Mi familia mexicana era súper
agradable, comprensiva a lo largo de mi
estadía, contrario a lo que temía. El año
pasado, hubo un estudiante que no hacía
caso de las reglas de la casa. Una noche el
estudiante se
comportó de manera
inapropiada lo que
provocó la furia de
Alfonso. Por eso,
Alfonso no quería
alojar a estudiantes.
La presión para
que nosotros nos
comportáramos como
adultos maduros para
Alfonso cambiara de opinión era intensa.
¡Qué benévolo y paciente era él!
Consecuentemente, los padres fueron los
anfitriones perfectos. Alfonso es el dueño de
un cibercafé: los clientes pueden sacar
copias baratas y hacer muchas copias más
fácilmente que regresar a sus oficinas muy
lejos de todo. A Alfonso muchos clientes lo
admiran porque él ayudaba la comunidad,
pero el gobierno le daba problemas. Por eso
dedicaba muchas horas para mantener la
tienda. Ahora trabaja
más en la casa,
ayudando a sus hijos a
prepararse para la
escuela. Él cocina, lava la
ropa, limpia la casa y se
encarga de las finanzas.
Carmen, su esposa, es
muy bonita, amable y
dedicada, además nos
exhortaba mucho para
que platicáramos solamente en español.
Había días que no queríamos hablar, y
resultaba muy difícil formar una frase
completa e inteligente; ya que ella es
maestra de estudiantes discapacitados, ella

sabía ayudarnos y tenía mucha paciencia
aunque a veces sonábamos incoherentes.
Cuando ellos invitaban a sus
parientes a la casa, nos exhortaban a
conversar y contar nuestras historias. Por
ejemplo, celebramos el 4 de Julio con la
familia, y Alfonso invitó a sus amigos a
cenar con nosotros en su
casa. Al principio, Jasón
y yo estábamos
nerviosos—
especialmente porque
recientemente habíamos conocido a Alfonso
y a Carmen.
Alfonso y Carmen crían a tres hijos
Halo, Call of Duty y Assasin’s Creed. Juan
bien a Israel. Israel es muy
maduro e inteligente;
prefiere estudiar y operar
computadora. Compró el Xbox 360 y lo
armó para compartir con la familia. A Israel

hacía difícil conocer a nuevos estudiantes
Eventualmente, día a día, poco a poco, ella

My Mexican family was super pleasant, sympathetic, and fun every day of my stay, contrary to
my worst fear. Last year, there was a student who had usually ignored every rule of the house
and one night this student behaved despicably, causing Alfonso to be completely furious. For
this reason, Alfonso did not want to host students. There was great pressure for us to behave
like mature adults in order to relax Alfonso in his decision to accept more students in general.
How benevolent and patient Alfonso was!, and as a result, he and his wife were perfect hosts.
Alfonso is the owner of an internet coffee shop: customers can use the cheap printers and make
copies more conveniently than to return to offices far away from everything. Many clients
admire him because he helped the community, but the government gave him problems and he
devoted many hours to maintain the store. Now he works more in the house, helping to prepare
the children for the semester. He cooks, washes clothes, cleans the house, and understands the
finances. Carmen, his very beautiful wife, friendly and dedicated, supported Jason and me to
speak only in Spanish. There were days that we didn't want to talk, and it was very difficult to
form a complete and intelligent sentence; because she is a teacher for students with disabilities,
she understood how to help us and had lots of patience, although we sounded crazy. When they
invited the family to the house for occasions, they encouraged us to talk and tell our stories. For
example, we celebrated the 4th of July with them this year, and Alfonso invited their friends to
eat dinner with us at his home. In the beginning, Jason and I were nervous to talk to them-‐
especially because we had recently we met Alfonso and Carmen. But after a little talk and
dinner, the atmosphere was very comfortable.
Alfonso and Carmen raise three diverse children: Israel, the oldest; Mariana, the middle
daughter; and Juan Pablo, the youngest. Jason and I admired them very much, but
5
subconsciously we chose to make friends with a specific child. Because Jason has lots of energy,
and he likes playing video games for hours, he chose Juan Pablo to be his close friend. Like
crazy kids, they played football in the house, ran, and played shooting video games: Halo, Call
of Duty, and Assassin’s Creed. John Paul is quiet, but he liked to cry and laugh in some
situations.
Contrastingly, I chose to know Israel well. Israel is very mature and intelligent; he prefers to
study and operate technology and he operated the media in the house to see movies on the big
TV from the computer. He bought the Xbox 360 and set it up to share with the family. Israel
liked to cook and listen to our conversations with his parents and to contribute something very
important too; like Carmen, if we needed translation, he helped us and spoke English elegantly.
During my first dinner in the house, he and I spoke Spanish until very early in the morning
and until it hurt my head. Mariana did not like us much in the beginning. She dined for a few
minutes with the family and left the table quickly, only said some greetings, and left the room
when Jason and I entered. She seemed to me to be very quiet, thoughtful, educated, and fun; I
just wanted to know her better instead of the uncomfortable silence. I realized that it was
difficult for the children to meet new students every five months, and I allowed more time in
order for her to get used to us. Eventually, day by day little by little, she ate with us longer and
longer, and said more, and I loved seeing her smile.
During our stay, I felt as if I had been adopted by the family and the children were my real
siblings. They demonstrated to me how a strong and loving family should be, and that nothing
in life is more important than family!
