Taller 6
Título: IEARN- Contando historias digitales: Construyendo la cultura, fomentando la empatía
Tallerista: Christine McCaleb, YES alumnus(TBD)

Talleristas: Margaret Riel, Eliane Metni, Cathy Healy, Linda Giesen & Katherine Korte

participantes diseñan material multimedia utilizando diferentes recursos incluidos

Taller 20
Título: Ciencilandia
Talleristas: Sonia Hurtado & Joan Calvo
vida diaria y nuevas experiencias,

Tallerista: Carlos Javier Di Salvo

Summary Let's brainstorm! In this workshop we'll survey a wide variety of iEARN and other
collaborative classroom projects, new and old, tested and untested, including
some existing iEARN projects as well as adventures, experiments and ideas using
Skype, Facebook, Postcrossing, email, DNA tests, video, physical exchanges, and
other media and platforms for collaborating across international borders as well
as across subject areas. What works? How are technologies and youth cultures
changing? What are the trends and forecasts in social networking among older
children and teenagers? What new projects might work? Then, we will brainstorm
together to invent some fresh ideas for new international collaborative iEARN
projects for your future classrooms.

Title: iEARN- Rethinking creativity in our teaching
Presenters: Ana Hernández, Carina Balladares, María Paredes, Rosy Águila, Vanina Baksic, Mariana Jones ISFD Nº 808 & Kristin Brown
Objetives
Explore how educators can prioritize creativity in teaching and learning.
Learn new strategies and tools for developing their curriculum in ways that
enhance students' acquisition of 21st century skills.
Envision how to develop and deepen their curriculum through collaborative
project-based learning.
WORKSHOPS ENG
87
Summary This session will continue the discussion of creativity by envisioning a broader
perspective for engaging students’ imagination, intellect and identity. Presenters
will describe a creative methodology framework (descriptive, personal
interpretative, critical/multicultural and creative phases) with examples and
strategies to include audience participation. Participants will engage in dialogue
and activities that they will take back to their schools to share, adapt and/or apply
to collaborative projects in a variety of content areas. The session begins with a
vision for our network and critically examines the strand that relates to creativity
and creating community and content. Strategies will be shared for: a) helping
participants in collaborative projects get to know one another and build a sense of
community; b) examining content area knowledge and topics for collaborative
projects from a multicultural and critical perspective; and c) raising critical
questions for reflection leading to ideas for students to take creative social action
in their school, community or the world around them. We will tap on the
collective knowledge of the audience to rethink the possibilities of creativity
within our communities and beyond.

Title: Digital Storytelling: Building Culture, Nurturing Empathy
Presenter: Christine McCaleb, YES alumnus (TBD)
Objetives To discover the benefits of digital storytelling for building culture and
empathy.
To explore the uses of digital storytelling for various iEARN projects.
To enhance participants’ knowledge of digital storytelling techniques and
skills
Summary Humans have been using stories for over 25,000 years to define, share and
preserve their culture. In today’s multimedia environment, activism and
community service require a range of communication and media skills. Digital
storytelling has been praised for its inter-disciplinary learning opportunities and
diverse applications to promote 21st century skills and technology literacy, but it
is rarely referenced for its contributions to psycho-social development or
community building. Learning to tell the story of another can be a transformative
exercise that requires empathy, team work, understanding and finding value in
the "other". Combine this with the creativity of multimedia, interpersonal
communication blossoms.

This will be a hands-on workshop that explores time-tested storytelling
techniques using multimedia tools alongside a discussion about the
developmental impacts of digital storytelling. Participants will discover the myriad
of ways that digital storytelling can enhance iEARN Collaboration Centre projects,
can deepen the understanding between cultures, and can develop empathy in
students. Participants will produce a short digital storytelling project. This
workshop has been conducted in three countries with youth from the region,

Title: Understanding Innovation through Action Research
Presenters: Margaret Riel, Eliane Metni, Cathy Healy, Linda Giesen & Katherine Korte
Objetives To discuss the process of action research.
To provide a rich set of technical resources for doing action research and
examples of projects.
To help teachers set up their action research projects.
To connect action researchers to a network through learning circles.
The goal will be to encourage participants to think and work within the action
research framework.
Summary Action Research is a process of inquiry into one’s practice with two intertwined
goals. The first, personal, involves improving one’s practice through innovations in
a social context. The second is a commitment to help those involved gain a deeper
understanding of the change process. If iEARN educators were engaged in action
research as they organize projects for their students they would model lifelong
learning process as well as collect data about their experiences to share with
other iEARN educators.

