For its harmonia mundi début, the London-based ensemble La Nuova Musica, led by David Bates, presents a true rarity: the original 1712 version of Handel’s opera Il pastor fi do (The Faithful Shepherd) in its world première recording, featuring Lucy Crowe, Anna Dennis, Katherine Manley, Madeleine Shaw, and Clint van der Linde. La Nuova Musica is a vocal and instrumental ensemble dedicated to the music of the European Renaissance and Baroque. In less than fi ve years since its foundation by countertenor David Bates, it has shot to prominence in the UK and abroad.

IMPORTChicago-born violinist Tai Murray, a BBC New Generation Artist in 2009, makes her harmonia mundi début in a dazzling reading of the six solo Sonatas by Eugène Ysaÿe. Each sonata was dedicated to one of Ysaÿe’s contemporary violinists — Joseph Szigeti (No.1), Jacques Thibaud (No.2), George Enescu (No.3), Fritz Kreisler (No.4), Mathieu Crickboom (No.5) and Manuel Quiroga (No.6). Inspired by hearing Szigeti perform J.S. Bach’s Sonata for solo violin in G minor, Ysaÿe wrote sonatas that represent the evolution of musical techniques and expressions of his time. He used prominent characteristics of early 20th century music such as whole tone scales and quartertones. He also employed virtuoso bow and left hand techniques that place high technical demands on the performer. In spite of these challenges, Murray’s superb technique and burnished tone allow Ysaÿe’s fascinating music to sing as never before.

IMPORTGoethe’s Willkommen und Abschied (Greeting and parting) provides a thematic connection for the Schubert lieder on this recording, as performed by tenor Werner Güra and pianist Christoph Berner. The poem is emblematic of the Romantic ideal and the feelings it evokes permeate Schubert’s compositional output. The subject, a traveler in search of meaning and a feeling of oneness with nature, asks himself all his life what place he occupies in the world. To this existential question, the wanderer can see only one answer: “I am a stranger everywhere.”

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDOn Tune thy Musicke to thy Hart, the choral ensemble Stile Antico, joined by the acclaimed viol consort Fretwork, explores a long-neglected repertory: the wealth of Tudor and Jacobean sacred music written for domestic devotion, rather than for church worship. Culled from collections intended for use in private homes, these pieces by Tomkins, Campion, Byrd, Tallis, Dowland, Gibbons and others, offer a unique insight into the turbulent religious climate of the time and the thriving musical culture at its heart. The album features a capella and accompanied vocal works framed by instrumental solos played by Fretwork.

IMPORTOboist Céline Moinet begins her collaboration with harmonia mundi with a veritable tour de force, combining, in a single collection, two repertories separated by more than two centuries. On it, 18th century works by Johann Sebastian and Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach are paired with the 20th century of Benjamin Britten, Luciano Berio and Elliott Carter in a project that combines exceptional musical coherence with a decidedly gentle sonority, reminding us of the ‘tenderness’ with which Berlioz identifi ed the oboe.

IMPORTViolinist Isabelle Faust is featured on a disc of German violin concertos that marks the début recording for harmonia mundi by the great Italian conductor Claudio Abbado. Abbado is the artistic director and principal conductor of Orchestra Mozart, an ensemble based in Bologna. They team up here for Berg’s haunting Violin Concerto, subtitled “To the Memory of an Angel.” The work is dedicated to the memory of 18-year-old Manon Gropius, daughter of Alma Mahler, who died of polio in 1935. The pairing is Beethoven’s immortal Violin Concerto, a work of rare beauty that, surprisingly, was not a success at its fi rst performance. It was an 1844 concert featuring Joseph Joachim and Felix Mendelssohn, well after Beethoven’s death, which revived the work and made it a permanent and beloved part of the violin repertoire.

IMPORTRussian classical music seems to have a dual consciousness: sometimes grave and introspective, sometimes luminous and resolutely forward-looking. At root, this sentiment draws on the many traditions of the biggest country in the world and on its special relationship with western Europe (especially France) from the 18th century onwards. The three compositional “Treasures of Russia” featured on this specially-priced set explore the principal infl uences on music of their time — Orthodox religion, a quest for modernity and the intense emotion and suffering of the Russian soul. Rachmaninov’s Vespersare performed by Paul Hillier, while Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition is performed in the original piano version by Exhibition is performed in the original piano version by Exhibition Brigitte Engerer. The tortured soul of Russia is encapsulated in Tchaikovsky’s Pathétique, performed by Pathétique, performed by Pathétique Daniele Gatti.

