July Fourth is a great occasionin our country and a day to cel-ebrate with patriotism.John Adams, the first vice

president and second presidentof the United States, helped writethe Declaration of Independence. He said, “I am apt to believethat it will be celebrated by suc-ceeding generations as the greatanniversary festival. It ought tobe solemnized with pomp andparade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires andilluminations from one end of thiscontinent to the other.”Independence Day remains

a national celebration just asPresident Adams predicted. Weencourage you to celebrate inthe spirit of independence andpatriotism that has endured for239 years. As Army professionalswho protect our freedom, wemust

remain aware of the risks presentat July 4 festivities.Outdoor activities are a source

of sunburn and heat injuries.Drink plenty of water and takefrequent breaks when workingor playing in hot weather. Wateractivities are also popular duringthe July Fourth weekend. Wearlife jackets while boating, swimonly in supervised areas and obeyposted signs.Pay attention to weather con-

ditions and get out of the waterat the first sign of bad weather.Alcohol doesn’t mix with

boating, swimming or driving.Watch your consumption anddon’t drink if you will operate anytype of vehicle. Give a responsibleperson details on where you willbe and how long you will be gonefor added safety.Enjoy Independence Day as

you celebrate with family andfriends. Please be safe becauseour nation needs each one ofus to support and defend thisgreat country.Once a Soldier, always a

Prevent West Nile VirusJBM-HH officials will be testing

for possible West Nile Virus-positivepools of mosquitos throughout thejoint base in an effort to determine ifthe virus is present locally. Officialshave also asked that everyone helpprevent potential contraction of thisvirus through prevention by elimi-nating potential breeding areas formosquitos around work areas andhomes. This means emptying areas

that can collect water, such as birdbaths or other objects that collectrain water. Additionally, the useof insect repellent containing thesmallest percentage of DEET alsohelps deter mosquito bites. Lookfor more details on testing datesand prevention methods in nextweek’s Pentagram.
