Afternoon All, so I’m sat here writing this Wednesday evening,

whilst it’s hammering it down outside, praying it will stop and that we’ll have a game today. Not playing since Boxing Day isn’t ideal, weather has been awful and caused us to have the Weymouth and Stratford games called off. Our pitch was under water when we trained on it last week so if the game is on the groundsman has done wonders. The lads are raring to go today more than ever, we’re all chomping at the bit to play. We’ve had some tough training sessions and have all kept in check and should all be sharp still (minus possibly me and Walks, it’s hard to be sharp when you’re 14st plus).

It’s vital we get back to winning ways today and get another three points on the board, teams are creeping up behind us in the table and we want to keep distance be-tween them. We owe Kings

Lynn, after they beat us at their place earlier in the season. Get behind the boys, this is a huge part of our season and we need every bit of help and support we can get if we want this season to be a success.

BOARDROOM NOTESChris ReevesVice Chairman

Surely we will have a game this afternoon!! The last two sets of notes I have put together haven’t been read by anyone as

both the Hitchin game on the Tuesday before Christmas and then so frustratingly the Weymouth fixture on 2nd January fell foul of the torrential rain that we have all had to endure of late. The drain-age works that were undertaken in the Summer have in fairness done us proud up until the last few weeks. The pitch drains better now than it has done for years but compounded by the high tide it just couldn’t cope with what the heavens threw at it on New Years day and on into the Saturday morning. The whole pitch was under water and quite frankly was the worst I had ever seen it!

The frustrations of the postponement went far beyond the obvious denied opportunity of ninety minutes entertainment and hopefully another three points. The loss of a massive injection of cash from the game was a huge blow to our cash-flow and financial planning. That loss compounded of course by the fact that not only did we not get any money from the game but we were also left with bills to pay-for the programme of course that had all been prepared and printed, for the toilets that had been hired in to cater for the needs of the expectedcontingent of Weymouth fans that were to be housed in the Fleetsbridge end of the ground, not to mention the food and beer that had been bought,in anticipation of a bumper crowd some of which inevitably went to waste. Not a good start to the year!! Rant over!

This afternoon we are (hopefully!)extending a warm Tatnam welcome to our friends from kings Lynn Football Club in the shape of their players officials and supporters. It is a huge distance to travel and when we played the away game we did in fact travel up on the Friday before the game.I trust that our opponents had a reasonable journey here and that they return home safely.

Kings Lynn are a side that command great respect .They are well supported and have an excellent non-league pedigree. They inflicted a 3-2 defeat on us in that game back in September and we will need to be at our very best to secure the points today.I have no doubt that we are in for an excellent game of football.

Last weeks postponement of the trip to Stratford meant that there was a good chance to run our eye over Hitchin who were playing away

at Weymouth.Hitchin are in a good run of form and are clearly going to be one of our main challengers for the title. They won the game as most of you will know by 2-0 in quite appalling conditions.Fierce wind and driving rain were the order of the day and good football was obviously not easy.Full credit to Hitchin though they certainly produced a thoroughly disciplined competent performance and thoroughly de-served the win.Weymouth were bewilderingly off the pace and will not look back on the afternoon with any satisfaction particularly knowing that Tom,Callum and a good clutch of our first team squad were all sat in the Stand!!

No midweek game this week so the next outing for the lads is another long trip to Merthyr next Saturday.Still some places on the coach if you fancy a day out in Wales so do contact Bill Reid to book your seat.

You may notice today a new face selling the 50:50 tickets-after many years raising much needed funds for the Club by selling these tickets on match days Pete Blundell has finally hung up his money bag and he does so with huge thanks for all his efforts-the number of times he sold that “last remaining ticket”is legendary! His long stand-ing equally hard working colleague Geoff is now going to ply his trade with a new partner Pete Lewis who has so kindly stepped forward and offered his services to replace Pete. Our thanks go to him and as the old saying gores “The king is dead-long live the king”!!

Hopefully the recent bout of inactivity will, have given Richard Gillespie and Jamie Gleeson more time to recover from their injuries that have so blighted their season-both are so frustrated and desperate to be back in the thick of things and all being well that might even be today.

