Legendary US sluge/alterna metallers Prong may’ve been doing their thing for 28 years but, this November, they will be making their maiden Australian voyage.
The history of Prong has cast a long shadow - bands like Korn, Slipknot and Nine Inch Nails openly acknowledge their influence.
By the time they had signed to Epic Records in 1989, the New York City post-metal triumvi-rate had already accomplished a lot. The band, formed by guitarist and vocalist Tommy Victor, soundman at the legendary club CBGB’s along with the club’s doorman Mike Kirkland and ex-Swans drummer Ted Parsons had already released two independent records. Their best known and best selling work, Cleansing, cemented Prong’s position as a mainstream metal mainstay. The album’s single Snap Your Fingers Snap Your Neck has been in the top 100 riffs ever since.
WHAT'S ON Despite the fact that his groundbreaking
fretwork in seminal UK outfit The Smiths essentially lay the blueprint for Britpop and myriad subsequent genres, Johnny Marr often played second fiddle to Mor-risey’s flower tinged caterwauling. Then, as a guitar for hir in such outfits as Mod-est Mouse and John Frusciante - he once again showed he was content with stand-ing in the shadows somewhat. However, after the release of his brilliant solo debut The Messenger last year, he proved he had plenty to say and he’s certainly making up for lost time with Playland - a kinetic and punchy set and tempered with a blistering post-punk energy.
While tracks like the Echo and the Bun-nymen-esque Little King and the rocking Back in the Box - the album is let down a tad by Marr’s vocals - a problem which his guitar playing more than makes up for.
While this isn’t Quentin Tarantino’s magnum opus (Django Unchained) holds that title this glorious re-imagining of WW2 comes pretty darn close.
A band of U. S. soldiers facing death by firing squad for their misdeeds are given a chance to re-deem themselves by heading into the perilous no-man’s lands of Nazi-occupied France on a suicide mission for the Allies. Brad Pitt and Christoph Waltz are nothing short of fantastic here. A must watch.
While not Tom Cruise’s finest hour, there is still plenty to like about this sci-fi Groundhog Day.
An alien race has hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, unbeatable by any military unit in the world. Major William Cage (Cruise) has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoni-ously dropped into what amounts to a suicide mission. Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop-forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again...and again.

When it comes to bona fide Aussie guitar heroes, Kevin Borich would have to be pretty close to the top of the tree. With a career spanning more than 30 years, Borich has done it all. Beginning with the seminal Kiwi rockers the La De Das, writing the classic Gonna See My Baby Tonight, to his Kevin Borich Express and The Party Boys, Borich has played at some of the biggest rock “happenings” this country has ever seen.
Borich has played and recorded with artists such as Renee Geyer (Blues License), Dutch Tilders (The Blues Had a
Baby) - Richard Clapton (Prushan Blue), Joe Walsh and The Party Boys, of which Kevin was a founding member.
He has jammed with Carlos Santana on two of his tours, also with Bo Didley, Richie Blackmore (Deep Purple), Ron Wood (Rolling Stones), John Mayall, Taj Mahal, Living Colour. Overseas tours and tours with Jimmy Barnes, Renee’ Geyer and
Mark Hunter, have added spice to his career.
Catch Kevin Borich at Caves Beach Hotel on Friday, October 31.
One of the country’s most enduring singer songwriters, Russell Morris hit creative paydirt in 2012 with one of the year’s most surprising releases in Sharkmouth. The barnstorming blues album, full of tales about such colourful Aussie figures as Squizzy Taylor, Phar Lap and Les Darcy, has become Morris’ most successful album to date. Not a bad effort considering that it was released completely independently.
Now, with the second album in a proposed trilogy, Van Diemen’s Land, out and doing it’s thing, it seems the purple patch is set to continue for Morris who has produced another thumping blues record that is even bigger in scope, both musically and lyrically to Sharkmouth - covering such topics as the Eureka Stockade and Breaker Morant.
Morris, who is perhaps best known for his seminal psych classic The Real Thing has definitely achieved icon status,
with the ubiquitous track added to the National Film and Sound Archive.
Catch Russell Morris at The Depot on Beaumont on Thursday, October 23.
Well, we’ve already told you about two Aussie legends making their way to Newcastle in the coming weeks, so why not make it a trifecta.
Long-time Newcastle favourites The Radiators, are heading our way to blow the doors off Edgeworth Bowling Club this week. Little did anyone realize back in 1978 that The Radiators would still be
together, still hugely popular and still producing quality music with no signs of slowing down. Travelling thousands upon thousands of kilometres up, down and across the length and breadth of this vast country, The Radiators have carved a niche in the annals of Aussie Rock history.
Catch The Radiators at Edgeworth Bowling Club on Friday, October 24.

