kern van haar vriendekring.

Die een wat almal bymekaar gebring het,

maar Saterdagmiddag is sy deur die dood

weggeskeur van hulle wat haar so liefgehad

het en met wie sy nog die dag saam kon lag

en fotos neem.

Die 22-jarige Samantha McCauley het

Saterdagmiddag in n gru-motorongeluk op

die Parys/Potchefstroom-pad gesterf en van

haar vriende is ernstig beseer n die kop-

aan-kop botsing wat ook die lewe van nog

n man (die bestuurder van die ander voer-

tuig) ge-eis het. Sy identiteit kon teenMaan-

dag nog nie deur die polisie bevestig word

nie. (Lees die berig op bl. 3)

Dit is nie net die hangbrug wat die teiken van

vandale geword het nie. Nou is dit die parkie

in Cilliersstraat waar vandale hul bestuurs-

vernuf op die parkie se gras kom wys met hul

donuts.

Die parkieword instand gehoumet bydraes

uit die gemeenskap. S het die gemeenskap

om die parkie pas R4 500 spandeer juis om

vandale uit die parkie te hou.

Die afgelope naweek is die 100 mm dik

paaltjies wat geplant is eenvoudig afgery.

Inwoners van Parys ken die Cilliersstraat-

parkiewaar ouers en kinders daagliks die prag

parkie geniet en moeite gedoen word om die

park skoon en netjies te hou vir kinders om

in te speel.

n Klag vir die beskadiging van eiendom

is nou by die polisie gel en n beloning is

ook uitgereik vir inligting wat sal lei tot die

suksesvolle vervolging van die skuldige/s.

Mense wat inligting het of ooggetuie sou

wees van hierdie vandalisme, word dringend

gevra om 083 388 7633 te skakel.

* By die Primre Skool HF Verwoerd het

n dief Saterdagmiddag die skool se yster

naamletterwerk by die skoolembleem by die

ingang weggedra en selfs die boompies wat

op die skool se sportgronde geplant is en vir

die skool geskenk was, is met die uitsonde-

ring van een van die bome, uitgehaal en weg-

gedra.

Nou is parkie vandale se teiken

Die skadewat vandale die afgelopenaweek

in die Cilliersstraatparkie aangerig het, is

hier duidelik te sien.

Vroer is die gras ook beskadig en is juis besluit om voorsorg te tref om vandale van

die parkie se gras af weg te hou.

Die NG gemeente Vredefort hou Vrydag,

2 Augustus weer sy jaarlikse koorfees en

kermis. Erna Rademan is die gasvrou en or-

ganiseerder van die koorfees wat om 11:00

die oggend begin.

Tussen die koorsang sal daar geleentheid

wees om Afrikaanse volksliedjies saam te

sing.

Toegang na die koorfees in die kerk is

R10 per persoon. Deelnemende kore kom

van Parys, Kroonstad, Hennenman, Pot-

chefstroom en Sasolburg. Kore is aan die

uitsterf by skole.

Samantha McCauley, wat die naweek in n

gru-kop-aan-kop botsing op die Parys/Pot-

chefstroompad op die draai net duskant die

saam met haar broer Richard (19), haar beste

vriendin Roxanne Goodchild, en nog n

vriend, David van Spuy, in Samantha se Opel

Corsa van Parys na Potchefstroom onderweg

toe die ongeluk gebeur het. Samanthawat ook

die motor bestuur het, se horlosie het volgens

haar pa, Bertie, op 16:05 gaan staan.

Agter die Corsa was nog vier van hul vrien-

de wat saammet hulle die dag in Parys gekui-

er het. Die tweeling, Melody en Antoinette

Rawlings, Roxanne se sussie Caylin, en Esti-

ne Lategan, al vier studente aan die Noordwes

Universiteit se Potchefstroom-kampus het die

ongeluk sien gebeur waarin hul boesemvrien-

din gesterf het.