The intentional study of teachers’ own learning process as they facilitate iEARN
projects will help them share their outcomes with the iEARN communities in their
country and across the network.
These action research narratives could be posted on the website and presented at
iEARN conferences.
This session will be to explore the action research approach and to help support
the participants in their action research efforts. The session will start with an
interactive discussion of action research and the sharing of the resources (free
online tutorial) available to support the process of conduction action research.
This will be followed by a discussion by Eliane Metni and Cathy Healy about their

To use Eduloc's web platform and apps in order to develop local projects (in
the neighborhood, town, city...)
To promote a learning project including mobile phones that each teacher can
carry out with his students back in their home country.
Summary Practical workshop involving tablets or smartphones with GPS technology in order
to work on projects based on localization. We will follow part of the itinerary
created by students from a school in Puerto Madryn and we will invite them to
the workshop to tell us what they did and what they learned. We will also share a
great variety of educational projects that have been developed using Eduloc's
geolocalization platform and Apps in relation to different areas of the curriculum.
We will also show how Eduloc's platform works and we will provide tutorials so
that students and teachers can geolocalize information in order to share it on
tablets or smartphones. Eduloc Project uses experimental learning based on the
constructivist pedagogy along with knowledge and interest for technology in
order to develop scientific, technological, engineering, and mathematical abilities.
It is especially intended for young people in risk of academic failure through a
program that gives them back an interest for learning and rewards them with the
local community's recognition, thanks to the impact of their work on the local
sphere. Students identify the most singular aspects or themes of the place where
they live and create itineraries based on localization that can be experienced by
users with mobile phones with GPS technology and develop abilities related to
empathy, cooperative work, social entrepreneurship, while they learn curricular

Title: Teaching with QR Codes
Presenters: Ricardo López Orozco & Manuel Cardozo
Objetives Raise awareness on the usefulness of QR Codes.
Mobile phones as teaching tools.
Give tips to design new QR codes.
Summary What are QR codes and what do they offer to the teaching environment? QR
codes are a new way of communicating that is rapidly expanding due to the
growth of the mobile phone industry. The biggest advantage of QR codes is their
storage capacity, which is much higher than their predecessor, the bar code.
That's why it isn't necessary for any organization to regulate the meaning of the
codes: the information can be directly read. The QR code has a square shape and
can easily be identified by the dark and white squares on three of its corners. It
can code all ASCII characters and can be read in any direction by a mobile phone
without requiring another specific device. Mobile phones must only have a photo
camera and an app that can read QR codes. QR codes are the link that allows us to
include mobile phones as a potent tool in teaching environments, inside and
outside the classroom. The only limit is the teacher's imagination.

Title: Global Learning through iEARN Global Learning Circles 2014
Presenter: Margaret Riel
Objetives
The major objective of this session is to present the current progress of the iEARN
Global Learning Circles project to the iEARN community of educators. Detailed
information will be provided on the Learning Circle methodology for promoting
telecollaborative project-based learning. The workshop is designed to introduce
Learning Circles to new participants and to show them ways they can provide
global education opportunities to their students. A further objective of the
workshop is to inform experienced participants on the future direction of
Learning Circles and to discuss the use of new technologies that are currently
being used to enhance the online collaborative learning experience.
Summary iEARN Global Learning Circles are highly interactive, project-based partnerships
among schools located throughout the world. A learning circle is a highly
interactive, participatory structure for organizing group work. The goal is to build,
share, and express knowledge though a process of open dialogue and deep
reflection around issues or problems with a focus on a shared outcome. Online
learning circles take advantage of social networking tools to manage collaborative
work over distances following a timeline from the open to close of the circle.