While the first incarna-tion of Radio Birdman existed for only four short years, the ripples that their bril-
liantly incendiary two LPs - Radios Appear and Living Eyes - created can still be felt some 38 years after their release.
While they have always existed on the fringes of the Aussie popular music scene, there’s no denying that Radio Birdman were one of the finest rock and roll bands this country has ever produced. A fact that is reflected in the release of a mammoth, limited CD box set containing both the Trafalgar and Sire Records versions of Radios Appear and Living Eyes, remas-tered form the original tapes, each coming with a standalone bonus disc with more rarities than you can poke a stick at. To cap it all off the set also contains a previously unreleased show recorded at Paddington Town Hall in 1977. Yeah, hup!
“It’s funny because none of us thought the tapes existed and we ended up finding them in a studio where we’d never worked before,” guitarist Deniz Tek told TE.
“So, we went over there and there were like 20 boxes of multi-track studio record-ings - pretty much everything we’d done from mid 76 to mid-77 as well as a killer live album. From there it was a matter of restoring the tapes and just trawling through it all to pick out the quality , then we took it to [producer] Wayne Connolly
STEPHEN BISSET
who mixed it all - it was quite a long process, but definitely worthwhile.”
To celebrate the release of the set, a revamped Birdman lineup, featuring original vocalist Rob Younger, guitarist Tek and keys player Pip Hoyle along with bass player Jim Dickson (The Baracudas, The New Christs, Louis Tillet, The Pasen-gers), Drummer Nik Rieth (Celibate Rifles, Tumbleweed) and guitarist Dave Kettley (New Christs, Shifter), are heading out on a whirlwind tour that will kick off in Newcastle next week.
Newcastle represents a special place in Tek’s heart - not least for the amount of love in this area for Birdman, but also the fact that the trained ER doctor and ex-navy flight surgeon worked for a time at the Mater Hospital as well as meeting his wife in Newcastle.
“Newcastle has always been good to us, for as long as I remember, I also used to live there and this will be the first time we’ve played Newcastle in seven years so it makes sense to kick off the tour there,” he said.
After releasing their blistering state-ment of intent, the 1986 EP Burn My Eye, the band sent a shockwave through the Sydney music scene. With most bookers not knowing what to do with this anomalous Motor City-inspired rock and roll band, many venues refused to put them on. So, in an act of defiance, the band took over the management of a pub in Taylor Square - renaming it the Oxford Funhouse. The Funhouse became Birdman’s base of operations as well as a place for like-minded bands to play until
Birdman departed for their first European tour - a tour which would also see their eventual demise.
While many have cited the Funhouse as a catalyst for the Sydney punk scene and Birdman the fathers of the genre by exten-sion, listening to the breadth of influence that exists across their output and the inher-ent musical ability displayed by all players, makes this claim a tad disingenuous.
“I think the “punk” tag was a lazy tag that was put on us at the time because people didn’t really know what to make of us,” Tek said.
“I mean, we had a keyboard player and our drummer [Ron Keeley] was into jazz and definitely more roll than rock. We we’re obviously really influenced by guys like the Stooges and the MC5 but we also saw ourselves more in the vein of that 60s rock and roll like the Easybeats and the Purple Hearts - we didn’t really have any peers until The Saints.”
While there’s no doubt that Birdman inspired and still continues to inspire a level of adoration amoung fans that most bands could only dream of, Tek said he believed this was more to do with what the band represented than anything else.
“It was pretty crazy in those Funhouse days but I don’t think it was fanatical in terms of fandom for the band but rather a fanatcisim for a new way of thinking, dressing and being,” he explained.
“We were singing ‘there’s gonna be a new race’ and all of that frenzy and fervor, was for themselves and the possibilities of this new outlook, and we were just the poster boys for it.”
I think the “punk” tag was a lazy tag put on us at the time because people didn’t really know what to make of us