Kort na die ongeluk is op die geselsgroep

WUK (Wreld Uitreik Konferensie) deur een

van die vier meisies wat agter Sammy-hulle

gery het, gevra vir gebed vir Sammy en die

ander drie insittendes van die Corsa.

Dit is ook hier waar Werner, nog n vriend

van die groep na wie hulle oppad was om sy

optrede by die Uurglas in Potcheftroom te

gaan kyk, die skokkende boodskap van die

ongeluk gelees het. Hulle sou vir hom klere

gevat het vir die vertoning. Werner het kort

tevore nog met hulle kontak gehad toe hulle

ges het dat hulle uit Parys vertrek en sal bel

sodra hulle in Potchefstroom is.

Sammy se broer Richard het snywonde in

die ongeluk opgedoen. Hy studeer aan CTU

in Boksburg.

Roxanne was teen Maandag steeds kritiek

in die Millpark-hospitaal in Johannesburg

waar n tweede operasie op haar gedoen sou

word. Sy het verskeie ernstige beserings.

Roxanne is n honneurs-student in Sielkunde

aan die Noordwes-Universiteit se Potchef-

stroom-kampus. David van der Spuy is in

die Potchefstroom Mediclinic opgeneem en

sou ook Maandag geopereer word, is ver-

neem. Hy is n ingenieurswese student.

Sammy het by House &Home in Edenvale

gewerk. Sy het vroer ook aan die Noordwes-

Universiteit se Potchefstroom-kampus stu-

deer en in Springs gematrikuleer aan die Jo-

han Jurgens Skool.

Sy is deur haar ouers en vriende beskryf

as iemand wat altyd die Here spontaan gedien

en vir Hom geleef het, iemand wat maklik

vriende gemaak het, en die kern van haar

vriendskapkring was. Waar Sammy was, het

sy mense laat lag en mense bymekaar ge-

bring.

Kort voor haar dood het sy en haar vriende

nog by Plum Tree geet en in Parys fotos

geneem. Fotos was een van haar groot liefdes

maar hierdie laaste fotos van Sammy en haar

vriende het spoorloos verdwyn met Sammy

se Samsung Galaxy S4-foon wat n die onge-

luk nog nie gevind is nie. Die hoop is dat hier-

die laaste kosbare fotos op Sammy se foon

sal wees en pleit haar ouers dat mense wat

moontlik hierdie foon aan hulle kan terugbe-

sorg, haar pa Bertie sal skakel by 072 216

0739. Haar beursie kon ook nie gekry word

nie.

Sammy sal Vrydag om 11:00 vanuit die

AGS Lofoord-gemeente in Springs begrawe

Maalvleisbrood

Maal 1 ui, 450 g

gaar, maer varkvleis

en 125 g gekookte

ham (of sny dit baie

fyn); voeg by 1 blok-

kie hoenderekstrak,

opgelos in 250 ml

warm water. Sif

saam 350 g meel-

blom en bietjie sout.

Kook 140 ml water

tesame met 125 g margarien/botter en voeg

al die meel by sodra dit kook. Klop die meng-

sel totdat dit n deeg vorm wat nie kleef nie.

Knie twee-derdes van die deeg n rukkie en

voer n gesmeerde broodpannetjie daarmee

uit (die oorblywende deeg moet nie koud

word nie). Skep die helfte van die vleismeng-

sel daarin; plaas 4 gekookte eiers in n ry in

die middel en skep die res van die mengsel

om die eiers. Die deeg wat oorgebly het, word

nou bo-oor geplaas. Druk die rand goed vas

aan die rand van die deegvoering, borsel met

geklitste eier en

bak vir sowat n

uur teen 180

C. Bedien met

Braai n groot, gekerfde ui en 100 g sam-

pioene (in kwarte gesny) stadig in bietjie mar-

garien. Sny 450 g lam/skaapvleis in klein

blokkies; voeg by die sam-

pioene en stowe vir 10 minu-

te. Voeg by: 250 ml vleisaf-

treksel, geurmiddels en

kruie; plaas die deksel op en

laat gaar stowe.