Given the fact that senior high students have limited time due to heavy study pressure, their learning choices regarding energy technology and ESCR are limited. Thus, it is desirable that methods should be developed for cultivating senior high school students’ awareness toward global greenhouse effects and energy shortage, and increasing their interest in energy technology research and development.
This workshop is based on an Energy-Saving and Carbon-Reduction research program proposed by the National Science Council in Taiwan, we examined and analyzed strategies regarding planning and building diverse learning scenarios for high school students from 2 senior high schools-the Affiliated Senior High School of National Kaohsiung Normal University and the National Feng-Hsin Senior High School were recruited.
Besides presenting the strategies and the process of the program, I will lead all the attendees to do a clean energy hands-on teaching aid. 2-4 attendees will be divided into a group, each group can not only finish an interesting teaching aid in 20 minutes but also understand the energy theory during the workshop.
Summary To cultivate young learner awareness of environmental issues and interest in theresearch, development, and application of energy technologies, numerousTaiwanese educational and academic institutes have developed formal and non-formal courses that focus on improving student Energy-Saving and Carbon-Reduction knowledge and attitudes.
This workshop is based on an Energy-Saving and Carbon-Reduction researchprogram proposed by the National Science Council in Taiwan, researchersexamined and analyzed strategies regarding planning and building diverse energy-saving and carbon-reduction learning environments for high school students. Theprogram was collaboratively planned by National Kaohsiung Normal Universityand the National Science and Technology Museum. Numerous diversified learningenvironments pertaining to independent research and service learning weredeveloped by combining the specialties of high school teachers and relevantresources and complementary teaching resources contained in formal and non-formal education.

Subsequently, this program was integrated in the curriculums of the AffiliateSenior High School of National Kaohsiung Normal University and National Feng-Hsin Senior High School.
Because the Taiwanese education system is exam-based and the time provided tohigh school students for non-formal courses is limited, researchers used ES&CRknowledge, attitudes, and interests of high school students as the primaryindicators for planning various learning environments.
The program was implemented over a 3-year period and comprised 5 diversifiedlearning environments regarding independent research and service learning.191 high school students were directly involved in ES&CR research andpromotional activities. In addition, to expand influence of this program andstudents’ learning effects, researchers incorporated international partnershipsinto the diversified learning environments.

Objetives We will show how to use iEARN’s popular Kite project so that students build ontheir joy in making and flying kites to build written and verbal academic skills withother kite-flyers by: Comparing, contrasting and discussing the hopes of students from other
cultures with their own. Considering further the hopes for “peace” by researching and deliberating
about genocides and wars in the recent past, their causes and the impact onchildren.
Summary
Every March equinox, on a day when all places are equal, iEARN students fly kiteswith messages of their own hopes for a better world. Participants in this projectinclude everyone, regardless of age and ability, including parents and others in thecommunity. We are inspired to do this because of Janusz Korczak, a Polishphysician, and famous children’s author, who was one of the first to advocate forchildren’s rights—even in the 19th century! Korczak and the children and staff inhis orphanage died in a Nazi death camp. Workshop participants will practicevarious kinds of additional interactions with the Kite project. These activities aredesigned both to deepen students’ understanding of others’ hopes as well as toenable teachers to fit Kites into their academic curriculum so they can do theproject during class time. Interactions will include Kites’ forum, Google hangout, the Venn diagram to compare and contrast messages, and displays. Also, since wecan count on wind in Puerto Madryn in the winter, we’ll fly our own messages ofhope during the break.

Title: The Audiovisual Revolution. Its productivity in the teachers learning processes.
Presenter: Carlos Carpintero
WORKSHOPS ENG
118
Objetives Enable the possibility of designing didactic strategies to link the use oftechnologies connected to the register, edition and publication of audiovisualmaterial with other means of communication, within the specific area of eachparticipant.
Identify resources and tools for the fulfillment of ideas about audio, texts andimages in motion, through a systematic, planned and organized practice.
Organize an experience which will focus on thinking the audiovisual product asa meaningful resource for the teaching –learning process.
Summary We will ask teachers to participate actively as producers and critics of theknowledge based on the audiovisual universe, setting a starting level in which thelexicon and logic of the problem are developed. Then we will focus on possibleresources related to the topic that concerns us. From everyday metaphors we willstart getting closer to the different aspects of the problem. The everydayexperience that youngsters have with digital images and multimedia can enlargethe gap between them and the teachers, conditioning the didactic system. Many students are Native Digitals or from an early age are used to producing, editing and publishing images with the most diverse digital devices (photographcameras, mobile phones, computers, etc.)Improving teachers’ competences in this area will benefit the interaction betweenteaching and learning.

Title: “Scienceland”
Presenters: Sonia Hurtado & Joan Calvo
Summary Scienceland is Project for students of 3 to 8 years of age.
The objective is to facilitate the contact children have with science so that they
can better understand the world around them. We intent to improve the
competence “learn to learn”, initiating kids in a scientific concept and training
them to be able to repeat the experiences autonomously and adapt them to their
daily life and new experiences.
The concepts to be worked are introduced through a short story that can be read
by the teacher or seen in a video.
Then, we work on the experimentation phase when the children can develop
hypothesis, come to conclusions and compare the concept with the results of the
experience. Activities can be done in the classroom or outside, depending on the
kind of exercise. Teachers have extra material to deepen the concepts.
Types o activities that are part of Scienceland:
Hand activities, observation and experimentation.
To work individually or in groups.

