1 Following an operation in 1999 for Glaucoma, he

was exempted by the FIFA to use Diamox (containing Acetazolamide) along with the accessory that we have come to associate him with. This accessory has prompted a variety of reaction from rival players, with Jaap Stam once saying, : “Come on, we’re playing football, you haven’t got time to go skiing”.

The one exception was in 1962, when '61 champ Z took his X back home to South Africa, much to the annoyance of the chairman Clifford Roberts. “Next thing you know there was a call from Mr. Roberts“, Z later recalled. "[He said] Have you got the X?' I said, 'Yes, I do.' He said, 'Well, no one ever takes the X away from here.' And I said, 'Well, Mr. Roberts, if you want it, why don't you come and fetch it?'“

John Lever

The Vaseline Incident, one of the first high-profile ‘manipulation’ acts of the cricket ball by a bowler

During the Chennai Test in 1976-77, the English physio put Vaseline-impregnated gauze into the eyebrows of the bowlers . This would channel the sweat down the side of the eye, as opposed to allowing it to go into the eyes. John Lever had a habit of taking sweat and in the process he mixed the Vaseline-impregnated gauze with some of the sweat on his brow. He found himself with a slippery hand and hence decided to get rid of the gauze. He took it off his eyes and put it down at the base of the stumps in front of the umpire. This was picked up by the umpire, who recognised that it was a foreign substance which is not allowed as per cricketing laws.

1 On the 29th of Nov 2009, The Independent carried

a story with the headline - ______, Woods, Federer: The curse of Gillette. This was a nod in the direction of the infamous curse associated with the brand wherein sports stars related to the brand got into trouble. In Nov 2009, Tiger Woods crashed his car following an argument with his wife and Roger Federer was knocked out of the ATP World Tour semi-finals by 6th seeded Nikolay Davydenko.

Who/What was the third (and probably the most infamous) person/incident that the completes the headline?

4 “From a tactical point of view I think we can see

that number 6, Franky Vercauteren, is looking to track back and support his full back. From his position he’s trying to steer __________ down the line and prevent him from coming aside and hurting them. It is also possible to justify the position of the the follicly supreme number 10 Ludo Coeck, who is cutting off a route inside for _________. After that it is quite clear that tactics, formation and indeed common sense have gone out the window, they’ve all been replaced with the blind fear that only the great players can inspire in an opposition team”

The Europe team took The Concorde from London to Boston and featured a makeshift putting green. Olazabal’s sent in a 150 foot putt that travelled the length of the cabin in 26.17 seconds to land in the cup at the first attempt. With Concorde traveling at 1,270 mph, the ball was actually in motion for 9.232 miles.

6 “This was in the first innings of the final Test at the

Brabourne Stadium in 1973. I had spent most of the day fielding at silly point. As you know, Vishy, like his brother-in-law Sunny, is very short, and even bent in half I would find myself staring right into their eyes! Apart from being a really good player, Vishy is also a very nice man. When he reached his hundred, my actions were totally spontaneous. I < blanked out > . The Brabourne Stadium absolutely erupted - they loved it. It was this sort of involvement that they looked for, since cricket had long been perceived as too prim and proper. Wherever I go in India I am reminded of what happened on that day in Bombay. It is an extra-special memory I have of a special cricketer and a wonderful ground in a great city”.

10 At the 1998 Canadian Open, during an interview,

Monica Seles was asked if she could speak French. Seles said she had been trying to but hadn't found the time. The interviewer then suggested that maybe Monica should find herself a nice, French boyfriend to teach her. Seles smiled and replied, “Yeah, like X”. This was a reference to the French Open final where X famously gave his victory speech in French – “Excusez-moi, je parle francais comme une vache espagnole” (which means “I'm sorry, I speak french like a spanish cow”).

13 “________ - who loved the game of billiards and

was an exceptional aficionado of the game while playing it with little skill - enjoyed composing on the table as well, rolling balls in geometric patterns across it while working. To observers it might have seemed as though he was interested in the patterns themselves; it delightfully turns out that what he was really looking at were the changing reflections in the surface of the balls”.

beating the Vancouver Canucks in game seven of the Finals. This resulted large scale violence and riots in Vancouver, with CBC News reporting damages exceeding $4 million which was worse than the riot that followed the Canucks loss in Game 7 of the 1994 Stanley Cup Finals. 2 Canucks fans, Scott Jones and Alex Thomas, who were returning after the game got caught up in the riots and this became probably the most memorable aspect of an otherwise sad day in the office for the Canucks.
