CAUTION

The few firms that have registered 2009 projects caution you to know it fully before making claims about what you can deliver. For instance, EAc1 with ASHRAE 90.1-2007 is a much

more difficult base case threshold. 10% energy improvements are challenging.

Long-term reporting of energy performance (5 years) is required.

LEED 2009 Highlights

Page 12: LEED - What's Goin On?

LEED 2009 includes three major enhancements to the LEED rating system: harmonization, credit weightings, and regionalization.

Harmonization:• Credits and prerequisites from all LEED commercial and

institutional rating systems have been consolidated and aligned… most effective common denominators, … consistent across all LEED 2009 rating systems.

• Necessary precedent-setting and clarifying information from Credit Interpretation Rulings (CIRs) were incorporated into the rating systems.

• LEED for Homes and LEED for Neighborhood Development will not be changed under LEED 2009.

LEED 2009 HighlightsHarmonization

Page 13: LEED - What's Goin On?

Credit weightings:• …now have different weightings depending on their ability to impact

different environmental and human health concerns.

• …LEED now awards more points for strategies that will have greater positive impacts on what matters most – energy efficiency and CO2 reductions.

• Each credit was evaluated against a list of 13 environmental impact categories, including climate change, indoor environmental quality, resource depletion and water intake, among many others.

• The impact categories were prioritized, … giving the most value to credits that have the highest potential for making the biggest change.

• The credits are all intact; they are just worth different amounts. As a result, LEED 2009 will operate on a 100-point scale.

LEED 2009 Highlights Weighting

Page 14: LEED - What's Goin On?

• Credit weightings tool: Download to learn all about what went into the weightings process (ZIP) »

Examples:• SSc4.1: The proximity of a building to public transportation allows

for building occupants to utilize alternative transportation …. It affects a large component of the building’s environmental impact – its carbon footprint associated with transportation to and from the building. LEED for New Construction 2009 has increased the point value of this credit.

• WE Credit Category: Reduction in water use … While the impacts of these credits were primarily in water use, the benefits of water reduction are heavily emphasized in LEED for New Construction 2009.

• EAc2: Utilizing renewable energy for a building’s energy needs reduces the dependency on less environmentally sound energy sources, …

New in LEED 2009

• Water Efficiency Prerequisite – 20% water use reduction

• Water Use Reduction – 30% water use reduction = 2 points– 35% water use reduction = 3 points– 40% water use reduction = 4 points

• Energy Use Prerequisite– 10% more efficient than ASHRAE 90.1-2007

Regionalization:– Through USGBC’s regional councils, chapters and

affiliates, regionally specific environmental issues were identified. For a project’s specific location, six LEED credits have been prioritized because they address the specific environmental issues. The project will be awarded up to four extra points (one point per credit) for earning the priority credits.

New in LEED 2009

Examples from LEED for New Construction 2009: – Urban Florida: SSc5.2, MRc1.1, WEc2, EAc1, MRc5, and

EQc8.1, to incentivize (among other things) decreased reliance on fossil fuels, reuse of existing building stock, decreased reliance on insufficient municipal wastewater plants, and utilization of abundant local sunshine.

– Rural Michigan: SSc1, SSc6.1, SSc6.2, SSc8, MRc5.2, and EAc2, to incentivize (among other things) the preservation of prime agricultural land, reduction of light trespass into neighboring natural habitats, and minimizing the amount and improving the quality of stormwater into the Great Lakes.

I’m already a LEED AP. Do I need to retest to stay active?

No. If you are already a LEED AP, you do not need to retest if you opt in within two years and satisfy the maintenance requirements. Reference CMP Enrollment Guide Valid for July 2009 for LEED APs without specialty http://www.gbci.org/ShowFile.aspx?DocumentID=3666

How do I fit into the new tiered system as a current LEED AP? What do I need to do?

THE Frequently Asked Questions

Page 26: LEED - What's Goin On?

• Starting August 3, 2009 GBCI will begin sending emails to existing LEED APs, letting them know that their enrollment window is open. They will have two years to enroll from the date noted in their email. Emails containing open enrollment windows will be staggered through October 2009 to ensure a smooth enrollment process.

• LEED APs without specialty can view their enrollment window through My Credentials on the GBCI website, www.gbci.org, beginning August 3, 2009. The schedule is alphabetically driven and will be posted on www.gbci.org to provide LEED APs with a sense of when their enrollment window will be open. During the enrollment window, LEED APs without specialty will have three options:

Page 27: LEED - What's Goin On?

1. Do nothing - you will be designated a LEED AP without a specialty title in the LEED Professional Directory.

– Reference LEED APs Without Specialty and Enrollment FAQs

http://www.gbci.org/DisplayPage.aspx?CMSPageID=110

2. Become a LEED AP+ by enrolling in the new tiered system – agree to the Credentialing Maintenance Program (CMP) and signing the Disciplinary Policy and completing the prescriptive CMP requirements for the initial 2-year reporting period. Once you have enrolled, you will use one of the new specialty designations (O&M, BD&C, ID&C) after your name.  Enrollment must occur before June 2011.

Page 28: LEED - What's Goin On?

3. Become a LEED AP+ by passing one of the new specialty exams - only part 2 of a LEED AP+ exam will be required if testing by June 2011. When applying for the exam you will need to sign the Disciplinary Policy and agree to CMP.  You will need to complete the ongoing CMP for your designation and will use one of the new specialty designations (O&M, BD&C, ID&C) after your name.

1. The National USGBC develops LEED curriculum (Technical Workshops) These are instructed by trained LEED Faculty through USGBC Chapters.  The curriculum focuses specifically on the LEED Rating System at the 100-300 learning levels.

The Green Building Design & Construction: The LEED Implementation Process workshop being held in N. Kansas City, MO on Thursday, September 17, 2009 has been posted to our website and registration is now open for up to 40 attendees.

Stay tuned for LEED for Schools coming this Fall!!

2. Organizations can develop Education Provider Programs for 100 and 200 level training and receive credits to apply towards the USGBC LEED continuing education requirement. These educational offerings complement USGBC courses.

Be looking for an upcoming “LEED Boot Camp” this fall.

The Local AIA, and Builders Association are in Collaboration with the USGBC to develop these programs for the Region to satisfy the USGBC requirements, AIA Sustainable Credits, and Contractor Licensing Credits, while providing PDH’s for Professional Engineers.