IMPORTOne of Shostakovich’s unique traits is the way he spurs the listener’s imagination by appropriating different languages and using them in unexpected fashion. The result is music with two faces, sometimes sublimated by ecstasy and joie de vivre, sometimes plunged into emptiness and suffused with a death wish. Accompanied by the Mahler Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Teodor Currentzis, Alexander Melnikov captures this feeling admirably in the two Piano Concertos, and perhaps still more poignantly, — “with disarming sincerity and fearless directness,” to quote his booklet note — alongside Isabelle Faust in the Violin Sonata Op.134.
“His playing, on its own terms, is so virtuosic and secure that you surrender to it immediately.”

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDThe concept for The Rite of Spring originated with the Russian philosopher and painter Nicholas Roerich. Roerich shared his idea with Stravinsky in 1910 — a fleeting vision of a pagan ritual in which a young girl dances herself to death. The duo joined forces with Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes and Stravinsky’s composition began to take shape. Vaslav Nijinsky, the company’s leading male dancer, conceived of a completely original dance style that was a radical departure from ballet of the time. The Rite of Spring’s 1913 première created one of the most famous classical music riots in history. Its intensely rhythmic score, primitive scenery and radical choreography completely shocked the audience, who were accustomed to the elegant conventions of classical ballet. Almost 100 years later, The Rite of Spring still has the ability to shock — it still sounds fresh, pagan and new. On this Super Audio recording, Iván Fischer and the Budapest Festival Orchestra offer a powerful and intense performance that reveals the underlying simplicity that forms the foundation of the work.

IMPORTGarrick Ohlsson offers a brilliant reading of Granados’s p i a n i s t i c m a s t e r p i e c e , Goyescas . Written in the fi rst decade of the twentieth century, it is a musical tribute to the great Spanish artist Francisco de Goya, under
whose spell Granados had fallen as a young man. Filled with a patriotic fervor for what he saw as a universally great Spanish genius, he wrote several pieces inspired by the painter’s life and times. The six pieces that make up Goyescas are not mere tone-poems but instead draw on details from Goya’s works — notably the Caprichos, a sequence of aquatints that satirized (and outraged) Spanish society. Another product of Granados’s preoccupation with the painter was the exuberant El pelele, which recounts the tale of a straw man being tossed on a trampoline, while the Allegro de concierto forms a fi ttingly brilliant endpiece.
“Technically, Ohlsson is right up there with Richter, yet he manages to produce an even more beautiful sound.”

IMPORTLong recognized as an outstanding c h a m b e r m u s i c i a n , A n t h o n y Marwood has more recently been making waves as a concerto soloist, with two contributions to the Romantic Violin Concerto series and now a disc of Britten with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Ilan Volkov. The youthful Violin Concerto, with its mix of anguished lyricism and changeability of mood, nods to both Berg and Prokofi ev — but the result is entirely personal. Marwood is joined by star violist Lawrence Power for the still earlier Double Concerto, which is impressive above all for its precocious confi dence. Written when Britten was just eighteen and still a student at the Royal College of Music, it had to wait sixty-fi ve years before receiving its premiere in 1997. On the other end of the spectrum, the Lachrymae, inspired by a Dowland song, was written in 1950 but not orchestrated until 1976 — the year of the composer’s death.

