May2013 THE NATIVITY SCENE

As our program year comes to a close, we say “so long” to some of our snowbird friends and look forward to seeing them again in the fall! And in the month of May, we celebrate some special events:

Mother’s Day – May 12

Our youth group will be making a special brunch after the 10:00 service in honor of mothers and other important female role models! Come and celebrate Mom with us!

Pentecost – May 19

Wear red for Pentecost, the third major festival day of the church (after Easter and Christmas)! This feast day celebrates the coming of the Holy Spirit, inspiring the church to grow and spread throughout the world, and giving gifts so that we all can share in Christ’s mission. This year, Pentecost coincides with the end of Nativity’s program year, so at the 10:00 service, our special celebration will include our end-of-year recognitions of children, youth, teachers, youth leaders, chapel leaders, and graduating seniors. And, we will honor our terrific choir!

Summer Programs Begin May 26

This year, Nativity will continue our regular Sunday worship schedule through the summer, with an 8:00 Rite I service and a 10:00 Rite II service. Sunday school will take a summer break, but Children’s Chapel will continue at the 10:00 service through the summer. See pages 8-9 for other summer children’s opportunities.

Youth Ministries Visioning Session – Sunday, May 5, 5:00 p.m.All teens and parents of teens, please come to our youth ministries visioning session on Sunday, May 5. We would like to know what YOU want out of your youth group. The session will be facilitated by Dr. Amy Jacober, a youth ministries specialist from the diocese, and youth and their parents will meet in separate small groups. Please come, especially if you haven’t participated in youth group recently – we really want to hear your hopes and dreams! The session starts with dinner for all at 5:00 p.m., and the visioning session begins promptly at 5:30 p.m.

What happened to change a group of fearful, dazed, grieving disciples into a group of committed, inspired believers

who would change the world? Without the physical presence of Jesus, without any particular education other than learning from him, with the threat of Roman persecution, how did these uneducated and ordinary people spread the news of Christ throughout the Roman empire? The story is found in the book of Acts, and it begins with the coming of the Holy Spirit. Most of us know that we believe in a God who is Three in One – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. But while we can get our minds around the concepts of God the Father and God the Son, many of us have trouble visualizing the Holy Spirit. The Bible describes the Spirit with metaphors like “a rush of a violent wind” and “tongues of fire,” but dramatic as those metaphors are, it’s still a hard concept to get one’s mind around. The Holy Spirit comes when a group of people is together, and inspires them individually and

communally. The Holy Spirit is active in the church and in the world today – healing, forgiving, inspiring, bringing people together for mission. The Spirit gives each of us special gifts for ministry: some have the gift of teaching, some of healing, some of compassion, some of service, some of generosity, some of leadership, etc. The Spirit recognizes that each of us is special and unique, and calls us to serve God based on the special gifts we have been given. It is the power of the Holy Spirit, I believe, that has empowered Church of the Nativity to grow so quickly in such a short time, teaching and inspiring and serving the world in Christ’s name. The Holy Spirit has entered this group of people at Nativity, bringing us together as one in mission, to serve each other and our community. On Pentecost, often known as “the birthday of the church,” we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit, and I give thanks for the work the Spirit has done in building our church community. Thanks be to God!

In Christ, Susan

Transforming lives with the love of God in Jesus Christ

When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Acts 2:1-2

ADULT EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES

POWER BIBLE STUDYOur series of studying the portraits on the wall of the great Hall of Faith of Hebrews Chapter 11 continues on Sunday mornings after ten o'clock worship. What we are studying now is the pivotal event of our historic faith before Jesus came: the Exodus event of Israel's deliverance from Egypt. This act of salvation by God prefigures the saving work that is completed and perfected by Jesus Christ. Dr. Wayne leads the conversation in the Music Classroom starting at 11:15 and dismisses at Noon.

BIBLE STUDY WEDNESDAYSIf you have ever wondered why Christians have been confused about the last book in the Bible, come to Bible Study Wednesdays at 6:00 Wednesdays and find yourself enlightened about what the Book of Revelation is really about. It actually is one of the most comforting books in all of Scripture, but the key is understanding the situation in the lives of the earliest Christians who read it. Dr. Wayne leads this 60-minute conversation in the Office Classroom guaranteed to dismiss by 7:00 p.m. Do yourself a favor and buy "The Book of Revelation for Dummies" by Helyer & Wagner which is available online at your favorite cyberspace bookseller. Come with your thinking caps securely affixed to your heads!

A note from the Flower Guild

The Nativity flower guild provides the altar flowers each Sunday and also the flowers that adorn our worship space for special holidays and events such as Christmas and Easter. The flowers may be dedicated in thanksgiving for blessings received or in memory of a loved one.

There are a few Sundays still available (including Mother’s Day on May 12th) for your dedications. Once you have decided which date you prefer, simply write your name on the Flower Chart (located on the wall near the office door) and complete the form provided, and return it to the church office. If you have any questions please contact Kathy Graf at [email protected].

UMOMThe Children's Outreach Committee has scheduled several opportunities to participate in the Read To Me events. This is a weekly literacy program for UMOM children ages 4 years old and up. Established twelve years ago with only a handful of books and a few of volunteers, Read To Me is now a strong and lively program that has a weekly average attendance of 50-70 children. Every Tuesday night, around 50-70 volunteers read with children. The program encourages literacy through positive one-on-one interactions. We will go as a group on June 4, July 9, and August 27. There are some restrictions: Children 13 and younger must volunteer with a parent or other adult. Please no children volunteers under the age of 5. Because groups must specify the number of people in the group please If RSVP to Shelley ([email protected]) if you want to participate.