Skep die mengsel in n

oondskottel; bedek met 125

g gerolde skilferkorsdeeg;

maak die rand van die oond-

skottel nat met water om die

deeg te laat vasklou. Sny die

rand al langs die skottel net-

jies af en kerf oorkruis met n stomp mes oor

die deeg en om die rand.

Borsel met geklitste eier

en bak vir 30 minute

teen 200 C; verlaag

temperatuur na 175 C

en bak vir nog 15 minu-

te tot gaar en bruin.

Wraps met salm

Vir die beste resulta-

te, verhit eers 8 wraps

(koop by die super-

mark) volgens die in-

struksies op die pak-

kie.

Vulsel: Meng saam: 200 g gebraaide aar-

tappelwiggies (met die skil), 1 komkommer,

gesny in skyfies (met of sonder die pitte),

vars of gedroogde kruie en 1 2 blikkies

salm. Geur na smaak, plaas op wraps, rol

op en bedien met crme frache verdun met

bietjie melk/room en gegeur na smaak. Hier-

di is n wenner. ....

Our middle-aged readers will most defini-

tely have this recipe in their books or in their

minds, but we have had younger readers re-

questing these old timers ....

Preheat oven to 200 C and spray an oven-

proof dish with Spray and Cook.

Cook 2 finely sliced onions in butter un-

til brown. Sprinkle with 30 g flour and 3

ml dry mustard and gradually add 375 ml

chicken stock and stir until smooth; bring

to the boil, reduce the heat and simmer for

a few minutes. Stir in: 750 g lean, cooked

lamb (finely minced with a sharp knife),

12,5 ml each chopped fresh mint and par-

sley, 25 ml Worcestershire sauce and salt

and black pepper. Spoon mixture into dish

and top with a potato topping.

Potato topping: Mash 4 large, cooked

potatoes and add 60 ml hot milk and 30

g butter and seasoning.Mash until creamy,

adding more milk if necessary. Pipe or spread

over meat and bake 40 45 minutes until gol-

den.

Vegetable strudel

Preheat oven to 200 C and brush an oven

tray with oil.Brush 1 sheet of phyllo pastry

with oil; top with a second sheet and repeat

Find doctor in Parys

Three males were arrested on Friday morning

on the R59 near the entrance of the Parys Air-

field for a housebreaking incident in Presi-

dent Brand Street.

The arrest by members of the Parys Police

assisted by traffic officials and security com-

pany personnel followed after a tip-off from

a member of public. The men had to appear

in court on Monday morning. A laptop and

TV, allegedly stolen during the housebrea-

king,was recovered by the police. According

to Col Rapitsi, station commander for the Pa-

rys Police Station, housebreaking at private

residences as well as businesses has decrea-

sed significantly, though vehicle theft is still

a problem. For the past month till the 22nd

of July two incidents have been reported and

one man has been arrested in Gauteng with

regard to the reported incidents.

Rapitsi motivated the public to report all

suspicious movement or suspicious vehicles

as this can result to successes such as the ar-

rest on Friday. The public can phone the poli-

ce station on 056 816 2516.

Three arrested for housebreaking

Twaalf musici ontmoet opVrydag 2Augus-

tus by die Koepel Kunstesentrum op Deel-

fontein vir n naweek van musiekmaak in

die stilte en rustigheid van die natuur.

Tydens hierdie kamermusiekkursus

word onder meer die Petite Symphonie van

Charles Gounod en die blaserserenade van

Anton Dvoak ingestudeer en by die afslui-

tingskonsert om 12:00 op Sondag 4 Augus-

tus uitgevoer.

