PRICE BARRACKS, Ladyville,Wednesday, April 27, 2016: Belize’s greatest ally of the 21st

Century is undoubtedly theGovernment and people of theRepublic of China-Taiwan. This greatfriend has come true for Belize onceagain and the timing could not bebetter. Since the British Governmentpulled out its helicopters being usedby the British Army Training andSupport Unit in Belize (BATSUB) in2012, the Government of Belize hadbeen calling on allies to provide airsupport for its troops. Requests wentout to the Governments of the UnitedStates, Taiwan, Canada and othersbut it appeared that those requestwere falling on deaf ears andGovernment was forced to beginscouting for affordable helicopters to

purchase. The helicopters weregoing to be paid for with the use ofPetrocaribe funds and would costanywhere between $4 million for usedto US$8 million for new ones. Thiswould mean less money forinfrastructure development, sportingfacilities, social programs and debtcontrol. However, the need forhelicopters made the sacrifice worthit. Brigadier General Jones,Commandant of the BelizeDefense Force, believes, “The onlyway to secure our borders is tohave a presence on the ground.”Transporting soldiers to strategiclocations along the border has beendifficult since the withdrawal ofBATSUB. A trek through extremelydangerous terrain takes 12 to 48

hours, depending on the destination.According to General Jones,“Having the helicopters willallow troops to be deployed in amatter of 45 minutes to twohours.” “Many soldiers have beeninjured on the way to observation

posts. They havefallen, been bittenby poisonous snakesand more.” Fortunatelyfor Belize, theGovernment of theRepublic of China-Taiwan informed theGovernment that theywill be donating twohelicopters from itsfleet to the BelizeDefense Force. Aseventeen-memberassembling team fromthe Taiwan army, ledby Colonel AoCheng-Lin, arrivedin Belize on April 5,2016. This teamincluded engineers,t e c h n i c i a n s ,mechanics and twoarmy pilots. Theycame to assemble thehelicopters and

Contributed: Have you ever paused to wonderwhat Belize would be like withouttrees? Trees produce the oxygen webreathe; they provide a home for manyof the animals that tourists come toBelize to see; and the timber industryprovides jobs and contributes to thecountry’s economy. In short, treesbenefit us in countless ways. While driving through Belize, it cansometimes seem as if there is anendless amount of trees, but unless wetake care of our forests, we could seethe trees disappear. So how can wetake advantage of everything our trees

The Future Of Forests In Belizehave to offer today while making surethat our grandchildren will also beable to benefit from the presence oftrees? One of the ways to achieve this issustainable forestry – selectivelycutting trees to maintain forest cover. While traditional logging takes outevery tree that is large enough to sell, sustainable forestry uses techniquessuch as rotating where trees are cuteach year and only removing acertain number of trees from the land.Several concessionaires in Belizealready practice these methods, andsome communities are adopting these

techniques as well. Another way to ensure that forestsremain standing in Belize is to protecttree species that are threatened, meaning they are in danger of ceasingto exist. Belize is home to severalspecies of trees that are declining innumber, according to the InternationalUnion on the Conservation ofNature (IUCN) Red List, includingmahogany and cedar. For somespecies, such as mahogany androsewood, the reason they have beenoverharvested is due to a highmarket price and international trade. If too many trees of a species are cut

to sell now, the species will not beavailable to sell in the future. In orderto allow the population of thesespecies to recover, the Convention onInternational Trade in EndangeredSpecies (CITES) controls trade byensuring that exported trees of thesespecies are cut using sustainabletechniques. The biggest way that we can makesure trees remain in Belize forgenerations to come is by becomingaware of threats to forests andmaking our voices heard in supportof practices such as sustainableforestry. Let’s make sure our childrenand grandchildren enjoy the benefitsof trees in Belize!

