P^Col. Aaron A. Degrauw and wife, ofJamaiea, have gone to Plorida for thewinter.

_ ¦¦¦ *&• *a—

Fred P. Morris, president of the LongIsland Is ews Co., has gone to Manchester,England, to visit his mother and sisters.

Steamer Montauk made her last tripfor the season of '37, from this place toNew Tork, Thursday afternoon. Quite anumber x>f factory operatives took advant-age of the excursion. She returns to this

place, Saturday morning and ties up forthe winter.

Eighiy-one years ago, about Christmastime, the Sag-Harbor Female Society forPoreign Missions, was organized. Thestated meelings were to be held four timesa year, and each member agreed to giveone cent a' week toTarcls the objects of thesociety.

Monday and Priday mornings of thisweek the I.ong Island Eailroad ran excur-sions from this place to New Tork andBrooklyn lor the accomodation of the em-ployees of the Pahya "Watchca<38 Factory.About sixty went down Monday. Thetickets are good to return on either 1st or2nd of January nest.

Christopher C. Loomis, of Little Bock,Ark., a former resilient and Trustee ofthis village was in town this week to at-tend the sale of the disputed property , onDivision, E. Parker, Atlantic Ave., audElizabeth Streets, which has been so longin litigation, and to which he has always¦claimed title. The sale was again defer-ifti Mr. Loomis is vrontlerlvilly wellpreserved for one of his years, being welln.!onjj iu the eighties.

UABD OK HAST> Ciiysn YEKBEP.S.—DavidOolden, of Setauket, was convicted ofselling hard cider without a liquor ta^certificate and was fined §200, and sen-tenced to three months in the county jail.Judge Beeves modified' the sentence to tendays but let the fine stand. This is not ablow at the apple industry, but a finestroke at npple-headeil legislation.

HAJVD Truss r>; Or.x> TIMHS.—The Suf-folk County ErccajD, published in thisplace the last week in the year 1810 , ha^a homily on hard times and "how po;/rfamilies should work ii."

Its advice is that "if yon are a poorman and in these haril times sorelyweighed down, look that in the ponder-ous scale there be no weights of your ownfinishing," aud goes on to say that poormen '•must buckle close to their businessday in and day out, they must lie no lesssaving than industrious— tht-y must becontented with plain food , :IG.J plain at-tire, and v.-s:L bare necessaries and. essen-tial comioi is cf life."

TIIE SAO IIAHBOR EXPHCS^ JLILIS A BOY.—Monday evening, as the western boundevening train rolled in to Bay Shorestation, Charley Hoffac-r, the nine yearolil soa ol a carpenter of that village, playing about the tracks, boarded it , ranacross the platform and jumped off theother side. -Just then the Sag Harbor ex-press came thundering along and struckthe child. Before the engineer couldbring the train to a stand still the wheelsof four coaches passed over the boy, cut-ting off both his leg;* near the hips. Dr.Moore was called to at tend the boy, andtemporarily dressed the .vomuls. The

'_, .<•.«!!? child tiled agon after. .

i First of all : To each and every readerof THE COBP.ECTOR , everywhere or any-where, we wish a MERRY CHRISTMAS.

Not' the mere compliments of the seasonnot the cold conventionality of a setphrase ; but a hearty, whole souled wishfor a Happy Christmas iu all that theword implies, the holiday promises andthe anniversary insjures.

Christmas is essentially the children'sday, aud to them should be given the firstplace in the festivities of the occasion. The wise men of the East came bearinggifts to the Infant Savior, and this givingof gift s to the little ones is the most ap-propriate of the observances. It is lesslikely to be perverted than the costly ex-change of pi-esents among adults. A

i simple expression of affection aud good¦ will manifested in some little token has

more heart in it, more appreciation of thetrue sentiment of Christmas than tho el-aborate presentation of a gift the donor 'spurse cannot afford. There is a preten-sions ostentation thai is the counterpar tof meanness. A present that ia givenwith the expectation of something equall yvaluable in return , violates the true sen-timent of Christmas benefaction. Betternot give at all than give with the intentof getting.

Oh yes, we remember of the Christmasof by gone days ; not of the olden time, but of half a century ago. Things aredifferent now, aud there have been won-

i

derous changes in the observation of theday. The old puritanical prejudice againstfestal days, and the holy horror of any-thing that smacked of Pioinaiiism has sof-

. tened down. There is more of Christ and¦ less cf creed in the thoughts of mankind,

r and our Churches all respond to the cele-: oration of Christ's nativity. We havedecorations and Christmas trees that

i would have been thought a sacrilege fifty¦ years asro.

It ia within tho half "eon!:dry- that thePresbyterian and Methodist Churchestook any notice religiously of the Christ-

! mas festival , except to look upon it assavoring oi papistical invention.

Locally conshlereil, the progress of |ideas aud the growth of liberality even to !

• lavishmenfc is shown in the preparations! for the hol y season. There are more toys: in one show window now, than there werei *

; in all the stores years ago. The childrenj hungup their stockings but a few candies: and apples and nuts , aud a single toy of-ten filled the bill. Now the favorite onesare simply bewildered in the profusion oithe donations.
