Welcome!Family and Friends Foundation is an engaging aural-oral introduction to English which uses a range of activities, games, and songs that motivate and help young learners to succeed in English.
It consists of 10 units. Each unit has four core lessons comprised of a Class Book and Workbook component, with a one-page-per-lesson format. Each lesson has a specific role in the unit.
Tour of a unit
Teaching the vocabulary Play the recording and hold up the flashcards. The children
repeat the words and point to the correct picture in their Class Books.
Show the flashcards randomly and ask the class to say the words. You can hide the cards behind your back.
ValuesFamily and Friends Foundation recognizes that language instruction presents an opportunity to reinforce values such as cooperation, teamwork, health, good nutrition, and respect for others. The dialogues, stories, and illustrations provide opportunities to address such values.
WorkbookChildren complete exercises such as circling and colouring that relate to the target vocabulary.

Lesson One VocabularyLesson 1 focusses on vocabulary. There are typically seven new words for children to produce.

Lesson Two StructureLesson 2 teaches the grammar points. The children also practise the language with a song and Total Physical Response activities.
Teaching the dialogue and structure
Dialogue Establish the context for the story or dialogue by asking
children questions about the pictures. Conduct this part of the lesson in the childrens own
language. Ask questions which give key information. These questions typically begin with: Who? Where? What? and Why?
Children listen to the story or dialogue as they look at the pictures in their books.
Structure Teach the structure through example rather than explanation.
Reinforce meaning with actions. Play the recording and have the children repeat the words
in chorus. Use the song picture to consolidate meaning if necessary.
Use flashcards to substitute new words. The children will see how the grammar structure works with different words. The children repeat the new sentences.
WorkbookThe children complete more exercises, like matching, that relate to the unit vocabulary or structure.

Structure
The children practise saying the words and doing the actions for themselves.
The children listen and repeat the structure using the class audio CD.
Characters
Four lively characters introduce children to the world of English. They also model good behaviour.
Baz is a four-year-old boy in his first year of kindergarten. He is good-natured and kind. He does not always do the right thing, but he tries his best. Many of the children will identify with Baz as he tries to learn new things.
Tess is Bazs sporty and fun older sister (see previous page). She is seven years old. She is eager to guide Baz and is forgiving of his mistakes.
Pat and Jig are the childrens stuffed animals. They represent the pretend world of the child and help to develop childrens creativity.

Lesson Three SongLesson 3 presents a song, which either revises the topic vocabulary, or in some cases provides extension vocabulary such as additional colours. This is followed by a critical thinking activity.

Song
Teaching songs and critical thinking exercises
SongsFamily and Friends Foundation features at least one song in all units. There are step-by-step notes tailored to each song. The general procedures are as follows: Present any new language using real objects, flashcards,
magazine pictures, drawing on the board, miming, etc. Children listen to the song. You may find that it is easier
to present the actions as children listen. This often helps children to remember the language more easily.
Children sing along as they listen again. Call children to the front to do the actions and lead the song.
Use props, e.g. flashcards, to make it more fun.
Critical thinkingIf possible, use the childrens own language to ask open questions. Encourage the children to ask questions themselves and respond enthusiastically. Its very important to create a learning environment in which children are comfortable asking questions.
WorkbookChildren use and study numbers to practise the target language in a different context.
The Family and Friends Foundation critical thinking activities practise categorizing, grouping, recognizing parts of the whole, sequencing, and patterning.
The children learn and do actions to accompany the song.

Lesson Four StoryLesson 4 is the story lesson. Each story is a simple four-frame story which features the course characters or other characters in humorous, creative, or thoughtful situations.

By developing performance skills, they practise and become fluent in expressing real-life situations, starting with the story in the classroom and then moving on to real-world contexts.
WorkbookActivities like sequencing give children the chance to think critically using the unit vocabulary.