abandonnata, written when Cherubini was just twenty-two, to the dark drama of the overture to Démophon (which unaccountably failed to wow Parisian audiences). And there are vocal delights too, showcasing a virtuosity that looks forward to Rossini and sung here with effortless agility by soprano Maria Grazia Schiavo.
IMPORTOn this disc, star violist Lawrence Power is joined by his regular pianist partner Simon Crawford-Phillips in a survey of the chamber music of Shostakovich. The centerpiece is the Viola Sonata, Shostakovich’s last completed work, premiered posthumously, on what would have been the composer’s sixty-ninth birthday. Its ravishing slow fi nale reworks the opening of Beethoven’s ‘Moonlight’ Sonata — a tribute to a composer he revered. Shostakovich the fi lm composer also takes a bow in the form of The Gadfl y, with its famous “Romance” beloved of violinists everywhere. That this works just as compellingly on the viola is triumphantly displayed in the arrangement made by Vadim Borisovsky (founding violist of the Beethoven Quartet), one of the Five Pieces he recast from Shostakovich’s original. Shostakovich’s piano Preludes have also proved irresistible to transcribers and here we have the seven brilliantly reworked by a pupil of Borisovsky, Yevgeny Strakhov.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDThe second release in Sir Colin Davis’ acclaimed Nielsen cycle with the London Symphony Orchestra features the fi rst and sixth symphonies. The debut recording of symphonies four and fi ve was an Editor’s Choice in Gramophone and Orchestral Choice of the Month in BBC Music Magazine. Nielsen’s First Symphony draws inspiration from Brahms and Dvorak but also contains hints of the progressive tonality for which he was later celebrated. His enigmatic sixth and final symphony, entitled Sinfonia Semplice (Simple Symphony), turns out to be anything but this. Though written thirty years apart, both works feature folk-infl ections, tonal ambiguity and Nielsen’s distinctive anti-Romantic style.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDFor his second Mariinsky release, the acclaimed Russian pianist Denis Matsuev joins Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra for a program of music
by Shostakovich and Shchedrin. Despite being a prolifi c symphonist, Shostakovich only wrote two piano concertos. His fi rst, displaying his usual wit and sardonic humor, features a prominent solo trumpet part, which provides dialogue with the piano and an independent voice “commenting” on the music of the piano and orchestra. The Second Concerto, by contrast, is unusually happy and optimistic in nature. This may be because it was written for his son, who gave the première, and has been described as showing, “the composer as though his own youth had returned to him.” Rodion Shchedrin has so far composed six piano concertos, each signifying a new phase in his compositional development. His colorful Fifth Concerto is infl uenced by the music of both Shostakovich and Prokofi ev.
“Matsuev’s technique is stunning for velocity with power... an ‘edge of your seat’ experience.”— PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE REVIEW

dedication to this method is based on his belief that the machine has the power to bring about a moment of transfi guration in the victim, the moment they understand the crime they have committed. Scored for string quintet and two singers, this world premiere recording by the Music Theatre Wales under the direction of Michael Rafferty features tenor Michael Bennett as the Visitor and baritone Omar Ebrahim as the Offi cer.
IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDThis disc pairs trios by two Russian late Romantic composers, Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov and Anton Arensky, played by the Kinsky Trio Prague. It brings together a master with one of his former students and highlights the contrasts between a nationalistic approach to one of the cosmopolitan new generation. However, in spite of their differences, both works ultimately favor the splendor of Romanticism in which the keyboard is king. The dominant infl uences in these trios are the music of Brahms and Mendelssohn, albeit fl avored with a keenly Slavic sense of lyricism.
IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDMaurice Ravel’s rich and colorful works for violin and piano have become part of the core repertoire. IMPORTViolinist Mischa Elman rarely played for radio broadcasts, even in America, but he did so occasionally for the BBC. The two recitals on these compact discs were pre-recorded on a visit to England in 1961 and feature pianist Joseph Seiger. This Testament release marks their fi rst appearance on disc. For the Elman enthusiast, two pieces stand out. The Brahms G major Sonata is the only one of the three that the violinist did not record commercially. Also, the Gavotte en Rondeau from Bach’s E major Partita is important because we have virtually no unaccompanied Bach from Elman. Other repertoire includes a Handel Sonata, the Vitali Chaconne and Beethoven’s Spring Sonata.
IMPORTMichael Rabin’s musical voice may have been quiet the past forty years, but to violin afi cionados his star still shines brightly. His discography is small, refl ecting not only his premature death at the age of 35, but also the fact that for the last decade of Rabin’s ººlife, he did not have a recording contract. All of which adds to the importance of this recently discovered trove of recordings spanning his entire career, from the earliest extant recording when he was eleven years of age to one of his fi nal live performances in 1971, the year before he died. These recordings, bookends to a remarkable life and career, give the listener a unique opportunity to revisit not only the beauty of his playing, but also to follow his transition from boy wonder to mature artist. The journey, no less than the playing, is deeply moving.