When their father passes away, four grown siblings, bruised and banged up by their respective adult lives, are forced to return to their childhood home and live under the same roof together for a week, along with their over-sharing mother and an assortment of spouses, exes and might-have-beens. Confronting their history and the frayed states of their relationships among the people who know and love them best, they ultimately reconnect in hysterical and emotionally affecting ways amid the chaos, humour, heartache and redemption that only families can provide-driving us insane even as they remind us of our truest, and often best, selves
Cast: Jason Bateman, Tina Fey, Jane Fonda, Rose Byrne, Adam Driver.
April, 1945. As the Allies make their final push in the European Theatre, a battle-hardened army sergeant named Wardaddy (Brad Pitt) commands a Sherman tank and her five-man crew on a deadly mission behind enemy lines.
Outnumbered and outgunned, Wardaddy and his men face over-whelming odds in their heroic attempts to strike at the heart of Nazi Germany.
Directed by David Ayer (Training Day, End of Watch) Fury stars Bradd Pitt, Shia LaBeouff, Logan Lerman, Jon Bernthal, Michael Pena, Jason Isaacs and Scott Eastwood.

THIS IS WHERE I LEAVE YOU
FURY Son of a Gun [Rated MA] Reviewed at Tower Cinemas, Newcastle by Stephen Bisset
Before I Go to Sleep [Rated MA] Reviewed at Event Cinemas, Glendale by Amelia Parrott
While I love a good plot twist as much as the next person, there is such a thing as overkill - something that plagues this otherwise strong directorial debut from Julius Avery. The performances from leads Ewan McGregor and Brenton Thwaites are powerful, the set pieces are engaging and there is enough tension here to keep you interested, but the constant twists and turns from act two may leave you a little giddy.
Thwaites stars as JR, a newly-arrived prisoner, locked up for a minor crime and in desperate need of protection. Enter hard-nut Brendan Lynch (McGregor) who offers JR his watchful eye - for a price. After he is released, JR is tasked with breaking Lynch out of prison with the view of executing a mammoth gold heist. However, things don’t really go according to plan and next thing it’s all cat and mouse, organised crime and political corruption.
While the film does tend to lose its way a bit after JR exits the big house, there is still plenty to like here - namely McGregor’s understated performance and one of the most audacious cin-ematic prison breaks in recent memory.
It’s hard to take a psychological thriller seriously when it shares its main plot device with an Adam Sandler movie.
Based on the debut novel by Briton S.J Watson, Before I Go to Sleep sees Nicole Kidman play 40-something amnesiac Chris-tine Lucas, who, as a result of a horrific car accident, has her memory is wiped clean each night while she sleeps- 50 First Dates, anyone? Christine’s small world begins to unravel when she secretly begins receiving treatment for her condition. She soon finds out there’s more to her memory loss than her hus-band, Ben (Colin Firth) lets on.
While this won’t be remembered as one Firth or Kidman’s best flicks, Before I Go to Sleep is engaging enough and there are plenty of unexpected twists along the way. It’s always great to see Firth branch out from his roles as the English gent. This is not the most original concept for a film but hey, it’s watchable.

