Afternoon AllSo today is massive game

for us in which we need to bounce straight back from Tuesday’s disappointing result against Chippenham. Last season for a large part of it we did well bouncing back after a bad result and that’s exactly what we need today.

Tuesday was unlike us, we gave away two penalties, harsh or not that’s something we don’t do, we’re very strong defensively and a lot of teams don’t get given many chances against us so to give a team two huge opportunities in a game like that is a hard pill to swallow. In any game to come back from two goals down is a massive task. We did have chances but unfortunately didn’t take them, we’re confi-dent in our attacking players though and know on most other days they’ll hit the back of the net.

Anyway we are four games in, we don’t have time to let our heads drop, we pick

ourselves up and go again today, we need to make Tatnam a hard place to come for other teams, we need it to be as loud as possi-ble and intimidating, you guys are brilliant in full voice so please be our 12th man and kick the lads on, it’s a massive help to us, roar us to a big three points.

BOARDROOM NOTESChris ReevesVice Chairman

Where on earth did that result Tuesday night come from?? Those of us that witnessed the sparkling football that put St. Neots to the sword on Saturday last just couldn’t wait to see the team in action again and the pleasant evening, the perfect Tatnam pitch and a healthy crowd of 473 eagerly await-ing another 90 minutes of entertainment appeared to be setting things up for another three points and who knows depending on results elsewhere a return to the top of the table. How wrong were we! Chippenham in fairness were well worth their win on the night. They benefited from some strange (and vital) refereeing decisions but they rode their luck and at times controlled the play in a way that not many teams get to do here.

A bitter lesson must be learnt from this game. This is a strong league with many Clubs well able to perform very capably. We have no divine right to victory. We remain a huge scalp to all we play as a result of our success in recent years and we must play to our absolute highest potential each and every time we take the field if our ambitions are to be realised. We have the players with the ability, the drive and the motivation to do that. We certainly have a management team committed to that aim.

One of the beauties about this stage of the season is that the games come thick and fast and we have an early opportunity to put things right and knowing just how much the defeat on Tuesday hurt the players, they will be so determined to put things right this afternoon. It won’t be easy of course as we face a strong challenge from a talented Merthyr side who have earnt their lace in the Premier League following their South and West Championship win last season. They have started this campaign in fine form and clearly are not struggling to cope with life at the higher level. Their players officials and supporters are most welcome to Tatnam.

Another welcome I should extend today is to the latest new arrival within the extended

Poole Town family in the shape of the new born baby daughter of Carl and Rosie Pettefer.Born on the morning of the Chippenham game and explaining Carl’s absence from the side that night. Hopefully Carl will be back today buoyant by the arrival of his beautiful daughter and de-termined to help his team mates banish the memory of their defeat on a day which for Carl and Rosie will be one of the best in their lives. Our congratuations go out to them both.

On a very sad note we lost one of our ex players last Sunday with the death of Derek Stroud at the age of 85. Derek finally lost his battle with cancer but will be warmly remembered by all who knew him. He played with distinction for a clutch of local Clubs including AFC Bournemouth and was also a fine golfer but more importantly a great guy. His son Ian also of course played for the Dolphins in our Stadium days.

On Tuesday of this week ko 7.45 there is another chance to see our talented u21 side-opposition yet to be confirmed at the time these notes are being penned. Always entertaining and a great way to spend a Tuesday evening. No admission charge just a bucket going round to help out with the cost of the officials. Next Saturday our u18s take on Eastleigh in a pre-season friendly ko 10.30.These lads are an exceptionally talented group and well deserving of support and with the first team just down the M3 at Slough-time enough to take in both games!

Next home game here is on Bank Holiday

Monday v Frome ko 3.00pm. Enjoy the game and don’t forget the 50:50

tickets Chris

Two Andy Sandell pen-alties and a late Matt Smith goal condemned

10-man Poole Town to a first league defeat of the season.

Sandell’s two penalties was followed by a Steve Devlin penalty, which was just a con-solation goal for the Dolphins.

Poole’s first chance came in the second minute when Michael Walker nearly flicked home Devlin’s second-minute corner.

And Devlin was involved two minutes later when his cross-field pass found Luke Holmes, but the winger’s cross was un-able to find a Dolphins player.

James Guthrie’s cross found Sandell but his header wind, in what was one of Chippen-

ham’s few chances in the first half.

After 14 minutes, Marvin Brooks found Luke Burbidge who drilled the ball across the box. Chippenham goalkeep-er Kent Kauppinen held onto the ball, with Richard Gillespie lurking.

Brooks was involved 14 min-utes later when his shot went over after Burbidge pulled the ball back to him.

And 10 minutes later, Sand-ell scored Chippenham’s first penalty of the match after referee Christopher Wade deemed that new signing Jai-me Gleeson had committed a foul in the box.