Die werke is hoofsaaklik vir blasers ge-

komponeer vir hobos, klarinette, Franse

horings, fagotte, en dwarsfluit, met bas-on-

dersteuning deur n tjello en kontrabas.

Meeste van die musici het reeds herhaal-

delik in die Koepel aan uitvoerings deelge-

neem. Besoekers aan die Bewarea se Kuns,

Kos en Kultuurdag aan die einde van 2012,

sal byvoorbeeld die uitvoering van Mozart

se blaserserenades vir blaasoktet onthou

wat luister aan die geleentheid verleen het.

Kamermusiekwerke soos hierdie kom baie

selde tot uitvoering weens die ongewone

besettings en die gepaardgaande moeite om

die regte musici vir die geleentheid te vind.

In die volgende maande word twee mu-

siekprojekte deur die Koepel Kunstesen-

trum aangebied. By die eerste lei die Duitse

tenoor en dirigent Florian Cramer n uit-

voering vanwerke vanHeinrich Schtz, ge-

sing deur n kamerkoor van sestien Suid-

Afrikaanse sangers.

Die tweede is die tradisionele Barokpro-

jek tydens die Aardklopweek, gelei deur

Antoinette Lohmann, bekende barokviolis-

te uit Amsterdam.

Die afsluitingskonserte vind in beide ge-

valle nie op Deelfontein plaas nie, maar in

Johannesburg, Pretoria, Potchefstroom

(Aardklop), en in die Kaap. Meer inligting

sal op die internet bekendgemaak word.

Soos altyd by die Koepel Klassiek-kon-

serte, is luisteraars welkom om hulle piek-

niekmandjies saam te bring en na die kon-

sert saam met die musici middagete te ge-

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is when the median

nerve (an important nerve running from the

forearm into the palm of the hand) is pressed

or squeezed in the wrist. Carpal Tunnel re-

fers to a tunnel formed between the wrist bo-

nes (carpal bones) and a ligament crossing

them. With the median nerve there are also

tendons passing through the tunnel.

Inflammation of the tendons or other swel-

ling can cause narrowing of the tunnel and

compression of the tunnel.

Who is at risk for developing carpal tun-

nel syndrome?

Women are three times more at risk to de-

velop carpal tunnel syndrome than men. Peo-

ple with diabetes or other metabolic syndro-

mes that affect the bodys nerves are also at

high risk. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is more

common in a person who does assembly line

work. Repetitive and forceful flexion and ex-

tension of the wrist increases the risk and as-

sembly line work often includes tasks that re-

quire this.

What are the symptoms?

The median nerve extends impulses to the

palm of the hand to the side of the thumb,

the skin over the thumb, index, middle and

part of the ring finger. Feelings of numbness,

pain and tingling are common in these fin-

gers. These symptoms often first appear at

night because many people sleep with their

wrists bent. These feelings may wake the per-

son up and he will feel the need to shake

the hands to relieve the feeling. Worsening

of symptoms will lead to uncomfortable fee-

lings during the day, loss of grip strength and

struggling to grasp small objects. If it is left

untreated it can lead to the muscles at the base

of the thumb wasting away.

Can Carpal Tunnel Syndrome be trea-

ted without surgery?

Yes, but early diagnosis and treatment is

important to avoid permanent damage to the

median

nerve. Initially

treatment involves

resting the affected

hand and avoiding activities that worsen

symptoms.A splint that immobilizes thewrist

is often helpful to relieve pressure from the

carpal tunnel as well as preventing move-

ments that will worsen symptoms. Your occu-

pational therapist or phy-

siotherapist will prescribe

exercises to relieve symp-

toms as well as help with

swelling, pain and streng-

then muscles that may ha-

ve weakened. Certain me-

dication can also be pres-

cribed by your doctor.

When will surgery be

recommended?

As a general rule surge-

rywill be recommended if

symptoms persist for lon-

ger than six months.

