Choosing what to do when you finish your GCSEs can be quite daunting. This page is designed to help you decide which is the right choice for you...

5 GCSEs at Grade A*-C including English and maths OR a Level 2 related qualification - for Apprenticeships, relevant work experience will also be considered

A-Levels Progress to Higher Education or university or use your skills to start work

Level 4/5 If you are going on to Higher Education and possibly university, you can take Level 4 and 5 qualifications like HNCs/HNDs and foundation degrees right here at College.

Level 5/6 Your HND will allow you to go on to University. Here at LMC, we have partnerships with UCLan, University of Cumbria and Lancaster University.

Vocational Qualifications or A-Levels?Well, a vocational qualification, which is what you would complete at LMC, leads to a specific career path and is great if you prefer ‘hands-on’ learning and coursework rather than exams. That’s not to say there won’t be exams, but there will be a mix of practical and written assessments. All the courses at LMC are led by qualified teaching professionals, with industry experience, ensuring that you achieve a balance of academic theory and practical work.

In contrast, A-Levels are theory-based and feature more exams; quite often, this is considered a traditional route to take through your school’s sixth form. Whilst most believe you need to have A-Levels to gain a university education, this is not the case. Both types of qualification are highly respected by employers and universities and equate to the relevant UCAS points required to apply to university.

The choice is yours and we’re here to help you make it! See the next page for progression routes from vocational qualifications and apprenticeships at LMC.

Vocational qualifications have led on to many great careers; just ask Jamie Oliver, Simon Cowell, Alesha Dixon or Karen Millen – who all studied them at college.

One question we get asked a lot is

‘what is the difference between doing A-Levels and doing a vocational

qualification at college?’

Maths & English

At LMC we are passionate and committed to helping you improve your maths and English skills knowing that these will improve your opportunities in life, education and work. To prepare directly for employment or university, you will need to have A*-C GCSE maths and English and at LMC we will do all we can to support you to achieve this.

These subjects will be an important part of your studies at College. If you do not have an A*-C GCSE you will be ‘working towards’ Functional Skills maths and English or GCSE maths and English. If you have a Grade D for either of these subjects, you are likely to be studying GCSE as part of your course.

While at LMC, you will be constantly encouraged to improve maths and English skills in all aspects of your course.

Whatever area you want to work in, maths and English skills are important. Here’s what some of the employers we work with have to say.

Travel & Tourism“Sales are a big part of the Travel & Tourism industry. Our students use maths for calculating holiday costings, excursion tickets, currency conversions, flight times, time differences, brochure costings etc.”

“Our students use English skills when they are completing industry documents, public speaking, customer service correspondence, producing promotional material, researching and providing information for customers.”

Hospitality“Maths is vitally important in hospitality - without being able to do your costings correctly, you’ll never keep your business afloat.”

“Hospitality students use ratios to scale up and scale down recipe quantities.”

“Both written and verbal communication skills with customers is essential in hospitality.”

Business“Business students use ratios and percentages when producing business accounts.”

“Business students use English skills when writing copy for marketing materials.”

MondayToday we started learning about airline emergency procedures and evacuations. I was surprised to learn that there are planned and unplanned emergency landing techniques that cabin crew must follow in different situations. We are very luck that we have airline seats and equipment in our classroom which makes the learning realistic and fun. For our assessment we had to work in teams to evacuate the passengers assertively and calmly from the aircraft. In order to do this we have to shout instructions at the passengers to get them off the aircraft quickly. This assessment definitely gets the adrenalin going. This always causes an uproar in the corridor and other classrooms as everyone wants to join in with this fun lesson.

This evening I am helping out at the College Open Evening as a Student Ambassador as I have been at college studying Travel and Tourism for 2 years and know my way around pretty well. Part of my role of Student Ambassador is to provide guided tours around the college and chat to potential students.

Tuesday This has been the best day of the course so far. I have been looking forward to today and it did not disappoint! We jumping in the college minibus and headed to Woodford Aerodrome near Manchester airport to take part in a Thomas Cook Airlines Cabin Crew Training day where we spent the day being trained by Thomas Cook safety trainers. We took part in aircraft fire fighting exercises where we had to put out a real aircraft toilet fire using fire extinguishers. We had to find and put out a fire on board an aircraft this was made hard because the aircraft was in darkness and filled with smoke. We had to wear smoke hoods so that we could breathe safely. We all felt relieved that we had taken part in this exercise because this is done as part of the airlines training course and can be quite frightening if you have not done it before. We also practiced opening and closing different types of aircraft doors and they are surprisingly heavy to move and I now understand why it is important to be fit and healthy to work as cabin crew. What an amazing day out we had but it makes more even more excited and determined to work as cabin crew.

