A wonderful concert with hearing music expressing visual art.

The piano is called on for the rendition of paintings of

different periods and from different schools. Seen from

this perspective, paintings appear to be colorful music.

Music and paintings constitute different forms of artistic presentation

but human thoughts are at the core of both of them. Music and

paintings are never isolated from each other, but rather common

products of the human minds and social cultures of a specific historical

period. Though they differ in the way of artistic representation, music

and paintings both reflect human mentality, social contexts and the

world we inhabit.

Take an overview of the history of music and paintings, and we can

detect prominent distinctions in music and paintings created in different

periods that are largely brought about by the changes taking place in

human thoughts which are in turn shaped by the culture and historical

background of that time. Music and paintings are animated first-hand

historical documents through whose acquaintance and understanding

we can experience the uniqueness and fusion of cultures and the

inimitable soul of every human being.

4. 新古典主义摒弃了洛可可艺术的浮夸和华美,而力求简单理性的刻画主题 ;

1. Neoclassical paintings give prominence to clear outlines and complete

structures while classical music created well-structured sonatas.

2. Neoclassical paintings feature harmony and unity, lacking in intense

changes of hues. The human expressions also tend to be tranquil. Much

classical music is uniformly rhythmic and unchangeable in volumes.

3. Neoclassical paintings depict meticulous details effortlessly while classical

music begins to employ homophony rather than polyphony for rendition,

strengthening uniform rhythm and weakening the rest so as to achieve

clarity and simplicity.

4. Neoclassicism rejects Rococo-style pomp and seeks simple and rational

depictions while classical music shuns Baroque style and embraces

simplicity.

5. Neoclassicism upholds rationality while retaining a romanticist tinge.

Classical music features exterior logic and order and interior complexity

and unpredictability.

6. Neoclassical paintings focus on symmetry, depicting the background

with linear perspective while classical sonatas feature exposition and

recapitulation.

Romantic Paintings and Music

Romanticism expresses emotions, freedom, individuality, fantasy and politics.

Comparison between romantic paintings and music:

1. Romantic paintings feature sharp coloring contrast and dynamic figures

with intense expressions while romantic music is characterized by change

of tempo and use of rubato, displaying individual importance and creating

many uncertainties in rhythm and variations in volume.

2. With a strong political and national sense, many war-depicting paintings

display the political preference of the painter, demonstrating the

importance of individuality and freedom. A landscape painting can

mean something politics-wise. British landscape paintings rail against

the intrusion of the industrial revolution into country life while American

landscape paintings deplore the pollution of the environment. In music,

nationalism and patriotism are getting more and more important. In

previous times when religious paintings and music prevail, every nation

looked the same. With the arrival of the Romantic Age, the artists began

to infuse more and more national traits into their works. So did romantic

musicians. For instance, Chopin created much Poland-style music, such

as polonaise and mazurka.

The 19th-century spokesman of romantic music

is Chopin, Polish composer and pianist, who was

born in Warsaw and then went to study in Warsaw

National Conservatory. In 1830, Warsaw insurrection

was seized and Chopin left for Paris, never to return.

Most of his works were composed in France. In 1836,

through Liszt, he met George Sand and lived with

her for 9 years during which period he reached his

creative peak and composed numerous well-known

works under her inspiration. He parted with her in

1846 for good and passed away in 1849.

“Beauty is life”, “An artist’s mission lies not in pursuing nonexistent beauty or glorifying life,

despotic political system. The creative principle and method of this painterly school are in direct

opposition to that of the Academic school. Anyone who joined this group or displayed his works in

the exhibition held by this group was deemed a member of this artistic school.

In the June of 1874, Mussorgsky composed the

piano suite “Pictures at an Exhibition”, inspired

by an exhibition consisting of works by his late

friend. He based his composition on ten exhibited

works which, however, had been long lost due

to improper preservation. This piano suite is not

only Mussorgsky’s masterpiece, but also one of

the most original works of 19th-century Russia.

The piano suite consists of ten sketches related

to pictures, with walking themes serving as the

intermezzo, revealing the bold ingenuity of the

composer. The piano suite is still widely popular

today.

In the June of 1874, Mussorgsky composed the

piano suite “Pictures at an Exhibition”, inspired

by an exhibition consisting of works by his late

friend. He based his composition on ten exhibited

works which, however, had been long lost due

to improper preservation. This piano suite is not

only Mussorgsky’s masterpiece, but also one of

the most original works of 19th-century Russia.

The piano suite consists of ten sketches related

to pictures, with walking themes serving as the

intermezzo, revealing the bold ingenuity of the

composer. The piano suite is still widely popular

today.

SHENZHEN EVENING NEWS

Shenzhen Senior High School Student, Tiansheng Sun Holding a Distinct Piano Concert

Piano Prince and Top Student in One

From Shenzhen Evening News: When it comes to piano concert, many people immediately come

up with such piano-performing stars as Lang Lang and Li Yundi, but tonight the star is a high school

student. On the evening of August 28th, in the Music Hall of the Normal College of Shenzhen

University, a piano concert quite out of the ordinary was held by a senior from Shenzhen Senior

High School student - Tiansheng Sun, drawing crowds of all ages. Noteworthy about the concert is

the fact that Sun combined music performance with painterly art, elevating the former to a height

that made the latter more comprehensible.

Beginning with neoclassical painting and classical music, Sun seemed to be an incarnation of

music, fascinating all present. Amid his rendition of Beethoven's “Moonlight” sonata, The

Starry Night by Van Gogh cascaded down in the background, interweaving the wistful melancholy

of two great souls. Though Sun is not the first student to hold a piano solo, he is definitely the

first one to join painting with music in such an effortless and flawless fashion. On site, a student

from Shenzhen University could not help but give him a thumb up, commenting that “within the

category of art, painting and music share the closest

bond. Music exists to please the ears while painting

is intended to please the eyes; music is the art of

sound while painting is the art of vision. Be it the

visual or auditory effect artists are pursuing, they

share the highest goal in their minds: infuse beauty

into people's life.” Speaking about his original

intention in holding such a distinctive concert, Sun

told the reporter that he just wanted to share with all

people the beauty underlying all forms of art.

Besides his talents in piano and fine arts, Sun is

also an exceptional student.

Seamless combination of piano and

painting, immaculate representation

of art’s universality