Finally my usual exhortation to enjoy the game and not to forget to buy those 50:50 tickets

LAST TIME OUT

Poole remain 12 points clear at the summit, but slumped to their second

successive draw in two games, as relegation threatened Frome Town managed to battle to a 0-0 draw.

Most will look at the scoreline and presume the game was a dull affair – but there were a catalogue of chances in both halves, the majority falling to Poole.

The visitors would go close around the ten minute mark, as Marvin Brooks’ shot rattled the crossbar, before Lee Wort saw his shot well saved by Darren Chitty in the Frome goal.

Poole would continue piling on the pressure – and their next best chance came as a ball

was scooped over the Frome backline, allowing Lindsay to fire a shot off – the rebound falling to Wort, who spurred his opportunity by tapping wide of the goal.

After the break and Frome became more confident on the ball – and quickly looked to keep it, their grasp of the game growing larger. However, Poole would still have the better chances – including hitting the post twice. Both near-miss-es came amongst a flurry of chances, which Poole just couldn’t seem to convert.

The best chance was prob-ably when substitute Richard Gillespie countered – beating his man to the ball, before firing it past Chitty – only for it to

LAST TIME OUTbounce off the post and into the goalkeeper. Frome hung on, but the point was not enough to lift them out of the relegation zone.

For the second week in the row, Poole’s promotion rivals have failed to capitalise on the leaders dropping points – no team in the top 8 won.

After the game, Killick stated that it was “impossible” to play “proper football” due to the conditions.

“Both sides sort of struggled to [have] any real fluency. It was always going to be a phys-ical war, then there was very few chances – [it was a ques-tion] of who takes one.”

“I felt that’s where we were a bit unfortunate – we’ve hit the post twice, we’ve hit the bar – we had the clearer opportu-nities. I thought Frome played well, and we didn’t have it all our own way by all means. I just feel when you look at the balance of play, and the chanc-es we created, we probably deserved to win. But when the conditions are like this, it is diffi-cult to create things.”

“We had times in the second half where we were in quite good positions to cross the

ball – you cross the ball, it takes a bobble and it ends up in the stands. I think you’ve got to put the result in the proper context, and when you look at the condi-tions it wasn’t too bad.”

Poole’s first game of the New Year is against Dorset Rivals Weymouth – who also drew to-day, as the other Dorset side in the Southern Premier equalised in the 93rd minute.

“There’s going to be a really good atmosphere at the game, and that’s what players want to play, matches where there’s a lot of supporters, that’s what they prefer. For that reason alone, it becomes a big match for us to play in.”

Today we welcome Kings Lynn to the Tatnam for another crucial match in our quest for promotion. We are

looking for revenge after losing at Kings Lynn earlier in the season. I was really impressed with Kings Lynn that day and I’ve no doubt it will be another tough match for us.

The postponement of the match against Weymouth on the 2nd of Jan was so frustrating and those feelings were compounded by our match at Stratford also falling victim to the weather. We are still in a good position compared to most other teams when it comes to the match-es we have played but it’s still annoying as we have a pretty match fully fit squad and we want to plough on. It also makes life very difficult for the club in terms of losing revenue and subsequent cash flow problems that can cause. The board of this club work tirelessly to keep the club going and fund a strong playing squad and we all owe them a great deal. Having said that you our loyal supporters also do so much simply by turning up in good numbers and paying your admission money and all the other costs that go with being at a game. It really is a big joint effort .

I took the opportunity of watching the Weymouth v Hitchin game last Saturday and was very impressed with Hitchin particularly in terms of the attacking threat they pose. They are putting a really good run of results together and we need to be wary of them and make sure we pick up points ourselves starting today. That being said I believe there are many teams that could put a run of results together and cat-apult themselves into the title reckoning. For example Kettering have a great squad

and some very experienced players and I think they will be right up there come the end of the season.

We are nearly at full strength and Richard Gillespie took another step towards gaining match fitness by playing 20 minutes in a reserve fixture. The only absentee we have is Jamie Gleeson. He is due to see a specialist as his injury is still causing some problems and we need to know how best to proceed . Hopefully we will get some good news and Jamie will be back sooner rather than later.