Workshop 26
Title: How to design virtual classrooms
Presenters: Yamila Ribba y Carlos Biscay
Objetives It is intended to provide didactic orientation which facilitates the commitment
with the new pedagogical practices.
Identify the role of the tutor-teacher in virtual environments.
Reflect about the methodological theoretical conceptions which would be
behind the decision-making to define a pedagogical proposal in any of the
platforms available. Apply Moodle tools.
Summary It is intended to give teachers tools so as teachers could plan innovative
pedagogical practices by making use of the new technologies in this environment,
and the possibilities Moodle offers.
It is expected to cover a didactic focus through the following topics:
Virtual Education: an on line pedagogical proposal. A specific theoretical
framework is limited to TIC. From a constructivist point of view we think that the
design has to be flexible and adapted to the individual learning necessities. It will
be explained in a simple way how teaching on line poses emphasis on the learning
mediated by ICT and how it should be worked with the TPACK model.
WORKSHOPS ENG
132
The didactic programming: this topic will cover all levels of programming – design, structure, implementation, etc… so as to determine how to work with theplanning, objectives, methodologies, etc. from an ICT proposal.
Focus on the collaborative learning: How to empower the activities and resourcesfrom Moodle. Develop the concept of collaborative learning, important in alllevels and responsible of the complexity which we have when “make decisions”and use the tool. Mention some of the activities and resources in Moodle, showing the diversity of work it can be done, making focus the ones whichpromote cooperation and construction of social knowledge.
Evaluation and e-portofolio:
An evaluative virtual proposal will be presented. Moodle as a platform offersdifferent tools such as: questionnaires, grading, scales and then we will work withthe concept of e-portfolio.

Title: Digital information in the real world: Augmented Reality
Presenter: Carlos Javier Di Salvo
Objetives Learn about Augmented Reality, different types and levels.
Reflect on the inclusion of this technology in the classroom.
Explore different Augmented Reality applications suitable for teaching projects
Summary We are constantly moving between two parallel worlds, virtual and real; we need
different devices, platforms and strategies to take advantage of each of them. We
often observe different kinds of objects superficially without being able to know
more about them because we lack the necessary means. With the suitable tools
we can enhance the context with more digital information. Augmented Reality
adds digital data to the real world and gives more information, thus providing a
mixed reality. At present, Augmented Reality is being used for different sorts of
teaching projects, and it is gaining prominence in schools, where it provides a new
scenario for learning. The massive use of mobile devices by people in general and
students in particular, is promoting its use. This, together with a large number of
downloadable applications, provides a rich technological environment for
learning.

Title: Connected friends
Presenter: Shirli Aufgang
WORKSHOPS ENG
137
Objetives Offer administrators, primary school teachers (specially recommended for 4th,5th and 6th grade) and educators, concrete materials and tools to:
Encourage respectful habits and responsible behavior in the use of ICT. Promote best practices with technology and access to enjoyable pedagogical
content.
Summary ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) are becoming scenarioswhere diverse interests, interpersonal relations, public and private organizations, information, conflicts, identity building, etc., are developed.Children are gradually becoming more and more familiar with social networks;they practically ignore other sources of information; most of their social lifehappens there and build their identities through the interaction with peers inthese environments.Playing, learning, listening to new music, watching TV series and videos, all theseactivities are part of their daily life and exist since they were born. In such acontext, it becomes necessary to create responsible use criteria: What deserves tobe published? What can I share and with whom? What information is useful? When are other people´s rights being violated? What is the right use for theInternet at school? How can we take part in situations of disrespect, abuse ordiscrimination that may happen in social networks? How can we help children andadolescents to create preventive criteria in those environments where theyusually behave more naturally than we do?All these questions require the construction of a digital ethics based on thebehavior rules that we know and adapted to the characteristics of networks. Asdigital environments are places to be inhabited, we speak of digital citizenship asa concept that offers a setting for our discussion of user’s ´rights andresponsibilities.
This workshop provides an opportunity to reflect about the uses, risks, possibilities, certainties and questions that these new practices involve.
