The Summer Camp in China: TCCLS

In this summer, two students from TCCLS

attended the middle school students’

summer camp named Chinese bridge in the

mainland of China. This activity is

organized by HANBAN, and usually held in

summer time for about one month. During

the activity, students can access to Chinese

language classes, Chinese culture classes

(e.g. art of cutting paper, calligraphy, water

and ink painting, art of tea and martial art),

different kinds of interaction activities, (e.g.

big parties for Chinese and foreign students,

homestay with local families), and culture

experience activities, such as visiting Great

Wall. It is noted that all the activities are

free to the attendees. The intent of these

activities is to improve the communication

of foreign students with Chinese students

and to make them better understand Chinese

language and culture, thus promoting their

interests in learning Chinese language.

Most people might think that going to school on vacation is boring or is not fun.

However, on this trip, it was different than you would ever think. At first it seems like

nothing. Just desks sitting in a row with a teacher standing there waiting. It seems almost

worse than regular school, but once class starts, it’s fantastic. The teacher is super nice to

us and all the students are very nice

and we all become friends fast.

Class isn’t stressful it’s super

relaxed but we still learn plenty of

stuff. We got to sing a lot of songs

and practice out dialogue speaking

as well as learning the newer terms

people use in China now. All the

stuff we learned there was very

applicable to use during our stay in

China. In fact, when I was buying

stuff, I got to use what I learned by

saying ǗũÃãȾɣIt was a very

nice feeling to know that I got to

use something I learned just a few

days ago. This part of the trip was a

very satisfying part of the trip.

China is a wonderful place. Almost nothing could make it better. ALMOST. With

the whole group, it made the whole trip so much better. The whole time we would be

laughing and just be having a good time with each other. Everyone quickly became

friends with each other and by the end of it we were practically best friends. All our best

moments were with each other. We just made each other happy and we made the trip

even better. At the start I think we were all expecting an awkward, boring trip. But

because we all became friends the trip was beyond our dreams. Doing things by yourself

can be fun, but once you’re with friends, it becomes so much better. There’s no number

big enough to say how much better it gets. The memories I made there with my group

My Amazing Time in China

I attended the Chinese Bridge Summer Camp from July 17 to August 1 this year.First off, I would like to thank the people that made this trip possible for me (Hanban,Confucius Institute, and our very own Chinese School principal, Ms. Li Yihong). I had anamazing time in China. I had met some of the most wonderful and kindhearted people inChina and Changsha (the capitol city of Hunan Province located in the central part ofChina). Everyone treated me with kindness and patience when I was in China. I felt athome and comfortable in China because of these kind people.

The program started from when my parents and I left Richland on July 15 to go toSeattle. We got a hotel and stayed overnight in Seattle. The next day, when we got to theairport, I met the people from our Washington group (the group consisted of 39 people). We all got our boarding passes and then, it was time to say bye to our parents. We won’tbe seeing them for a whole two weeks. So after we got to our gate, we boarded the planeto San Francisco. Then we had about a two hour wait before the long flight to Beijing.

After we got on the plane, I realized that there was an in-flight entertainment system. Iwas thrilled!! I watched a whole bunch of movies on the plane. After the plane safelylanded in Beijing, we left the Beijing Airport and went to eat dinner. After dinner, wewent to our living quarters for the time we were in Beijing. We then went to bed. So thatconcluded my first day of this amazing trip. I’m going to be a lot more concise in the rest

of this just so you know. During our two days in Beijing, there was an opening ceremonyand the meeting of our tour guide, Charlie. He was a great and funny guy. He made thelong bus rides a whole lot more interesting with his hilarious stories of his travelingexperiences all over the world. But after two days in Beijing, we had to leave Charlie andBeijing for Changsha, where we spent the bulk of our time in China (we spent about tendays in Changsha).

In Changsha, we had so many things to do and learn. But the very first thing wedid was take a test to see which Chinese class we would be sorted into. I was sort ofsurprised that we still had to do work on our trip. But it turns out that it wasn’t all thatbad. Throughout our days in Changsha, we only had a total of about 6 hours of Chineseclass. It was a pretty simple Chinesecourse for me, even though it wasthe highest Chinese courseavailable. The other days, we justtoured the city, visited nationalmonuments, went to some veryinteresting museums, and shoppedat the stores around our hotel. I hada great time there and I alsomanaged to make some prettyawesome friends. Well, in no time,it was time to leave the amazing city of Changsha. We went to the airport in Changshaand flew back to Beijing to spend the final two days of our trip to china. The first day ofour last two days in China gave us a big shock. Charlie, our tour guide, was back to beour tour guide once more!!! This put a smile on all of our faces. So on that day, we wentto the Great Wall of China. There were three different paths up the great wall, all varyingin difficulty. I just picked a random one with my friends and, what do you know? Imanaged to pick the most difficult path, but too late now, there is no going back. So myfriends and I battled our way to the top. It was ridiculously hard to climb. When we got tothe top we could barely stand, our legs were shaking, chests pounding, and head sweatinglike crazy. Then we headed back down the great wall, now let me tell you, climbing backdown might seem easier than the climb up, but when your legs can barely hold you up?

17

Not so easy now. It was all I could do to not collapse and just lay there, unable to move. Then, after we got back to the hotel, we immediately went to our rooms and justcollapsed on the bed. We did nothing else that day, so we just went to bed super early. The next day was our last day in China. But we had one last treat prepared for us. Wewere going to the Pearl Market. That is a pretty prominent market in Beijing. There wereso many interesting things in the market that I would have taken you at least a full day tolook at all the stuff there. I bought a lot of nifty stuff for cheap prices. I bought a laserpointer, cause why not? I also bought both a pair of headphones and a pair of ear buds foran amazing price of 70 Yuan (this equals a little more than 11 dollars of USD). Thenwhen we were all done on our shopping extravaganza, we boarded the bus with our newgoods and went to the Beijing airport to go back to the states. Well I was pretty sad thatthis trip was finally over. Fifteenamazing days of my summer wasover. Man, I was dreading gettingback to the States, where I know Iwould have to say goodbye to allof my new found, amazing friends.I was filled with bittersweethappiness. So then we got on theplane and went back to the States. So this was the conclusion of mytrip to China.

Again, I would like to say how thankful I am to be able to have this opportunityto travel to China. I had the most amount of fun I had in a while there and learned awhole bunch about China and its culture. Without these people supporting me such as myparents, teachers such as Ms. Li and Jennifer, the people at Hanban, and the people fromthe Confucius Institute, none of this would have been possible. Thank you guys so muchfor this opportunity. I hope this opportunity is still available for future students of TCCLSand let them have a chance to experience the amazingness of this Chinese BridgeProgram that offers a once in a life time opportunity to go to China.

Tri- Cities Chinese Language School Summer School

The Tri-Cities Chinese Language School is coming to summer’s end. The two months period is used toconsolidate the children’s basic alphabet skills. The school’s goals are to generate enthusiasm for theChinese language, to support different learning methods for each student, to help them gain promotion to ahigher level for this coming year.

Summer school also emphasizes standard pronunciation with a focus on pinyin. Multiple projects throughoutthe summer offer hands-on learning through song, art projects, and creative homework. And in this mix oflearning activities, students individually use the creativity of their own minds.

The classroom, teachers and students, are full of activity, movement, and song. It is always exciting to see thechildren respond with much enthusiasm that spurs their learning on. Every teacher in the Tri-Cities LanguageSchool has his or her own unique and individualized teaching methods. We constantly strive for excellence.
