How did things evolve in relation to initial expectations and fantasies?
M: Less structured than the initial planning and much better in
relation to our expectations regarding what people already knew
E: Is there something you experienced as a change due to your
participation in the programme?
Is their something you would like to take with you or /and something
you would like to leave behind?
Is there any type of new knowledge or expertise you would say you
acquired?
M: Not a particular thing or idea but overall what has been
particularly thought provoking and inspiring was the fact that people
were bringing with them all sorts of different ideas reflecting their
diverse experiences across very different work contexts. Overall a very
good experience of coming across a multiplicity of ideas and also very
inspiring conversations with the Greek trainers and the scientist in
charge of the project
E: Can your participation in the programme contribute to your
professional development in any way? Is there any type of knowledge
you would say its transferable back to your workplace?
M: I myself would like to add one thing. After returning to Finland I
noticed myself thinking more about my work than before. The
conversations with the participants made me notice what is important
for me in my own work and what I want to change in it. It has also led

me to try to make some changes in practice. So the visit was quite
valuable for me also personally.
E: Is there something you would have done differently had you been
organising the programme? Is there something you would have done the
same way?
M: The only things would be on an organisational level: a translator
who could translate directly from Finnish so that they would be able
to better express themselves in their own language (language is
important, a different language is a different set of meanings and
ideas)
R: and also an organisation which would be less hours per day,
because the whole experience of working with the families is very
intensive with a lot of feelings and can end up being very exhausting
E: If you were to plan a next phase what would you include?
M: The application of the introduced approach into practice, people
could be given the chance to work in networks in their different
workplaces in a supervised context so that they could experiment with
the application of the approach in practice

E: I am therapist and systemic trainer and also my field of studies is
qualitative research and there I have tried to develop a research
method which draws from systemic epistemology so my idea was to do
the evaluation, I did not want to do a quantitative evaluation, I did not
want to measure because this is not how I understand the world so I
thought that if I tried to develop a methodology where like in the
content of the program the voice of the participants could be heard
across levels of contexts and then sort of do you know an analysis not
a discourse analysis Ill see, maybe Ill do it after because I felt it
would be interesting to develop open dialogue as a methodology in
evaluation of programs. So what I have done so far is I talked with the
participants before the beginning of the program I had group sessions
with them where I discussed with them the concept of the evaluation.
So I discussed with them the evaluation itself I got their ideas you
know how this could be useful, what they should they do to be useful
and then I sort of developed a sort of areas of conversation around
which would be important to have everybodys view then I had one
interview with Markku and Riitta, the tape recording did not work but
I took some notes right afterwards and then I emailed them and they
gave feedback, I also talked with Michalis who is the director of the
centre and with Christos Nakos I had an individual interview and
today when I came there I had again an interview with all the group, I

asked them to reflect first on what the experience for each of them
was to participate in the program and then whatever they wanted to
comment on the program or feedback but my focus was basically on
their reflection, on their participation. So this is more or less the story
of how I got to invite you as well and I would be very interested to
listen you know the story from the beginning how you got involved in
the program and if you had any expectations or fantasies before you
came here and also I am very interested in reflexive sort of things like
any things you are taking back with you, back in Finland, this sort of
stuff so we can start from whichever point seems interesting to you I
dont know, this is the idea.
M: ok many questions
E: how did you get involved in the program maybe? Whats the story?
W: I got emailed by Froso Moureli had contacted Jakko I dont know
why she was not able to have contact with me and Christos Nakos
sent email and then Froso Moureli, something I did not know why she
contacted me in June 2008 and that it was some emailsit was
quite long time between the first and the second e-mail two months I
did not know what has happened I did not remember
E: And what was the invitation about? To do what?
W: The question was is it possible to arrange some kind of training so
that group is coming to Finland to hospital I remember so it would be
possible to see the approach to come to visit our hospital, but in
spring this changed I remember so and also I promised people in our
hospital they can make program it is possible and I promised them
not coming here
E: not coming here but you were expecting people from here to come
there?
W: yes and I promised some of us can also come here I dont
rememberfirst in Finland and afterwards here
E: but it did not work out like this?
W: no because they sent email that this is not possible to havethey
dont have money enough to come to Finland and then I was asked is

it possible that somebody comes to Greece to have training here and I
told Markku and we were thinking that it is not possible that only one
of us is coming for a week and maybe it was Markku who sent the
first email to Froso that we are not coming alone we used to be
together in the training and then all the time I supposed that someone
else is coming, not me.
E: you are very busy there!
W: yes and they wanted to have a second it was in May, in April they
sent email that they wanted to have another one here it was in the
end of May
M: my story is very brief

M: Markku said well do you have time to train in Greece open dialogue
and I said of course
E: how come?
M: I trust Markku and I trust Birgitta and I think its a good idea so..
E: so you agreed
M: I agreed, it didnt sound bad
E: what were you expecting I mean to find here?
M: actually now that I am heresurprise is not the right word about
how little I knew about the whole program and about the systemic
training and we didnt know how many people who are these people
where do these people come from so we had very little information