After surgery, occupat-

ional therapy or physio-

therapy is often needed to

Dit is iets wat die inwoners nie ken nie en het dit bygedra om van

Na die feesmaal is weggel aan die pragtig versierde verjaardag-

koek vir mnr. Nelson Mandela se 95ste verjaardag.

Baie dankie aan al die personeel van Shoprite wat hierdie uitreik

moontlik gemaak het.

Maar dit het nie hier geindig nie. Later die dag was die inwoners

ook bederf deur die personeel van Choppies Parys wat n groot ver-

jaardagkoek vir die sentrum se inwoners gebring het.

ders by Vrystaat Versorging in Aksie (VVA) se

Huis Lerato in Tumahole. Ter viering van Madi

badag is hand bygesit om die buitemure van

die huis waar hierdie kinders bly te verf, mid

dagete vir hulle te bedien en speletjies saam

met die kinders te speel. Huis Lerato sien om

na kinderswie se ouers nie na hulle kan omsien

nieweensomstandighede.Daar is tans ses kin

ders wat hier gehuisves word. Huis Lerato kry

geen steun van die staat nie enword daar staat

gemaak op ondersteuning uit die gemeenskap.

trokke wil raak by die projek is baie welkom om

Personnel of the Parys Magistrate Court celebrated Madiba

Day last week Thursday with a special 67 minutes prayer ini

tiative. They prayed for peace and good health of former Pre

sident Nelson Mandela, and for the peace and good health

of all Parysenaars. Thereafter they handed out some soup.

All personnel contributed towards this initiative as well as

members of the Sheriffs office.


Let them eat cake, says Tobi Weber from Let them eat cake. This Madiba Day

(18 July) they decorated their company car with balloons and posters and went

around townhanding out cupcakes to prettymuch everyone. Andwhat a rewarding

experience! The cupcake drive was part of a larger initiative that started a few

months ago when they took cupcakes to children in the Tumahole township on

their birthdays. Giving back to the community has always been an important part

of their business says Tobi.

Hierdie pragtige ponchos is deur n weldoener met die hulp van dames van die Vredefort

Sewing Centre gemaak wat hul etenstye opgeoffer het om die stikwerk gratis te doen.

Die ponchos is Donderdag as deel van die 67 minute Madibadag uitreikgeleentheid ver

sprei na waar daar nood is. Op die foto is Manana Mafuma, Marys Ntsoeleng, Mankgi

Mogoera en Marian Motubane van die Vredefort Sewing Centre.

Klere, kos en komberse is ook in Schonkenville uitgedeel vir bejaardes en weeskinders.

Verskeie mense het bydraes gelewer tot die projek waaronder Doreen van der Merwe,

Coen de Jager, Epilepsie SuidAfrika en De Pontes. Die uitreik was egter nie net verlede

week nie, maar word gereeld hier gedoen saam met Granny Kamfer.

Birds exploit almost every available food

source on the planet.

Whatever food source exits, some species

of bird will eat it. Their food will vary from

hard seeds to succulent plants, rich nectar to

soft wax, all sizes of insects to microscopic

plankton and scaled fish to rotten carrion.

Birds are equipped with highly specialized

and often ingenious feeding techniques that

allow them to peck, probe, dig, scratch, chisel

or dive for their preferred food.

In order to feed their chicks, some birds

have internal storage bags (crops), allowing

them to carry food back to their nests for their

hungry young. Other birds such as oxpeckers,

honeyguides and cattle egrets have relation-

ships with other animals in order to maximize

their food-gathering opportunities.

The external appearance of a bird and its

diet usually go hand in hand. Its looks are de-

termined largely by what it puts in its sto-

mach. The tools needed for finding food or

catching prey can be seen in the shape of its

beak, the length of it legs, the position of its

eyes, the strength of its feet(claws), the shape

of its wings and tail and the length of its neck.

The diversity in food and feeding methods al-

lows a variety of species to live together in

the same habitat, with limited competition for

the same sources.

