Bob Dylan, who pioneered songwriting and sparked several genres of music, is a living legend of Rock. Much of his most celebrated work dates from the 1960s. A number of Dylan’s early songs became anthems for the US civil rights and anti-war movements at that time. The author of Mr. Tambourine Man will perform tonight at Auditorium Stravinski.

FLASH

MUSIQUE, ON TOURNE!

MUSIC ON THE SET!

A plague is infecting concert halls. In Montreux and elsewhere, it is now impossible to watch and listen to an artist perform without the visual pollution of a mise en abîme from grainy phone screens as members of the audience busy themselves filming their favorite song. At Lana Del Rey on Wednesday, at M.I.A. the next day, the front rows of Miles Davis Hall looked like a wall of paparazzi at a photo call. I beg of you, dear audience members, stop spoiling the experience for your fellow concert-goers and stealing the intellectual property of the artists: stow your cameras and, instead, enjoy the work of the Montreux Jazz Festival’s audiovisual

production team. For your viewing pleasure, no fewer than four trailers are churning away in the lower levels of the building, editing together, in real time, sound and image from every con-cert. This is heavy artillery: mobile recording studios, from which all the images projected in the concert halls are controlled in the smallest detail, and also where performances by all the artists (except those having refused to be re-corded) are put in the can. This high-wire act requires Luca de Luigi, this evening’s director at the Miles Davis Hall, strapped into his cockpit, to juggle feeds from all the different cameras with the dexterity of an orchestra conductor and the lilting verve of a Roberto Benigni. Next door, on board ‘Voyager 2,’ sound engineer René Weis alternately examines his display and his mixing table: “We capture the feeds from the microphones at the venue which we record as multiple tracks and which we mix live. Then we synchronize the sound with the video for delivery to the archives and the media.” That stage is carried out upstairs, in the post-production studio that, while being heavily charged with testosterone, nevertheless has a team of young men who do their own vacuuming while singing the praises of their boss, Fanny. Remaining calm amidst the youthful ferment of her team, she coordinates the editing of the songs chosen for submission to the media and for rebroadcast in external Montreux Jazz Café, as well as the archiving of the concerts on DVDs and HD cassettes. One copy is given to the artist, but the rest head towards Claude Nobs’ chalet, where they will add to the already gargantuan collection that he has amassed and which will soon be recognized by UNESCO’s World Heritage list. So for that reason if for no other, put away your smartphone and actually watch the concert!

HIGHLIGHTS

Sometimes, you don’t need much for a musical adventure to begin. This is what happened to three young women who, on a cold night in 2010 started sharing a bottle of wine and a head full of euphoric ideas and finally published a year later a first EP under the mysterious name of Euphròsina.

Their songs reveal various aspects of folk music, sometimes melodramatic like Clementine, sometimes fanciful like Tractor Song. Their lyrics tell stories of sailors, young women and imaginary friends.

Each one of their appearances on stage is an invitation to enter their poetic labyrinth--don’t miss their concert on the bucolic stage of the Parc Vernex.

Frank Heinrich (aka Reboot) is far from be-ing a novice in music. After classical training in music and instruments, he discovered the world of DJing at the age of 13. One year later, he was producing his first songs. Although still underage, this didn’t prevent him from starting to mix in the clubs of Frankfurt. He later formed a duet called “Delle & Heinrich” with Marco Delle Donne before resuming his solo career in 2006.

His music includes influences from house, techno, world and jazz music. His recipe for a good set? Melding the cerebral and the visceral. The Studio | 8.07.2012 | dès 18h - from 6pm

INTERVIEW

Rien. Vous chanteriez probablement le blues comme

moi. « Où est-elle », n’est-ce pas ? (rires). On ne peut pas s’en passer. Benjamin Keller

This is the 11th time you are here at the Montreux Jazz Festival. Is there a concert you remember in particular?

All of them! Every time I am invited here, I’m thrilled. I’ve been here with B.B. King, Carlos Santana and some of the greatest musicians I’ve ever met. I have so much fun when I come here and play with those guys, I can’t just say: “oh yeah, this particular one was better than the others.” It gets better and better every time that I come.

You started playing the guitar at the age of 16…For my parents it was all work. We didn’t have

time for music and we couldn’t aff ord guitars, pianos and drums, and things like that. Then fi nally we got a radio when I was about 16 or 17 years old and that’s when I started listening to Lightnin’ Hopkins and all those great Blues

players that I learned a lot from.

Do you think it is easier for kids nowadays to break through in Blues music?

That’s a tough question. We didn’t have as much technology when I was a kid. Today you can even watch a teacher on television, teach-ing you how to play the guitar. But I didn’t have that, I had to sit there with my ear and try to fi gure out what De Lay, John Lee Hooker and Lightnin’ Hopkins were doing.

If this Festival were a woman what would you say to seduce her?

I would say “I love you” all day. I couldn’t get out of that song. I think if you take most Blues players in Soul, in Rock, and you listen to them, in the end they all have something to do with a good looking woman or a woman, period. We sing about every day life, the way we live and the conditions we live in today, the economy. A woman always winds up in that song regard-less of what happens. What would we do here if we didn’t have a good-looking woman? What would you do?

Nothing. You would probably be singing the blues like

me. “Where is she,” right? (laughter). We can’t get along without them.

Benjamin Keller

LE QUERREC EXPOSED

If you take a stroll through the second fl oor of the Petit Palais, you will cross paths with Cecil Taylor at the piano in a beat-up cap and worn-out shorts, and Miles Davis smoking on the trumpet with crazy eyes, and even Dizzy Gillespie snoozing on a couch. These towering figures of jazz are part of French photogra-pher Guy Le Querrec’s photography exhibition entitled “Jazz de J à ZZ,” based on his book by the same name. Sixty photographs have been specially selected to trace the photographer’s artistic itinerary.

“These photos are like a trail of breadcrumbs,” the witty Le Querrec explained, after leading a workshop on Friday. “I chose some powerful im-ages, but also some with less impact but that still manage to show the path I took.” The workshop

itself was less about Le Querrec’s path than his relationship with the subjects of his photos.

As was to be expected from a storyteller from Brittany, Le Querrec took the workshop participants on a clandestine journey through the back rooms of the jazz world, peppering his stories with anecdotes and little-known facts. Referring to himself as “a jazz photographer rather than a photographer of jazz,” he expressed his preference for working in an improvisational style. This was his fi rst visit to the Montreux Jazz Festival, and he was making the most of the experience—prowling the backstage areas, Leica in hand, his finger never far from the shutter release.

3 QUESTIONS

Benjamin Keller

Who is the naked man? Everybody wants to know.

To sum it up, I’m Jordan Miles, I live in California, I skate board, I surf, I paint and I hike… I just enjoy my life. I don’t really work too hard, I work enough to get my life going but I keep it simple.

Do you realize you are the most wanted guy in the Festival? I saw you before and you were sur-rounded by girls! Did you expect this type of reaction?

It’s a little crazy! I was warned a little bit but not to the extent that it has been. I mean, I didn’t think it would be… I didn’t think I’d be this recognizable at first, you know. I thought it would be more discreet. But it’s out there.

How did you end up working with Greg Gorman for this poster?

We shoot a lot together. Actually, I pretty much only shoot with Greg and I do workshops for him. He came to me and said he wanted to do the poster. At first I didn’t realize how big of a thing it would be. But I agreed to do it, so we did it and it worked. The reason why we decided me to do it is that I’m a good friend of Greg’s. He really wanted to put me out there and see what happened.
