Definition

• Controversy is a state of prolonged public dispute or debate, usually concerning a matter of opinion. The word was coined from the Latin controversia, as a composite of controversus – "turned in an opposite direction," from contra – "against" – and vertere – to turn, or versus (see verse), hence, "to turn against."

Page 6: On the Controversies of the Origin & End of the Universe

Controversies

• If the universe came from nothing, then nothing exists AND everything does not exist.

• If the universe came from something, what is that something & from where did it come?

• How can we assume a “big crunch” when observational data reveals an expanding universe at an accelerating rate?

• Entropy: will the universe dissolve itself out of existence & return to its origins of nothing?

Page 7: On the Controversies of the Origin & End of the Universe

Challenge

• Superstition & politics hinges on faith and assumptions to accept controversies as “givens”

• Ex. There will always be traffic accidents because of human flaws which justifies outcomes (FATE)

• Science & mathematics hinges on laws that are consistent regardless or changes in “assumptions”

• Ex. Traffic laws accommodate human flaw & prevent accidents & achieve results (PURPOSE)

Catastrophe & Chaos

• Bifurcation occurs when a small smooth change made to the parameter values (the bifurcation parameters) of a system causes a sudden 'qualitative' or topological change in its behaviour

Within & Between Systems

• Local bifurcations, which can be analysed entirely through changes in the local stability properties of equilibria, periodic orbits or other invariant sets as parameters cross through critical thresholds; and

• Global bifurcations, which often occur when larger invariant sets of the system 'collide' with each other, or with equilibria of the system. They cannot be detected purely by a stability analysis of the equilibria (fixed points).

Information Theory of Energy?

Universes we compute for are real; first “in our head” then when applied in our “external reality”

At this point, physical science has a lot in common with the social sciences

Telling the Story

• Getting stuck with the map of myth & legend• The story of a possibility out of infinity• Studying history to chart the future• Caveat: Dr. Frankenstein Syndrome