BELIZE CITY, Belize, Thursday,April 28, 2016: The Belize Territorial Volunteersare willing to put every single Belizeanman, woman and child in danger justfor 10 minutes of fame. Rt. Hon.Prime Minister Dean Barrow andBrigadier General David Joneshave urged the leaders of the BTV to“give peace a chance” but theyremain committed on going on anexercise that every objective thinkingindividual deems as an act ofprovocation. They are planning a tripto the Sarstoon Island for thisSaturday, April 30. The Ministry of Foreign Affairsscheduled a meeting with the leadersof BTV for Thursday, April 28, and itis expected that the officials willattempt to reason with them. GeneralJones, Commandant of the BelizeDefense Force, says he is currentlyworking with his Guatemalancounterpart to come up with a modusvivendi and until then he is advisingBelizean NGOs to not add moretension to the area. “Give diplomacya chance to work to ensure thatwe have an established protocolthat both countries will agree tothat will allow civilians andmilitary to operate in the areapeacefully. Just give peace achance,” said Jones to the Belize

Sarstoon Trip Places Belize In Danger

Territorial Volunteers. Wil Maheia, Leader and Founderof BTV, said they will make a finaldecision on the Sarstoon trip after themeeting with the Ministry. GeneralJones will be present at the meeting.About Maheia, Jones says, “We areaware of his passion, we are awareof his patriotism but I believethat reasoning and logic inregards to the issues that havebeen evolving due to the shootingincident he would be able tolisten to us.”  This is not the first time that theauthorities have cautioned the BTV

from making a trip to the disputedarea. However, this time the requestcomes after days of escalated tensionbetween the militaries of Belizeand Guatemala. Prime MinisterBarrow said, “In the currentcircumstances, where we just wentthrough an absolutely harrowingweekend… where our diplomacyand the face to face meetings withGuatemala have produced thisresolve to de-escalate tensionsand to find a way routedin peace and mutual respectforward - in those circumstancesfor these people to maintain that

they will still go to the Sarstoonon Saturday would in my viewbe absolutely and utterlyunacceptable.” “I am appealingto the Territorial Volunteers togive peace a chance.” Up to news time no word has comeout from the meeting. The entirenation is watching closely. It is a verypolarizing issue. There are strongemotions on both side of the argument. Some Belizeans strongly support theBTV’s trip because it would showGuatemala that we are not afraid ofthem and we can go to any part ofour country, including the Sarstoon.Others strongly oppose the tripbecause they believe that BTV shouldgive authorities a chance to establisha protocol for use of the Sarstoondiplomatically.Territorial Volunteers.

Mr. Jones is traveling with his wifeand mother-in-law in a far eastcountry. At a place of honor hismother-in-law makes a carelessremark, which the native people takeas an insult to the royal family. Mr. Jones is dragged off to courtwith his wife and mother-in-law andare sentenced to corporal punishment. Each of them are to receive 50 lasheson the rear end with a cane. Butbecause the royal family doesn't wantto appear hostile to foreigners, theygrant the guests in their country a wishbeforehand, as long as it is able to befulfilled. Mrs. Jones is first. "What do you wish foryourself?" "I would like a pillow bound onmy rear end before the lashings." "Okay, that shall be granted toyou." Mrs. Jones has the pillow boundto her rear end and receives herpunishment. But because the pillowis too small and the executioner alsohits her back a couple of times, shereceives a few blows. Next it is Mr. Jones' mother-

in-law's turn. "What do you wish foryourself?" "I would like a pillow bound onmy rear end and a pillow boundon my back before the lashings." "Okay, that shall be granted toyou." The mother-in-law receives her fiftylashes, but hardly feels the painthrough the pillows. Then comes Mr. Jones himself. "What do you wish for your-self?" "I have two wishes. Do youwant to fulfill them for me?" "Because you are a guest in ourcountry, we want to fulfill yourwishes for you, as long as they arereasonable." "I would like 100 lashes insteadof 50." The executioner is surprised, butrecovers again right away and replies,"Yes, that is a pious wish, it shallbe granted to you. And what isyour second wish?" "I would like to have mymother-in-law bound to myback."

A Fitting Punishment

Useless In The Parking Lot A woman was at work when shereceived a phone call that herdaughter was very sick with a fever. She left her work and stopped by thepharmacy to get some medication forher daughter. When returning to her car she foundthat she had locked herkeys in the car.She was in a hurry to get home to hersick daughter. She didn't know what to do, so shecalled her home and told the babysitter what had happened and that shedid not know what to do. The babysitter told her that her daughter wasgetting worse.
