Henry Mancini was born in Cleveland,Ohio, on April 16,1924-His father,Quinto, and his mother,Anna, soonmovedto the steeltown of Aliquippa, Pennsylvania.It was there, at the age of eight, thatyoungHenry wasfirstintroducedto musicand the fluteby his father,whoplayedthe instrumenthimself.
At theageof twelve,Mancini tookup pianoandwithin a fewyearsbecameinterestedin arranging.A need for instructionand guidanceled to MaxAdkins,whowasconductorandarrangerfor thehouseorchestraattheStanleyTheatrein Pittsburgh.
Soon aftergraduationfrom Aliquippa High School in the fall of 1942,Mancini enrolledat the Juilliard School of Music. His studieswere inter-ruptedbyaservicedraftcall in 1943.He servedoverseasin theAir Forceandlater in the Infantry. Following his releasefrom servicein 1945,Mancinijoined the"GlennMiIler-Tex BenekeOrchestraasa pianist-arranger.It wastherehe methis wife, the formerGinny O'Connor, who was singingwiththeband.
They weremarriedin Hollywood in 1947andnow live in Holmby Hills,California, with their three children" a boy Chris (7/2/50) and' twindaughters,MonicaandFelice(5/4/52).
Privatestudiescontinuedwith composersErns~Krenek, Mario Castel'nuoveo-TedescoandDr. Alfred Sendry.
In 1952Mancini joined themusicdepartmentof Universal-InternationalStudios.During the next six yearshe contributedto over 100 films, mostnotahly "The Glenn Miller Story" (for which he receivedan AcademyAwardnomination),the"BennyGoodmanStory"andOrsonWelles'"Touchof Evil."
Soonafter leavingU-I, Mancini wasengagedby producer-directorBlakeEdwards to scorethe TV series,"Peter Gunn." His use of the jazz idiomcreatedan instantsuccessand resultedin a nominationfrom theAcademyof TelevisionArts and Sciencesfor an Emmyaward.
The album,"Music from Peter Gunn" wasreleasedby RCA Victor andto datehas sold morethan one million copies.The album was votedtwoGrammiesby themembersofthe NARAS (National Academyof RecordingArts andSciences)asAlbum of theYear(1958)andBestArrangementof theYear.
The successof "Peter Gunn" was soon repeatedby anotherEdwards'Mancini collaboration,"Mr. Lucky." The use of lush stringsand organ'provideda completecontrastfrom the driving "Gunn" music.The album',"Music fromMr. Lucky" joined"PeterGunn" asabestseller.NARAS again ~.honoredMancini with two Grammiesfor BestArrangementand BestPer-formanceby an Orchestra(His album "The Bluesand the Beat"wasalsoawardeda Grammythatyear-I 960).