RUBBER BULLET KENT HOTEL SATURDAY, OCTOBER 25
If you’re a music fan, chances are the boys from Rubber Bullet, have got your favourite sounds covered. With an unrivalled quantity of songs in the arsenal they have been gigging solidly in the Newcastle area for quite some time now. They say they have never played the same show twice, keeping every performance unique, fresh and driving with a spontaneous energy.
Like many popular powerhouse bands of the past Rubber Bullet pride themselves on only being a three-piece and keeping it all totally live.
They have recently welcomed their new member, drummer, Peter Shafter. Shafter grew up in Mel-bourne, where before leaving for Newcastle he played in a popular St Kilda pub band, where he got the chance to jam with Aussie legends such as Ross Wilson, Paul Kelly and Southern Son Jack Jones. Bass player and vocalist Mark Wood was born in Liverpool England and returned there in the early nine-ties where he spent some time in a Beatles concept band in the role of John Lennon, with who his voice has an uncanny resemblance to. Zane Penn on vocals and lead guitar has a wealth of experience also, having supported a string of top acts most notably being Mick Jagger on his 1990 solo tour.

When it comes to Chinese fare in the Newcastle and Lake Macquarie areas, there’s certainly no shortage of choice,
and God knows I’ve sampled my fair share. However, there are few that can match the “wow” factor of the menu on offer at Heng Loong at Wallsend.
Located in the former Wallsend Library site, Heng Loong boasts a formidable menu that could rival the library’s weightier tomes - but every dish here is an absolute winner.
The restaurant was fit to burst on Saturday night, but that didn’t stop the friendly wait-staff bringing out our dishes at a fantastic pace. My dining partner and I decided to share a mixed entrée to start and this cornucopia of traditional Chinese favourites - spring roll, dim sim and prawn toast was a great way to start the meal. The spring roll had just the right amount of filling to tanta-lise the tastebuds, the dim sim was spiced to perfection and the prawn toast was a crunchy yet soft and fluffy delight.
On to mains and we didn’t need much time to deliberate. I decided on the rain-bow beef and I have to say this is a dish was an absolute cracker from the first bite to the last. A healthy portion of strips of delicate beef were drizzled in a ridiculously morish slightly sweet and sour sauce balanced things out perfectly. The beef was served in a “bird’s nest” which not only tasted great but added another visual element to the plate.
Shung Tung chicken is my dining part-ner’s favourite dish so she was keen to sample the Heng Loong version. After just one bite, she remarked that this one could be the very best she’d tasted.
The skin was so crisp and crunchy and

the meat so tender and juicy that any other roast chicken experience you’ve ever had will seem pedestrian by comparison. While this was quite a simple looking dish, when the chicken was combined with the zesty and mildly spicy shung tung sauce, the depth of flavour was astounding.
While the deep fried ice cream was winking at us from the menu from the get-go, after such a satisfying meal we found we nary had room for anything. Although, I won’t need much convincing for a repeat visit.

and new date of Saturday, March 28.The Baby Animals frontwoman Sarah
McLeaod was not at all happy when hearing of the news and went to Face-book to vent her spleen.
“Guys, I’m sorry to say this and we do not know why this has happened but the Superjesus and the Baby Animals have been booted off A Day on The Green in favour of adding Billy Idol,” her post said.
“So not it’s Billy, Cheap Trick, The Angels and The Choirboys. They will refund your tickets if you are no longer interested in attending this sausage fest.” Oh dear.
Billy Idol, Cheap Trick, The Angels and The Choirboys will be on at Bimbadgen on Saturday, March 28 2015.
While the news that snarl-mouthed rocker Billy Idol (pictured) has joined the
upcoming Cheap Trick, Angels and Chior-boys gig at Bimbadgen next year, has sent waves of “hell yeah’s” throughout the community, the news is not without a certain amount of controversy.
Aussie rockers The Superjesus and the Baby Animals have both been kicked off the lineup to make way for Idol.
The original lineup - Cheap Trick, Angels, Chiroboys, Baby Animals and Superjesus - slated for February next year, was ditched in favour of the new lineup