It was the only goal of the first half in a half of few

Luke Holmes’ ran through the Chippenham defence at the start of the second half before Brooks shot wide after good build-up play.

Ashan Holgate slipped up when played in through San-dell in what ended the flurry of chances at the start of the second half.

Holgate then won anoth-er penalty for Chippenham when him and goalkeeper Nick Hutchings collided in the box, resulting in a yellow card for Hutchings. Sandell duly stepped up and converted his second of the game.

The goal seemed to take the wind out of Poole’s sails until the 76th minute, when Gillespie was brought down in the box and Devlin scored the Dolphins’ solitary goal.

It looked as if the second goal had given the Dolphins a boost, when, in the 79th minute, Holmes ran through the Chippenham defence. He ended up on the ground in the box but the ball fell to Connell, but his shot went wide.

And a minute later, Lee Phillips was fouled by Michael Walker who picked up his second yellow (the first com-ing after the second Chippen-ham penalty.

In the 91st minute, Poole’s pressing led to a Chippenham counter-attack which Matt Smith finished off with a su-perb shot.

The Fan’s View

Jack Tanner gives his view on the match:

A rare poor performance against the early pacesetters proved costly. Poole perhaps had more chances,

but ultimately the game was settled from the spot. Failure to convert

our own chances led to Chippen-ham countering well, drawing our defence into committing fouls. On to Saturday, for another bite at the

apple.

Today we welcome Merthyr Town to the Tatnam. They are widely tipped to be strong

contenders for promotion this season and they have started well. We need to respond to what was obviously a bitterly disappointing re-sult last Tuesday. Performance wise it wasn’t a disaster as particularly in the first half we had some good periods of pressure and created chances. It was missing those first half chances that undoubtedly cost us as I’m sure if we had gone in front we would have won the game. The penalty decisions were somewhat contentious, particularly the second one, but we must not allow that to be an excuse for the result and de-flect away from our own shortcom-ings on the night. I feel I know this group of players very well and I am confident you will see the correct type of response tonight.

I must say I felt the atmosphere around the game for our two previous home games has been somewhat subdued. I think having a strong support at home games is so important and whilst we are extremely lucky to have such loyal supporters if everyone can be as vocal as possible today and on-wards it will really help.

On the personnel front I would like to congratulate Carl Petterfer and his partner Rosie on the birth of

their first child on Tuesday morning. Carl was not able to make Tuesday’s game but should be back today. Lewis Lindsay also missed out on Tuesday due to a bruised foot but should be okay today. Sadly, we lose Luke Burbidge for the next three games starting today as he has gone on holiday with his family. We will miss him but I know we have a strong enough squad to cope.

Let’s look forward to a really good match today and a return to winning ways.

Page 41: Poole Town V Merthyr Town

Well Tuesday night didn’t quite go ac-cording to plan, but that’s football and we do have bouncebackability. Today is the time to prove it. Come on you Dolphins, we believe!

I would like to thank Rockley Park for Sponsoring the Chippenham Match and Clare Allen for sponsoring the Ball in memory of her late father and Tatnam regular Mike Allen. Also, a big thank you goes to Jack Jones for being our Mascot on Tuesday night, who asked to have his photo taken with Goal Keeper Coach Robbie Yates.

For today’s game, Portman Stone return to Tatnam and have Sponsored the Match and the Ball has been sponsored by Peter and Olive Reeves who in return will have reserved/named seats in the Stand. This is a new initiative following a request from some other supporters, who asked if they could reserve a seat in stand and were willing to pay for the privilege. If this is something that would interest you, then please get in touch. Todays Mascot is 8 year old Bryn Vaughan, son of our own Welsh Dolphin, Perry. We hope you all enjoy the afternoon and hopefully see a Poole Town win.

If you or your company would like to sponsor a Match, Ball, Player, or know someone who would like to be a Mascot please get in contact. We have plenty of availability. At the time of writing, Hutch, JD, Marvin and Luke Roberts are all look-ing for Sponsors and we are looking for a Match Sponsor and Mascot for the game against Frome on Saturday 31st August, plus Ball Sponsors and a Mascot for the Dorchester game on the 22nd Septem-ber.

We expect at the moment, subject to shipping, to be able to launch the new

fans shirt (second strip) at the Frome game on Bank Holiday Monday. As it’s a home game, we will not be wearing it, but you will be able to collect your pre-orders at the game. Replicas of both the new first strip and the fans shirt can be or-dered at the Clubshop today and orders can be placed online shortly. There are all kinds of other bargains to be had in the Clubshop, so give Rob’s Pod a visit before you leave today.

The annual golf day on Friday 25th Sep-tember 2015 when we will be returning to Canford Magna once again. We are almost at our full quota of teams, so if you are interested, contact [email protected] for further information. The annual Sportsmans Dinner will be on Thursday November 12th with details to follow.
