Experimental Animal-assisted Therapy for elderly dementia people based on an analysis of utterances toward animals

ãAbstract : This study investigates communication characteristics during Animal-assisted Activity (AAA) for institutionalized elderly patients with dementia, using utterance communication as the main focus of this study. Study participants comprised four elderly patients with dementia. The AAA was conducted for a total of six times, every two weeks. A detailed analysis of the utterances of one elderly person and one volunteer was conducted during the AAA. The volunteer made a number of utterances to each participant. The utterances of the elderly participant increased, and the volunteerâs utterances decreased. The volunteer estimated the mental status of the dog and presented several utterances about it to the elderly participant. The elderly participant was able to communicate with the help of the dog. Moreover, the elderly participant was able to emotionally comprehend another participant. This study concluded that elderly patients with dementia developed understanding each other and acknowledge their personalities.