Cup fever hits fever pitch
There’s less than two weeks until the 154th running of the Melbourne Cup at
Flemington on Tuesday, Novem-ber 4.
Four-year-old mare, Lucia Valentina is on track to give the Hunter region strong representa-tion in the great race after finish-ing powerfully when running third in last weekend’s Caulfield Cup.
The Caulfield Cup is run over 2400m with the 3200m of the Melbourne Cup expected to suit the Kris Lees-trained galloper even more.
Lees said Lucia Valentina will now not race again prior to the Cup.
Those of you wondering about the chances of the overseas runners this year need not look past the performance of Japan’s
Admire Ratki who carried topweight of 58 kilograms to win the Caulfield Cup convincingly.
That effort has seen the visiting stayer moved elevated to favour-itism in betting markets for the Cup.
The Newcastle-owned, Protec-tionist is on the second line of betting with Lucia Valentina on the third line approching double-figure odds.
MELBOURNE CUP
Mr EntertainmentIf you’re looking for a solid gold good time for this year’s
Melbourne Cup, why no back a winner and get along to the Heaton Birmingham Gardens Bowling Club?
Aside from a sumptuous three course meal, a compli-mentary glass of house wine on arrival, sweeps, raffles and more fun than you can poke a riding crop at, the event will be compared by Newcastle’s own Mr Entertainment ,Wayne Rogers.
The irrepressible Rogers started dancing at the age of seven, studying ballroom, classical, tap, character, modern and jazz. After many years of conservatory voice tuition he became very interested in musical theatre. The combina-tion of his vocal and dance training has made him an asset to the entertainment business.
Since moving to Newcastle Wayne has had great experi-ence in Theatre Restaurant, Cabaret, Variety Concerts, Club Cabaret and Musical Theatre. For the past 15 years Wayne has been involved in Directing, Choreographing and producing large scale musicals. Oh, and he was also a finalist on the 2011 series of the hit TV show Australia’s Got Talent.

Still got the blues
With this year’s 25th anniversary Byron Bay Bluesfest featuring the likes of John Mayer, Elvis
Costello, Gregg Allman, Steve Earle, The Doobie Brothers, Boz Scaggs, Aarron Neville and Buddy Guy, you’d be forgiven for thinking that the festival couldn’t get any better.
Well, to think such things would be to underestimate the drive, passion and tenacity of Bluesfest impresario Peter Noble, who, with just two announce-ments in, has pulled off a bill for 2015 that would be the envy of many of the world’s major festivals.
If the first announcement, which includes blues-rock duo The Black Keys, funk meisters George Clinton and Parlia-ment Funkadelic, soft rockers Train, Aussie legend Paul Kelly, an US country/folk darlings the Zac Brown Band, wasn’t enough, then the second announcement, released last week, should have you salivating - Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals in their first performance in eight years, Gary Clark Jr, Ruthie Foster, veteran soul chanteuse Mavis Staples, UK singer songwriters David Gray, Ben Howard and Paolo Nutini and Brissy world-beaters Sheppard.
“Yeah, I’m really bloody proud of these two
STEPHEN BISSET
MUSIC
announcements, in fact, there have been a few times where I’ve had to pinch myself - I mean, just look at it,” Noble told TE.
For Noble, who throughout his 24 year involvement with the festival has brought the likes of Bob Dylan, James Brown, Taj Mahal, Bo Diddley and BB King to Byron, the fact that he was able to secure Harper ( a long time visitor to Bluesfest) with his legendary backing band The Innocent Criminals, has made him as proud as
punch, given that the history of the festi-val is inexorably linked to Harper.
“Bluesfest was always primarily blues, gospel and, I guess alternative country oriented, then here comes Ben Harper in 1996 around the time when Fight For Your Mind came out and then we started seeing the younger crowd come in and all of a sudden I found that I was booking a different kind of festival and it all points to one artist. His music just transcends genre
and you can definitely see his influence on Aussie artists that came after like Xavier Rudd, John Butler and The Beautiful Girls. So, obviously we’re very proud to be hosting him with the Innocent Criminals and I will say now that this will be his only performance, definitely.”
While other Aussie festivals have suffered various knocks over the past couple of years, Bluesfest remains at the forefront of not only this country’s festival circuit, but globally.
“You’ve only got to go on Palo Nutini or Ben Harper’s Facebook pages to see how much interest around the world the announcement generated,” Noble said proudly.
“I wouldn’t say we’ve survived unscathed - every year I have a few more scars, but I think the longevity is down to the fact that we’re always progressing and we never really limit ourselves - I mean we mix heritage artists with new artists and we’ve got blues, rock and roll, reggae, pop and even a bit of punk in there - people might come to see your Ben Harpers but then they’ll be walking past someone like Bo Diddley and say “what the hell is this” and that’s the beauty of Bluesfest.”
The Byron Bay Bluesfest will be on at the Tyagarah Tea Tree Farm, Byron Bay from Thursday, April 2 to Monday, April 5 2015. For tickets and more info, visit bluesfest.com.au