A week in the life of Jordan, Cabin Crew Student Wednesday We had 2 members of the RAF come to visit us today to talk about job opportunities. I didn’t know that the RAF have cabin crew until today and that they have a similar day to day role to normal cabin crew. A big part of working as cabin crew is being able to work as a team so we spent a half a day in teams doing team building activities which was fun. They told us about the different career opportunities, salaries, training and recruitment process. On Wednesday’s some students on my course do Maths and English GCSE to improve their grades to a C Grade, I already have C grades so I don’t need to attend this class, I went to the hex to update my CV for one of my subjects.

ThursdayI don’t have any lessons on a Thursday so I spent the morning in the Hex finishing off my survival assignment for next week. In the Hex there are plenty of computers and staff making it easy to keep up-to-date with coursework.

FridayI don’t have any lessons on Fridays so I work in a local bar/restaurant during the day and most of the weekend. This helps me gain customer service experience which all the airlines ask for.

Next week I am looking forward to practicing my interview skills in a formal mock interview with an ex student who is now working for Virgin Atlantic Airlines. I am hoping to get some helpful hits and tips about getting the job!

If you are looking for more out of College than just a course, the LMC Students’ Union is a great place to start!Run for students by students, the Union has two sides: representation and entertainment.

The Student Council, made up of class reps and student officers, gives you the opportunity to get your voice heard about issues that concern all College students. Whether it’s about more healthy food on offer, better chill out spaces for students or the next student awareness campaign, these are all issues that the Student Council has worked with the College to solve.

The SU is also here to make College a more entertaining and exciting place by supporting students to set up their own clubs and societies and organise cross-college events like Freshers’ Fair and the LMC Festival.

So whether you are passionate about film, football or fighting for justice, the SU can help you meet other students who are into the same things as you and gain great experience in event management!

If you don’t fancy getting involved straight away, that’s no problem! When you join LMC, you automatically become a member of the SU and can get great discounts by buying the NUS Extra card.

Student VoiceHere at LMC we really want to listen to you, what you think, what youíd like, your ideas. One way to do this is to become a Student Rep, or be a part of the SU. We know, though, that many of you have far to travel, part time jobs or other family commitments. Some of you don’t get into College that often as you are in the workplace as an Apprentice or employee.

Worry not, you can still get your views across, just use the student

e-voice - email us at [email protected] and we promise we’ll reply and address your comments and ideas. Your views matter to us.

VolunteeringWe believe volunteering is really valuable to you and to our community, and we encourage you to get involved. It does not have to be at College either, it can be in your local community, for a voluntary organisation or at a nature reserve, for example. We have a Volunteer Scheme, which awards students for their voluntary work annually with bronze, silver or gold awards that recognise your commitment. The skills you gain are valuable and look great on a UCAS application or a CV.

Why should you do an Apprenticeship?Deciding between further classroom based study and an Apprenticeship can be a difficult decision. But don’t worry too much. There is no right or wrong answer here. Just different paths that lead to different experiences. Plus no matter which path you choose University is still open to you.

An Apprenticeship is a great choice for those who want to continue their studies but feel a formal classroom environment does not suit them. The kind of person who

wants to learn by doing in the real world. That is a very important point to make. An Apprenticeship is with a real employer for real wages. They will expect you to turn up and work hard every day. In return you start the process of learning the skills that in the long term earn you a good salary.

At LMC we offer a broad range of different qualification frameworks and work with 600+ plus employers in our local area. We are offering you the start of your career. Now.

What are the advantages of doing an Apprenticeship? If you can’t wait to get started in your chosen career, and don’t want to choose between gaining qualifications and earning a salary, an Apprenticeship offers you the best of both worlds!

Remember: there are no bad choices here but Apprenticeships do have some advantages over classroom study and beyond that university.

“Apprenticeships are thriving in England, and it’s not hard to see why. They offer ambitious young people unrivalled career prospects and personal development opportunities. Apprentices earn while they learn in a real job, gaining a nationally recognised qualification and a bright future.

“Young people can ‘get in and go far’ with an apprenticeship at some of Britain’s biggest and brightest companies. They can gain the skills and knowledge they need to succeed up to degree level, while working and earning.