We trained at the beach last Saturday and after a really hard running session we ended with a game of touch rugby. It proved to be very entertaining to watch and attracted a number of somewhat bemused passers by. The highlight was probably Lewis Lindsay running clear for what he thought was going to be a glorious try only for him to be somewhat unceremoniously stopped in his tracks by a big incoming wave! I thinks it’s important to make training varied and interesting and last Saturday was certainly that.

Enjoy the game

Happy new year to all at Poole Town, and to our visitors today from King’s

Lynn. Most of us begin the year with

high hopes. In football terms, at PTFC we hope that a healthy lead in the league will bear fruit in a championship and promo-tion, and all at the club will be working hard to make that a reality. In life outside football, people have hopes too numer-ous to list here – the popularity of gyms in January bears wit-ness to that, although not every-one is willing to put in the hard work they need to make hope become reality!

All of us are hoping for a new start in some way or oth-er. As a Christian, my hopes for the new year are built on the foundations of things God has already done. Recently, at Christmas, we celebrated the fact that God showed himself as a person in Jesus, not in a palace or a hospital but amid the mess and smell of a sta-ble. So whatever mess might characterise our situation, God is with us as we hope for better times ahead.

You may be wondering why a football club would link up with a chaplain. Many clubs do, from non-league to Premier League. Football clubs are gatherings of people, from spectators to players, who experience the ups and downs of life, and my previous experience as a chap-lain is that people sometimes want to talk or pray about things as they arise. I am available for anyone who would like to get in touch. You can reach me on 01202-740235 or email [email protected], or see me at Tatnam.

A few words about me... My ‘day job’ is Vicar of St John’s Church on Ashley Road, where you will always be welcome. I am married to Becky, and we have two grown-up children. My woolly hats are red and white, but I confess that’s be-cause I am a life-long Arsenal supporter.

Happy New Year!

Rev David Price

MATCH SPONSORS COMMERCIAL MATTERS

Our last two scheduled home games fell foul of the weather, as well as last Saturday’s trip to Stratford. Our last home game, almost a month ago, was a disappointing 3-3 draw with Slough. On Boxingday we were held 0-0 at Frome. However, we still remain 6 points clear of Chippenham and 14 points clear of 9th placed Kings Lynn who we play today. Come on you Dolphins, let’s get the win and put some more points between us and the chasing pack.

I would like to thank The Funky Peach for Sponsoring the Slough Match and The Daniels/Wigmore Family who sponsored the Ball. Between them, they chose Jack Dickson as their Man of the Match, pictured here with Pippa Daniels.

For today’s game, The Funky Peach are once again Match Sponsor and the Ball has been sponsored by Tony Newman Estate Agents. Let’s hope you all have a great after-noon and hopefully the right result.

We are now sold out for Match and Ball Sponsors for the remainder of this season and I would like to thank all those compa-nies and individuals that have supported us over this season. We do have a couple of members of the playing squad still available for sponsorship (£85) and a couple of Mascot (£40) places still available. Please check the website for availability and get in contact.

If you have never tried Tatnam Trebble, I promise you it will be the most tasty Cheddar you have ever had. Seek our Martin Smith on the Cheese table at home games. Try one of his Pork pies as well, you will not be disap-pointed.

The club turned 125 years old on 20th Sept and to mark the occasion we are looking to form a new Vice-Presidents Board. Cost is £5,000 and in return you will receive free entry to Tatnam for 3 years, with boardroom hospitality, for two people plus seats at the Sportsmans Dinner and End of Season Presentation Dinner, as well as the chance to

shape the future of the club. Interested par-ties are to contact any member of the board.

I would like to thank all of you who are using http://poole-town-foot-ballclub.easy-search.org.uk/ as your search engine. We earn ½p per search and that amounts to a cou-ple of pounds per week. That combined with http://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/causes/pooletown-footballclub/ we have now raised over £1,000 for the club. Thanks to all those that support these initiatives.

We are planning another Legends Night (Hall of Fame). This is taking place on 19th February. Speak to Dick behind the bar or see the advert in this programme for further details.

Happy New Year to you and your loved ones, let’s hope this is the year.
