The Vaseline Incident, one of the first high-profile ‘manipulation’ acts of the cricket ball by a bowler

During the Chennai Test in 1976-77, the English physio put Vaseline-impregnated gauze into the eyebrows of the bowlers . This would channel the sweat down the side of the eye, as opposed to allowing it to go into the eyes. John Lever had a habit of taking sweat and in the process he mixed the Vaseline-impregnated gauze with some of the sweat on his brow. He found himself with a slippery hand and hence decided to get rid of the gauze. He took it off his eyes and put it down at the base of the stumps in front of the umpire. This was picked up by the umpire, who recognised that it was a foreign substance which is not allowed as per cricketing laws.

putt ever made (ball was in motion for 9.232 miles) is held by Jose Maria Olazabal and was made on the eve of the first day of 1999 Ryder Cup.

How was this record achieved?


The Europe team took The Concorde from London to Boston and featured a makeshift putting green. Olazabal’s sent in a 150 foot putt that travelled the length of the cabin in 26.17 seconds to land in the cup at the first attempt. With Concorde traveling at 1,270 mph, the ball was actually in motion for 9.232 miles.

This resulted large scale violence and riots in Vancouver, with CBC News reporting damages exceeding $4 million which was worse than the riot that followed the Canucks loss in Game 7 of the 1994 Stanley Cup Finals. 2 Canucks fans, Scott Jones and Alex Thomas, who were returning after the game got caught up in the riots and this became probably the most memorable aspect of an otherwise sad day in the office for the Canucks.