Eating and Drinking:

As a result of their lack of teeth, birds feed

rather differently from mammals. The food

is not chewed at all, but transferred to the giz-

zard where it is ground up. Many birds even

swallow their prey whole. This may involve

the swallowing of lizards, snakes, large in-

sects or fish that are large in relation to the

size of the bird.

The majority of birds, however, take smal-

ler prey than this. Finches, warblers, doves

and thrushes for example, take prey that is

sufficiently small enough for them to swallow

easily.

Others such as gulls andmany birds of prey

tare up larger preywith their beaks. Yet others

like ducks and game birds eat plant material.

Birds do not usually prepare their food, but

there are exceptions. Bee-eaters and some

other insect- eaters may remove stings and

biting mouthparts of insects before they swal-

low them.

This prevents the possibility of the insect

biting the bird after it has been swallowed.

Feeding is a dangerous occupation since the

feeding bird while concentrating on it, runs

the risk of being preyed upon itself. Sea birds

feeding on the surface at sea may become

prey of large fish themselves.

Drinking is often dangerous too.Many spe-

cies come down to water holes in large flocks,

to drink and by doing so, expose themselves

to predators. This is especially true in drier

areas where birds congregate in large num-

bers at available water holes. The birds of

prey know only too well where these are. Ma-

ny small birds satisfy their needs from the

dew or rain by merely sipping drops off the

vegetation.

Others such as the swallows and swifts col-

lect water by accurate dives across the surface

of lakes and rivers. Most birds, however, use

the same method as a domestic hen to drink

water. The pigeons and sand grouse, for

example, are able to drink by dipping the beak

into the water and sucking it up with a pum-

ping action.

In general we can divide birds in groups

according to what they eat and call them:

Seed Eaters:

Among the seed eating birds count the fin-

ches, sparrows, weavers, waxbills and doves

and pigeons. Most of the seed eating birds

may also eat insects and some of them raise

their young on insects as well as seeds.

Fruit eaters:

The main diet of these birds consists of a

large variety of fruit from very small berries

to quite large fruits like apples. They also ha-

ve a variety of ways eating their favourite

fruit. The true fruit eating birds normally have

wide, strong bills enabling them to swallow

fruits whole or to chew of chunks from larger

fruits. This groupmay include species like the

barbets, turacos and some pigeons. Because

in certain areas, fruit is not available the who-

le year round, many species have other diets

other times of the year.

Insect eaters:

A wide variety of birds eat insects. Many

insectivorous species, however, turn to other

diets at other times of the year when insects

are scares. True insectivores that take insects

all year round may be divided into two types

those with stubby bills and large gapes and

those with long pointed bills. Among these

are the swallows, swifts, nightjars, flycat-

chers, bee-eaters and warblers.

Fish eaters:

The different species in this group hunt

their prey in a wide variety of ways. In this

group we find birds like penguins, pelicans,

herons, kingfishers and cormorants. Then we

also find birds like fish eagles and fishing

owls that prefer the same diet.

Birds of prey:

This group of meat-eating birds includes

species like eagles, falcons, kestrels and owls.

They have similarities in the shapes of their

bills and talons, both of which perform the

function of grasping their prey and tearing it

up to eat. These birds take a wide variety of

prey and others like the vultures only eat car-

rion.

Omnivores:

There are birds that take a wide variety of

foods at all times of the year, the jacks-of-all

trades.

They may belong to anyone or all of the

abovementioned groups. This group may in-

clude species like starlings, seagulls, crows

and sparrows.

Many of us like to have wild birds in our

gardens and there are a number of ways to

attract them.

One way is to supply food and water for

them at strategic places in the garden. In order

for us to supply them with the right food, we

need to do a little research and find out what

wild birds eat.

We have to be careful not to spoil them and

keep them from finding their own natural

food in the wild. Many birds will eat any kind

of food which may be detrimental to their

health and very survival.