IMPORTJohn Cage’s Etudes Australes, performed here by pianist Sabine Liebner, launched a series of virtuoso studies born out of the composer’s renewed interest in traditional instrumentation and notation. This complex work consists of a total of 32 etudes divided into four books, which John Cage based on maps of the southern night sky. From these maps, locations of planets were selected via chance and translated into pitches, transforming indeterminacy into a new aesthetic category. For Cage’s Etudes Australes, the moment of performance is its only moment of reality. Only what is in the present can be heard: in this case, a constantly changing kaleidoscope of sound.
Wergo’s reissues of the legendary Earle Brown Contemporary Sound Series have been a big hit with fans of contemporary music around the world. Each set is a treasure-trove of works by a wide range of composers, performed by some of the fi nest musicians of the time. The three CDs of volume four feature string quartets by Boulez, Scelsi and Earle Brown, works for chamber orchestra by Xenakis, Aldo Clementi, Bo Nilsson, Wlodzimierz Kotonski and Yuji Takahashi and works by Milko Kelemen, Niccolò Castiglioni, Vittorio Fellegara and Isang Yun that were originally premiered by the Hamburger Kammersolisten.

“All my inspiration comes from Ahmad Jamal.”— MILES DAVIS
The album features original compositions of pure majesty and brilliant new interpretations of classics and standards. Each of the album’s nine tracks showcases Jamal’s creative reinvention of swing, provides a pretext for some breathtaking melodies and sophisticated syncopations that are guaranteed to amaze. Accompanied by three impeccable guardians of tempo, on Blue Moon, Jamal is clearly at the peak of his artistry.
“No musician has had a more profound effect on the orchestral approach to small groups
in the last 35 years than Ahmad Jamal.”— THE VILLAGE VOICE
“The most exciting, creative keyboard artist living.”

IMPORTFile In: JazzYes, Steeve Laffont is a Manouche, and yes again, he plays in Django style as only a handful of guitarists can. However, his artistic ambitions are not limited to working in the wake of Django and his singular approach to jazz. Laffont has equal talent playing guitar in many other styles and he approaches all of them with the same fervor and the same spontaneity. In his playing you can hear the same supple feline grace as Grant Green, the same controlled fi eriness as Wes Montgomery, the same sophisticated elegance as Joe Pass, the same sense of melody as Charlie Byrd and the same rolling groove as George Benson. New Quintet’s twelve brilliant tracks amply display the many colors and strengths of Laffont’s artistry.

IMPORTFile In: JazzStrictly Romancin,’ Catherine Russell’s fourth album for World Village, is a paean to natural attractions: to a lover, an art form, to one’s family heritage. Our heroine explores love’s foibles, failures and bliss, from amorous to humorous. This acclaimed vocalist embodies the lost art of song savvy, inhabiting the lyric and allowing each melody to shine. On this fourteen song collection, Russell takes us on a journey — from Harlem dance hall to Parisian Café, from Store Front Church to Uptown Cabaret — blurring distinctions between the carnal and the eternal in a musical tour-de-force. For these sessions, Russell reunites with the team from her previous chart-topping album Inside This Heart of Mine, including recording engineer Katherine Miller, producer Paul Kahn and Musical Director/Guitarist/Banjoist/Arranger Matt Munisteri, who contributes his expansive vision to the project.

IMPORTFile In: World / Middle East / IranOn I Will Not Stand Alone, Kayhan Kalhor debuts a new instrument, the shah-kaman, designed especially for him. He is accompanied by Ali Bahrami Fard, on the rarely-heard bass santour. The album is a meditation on one of the most diffi cult stages in his life, where darkness and violence seemed to be taking over yet through music and his connection to the people, hope rises. Its message is a bittersweet refl ection on love, life and country.

E0r71uoc^@%!@*sPrice Code: A19
(Suggested Retail Price: $19.98)
IMPORTFile In: World / Europe / MoldovaZdob Si Zdub is in the truest sense of the word an “international” band. They are constantly on the move, crossing borders from country to country on never-ending tours. Along the way, the band has picked up and mastered many musical fl avors, incorporating them as they see fi t to express the appropriate mood for a song. From their humble beginnings as a Moldavian folk infl uenced ska-punk band, they have created a sound that mixes electronica, dance and alt-rock muscle without losing connection to their roots. The band has been propelled not once but twice to the fi nals of the Eurovision song contest, this year achieving this feat with the song “So Lucky.” Their appearance caused a storm of interest on the internet from every country participating. The record’s title connects where they come from (the former Soviet Union) to what it has become now (another superpower of the underworld) to where they are heading (their own independent route). So with a sense of irony and humor, Basta Mafi a! suggests an end to the old ways — not only in the political sense but also in a musical one.
