference finalised their
registration, and presented our recycled
products: a table and a chair.
It was also very interesting to learn about
the German system. It is really different!!!

We met the mayor and he explained us
how the village had developed and their
future plans. He informed us about the
flower festival which is going to be
celebrated in 2016. We learnt that the old
castles had been built a long time ago.
It was inspiring for the new Erasmus+
project: urban landscaping. We had to
take notes for our diaries. Back to school
we had to tell our school mates all about
Öhringen!!
In the afternoon we had a sports session
and Basque dances with the German
Spanish teacher.

In the forest, we saw the damages caused
by air pollution and acid rain.
The walk was really entertaining as we had
to answer to the questions our guide
asked us. Mr Arnold even asked us to
measure a tree!!!
We saw the line that divides the forest and
the fields in the area. There are a lot of
birds and different types of animals, like
owls and foxes that live in this forest.
Trees are more or less 23m tall and 76cm
wide.

During the mobility to the Basque Country, we saw how anenergy cooperative can supply energy to a community. Wealso that Asparrena, one of our local towns, has planned to beenergetically self-sufficient.
After these two steps, we visited a village very close toÖhringen, which is energetically autonomous. The village hasa community biogas plant that heats the houses there. In casethe plant cannot supply energy for any reasons, they haveplan B, which is a pallets community heating. Last year, theydidn’t use it at all. The energy the biogas plant produced wasenough to heat Untermassholderbasch. There is a bigconcerned in the region, so the Hohenlohe-Odenwald-Tauberworks hard to achieve renewable energy and to fight climatechange as well as to reduce costs.