After whetting the nation’s inter-est with two blistering state-ments of intent in his 2009 EP
Homemade Bombs and 2010 long player The Blacklist, Victorian-bred rapper Briggs has hit back with possibly his most cohesive and potent collection yet, Sheplife.
It seems the Oz music buying public agrees too, with the album snagging his first ARIA top 20. Briggs is currently on the road in support of the album and its latest single Bad Apples and he said everything that has happened post-release has exceeded all expectations.
“It’s been really cool man, and some-thing I never expected,” Briggs told TE.
“When you’re making a record, you don’t really think about that kind of stuff but to see it happening is great. Also, there’s been a great vibe on the tour as well and it’s really cool to see how far the music has reached - I mean there are people at shows who know the joints word for word, and that’s really cool.”
Briggs hones in on his hometown of Shepparton as the main inspiration for the album, which features collabora-tions from ther likes of Ill Bill, Sietta and Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu, and the result is a punchy collection of tracks that are a poignant reflection of the rapper’s rural upbringing.

“When I set out to make this record, I kind of felt like a whole new artist and it really felt like my first record,” he said.
“This one is was more about putting together a complete piece of art with a unifying vision than it was about just getting a bunch of rap songs together which is kind of the way I approached The Blacklist - there’s definitely a lot more direction and focus on this album.
“Each song on Sheplife is a piece of the overall puzzle.”
STEPHEN BISSET If you needed evidence of the breadth of film talent that exists in the Hunter region, then you need look no further
than the recently wrapped feature, Yester-day’s Girl.
Filmed at various locations throughout the Hunter Valley, the film also utilised the talents of a largely Hunter-based cast and crew, including director Mike Garrick from Merewether.
“We shot the film over a period of around 30 days and we shot in places like Lamb’s Valley, Paterson, Catherine Hill Bay and Kooragang Island,” Garrick told TE.
“A lot of the cast and crew are from the area too, and there is obviously quite a lot of talent in the region.
“Also, it really is a great place to make films - there are world class locations here and there are a lot of constraints that exist in places like Sydney, such as traffic issues and the like, that you don’t have to deal with here.”
Starring Kaysia Dowie and Chris Baird, Yesterday’s Girl tells the story of a woman who wakes up in a field, recalling her own death 70 years prior. Before too long, she finds someone in a similar predicament and they soon discover they are being stalked by a remorseless foe. In their efforts to flee they encounter a world of plague, destruction and madness. Their only hope
lies in returning to the field where they awoke and face the adversary who has left them with a terrible choice.
The ambitious project was not without its challenges, either, with the script calling for a decimated Stockton Bridge and a scene, shot in Lambs Valley, requiring 120 residents pretending to be dead or in the throes of dying.
“Yes, shooting 120 people pretending to be dead can be a bit of a challenge, but everyone was great and we managed to pull it off, I think,” Garrick said.
With principal photography done and dusted, Garrick said it was now on to the post-production phase with an end goal of getting the film onto the nation’s television screens.