“Apprentices’ opportunities for career progression are increasing with the expansion of higher and degree apprenticeships, which are available up to honours degree level. More of these specialised and highly skilled apprenticeships are being offered each year, enabling apprentices to train to degree level in more sectors than ever before, providing further opportunities for individuals to fully realise their potential and maximise their career progression.”

Sue Husband, Director of the National Apprenticeship Service

• Advanced Apprentices earn on average £150,000 more over their career than those who do not follow any form of further education.

• No fees. Nothing. No student debts. All Apprenticeship programmes are fully funded as long as you don’t already have a degree.

• You get to start your career earlier than others. You can start an Apprenticeship at 16. By the time your friends have left university you will already have five years value work experience which will really appeal to future employers. Who are you going to choose?

• You get paid! The minimum is the Apprenticeship rate which is £3.30 from October 2015 but many employers pay more than this. Now, let’s be honest, you can earn more working in fast food but with an Apprenticeship you are gaining value skills, training and experience that will lay the foundations for a really great career.

• You can still go to university. Universities respect the Apprenticeship system and the qualifications and experience they provide. You can progress onto access courses, HNC’s and HND’s or even go direct onto a university course.

• An additional advantage is knowing your career choice i right for you having worked in the industry throughout your Apprenticeship. What could be worse than doing three years at uni then releasing you don’t enjoy the job you have trained for.

Is it for me?- If you feel that a work based learning

programme is for you and are aged 16 to 24 without a full Level 3 qualification, a Traineeship might be for you.

- If you have little or no work experience, a Traineeship might be for you.

Being a Trainee means you will be provided with a quality work placement in an employment sector of your choice. You will need to undertake a minimum of 100 hours on placement.

You will gain quality work skills and a chance to acquire a Level 2 qualification in employability (if applicable) to aid in your progression and development.

Over the course of your placement, you will work with your tutor and placement provider to develop the skills and experience you need to progress and succeed.

You will also gain valuable work experience and transferable skills to improve your CV and boost your overall employment chances and aid in your progression on to an apprenticeship or employment.

Stan Eden Case StudyStan moved to the Morecambe area from Buckinghamshire half way into the academic year and therefore needed to undertake an education or training course. It was too far into the academic year to progress onto a Further Education course therefore Stan elected to undertake a Traineeship programme to provide him an insight into the world of work.

Stan has undertaken two different work placements over the course of his Traineeship, in two completely different areas to provide him a broad work experience.

His first placement was in Retail at Motormaina, and his second placement was in Business Administration in a school office. Stan has excelled in both environments and would have been offered a position at Motormania if he could drive.

Stan has now identified his career pathway and set targets and goals for himself to achieve along the way. Upon completion of his Traineeship Stan will progress onto Level 2 Business at LMC with his eventual aim to progress to university and undertake accountancy.

Stan feels the Traineeship programme has helped him gain an understanding of the work environment and work culture and aided his integration into his new life in the Morecambe area.

“I chose Preparation for Air Cabin Crew because it was the right course to start me on my chosen career path and it I knew it would provide me valuable experience that would aid my progression. The best bits of the course were the opportunities it gave me. There was so much I learned about the travel industry and I got to go on some fantastic trips. Going Outward Bound to Build SkillsTwelve of our Full time students took part in an outward bound course sponsored by EDF Energy. The trip included an overnight expedition, sleeping on the mountainside and carrying rations.

The students had to work as a team to help each other conquer the challenge which included some strange twists like having to compete part of the journey by using a traditional rigged 15 person sailboat and cliff traversing above icy cold water.

The students did not know it but at times they were being assessed on various things from leadership qualities through to problem solving. All data collected was analysed and fed back to students via EDF, LMC and outward bound staff. This was then used to develop individual skill sets and progress students to further study and Apprenticeships.

Traineeship Case Study - Stan EdenStan moved to the Morecambe area from Buckinghamshire half way into the academic year and therefore needed to undertake an education or training course.

I have really enjoyed this course, meeting new people and proving to myself I can do it, are just some of the things that have made this experience so worthwhile. I will be going to university to study Child Nursing in September; where there were 400+ applicants originally for the course, and they interviewed just 100 people to take 7 places, one of which is now mine!

I chose the Access course because I needed to gain the right qualifications to get into university, LMC was the closest college to me and everyone seemed really friendly when I came in for my interview.

I would tell anyone thinking about doing this course that although it is not easy, and is an intense course, it is so worth it for the results you can achieve. You can begin your dream career at LMC! ”Lisa Williams, Access to Higher Education
