GLOBAL NO.1 SMELTER
SMELTING REFINING The anodes of 99.5% purity produced in the
smelting plant through the Flash Smelting
Process and Mitsubishi Continuous Smelting Process are transferred
to the refining
plant and then turned into electrolytic copper cathode of 99.99% or
higher purity through
electrolysis. LS-Nikko Copper’s electrolytic copper cathode
products received the
highest grade, Grade A, on the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) and
London Metal
Exchange (LME), proving its excellence in quality
internationally.
SMELTING PROCESS
Smelting is the process of producing the anodes of 99.5% or higher
purity by taking the
ore taken from the copper mine through various processes.
Manufacturing various
chemical products using the sulfurous acid gas produced in this
process and producing
slimes of precious metals and rare metals needed in various
industries, such as IT, are
also a part of the smelting operation.
TECHNOLOGY LS-Nikko Copper’s Onsan Plant uses two methods; Flash
Smelting Process and the Mitsubishi
Continuous Smelting Process, and has the world’s top level
operating technology. Onsan Plant is the
world’s first plant that enabled the use of two techniques; the
Flash Smelting Process and Mitsubishi
Continuous Smelting Process, in a single plant, and these methods
were selected as one of the ‘100
Technologies that Led the Economic Growth of Korea for 60 Years in
Modern History’ by the National
Academy of Engineering of Korea in 2010, being recognized for the
accomplishment of becoming the
world’s second largest electrolytic copper cathode products maker
by achieving optimum productivity
through the use of the advantages of the two methods in a single
plant for the first time in the world.
TECHNOLOGY Onsan Plant changed the production facilities of the
First Refining Plant in 2005 from a conventional
electrolysis process to a KIDD process with greater advantages in
terms of technology and
productivity. Also, the plant introduced the Robotic Type CSM
(Cathode Stripping Machine) technology
for the first time in the world and received the attention of the
entire copper smelting industry.

the PSA plant established in 1989 to deploy downstream and
diversify business is
manufacturing sulphuric acid for semiconductors using the sulfurous

in the copper smelting process, and the Onsan Plant is the one and
only place in the
world that implements this process.
TECHNOLOGY We constructed the PSA Plant in 1989 to deploy
downstream and diversify business and have been
producing sulphuric acid for semiconductors using technology
introduced from Mitsubishi and IWAKI
Glass of Japan. Currently, the plant is manufacturing high purity
and high quality sulphuric acid
through the development of our own technology and process and
facility improvements, while also
continuously improving quality. High purity sulphuric acid is
supplied to distinguished semiconductor
companies in Korea, and annual production is 100,000 tons or
greater.
LS-Nikko Copper produces gold and silver, precious metals of a
99.99% purity, in the final
stage of the smelting process. The precious metal products produced
through repeated
refining and processing are used for jewelry and also industrial
materials. LS-Nikko
Copper has been expanding the commercialization of rare metals such
as selenium,
tellurium, and crude nickel sulphate.
TECHNOLOGY LS-Nikko Copper extracts a tiny amount of rare metals
contained in the copper ore and
commercializes them into products. Gold, silver, platinum,
palladium, and so on produced in the
final stage of the smelting process through repeated refining and
processing are used for jewelry,
materials for artwork, and industrial materials.
