About Beijing
As the capital city of China, Beijing is the countrys political, cultural and educational center, as well as a
transportation hub. It covers an area of 16,808 square kilometers with a population of about 13 million. Beijing is an
ancient city, established more than 3000 years ago. The long and brilliant history has left Beijing many attractions,
including the Forbidden City, the Great Wall, the Temple of Heaven, and the Summer Palace. Beijing is a modern
city, too. On the streets of Beijing, high-rise buildings, shopping malls, hotels, restaurants, comprehensive and busy
traffic networks keep telling you the stories of its modern achievements.
General Information
13
Forbidden City - the worlds largest collection of preserved ancient wooden structures
The magnificent Forbidden City is the world's largest and
best-preserved imperial palace complex. Surrounded by
a formidable moat and wall are 9,999 rooms - the number
that the ancient Chinese bel ieved represents divine
perfection. The Forbidden City is so called because it was
off-limits for 500 years. It was home to two dynasties of
emperors - the Ming and the Qing - and functioned as the
administrative center of the country.
General Information
Discover the wonders of Beijing
Great Wall - unfolding Chinese culture beyond the wall
The Great Wall is one of the seven wonders
of the world. This immense wall was designed
or ig inal ly to defend against marauding
nomads. The wall spans 5 provinces (6,700
kilometers), winding across deserts, grasslands
and mountains. Most visitors see the Great
Wall at Badaling, 70 kilometers northwest of
Beijing. The surrounding scenery is raw and
impressive, and visitors can climb the wall and
enjoy a memorable panoramic view.

14
National Stadium - the famous Birds Nest
This is the key competition venue of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and the 13th Paralympics Games. The stadium, designed by Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, looks like a nest from the outside, symbolizing a cradle holding the hopes of mankind for the future. It is the iconic structure of the Beijing Olympic Games and has become a recognized landmark worldwide.
Tiananmen Square - the worlds largest public square
Tiananmen Square is an immense courtyard with breathtaking views. The square is surrounded by a variety of historical edifices: the Chinese Revolution History Museum, Chairman Mao's Mausoleum, the Great Hall of the People, and the Monument of the People's Heroes. Tiananmen Square is the symbolic center of the Chinese universe. The rectangular arrangement, flanked by halls to the east and west, echoes the layout of the Forbidden City. You may watch the impressive flag-raising ceremony performed at sunrise and sunset each day.
Temple of Heaven - Chinas largest existing complex of ancient sacrificial buildings
The Temple of Heaven Park is located in the Chongwen District, Beijing. It is the perfect example of Ming architecture, the Temple of Heaven was built specifically for the worship of heaven and prayers for good harvests. The temple complex is a treasure trove of ancient Chinese architectural design and art.
First built in 1420, the 18th year of the reign of Emperor Yongle of the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644), it was enlarged and rebuilt during the reigns of the Ming emperor Jiajing and the Qing emperor Qianlong. In 1988, the Temple of Heaven was opened to the public as a park, showing ancient philosophy, history and religion. Its grand architectural style and profound cultural connotation give an insight into the practices of the ancient Eastern civilization.
